The two wives both ordered supreme of chicken to be served on the puree of what I cannot remember, with kale and carrots and new potatoes. What actually arrived was a small chicken breast drizzled in a non-descript liquid served with two boiled potatoes cut in half and four asparagus tips, nothing else. The waitress was challenged on the food in relation to the description on the menu and she said she would speak to the chef, upon returning advised us that the chef was having a drive on asparagus (perhaps because Aldi had a deal on asparagus that week). My cousin and I ordered the Wagyu burger which was okay, but small and arrived with a basket of chips. whilst it tasted okay, it was small and uninspiring, I had expected better having been here before. All four of us ordered a pudding because we were still hungry and that didn't impress either. I do wish that restaurants would stop employing pretentious chefs who believe that serving chips in fake chip baskets is not a thing of the past, it is simply a way of disguising the small portions that you are being served. Something else which I dislike is restaurants where you are rushed along so the table can be reused, despite having two courses this was under an hour, including time taken to decide and order the food. It is supposed to be a night out, not a meal in the staff canteen to be shoved down quickly to be able to go straight back to your desk.

Have used this establishment a lot over the years so thought it would be a safe bet for Easter Sunday. Went on line to review the menu and it had something for everyone. Booked a table for an invalid followed up with a call and looked forward to a stress free Easter. When arrived the menu was completely different to what was on line. No starters appealed to us. My daughter did not have a main as when we asked if the chef could do something different they would not accomedate her. When the main arrived all meals were cold. Did not even bother with dessert. No wonder restaurant was not busy. Wished I had looked at the reviews before booking. Very disappointed. No value for money. The gravy was like water!!

Booked a table for 6pm on Sunday as it was the earliest we could make it due to work commitments. The app accepted the booking. A while later, I received a call from a polite and pleasant young woman who said the app shouldn’t have accepted our booking because last serving from the kitchen was 6pm. She asked if we could come earlier at 5.30. I explained the problem but offered to pre-order and be there before 6 and earlier if possible. The woman went to check with the kitchen but returned to say no orders could be taken unless we were in the pub so we had to cancel. Basically it sounds like the chef just couldn’t be bothered. I’ve got no issue with the person taking the call as she was well mannered and clearly acting under orders. Strange way to run a business though and we won’t bother booking the Old Friar again in future.

Lost its touch... The first time we went here a year ago for a roast dinner it was outstanding. The second time, this weekend, I was very disappointed. I had the two meat roast and the beef was overcooked and rubbery. The potatoes were hard and inedible. The pork was chewy and did not taste nice. The gravy was like water. They were very busy and we felt rushed to leave our table. I left hungry and at a cost. Staff were busy and it was difficult to grab their attention when I first began to eat. After a while I was so hungry I ate it but it was not worth the £18 price tag. The quality has definitely deteriorated.

Not been to this pub for a while but I was so glad we chose to return for a Sunday roast. I opted for the roast beef, which came with roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, Yorkshire pudding and plenty of roasted veg and boiled green veg. The whole plate was absolutely delicious, the beef was melt in the mouth, I couldn’t fault it. I highly recommend and will definitely return for another roast.

I run a Sunday lunch Club for some retired people and arranged for us to hold our Christmas meal here. Unfortunately, during our meal an incident occurred which, the pub/restaurant refused to deal with at the time and has avoided multiple attempts, by me, to sort out subsequently. To give the background, I contacted The Old Friar in good time for Christmas and discussed our needs with the owner/landlord. During that discussion I explained that some of our members had smaller appetites and would prefer to have a child’s portion. The owner/landlord said that this wouldn’t be a problem, so I made the booking for Sunday, 18th December. When he sent through the menu, there was a child’s portion shown. As we were a large group, he asked that we pre-order. I organised this and sent the pre-orders to the pub/restaurant 4 days before the meal. This clearly showed that some members had ordered Child’s portions. I rang the Old Friar a couple of times on the Friday and Saturday to clear up some last-minute details and confirmed with them that the pre-orders had been received. At no point did anyone there indicate that there was any problem with the pre-orders. However, when the main courses arrived, it was clear that those who had ordered Child’s portions were being served full adult meals. When this was raised, we were told by the serving staff that there were “no small plates” and “those who had ordered Child’s portions would only be charged for these”. We accepted this is good faith, but, when it came time to pay, those who had ordered child’s portions were told that they had to pay full price. I raised this with the senior waitress and asked to speak to the landlord/owner, only to be told that he was “unavailable”, and she had no authority to make any changes. Rather than make a fuss and ruin the experience for everyone else, those who had ordered the Child’s portions reluctantly paid the full price. I told the woman that I would be contacting the Landlord/Owner concerning the issue. I emailed him the following day and have, to date, NOT had any reply. I have also rung The Old Friar on numerous occasions, only to be told that they were busy and would ring me back later. They have NOT done so. Up until this issue arising, we had had a really great time and I had received several requests from members to re-visit The Old Friar sometime during 2023. Unfortunately, this incident has left a very bad taste in everyone’s mouths. Everyone, including those who were not affected, feel we were conned, and the decision of our Group is that we will NOT be visiting this venue again. Quite frankly, I would have had more respect for the management of this establishment if they had, at least, engaged with me, even if the outcome was not what I would have liked. Ignoring me has just added insult to injury.

Please don’t bother!! On arriving we were told the head chef had walked out. Main meal took 1.45 mins to arrive. Unfortunately in our party meals were brought out at different times resulting some had finished whilst other members of our party were still waiting. The food itself was awful. The turkey Christmas dinner consisted of very burnt carrots and parsnips, half a sausage, undercook stuffing. No peas, Yorkers or pigs in blankets. Very poorly cooked and portion size. Desserts consisted of a frozen cheesecake with solid frozen fruit. After 2 requests a Christmas pudding consisting of 3 spoonfuls finally was served 15 minutes when everyone had finished eating. Requested drinks and condiments that never arrived. I have frequented this establishment over 20 years and always had an excellent meal. However after today I will sadly take my custom elsewhere my colleagues unfortunately also felt the same.

We pre-booked our table, which I would certainly advise as the pub was very busy. We chose a prawn cocktail and chicken liver pâté as a starter. Mains, we both selected the pork. We followed this with two citrus possets. The food we had was well presented, mains hot and all very tasty. In fact our roast pork dinners were for us, just to big! Next time we go we will drop the starters! Really good service and friendly team. Our bill including one soft drink and a large glass of wine was £70. Highly recommend this venue and we will certainly be re-visiting.

Unfortunately our visit here seemed like, what I hope was a rare, bad one. We have a number of friends who return here time and time again. But unfortunately we couldn’t fathom why, when what we experienced was very slow service and average food. We waited an hour for a Sunday roast, which came out with one meal missing roast potatoes, which is a pretty staple ingredient in a roast dinner, they quickly rectified this, which we appreciate and whilst the dinner was presented beautifully and we were really excited to tuck in, unfortunately that excitement was short lived because we felt it lacked flavour. I’m very sorry to leave this feedback because the staff were very kind, but I hope it’s considered constructively as I wish them well.

Its about 2 years since we dined here, and while the food was ok last time, it wasnt great enough to warrant returning. After what we believe are 'new owners', we tried it again, as we are currently on a quest to find decent eateries in the area we have recently settled. The food was superb, with no other description for it. Better than the actual menu description, if i'm honest. After using their online booking system, we arrived to find the premises clean, bright and airy, the staff pleasant and helpful, and the wine very drinkable. We had a chicken milanese , and a lamb rump mains. We were told there would be a 25 min 'wait' for the latter to be cooked. The meals arrived when we were expecting them, on full plates, but not over-facing. We also had deserts - again excellent. The final bill was also pretty good for what we had eaten (and drunk), which was also under a tenner more than our last 'local pub' meal barely a week earlier - which was average to poor. We paid what i would call 'full price', having just missed a 2 for £20 deal the night before, but we weren't bothered. We are definitely new fans of the Old Friar, and will return soon.

The turkey was stone cold so I complained...when I could eventually get someone’s attention. When the plate returned I was told that the meat had been replaced but it was still covered in the gravy I’d added prior to it being taken away...not fooled! It obviously just got zapped in the microwave and became even drier than before. Had I not read that the meal came with bread sauce I wouldn’t have know that was what it was. I could only describe it as watery milk, I don’t think it had ever been introduced to a clove? A very poor meal, not deserving of the price tag.

Visited here a couple of weeks ago and opted for the roast beef sandwich which was excellent, we didn't mind paying the £7.50 price tag. Enjoyed it so much we returned today and what a disappointment! Previously the bread was proper granary bread and the beef was obviously carved off the joint, just what you would expect for the £7.50 price. What a difference today! Cheap brown bread, and the beef was clearly cheap 'processed' sliced beef that you would buy in any supermarket. This was a real disappointment, and most definitely NOT worth £7.50!

The chef apparently was from a higher end dining restaurant in woburn and the menu reflected that. The quality was very good, fresh tasting and with decent portions. We enjoyed and went back Saturday lunch. Pub classics was back for lunch and again great quality. I could have eaten anyone of those starters and was close ordering 3 instead of a main meal.

Convenient stop on way down A14. We have called several times. Last visit disappointing and we learnt it had changed hands 2/3 months past. The prices had increased for the standard lunch which will probably deter regulars. Fish and chips had a disappointing variety of fish. Possibly marshy Basa certainly not Cod or Haddock or Pollack.

Not only does this pub hold a lot of sweet memories for me, it really knows how to do good pub grub. Came about a week ago and had a cod goujon sandwich, that comes with fruit crisps and coleslaw and I had a side of Cheesy chips. For dessert I had Eton Mess which was scrumptious. The service wasn’t the quickest, the main took a while to arrive but staff were friendly and polite. Look forward to coming again :)

Booked a table on Sunday at 230 and were shown to our table we were then left for about 20 minutes then a waitress showed 2 more people to the table next to us and asked them straight away what they would like and then looked at us and came over to take our order then the people who came in 20 mins after us went up to carvery so we then decided to leave if we were asked what we wanted we'd have been up and served before these other people even came in when we cancelled our order they said it was because we had to wait for gluten free Yorkshire this is not the reason we left it was because we were just forgotten about not really great service we will still come there as food and service is usually good and we've been going there for years but owner just needs to know that customers should not be shown to seat then forgotten about

Visited recently and had the worst carvery ever, the carrots and parsnips were so burnt that it was difficult to tell which was which. The meat was tough and gristly and the cauliflower cheese had a very strange taste. Don't think we will be visiting again.

The owners of this place have thought hard about their market. It is not just a busy and charming pub but also an excellent restaurant with an equally considered menu. At weekend predominately it has a full menu plus a carvery, where one can fill ones plate with beef pork or chicken or almond three beautifully roasted with noodles of roast potatoes vegetables etc to match. The al a carte menu is creative and delicious too. It changes it seems quite often and is always of excellent quality. Staff are very friendly polite and provide attentive service. I have eaten here many times when visiting my parents and would advise anyone who wants great food in a good atmosphere without needing a mortgage to visit and see for themselves.

Ten of us went for lunch today (a Saturday) and found the food quite poor. The menu is haphazard and all over the place to look at. The service was not good at all, one lady was quite rude. There were no changing facilities to change my baby, I had to change him on a mat on the sink in the ladies where he kept falling into the sink. No disabled toilets also consequently.

Visited on the spur of the moment as our usual eatery was packed to the rafters. Saturday afternoon the place was very quiet. Ordered fairly swiftly from the menu- Chicken Caesar salad and beer battered fish, chips and mushy peas. Both meals were excellent and well presented. However I must dock a star as I feel the prices were a little high for what we had. None the less we will return in the future.

Came to this delightful village pub restaurant for a Sunday roast, gorgeous food with a lovely vegetarian option offered with a vegetarian gravy (without even having to ask for it!), hubby thoroughly enjoyed the beef too. Friendly staff and beautiful deserts. Great value at £15.95 for two courses or £18.95 for 3. Lovely beer garden too with rural surroundings. Highly recommend!

They allow dogs in the bar area for dining which is one small table or a sofa. Not clever, since this is right in the way of everyone coming in. Our dog just laid on the floor quietly no trouble at all.

After a visit to the old friar today i was so disappointed for the first time ever. We was greeted by a member of staff who was dressed quite inappropriately in my opinion, wearing a very revealing dress, I actually didn’t know where to look and my first thought was how glad I was not to have my teenage son with me.

We turned up with a big dog. We sat down inside and ordered drinks and food - no-one complained about the presence of our dog, who is hard not to notice as he weighs 80 kilos, though he's also very well behaved. After we'd been there quite a while, the manager materialized and told us we'd have to sit on the tables outside. The weather outside wasn't great, so this effectively meant we had to leave.

This has been my favourite place to eat for 10 years so I was so disappointed to visit and find it totally changed. Nobody there (unheard of - always packed before whatever the night), no carvery (only Sunday now), very ordinary food which was overpriced. No coffee. We won’t visit again sadly. I wonder where the previous owner and chef have gone? The website was down when I tried to check the monthly menu so I wondered if something had happened.

We have visited The Old Friar many times, but the latest trip was a big disappointment. Last time we stopped there, they were between managers but this time the new management and chef were in place. We visited for lunch and order ham, egg and chips, lasagne and mushroom and spinach risotto. The ham, egg and chips was nicely done but the other two dishes were not as tasty. The lasagne consisted of a few pieces of chewy mince under an excessive amount of cheese sauce and the risotto was served so lukewarm that the spinach leaves were still cold and crispy. Each of these dishes cost £10.50 which was very poor value for money.

Immediately greeted upon arrival and made to feel welcome to bring our two dogs into the bar area. 2pm on a Saturday afternoon and plenty of room in this nice pub so a good time to arrive for food as the kitchen was open all day. Very friendly staff in the process of handing over to new management, so the menu might change in the near future. The beef and horseradish sandwich was superbly tender and served with vegetable crisps and homemade coleslaw. We also had whitebait and a bowl of cheesy chips which were all cooked to perfection. It was nice to see a lot of effort going in to these simple menu items, and all at a very reasonable price.

Popped in after a walk round the hills and Dale's on a Sunday morning, friendly staff, we asked if they had any bar snacks available and were told no. We hadn't booked but only wanted to sit in the garden anyway, still no. We had a drink and sat in the EMPTY garden, first time the garden has been empty of people on a Sunday lunchtime!! Had a table booked for carvery, got told when we got there that there is a 5 min delay as other customers just finishing there coffee, so we got a drink & sat down. 10 minutes later a staff member came & said the other customers were waiting for desserts! & it would be a wait. After asking if there was any other tables in the pub we could use (which there wasn’t) she said I’ll leave it up to you (if we stay or go). As we had it be somewhere at 4 we left, which they weren’t bothered about. Seems very very overbooked which then reflects on the customer service.

The food was well cooked and well presented as well as served with a smile. I myself was amazed that I have now found one more restaurant that the chef actually knows how to cook Duck breast. All in all a great evening.

I was taken here for afternoon tea by my friend. The whole event was great from start to finish. Excellent selection including sandwiches, mini quiche, crisps, cakes, lemon posset, meringues and scones with cream and jam - all decorated beautifully with edible flowers and pea shoots. I have since been lucky enough to experience afternoon tea at Bettys in York and The Dorchester …..The Boxwood Tea far outshone both of these. Would highly recommend.

We stayed here on two occasions, in our campervan to the rear of inn. Quiet and good location. We enjoyed a nights sleep during both our stays. The staff at the inn are fabulous, welcoming and friendly and the owners are really doing a great job. The food was delicious and the ambiance of the inn was just what you’d hope for, log fire burning in the hearth, dog friendly and lots of positive chatter. I’d recommend this as a stopover and eatery.

Turned up tonight a party off 6, to celebrate my daughter’s 18th birthday, her first cocktail! To then be told very abruptly that because we had a small baby asleep in a car seat we couldn’t stay, as after 6 , no children , she was so rude about it and said it’s plastered all over our web Page if you look! , which I have looked and can’t see. If so ok, but she shouted it out and was awful, made us feel really uncomfortable, won’t be returning.
