The Old Fox Theatre Birmingham in Birmingham

Arrived in Birmingham with an hour to spare before going into the Glee Club and both me and my sister were hungry so we called in here. Very busy pub but ran like clockwork in there staff attentive and helpful, food and drinks order taken quickly and lots of choice drinks wise. Food didn’t take long to arrive and it was really good - no complaints whatsoever. Did the job! Would definitely return again if I am in the area and would recommend.

Never Again. I very recently took my two daughters to see a show at Birmingham Hippodrome which is a short stone throw away, After booking a table at this venue . Firstly it was all pleasant and nice,, we sat and looked at the menu, which seemed a bit pricey, but we thought maybe its a bit special, so we went on ahead and ordered, The feeling of pleasure was short lived' As 1, I had to go the bar which was seemingly busy, staff were rushed, and this showed in their attitudes, especially one of them whom I assumed, [as he was the only one smartly dressed]' was the owner/manager, who was quite aggressive in nature and not very friendly, almost like an Italian mobster, maybe he was Italian, I don't know. 2, The pizza one of my daughters had was terrible ,as she lifted it of the plate the topping slid of the base just missing her lovely dress that she wore. I said just leave it on the floor they will clean it later. A pricey small pizza that fell apart. We carried on and tried to enjoy ourselves. 3 not 3 minutes later my daughter kept saying mom, mommy, I said what sweetheart , you need the bathroom, she said no, with a suspicious look in her eyes. nothing she said. so we carried on, a minute later again, mom, stop!, I said what darling,, she said you keep tapping my foot, I'm not I said, I glanced at my other daughter, She says its not me, Then I take a look under the table and to my disbelief, there is a mouse the length of my ring finger chomping away at the topping my daughter dropped, and another one dragging away some bread or something that I can only assume was dropped by another customer prior to our seating. Enough was enough and we left our food and drinks and went next door to a Wetherspoons which saved the night, I felt that disappointed and angry I didn't even ask for a refund, We just wanted to get the hell out of there. I told them in Wetherspoons about our disappointing time at the Sly Fox next door, and they could not do enough for us. One staff member said you are not the first people to come in here and tell us something like that, I hope you got a refund he said, I just said lets not go there. The food although cheap and cheerful, , We were all happy with, We were fed and watered, And the place on a whole had a good vibe, and I can say for certain we had no party crashers. On the surface This Fox place looks and feels pleasant at first, but soon as the staff or one of only 4 foot 6 in particular opens his mouth, Or you try to eat an expensive pizza, and then realize you have extra guests under the table that wasn't invited, Well! , Need I say more, Wetherspoons all the way for us from now on.

Love this place! In particular want to say a big thank to KAREN who looked after us so well. Kind, courteous and professional. Will come again!

Popped in for a spot of lunch before visiting the theatre which was conveniently situated across the road. We ordered wraps and chips. The food was delicious and the chips freshly cooked. The bar had a great range of drinks and the staff were very pleasant. Very enjoyable and would definitely recommend

Great pub with some lovely food, we stopped off to have a drink and a snack before visiting the back to backs across the road, the prices were reasonable for the area and the chips are lovely.

The Sly Old Fox is a lovely place to stop off and have a drink. We popped in just before our tour at Birmingham Back to Backs, which is located just over the street. The décor is quirky, the place is clean and the food is good.

Steak and ale pie pastry, was extremely hard and difficult to cut. Pizza should have been served with garlic bread which never appeared. No one checked that the food was okay, disappointing visit.

Overpriced, low quality food. Never again would I eat here. £2 for a slice of cheese on a burger. £2.50 for one scoop of ice cream served in a ramekin bowl. Would not recommend.

Four friends decided to meet here for lunch, having not been here for a couple of years. The pub had been refurbished and was very pleasant inside and was lovely and comfortable. We were looked after by a wonderful barmaid called Karen who was incredible. The food was delicious and we all thought it was excellent for pub food, plus very good value. Having found this excellent pub we will all be returning as soon as we can. It’s also a great place to have a meal before visiting a show at the Hippodrome.

DID NOT FEEL DAFE IN THIS PUB. Came here for drinks and food before the show opened at the nearby Hippodrome. A group of very loud drunken females came in and stayed for quite some tome. Customers were very unsettled, some walked out leaving food. Many people were coming in but quickly turned around and went out. I think the bar staff should be more trained to handle this type of situation. They should be informed of when and how to call the police or security. I will not be returning again.

Clearly a pub that thrives on the nearby theatre for trade. Food menu limited but what we had was all good. The thing that let it down was the service took a while to be seated despite reservation no one seemed to know which table we were on. Had to fetch our own menus from the bar and no offer of sauces. The tables all felt a little crowded and one meal was forgotten on food service with a few minutes wait for it to arrive after all the others. Not bad but not great given how much other choice there is locally

Mixed Review Evening Meal before a show was brilliant. Went back for Breakfast as menu mentions Gluton Free. Wife asked lady at the bar to check what was GF and she came back and said nothing on the breakfast was GF. In our experience bacon, baked beans, mushrooms and Eggs do not contain wheat. So be warned if you have a food intolerance they staff might not be fully trained to understand food allergens.

Traditional pub with a good range of beers in the heart of Birmingham and ideal for a pre or post theatre drink, or when sampling one of the Arcadian restaurants - although the in house pies did look good!

Booked for 9 of us prior to theatre visit having seen decent reviews. Shambles. Arrived ontime but even though our booking was clearly in the diary, when they got on the right page, no reservation had been made. This is 1.30 on a Sat afternoon, thank god for Wetherspoons! Don't deserve the trade, would have actually asked people to leave if we hadn't walked out.

Chose this venue for a return visit, and again it was first class , we all had various burgers and drinks. Food , staff and atmosphere were great . Would definitely recommend, even if just in Birmingham for shopping

Great pub lovely atmosphere popped in on the off chance for food pre theatre and was able to get a table. Really quick Service girls on bar and food lovely and excellent chunky fluffy chips!

We decided to visit Birmingham on a whim , we were met with Liza and Shelby who immediately made us welcome . What a fantastic pub . Dog friendly in the centre of Brum all that is needed is some treats and water . Thankyou for making our trip so memorable xxxx

The drinks, although on the slightly expensive side, were good, but I'm afraid the food wasn't up to much, and wouldn't recommend this place.

We went to go see sister act at the hippodrome. The place we wanted to go to wasn't open. I rang up after trying several places to be told they didn't have a table but would take my name and number if something came up. They said we where welcome to come down and wait. Half way from grand Central a lovely lady called me to say there was a table. We got there and ordered. A great menu on offer including specials. We had 2 pizzas, 1 steak baguettes and a cajun salad. Food came within half an hour, and was piping hot. It was so delicious and my mum said it was the best pizza she had had in a long time. We would highly recommend this as a pre theatre restaurant and for drinks. A bottle of house rose wine was £18 which was delicious and did 5 glasses of wine. Highly recommended.

We arrived and ordered a sandwiches. It was crowded, but the bar man was coping well and efficiently. We had been sitting for some time when the two ladies next to us told us that they had been waiting over an hour for their meal. We were due in the theatre at 7:30 and so decided to give until 7:05 for the food to arrive. By then it hadn't come and the bar man could give us no idea of how long it would be, so we asked for a refund. In no way this reflected on the bar staff, who were dealing with everything as well as they could, but the wait was unacceptable.

Called into this Sly Old Fox today 20th July 2022 and ordered some food to go with my pint and it was one of the worst meals l have ever had it was terrible. Never never again.

Came for a meal as a group of friends before heading to watch a musical, food was poor for the price your paying and a long wait between food coming out (Pizza came out 10 minutes before the portion of chips to go with it). Staff were friendly though and the drinks were good.

Quick drink here ahead of Glee club. a very 'mixed crowd' and no real atmosphere. Beer choices weren't great, but service was ok.

Used this place a few times pre refurbishment, as super handy to the theatre and was always a theatre pub. But a very tired one, pretty much abandoned by any real theatre trade. Visited again last night, what a change! Fantastic refurb, still a real pub, just much nicer. Was rammed but still great service, really good choice of ales, Doombar, Tribute, Proper Job.The refurb was a Proper Job, now this pub is a great addition to the area, will visit again.

A couple of yards away from the Birmingham Hippodrome the Sly Old Fox is perfect for a pre and post show tipple. We'd popped in the afternoon to see what it was like and noticed a large number of tables were already reserved. So speaking with the barman he advised us as to the best timings to eat and duly saved us a table for later.On returning he recognised us (always good customer service) and pointed us to our table. I had the Fish Finger wrap and my wife the Steak wrap. Both were excellent for before a show and excellent value for money.We returned after the show and the fact several of the orchestra came in added to the ambiance and tradition of the pub!!

Came up to Birmingham for the day to watch a show at the theatre tonight. Had no time for breakfast so by the time we got here me and the wife were weak with hunger. The closest place was Pizza Hut so we got a table and then looked at each other and thought the enjoyment we would take from having lunch here would be zero. Took a five minute walk down towards our hotel and found the pub. The place looked like it would be packed but when we got in there was plenty of spaces. Immediately greeted by the staff and given a menu. Found a really comfy leather booth seat and checked out the menu and the specials board. Lots of good stuff to choose from and after ordering it thankfully came quickly. Not just saying this because I was Hank Marvin but my chicken tower burger was beautiful. Homemade chips and coleslaw and the best burger i’ve Had in god knows how long. Seriously send down the ladies and gentlemen from KFC for some tips as it was beautiful. Same story from what the wife had so we will definitely come here again.All of this to a great musical soundtrack that’s not someone popping on Now 57 on loop. Great prices, great food, cool place that looks and feels like it should be much more expensive.Thank the lord we didn’t stay at Pizza Hut, noisy cafeteria food surrounded by loud fools and annoying children compared to this.Another reason why i’m Glad I married my wife.

On great recommendations, decided to try the Sunday lunch out. Polite, friendly, welcoming staff. Food came out well presented and just what I wanted! Lovely! Will return would highly recommend :)

Este es un pub muy bueno y muy útil para la ciudad de China, cinco de nosotros tuvimos una muy buena noche allí. No probamos ninguna comida ya que obviamente nos dirigíamos a un chino, pero la variedad, la calidad y la relación calidad-precio de las bebidas fue impresionante. Probamos el borrador de Estrella, cervezas reales y varias ginebras, todas excelentes. El servicio es excelente y muy amable también. El Sly Fox estaba muy ocupado cuando otros alrededor del área estaban vacíos, así que eso te dice mucho. Volveremos.

Situated near the theatre and Arcadian, lovely old world pub with well kept real ales (Tribute particularly good), Can get busy on theatre evening but is definitely the best venue near by

Visited on Friday not our first time but still a great night out , didn't eat but good quality beers at reasonable prices.

i was meeting a long standing friend and we decided to meet here, It was vibrant and busy, but not noisy to we could talk and drink with comfort. The range of drinks on offer was impressive and the bar service friendly, helpful and alert. In fact we were going o/n elsewhere to eat but took an interest in the food on a table next to ours. Think we will now come here for food - there was a good variety and people were clearly enjoying it.

Came to Birmingham for the first time and we didn't know where to eat etc. We came across this pub and popped in for a drink. We then saw people's meals and thought we would try some lunch. We were not disappointed. My partner had a burger made with ground beef not a frozen burger. He said it was the best burger he's ever had and we eat out a lot.. I had a steak sandwich and it was amazing. Great prices and the place soon filled up. I would definitely recommend

Vine aquí como suele pasar un rato muy agradable, pero este sábado por la noche la música sonaba tan fuerte que los asientos vibraban. Imo totalmente innecesario, le pedí al personal del bar dos veces que rechazara a tantos amigos y pude disfrutar de nuestras bebidas y charlar. . . . . No hay posibilidad con la (terrible elección de) música a ese nivel. ¡Salga MUY rápido y sugiera si desea disfrutar de la noche, incluso a medio tiempo en el hipódromo opuesto, le da a este lugar un amplio espacio!

Really enjoyed some nice ale and a very good meal before the theatre. Pleasant, friendly staff. Pizzas are £6 on a Monday. Would definitely go again.

Was feeling a bit peckish and saw on their menu 3 for 11 quid.. my partner lives his pork pies and we couldn't go this trip without him having one.. we also ordered 2 sausage rolls... this is a great plate to share or be selfish.. the quality of the pie and rolls was delish along with a palette cleansing salad.. this is where English pubs just rock .. forget cafes when you can get this

Busy pub just across the road from the Hippodrome Theatre, with interesting selction of old theatre posters on the walls and a sign reading 'Order your interval drinks here, and they will be witing on the bar for you' - one way to beat the crush in the the Hippodrome bars during the interval!.

We had a meal late yesterday afternoon. The prices were reasonable and all the food arrived in a timely manner and was cooked properly. The portion sizes were of a good size.

Great location, good selection of reasonably priced drinks etc. friendly staff. Nice to sit outside on a good day.

So, better to get the expected staff response out of the way first, I didn’t ask for any replacement drink nor did I want some. In fact my reply was don’t sell something you shouldn’t just because you think we can’t taste it.

Usually pop in here if seeing a show at the Hippodrome, never had food and not been in since the refurbishment. I had booked a table for 3 pm for a group of 10 friends and family as we were going to see the Straycats at the O2 in the evening. Always a bit concerned when booking for other people but needn't have worried as everybody really enjoyed themselves. We all had the Sunday lunch which everyone agreed was probably as good as it gets. My wife and I had the beef which was perfectly cooked, tender and a really large portion.

Wouldn't normally leave a review on a pub but the Sly Old Fox is worth a visit if you are in the area. There's a good variety of quick bites including 'calamari' which was actually scampi! Staff are friendly and the beer seems well kept.

Highly recommend this place. Nice comfortable surroundings. Friendly staff and good service. Varied menu and good food

The Wetherspoons next door was packed so we came in here. Pleasantly surprised to find a good choice of real ales and very reasonably priced food (considering the ‘theatre land’ location). We both had burgers which were delicious. A pleasant discovery and we will be visiting again

Nuestra primera visita al Sly Old Fox y fue un verdadero placer, el personal era agradable, amable y servicial, y la excelente comida se servía caliente y rápidamente. Esta fue una visita de último minuto que había sido decepcionada por el restaurante de Ken Ho, a pesar de haber reservado una mesa allí solo unos días antes, llegamos para encontrar al restaurante cerrado por un período de 3 semanas sin notificación o disculpa telefónica.

Qué experiencia absolutamente horrible. Esperamos más de una hora y media una parrillada mixta que se parecía a la foto adjunta. Bastante seguro de que la carne había estado cocinando todo el tiempo. ¡Se suponía que era raro! Concedido, había una pinta gratis mientras esperábamos, después de que perseguimos al personal para una actualización después de aproximadamente una hora, pero por el amor de Dios, no es como si hubiéramos hecho algo extraordinario. La única razón por la que puedo ver para regresar es una invitación del gerente para un reembolso y aún así probablemente no nos molestemos. Ni siquiera una disculpa. ¡Horrible!

4 de nosotros decidimos visitar The Old Fox para cenar antes de un espectáculo en el cercano Hipódromo de Birmingham. . . Perfectamente situado, a 2 minutos cruzando la carretera. El pub se ha sometido a una renovación completa y excelente y tiene muchos recuerdos del teatro, tan encantadores para nosotros, teatrales y aficionados al teatro por igual. El menú también es excelente, algo para todos los gustos, tuve el pescado, las hijas, uno tenía Gammon, uno tenía una envoltura de pollo todo incluido. De Guarnición y algunas de las papas fritas más deliciosas que hemos probado, no puedo recordar lo que tenía nuestro yerno, ¡pero hizo una rápida desaparición de su plato! Todo presentado y servido tan bien también. ¡Disfruté de una ginebra 'especial' de su extensa lista de ginebra y en general disfrutamos muchísimo! Un comentario negativo, la música,,,,, no contribuyó al ambiente del lugar, no a la buena música, y demasiado fuerte, todos estuvimos de acuerdo en que tal vez debería mantenerse hasta más tarde en la noche, ya que no pudimos dirigir Conversación sin levantar nuestras voces para ser escuchados. . . la música sutil en el fondo tendría una experiencia mucho más agradable y definitivamente hubiera marcado la quinta casilla también, ¡haciéndolo excelente!

Buena comida, ambiente agradable y precios razonables. Lugar ideal para comer si vas al Hipódromo de enfrente. Tuve una de las especialidades Sweet Chilli Chicken and Prawn kebab con ensalada y papas rizadas, mi hermana la Scampi. Ambos muy bien cocinados y en abundancia.

We love this little pub been there a few times the last few years, had some food this time and I have got to say the prawn & chicken skewers were to die for I would go back just for these ,beer was good to try this place you won't be sorry :)

We were lucky to find a table as it was very busy. Nice atmosphere but oh so slow service at the bar. Prices were reasonable and we would have stopped for a second if we didn’t think we would have to wait 15 minutes at the bar to be served!

I did wonder if this pub had had a recent refurbishment as it struck me as being quite clean and smart on entering.

We always head for a drink here when we visit Birmingham. Lovely atmosphere,very friendly staff. We have always found someone to talk to locals or fellow visitors like us.

Popped into today and found out it has been recently refurbished . Had a couple of beers and an excellent meal . Great service , excellent food and difenetly value for money - I will be back

My first visit to the Sly Fox I visited on a very busy Saturday lunchtime with my son for lunch the food was well cooked and very nicely presented. Even though it was a very busy time we didn't wait to long staff are friendly and efficient and we both enjoyed our lunch and the chips are extremely good.

Never been here before , but will defiantly coming again, & soon. Drinks were served quickly. Food arrived in good time , loverly flavour, freshly battered fish sausage & mash was perfect, the food was hot. Cant fault the place. Thank you.

Have always called into the 'Fox ' begore going to shows at the Hippadrome Birmingham but wont use it again . Staff are disintetested had to hunt for the barmaid and it was very quiet . Then to top it all got ripped off Carling lager £3 very reasonable Hop house 13 by Guinness £5.10 a pint !!!! . Had a couple of others in Brum and this was £2 a pint dearer than anywhere else.

This is the third year running we have booked a meal at the Old Sly Fox. We are a party of fourteen who all want to come back next year to enjoy another excellent meal before going to the pantomime.

Early evening meal on a Saturday . Quite busy as it’s opposite the hippodrome. Reasonable choice and price. I had a pie was quite nice could of done it some gravy. Hubby had fish finger sarny comes toasted. Not bad would go again.

Roast lamb was amazing. The food was served nice and hot. The chef came to say hello which was a nice touch. The young lady's have excellent service and were happy in there jobs. The bar is spotless. Well done all

We came here after “The Nutcracker” at The Hippodrome for drinks and food. Good choice of beers. Tapas menu and also decent pub grub. Excellent service and good food. Would recommend.

A great place for pre dinner drinks as cheap and cheerful. Staff were very busy as it was Saturday evening but they served you quickly. I don’t have food so can’t comment on food.

You pays your money and you takes your chance. I have been in twice since the refurb and had two completely different experience. One pleasant and one where we left early. I think it doesn't quite have the charm that I was hoping for but that aside it is the clientele that creates the atmosphere. On our last visit there were some really strange people in there, perhaps they thought the same about me. The wife felt uncomfortable and so did I but that was due to my particularly hard chair. My ale wasn't great either but that was a random sample of one from a few.

We called in to The Sly Old Fox for a pre-matinee lunch and was not disappointed. The general feeling was of a busy but welcoming pub with good beers on the pumps and an offering of good old fashioned and tasty food.

Called into The Sly Old Fox Theatre Pub on 7 November 18 for a brief visit on way to a function. Very impressed with the recently refurbished pub and went again on 8 December, this time we had a meal, which was scampi and chips,served in a basket on a traditional looking piece of paper how fish and chips used to be wrapped in and lamb steak served with mashed potatoes veg, and mint and rosemary sauce. excellent.

Came in for a coffee before visiting the Back to Backs which are just across the road. Lovely refurb and excellent service. Food menu looked good too; will visit again in the future.

The Old Fox was a small part of Birmingham history and a big part of the richness of my life. There, monthly, I’ve met with a much respected old chum, himself a part of the history of one of the world’s great cities. Though hardly regulars, we’d be greeted warmly by the lovely staff and there indulge in great conversation among theatre goers having a pre-matinee lunch and market traders celebrating or commiserating the end of a working day that had started long before dawn. We’d sip beer beneath theatre posters celebrating decades of ground-breaking performances at the Hippodrome across the road and enjoy the history, vitality and reality of the place. Arguing about the big issues of the day, joshing with other customers and nodding to the silent man in the corner, invariably dressed in stained white overalls and wellington boots, sipping a contemplative pint before heading home.

We used this pub for lunch when our U3A group visited the Back to Back museum opposite. It would also be a perfect place to eat or drink if you are visiting the Hippadrome theatre.

Only popped in for a couple of drinks, but seemed really nice. The staff were friendly, and there was a really nice atmosphere. The pub itself is lovely. Will go again next time we're in the area, and stop a bit longer to try the food.

Just visited the fox following the recent refurbishment and it is lovely. A vast improvement. Good selection of beers too. Very impressed.

Hace años que utilizo este pub, es justo decir que ha necesitado una renovación por un tiempo, así que con curiosidad visitamos el domingo por la tarde como grupo, para ver los resultados, mucho mejor y el día. La pintura resplandeciente se ha ido, agradable y neutral y, afortunadamente, los antiguos recuerdos del teatro han regresado. Delightful pre theatre pub with all the atmosphere you would expect from a traditional British Pub. This is an excellent example of a well managed independent.
