The Charlie Hall in Birmingham

As a regular to this Wetherspoons, I must admit we felt very let down last night with their food and service. A family of 5 ordered food but sadly the 2 steaks that were wanted medium came out over cooked, warm and like leather. We had to hail someone down who kindly offered to replace them. We waited patiently and the replacement steaks finally arrived. They were hot but sadly full of gristle. Let the staff know and was told we can’t do anything about the gristle and that it’s not apparent until the steak is cooked. Well don’t serve it, if it’s full of gristle when cooked !!

So, cannot take away from Wetherspoons what they have done for this sector and I wish them that continuing success, definitely customer orientated. The staff work hard no matter what Wetherspoons you visit. Had many meals over the years here and other Wetherspoons. Definitely below par on food portions and quality. You can get a better meal comparable from a supermarket, they have definitely lost their way on food.

Order my drink did not bring it had to go and get it told me no staff what a load of crap not the first time this has happened to me

I think Whetherspoons are fantastic in bringing an economical place to go to for a drink and making it appealing to people whom would normally avoid pubs. But feel the food is defiantly over priced. The food is as good as what you would make yourself at home. I think what they make so attractive in pint prices they take it away on eating their. Definately below par compared to other chains. A sizzling Steak pub or Greene King, at least you feel you are eating out at the above mentioned. Big fan of Wetherspoons but would rather eat elsewhere. This review is based on my past 3 meals their.

This Wetherspoons is in a less desirable area of Birmingham and is bit of an oasis from the other nearby pubs if you are not locals. The food and drinks are very competitively priced and they have an additional menu which is even cheaper compared to Wetherspoons a couple of miles away. Always been served quick and effectively and never had any problems. Just round the corner from the job centre so convenient and cheap for us unwaged.

Just arrived in Charlie hall Wetherspoons pub and what I’ve noticed with this pub as well as the bottle and sack in Sutton Coldfield that’s so cold in side even when the weather outside is cool as well otherwise it’s a lovely pub nice staff but turn the air conditioning off and keep the doors closed in cooler weather please

What a lovely place outside seating area and little cubicles plus normal seating great arrange of beers wine and spirits including real ale and great food served all day and the staff are very good at their jobs

We ordered fish chips and two curries bar staff got curries mixed up twice there was to much salt in curries so were left poppadoms were uncooked fish was ok the staff need training as the young man was like a bottle of pop with no fizz no go in him at all the dessert was good but again he put it on table we asked what it was he shrugged his shoulders we normally enjoy weatherspoons but not this one very disappointing as this was a metting with a friend who is very ill I did speak to young man but shrugged his shoulders what a wast of money

An impressive building with foregleams of the history of Birmingham. Its always busy and popular because food is good and fairly cheap although the prices have risen recently. The wood that surrounds you and book shelves makes it feel homely. Only issue is they often run out of fish and chips. Seating on tables or cosy booths which are often full. Cups of teas come with the meal. Staff are always polite and lovely.

In the area for work and wanted a quick bite to eat. Very friendly staff. Probably the best I’ve seen in a while. Food cam quick and the place was clean and presentable. I’d recommend

Although visited this pub on many a Saturday, never had a problem with the staff. Pity my mid week visit wasn't the same. 3 young girls behind the bar, and although they seem pleasant enough need a little bit of training in serving customers who were at the bar first, instead of favourites or friends. Maybe distracted by having their boyfriends there?

Food was lovely but carefull get over charged ordered steak meal on a tuesday but charged for gourmet steak meal ( not the £ difference thats the issue but just wanted what ordered )😂no coke to go in apparently free drink ,ordered a can monster amazed to find out on this occasion company policy is u only get some of the can and pressume next customer gets rest ( disgusting ) when complained which rarely do all lady kept saying was its company policy ( surely this cant be right using an open can for another customer 🥺

A lovely old building . Lots of seats ,tables and booths. We had fish and chips. Service was excellent and plates and food was hot. Good taste, plenty of condiments. I enjoyed the meal. There was outside seating and parking close by. This was free after 6.45pm value for money . The meal came with a non alcoholic drink. Which cost approximately £8.50 and £9.55 with an alcoholic drink. Great value for the money. Toilets were many and clean .

Service is fine as is the atmosphere. The pub is newly decorated with cosmetic work in progress, feels very clean and fresh. The staff are always polite and friendly. The problem is with the menu and availability of dishes. Came here a few weeks ago to be told that the kitchen was closed and ended up in Sutton at The Bottle of Sack and had a lovely meal. Went again yesterday to be told there wasn't any steak or fish (this was only around 7pm) and the only crisps available were sweet chilli AGAIN!. The meals we decided on were very nice but I only ordered mine as a last resort because I was hungry! If there is a problem with a supplier then why don't you change supplier? There seems to be an abundance of chicken based meals, burgers and pizza which isn't what I would choose. On a final note the menus are all wipe clean material so why aren't they being cleaned as they are filthy and sticky?

The pub has been refurbished and they have done a good job feels a lot fresher still a good choice of food and drink at value for money prices service from the manger and staff very friendly

We pop into this pub once a month or so and always have a good meal, can never get over what good value for money you get at Whetherspoons.. the food is always promptly served and it tastes good and the staff are always pleasant which is lovely to see. They seem to be on the ball here.

First impression from outside was that you couldn't really tell it was a pub, but then maybe I came in the back way... It's a big place inside with plenty of places to sit and chat or eat. We ordered via the Wetherspoons app and within 5 mins our drinks arrived. Within 10 our meals were here via a friendly waitress. (Bear in mind this was an early Sunday evening so it may be busier on other days) This is a child friendly place so there were some kids playing but it wasn't distracting. The meals were really nice and were wolfed down. Would I come again, yes but I would like to try something else, possibly a dessert also. I would also like to see how the service is when it's busy.

Staff are terrible rude and are incompetent of servicing a drink WOULD NEVER COME HERE AGAIN EVER EVER EVER EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good to be back. My last meal here was well prepared and delivered despite it being late in the evening. Social distancing put in place on the Friday night when I visited and this was enforced by the firm, fair, no nonsense manageress - and handwash dispenser was available at the entrance. I was served swiftly a refreshing, chilled glass of Old Rosie. This rounded off a pleasant evening in this part of Erdington. Well done to the manageress and her team at the Charlie Hall.

I was passing through Erdington, went in for a pint, good locals pub,beer pretty cheap, quite a big place,it used to be a bingo hall, Charlie Hall was a local actor who starred in some Laurel and Hardy films.

First of all it an ok Wetherspoon pub nice food and drinks but what’s let it down is the furnishings it’s old and tatty there a wood panel on the entrance door which as been there for months the seating is hard it’s in desperate needs a all round refurbishment I’ve been to several Wetherspoons in the area

Great staff good old school pub in a working class town, the breakfasts are always great value . Simple food done well and especially great if you can get a booth!

Mi amigo y yo nos reunimos aquí muy a menudo un sábado por la mañana. El desayuno es delicioso y muy buena relación calidad-precio. Los estándares de limpieza son bastante altos, pero a veces el servicio puede ser un poco lento, pero probablemente sea porque hay mucha gente bebiendo a las 10 de la mañana.

Nice interior, friendly staff, food was reasonably priced and filling. I enjoyed my visit.. a suggestion may be to add music to create more of an atmosphere

this place is ok. however i had to keep waiting at the bar for another tea bag as they keep them behind the bar. other weatherspoons let you help your self this one dont. so waiting around for 10 min for a tea bag is abit silly

Good local pub with a great range of beers. What sets it apart from other Wetherspoons is the staff who are excellent. When I've eaten here the food has been consistently good and amazing value. The Charlie Hall is a much needed asset to Erdington.

I have never seen a place left in such a dirty state as here before. The bar area needs a good cleaning, all of the tables are sticky with food & drink drying on them instead of being cleaned, there is a layer of dust on the wooden frames around the booths. The whole place is a health hazard waiting to happen.

Located in Erdington. The Charlie Hall is a solid enough pub, with a decent interior and good range and prices of drinks. The beer garden is small and not the best though so this isn't a great choice for a summers day.

La High Street se ha convertido en muy deteriorado a lo largo de los años y es ahora muy bastante triste ver el grado de deterioro. El recinto de la plaza no es nada más que un pueblo fantasma. Sin embargo, el Hall de Charlie parece ser un buen pub sólido. Centro vital para la comunidad local. Pedí mi comida, el servicio era bueno y llegó en un momento. El café es autoservicio y puede rellenar tantas veces como quieras! Sin alboroto, genial. Inodoros estaban limpios y frescos, y el personal era muy atento. Un miembro femenino del personal alrededor de la calle que venden sombreros de día para un patricio £1 y el gerente era visible en el piso. Me quedé muy impresionado. El desayuno era genial! :) Sin duda lo recomendaría. Todo por menos de 8 libras! Ganga.

Have been here quite a few times on the past and service has been excellent. However, since another Wetherspoon pub closed for refurbishment (the bishop vesey) the service at Charlie Hall is now terrible. The reason being that they moved the staff from the vesey to the Charlie Hall.

Visited with family for a breakfast , extremely pleasant staff and service was prompt, food was very reasonably priced and delivered to the table quickly and all correct , the breakfasts were delicious and would not hesitate to visit again

Después de haber visitado este pub en muchas ocasiones esta es la primera vez que he comido allí. Visitamos para desayunar, tuve un tocino sarni tostado y mi marido tenía un desayuno tradicional, ni nada a destacar. Sin embargo, el personal es amable y el lugar es limpio y ordenado, con un montón de fotos de Laurel y Hardy y Charlie Hall, que era un chico local que apareció en numerosas películas con el famoso dúo. Probablemente visita La próxima vez que en Erdington pero no será de ninguna prisa para comer allí.

Good staff, pleasant atmosphere and surroundings. Visited on a Saturday evening. There was plenty of seating. The food was hot and served quickly. Staff were pleasant enough for a chain pub. Music was not too loud and so conversation could be held easily.

Having read the reviews, we decided to give it a try for a quick lunch. We have been frequenting another pub which is rapidly going downhill. So....once inside well unusual design and decor. A strange selection of folk, from the elderly drunk in the corner to a young couple who were post punk/pre 70's in dress style.

Lugar concurrido, vinimos para comer la comida llegó rápido y era deliciosa, y excelentes precios, nunca había estado en sólo para las bebidas, pero el ambiente es bueno y el lugar es limpio. Sin duda volveremos, además el personal es amable y educado.

i have not been here for a while but went in today for a quick coffee before i went for an appointment. quite relaxing but it was 10.30 am. served very quickley. and relaxed for 20 min. however the toilets were revolting. did not see a cleaner anywere. if i new the loos were this bad i would not have visited. most weatherspoons toilets are clean but this was a horrible. come on weatherspoons sort it out. however the staff are friendly. i will come back in the future but sort the toilets out

We have eaten here for quite a while now. Friendly staff, good beer & great food. Always cooked to perfection. On Tuesday steak night your steak is alway cooked just the way you like it. We would highly recomend a visit.

Ok you are not expecting Heston Blumenthal working in the kitchens but what you do get is consistent food which is well cooked and quickly delivered to a decent standard. The staff are always pleasant and friendly and the manager has substantially improved things. The only negative is that the tables are not always wiped down as quickly as they could be but at busy times and staff running around you can partially excuse them for this. The landlord keeps a good pint and the rest rooms (lav's to you and me) are always clean and presentable. For a weatherspoons establishment I would put the Charlie hall in the to 10 % and better than many more expensive places. Well run and friendly is how I would sum up the Charlie hall.

I feel like this place was more of a get what you pay for, the prices are cheap and the food quality wasn't amazing but was okay. My friend ordered a wrap as always however this time round it was cold and it put her off from eating. I had the steak which was okay but I wasn't overly impressed. Don't know if I would recommend for food but seems like a great place to have a drink.

We hadn't been to the Charlie Hall for a while but, as we were in Erdington, thought we'd give it a go for lunch. I'm glad we did as it was a very pleasant experience. First of all, it is worth mentioning that the staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Yes, the place is getting a little tired in places, but the positives far outweigh that.I had the steak and kidney pudding and my wife went for ham, eggs and chips. All were served pretty quickly, hot and fresh, and very tasty. Lots of meaty gravy to accompany the pudding, plus a bonus of mushy peas as an option, what's not to like!It's also glad to see that you have a good choice of real ales available there too. As a CAMRA member I can use my '50p off a pint' vouchers to good effect, and the beer I had was well kept and crystal clear. Wetherspoons pubs are what they are. They offer good beer, a wide variety of filling food, and all at a fair price. The Charlie Hall also offers good service, so they are getting most things right.

Not to bad, no complaints off staff when I was dancing on the tables and smashing back jaeger bombs!

Had lunch here while shopping, the staff were very pleasant and we ordered the steak & kidney pudding with chips, peas and gravy. It was "two for £6.89" I think. It was nice and hot when it arived, the chips were a lovely golden brown and they could not have got any more meat into the pie if they had tried. I can see why it was packed! Have walked past this place before and didn't fancy it but certainly will be going again.

This pub is a little gem - very friendly, clean and consistently serving hot, tasty food at great prices. THe staff are all very friendly but I would single out Bev in particular as nothing is too much trouble. She loves her job and wants everyone to enjoy their time at The Chsrlie Hall - and they do as a consequence. I found this pub to be better in friendliness, service and cleanliness than the other Wetherspoons in Sutton Coldfield.

Thinking of giving up on going there. Once again, eggs royale were overcooked!Had to beg for promised extra toast because of no brownies.

Every meal I've had from breakfast to mixed grill has been goodReal drinkers pub but still welcoming enough when there with Jr for Brekkie and a cuppa.

On a recent visit had been spruced up a bit for summer. Long and deep, a bit gloomy interior and basically a drinkers pub in the centre of Erdington, but good food, clean tidy seating and 4 seat dining banks, back to back USA style. Conservatory at the back had been opened up on a sunny day into the garden at the rear, cool and refreshing space.This is not one for a car trip unless you have other things to do locally, parking a nightmare. Ranks well with anywhere else on foot in Erdington.

I have been to many wetherspoons and I know the food is the same across the board but this one seems to be much nicer. The bar has lots of staff so you get served immediately by friendly staff. The prices of lager are cheaper than all the local pubs too and cheaper than wetherspoons a few miles down the road.As I said the food is fantastic, no complaints at all. Piping hot breakfast and good portions. Tables are clean and staff available on the floor. Toilets immaculate.

I know that's your menu has been out for sometime now, and as a regularly eater and drinker here ...well, it's proper boring now! ...missing the roast of the day, or the Sunday lunch, the sausage and mash ...do I need to go on? Lol! ....there's not enough 'proper dinners' on it. I bought my mum and dad up a couple of weeks ago, and well, they seemed very disappointed too. When does the menu change again? ...bring back the stodge! Apart from that, the staff here are welcoming, friendly, hardworking (they are always on the go!), great pub, with excellent selection of ales. We sometimes pop in for breakfast, which is great ...love the toast!

We've just been to the Charlie Hall, where they'd actually set the place up as a lure for the pokemon for those who play the game, so the creatures come to you instead of you possibly getting hurt chasing them - and what a fantastic idea! I spoke to one of the staff about it, and he said it only cost £8 for the day, and they had lots of extra customers - one group of 5 I spoke to actually said it was the only reason they were there! Whichever staff member had the idea deserves a raise, especially since there are so many reports of people (especially kids) getting hurt due to not paying attention to traffic and so on. I truly hope Wetherspoons will consider rolling it out throughout the chain, perhaps once a month on a saturday or sunday, when parents are most likely to bring their kids in for lunch or soft drinks, and advertise it through their website and app?They also believe in helping customers with medical problems - my flatmate likes to do as much as he can for himself, such as going up to the bar to place our orders, and the staff like to carry his drinks to the table since they know he has grip problems - fantastic service at a reasonable price!

Yo star, the curry club is sick innit. Bf recommended the phaal, nearly blew my classics off! Lol. Well worth a blast, extra mango chutney is cheap too

I go here regularly, either for lunch, or for wine with friends. The food is fab, great prices too and service is quick. The drinks are reasonably priced too with a good selection. Nice atmosphere, real burning fire in the winter. Lovely beer garden for in the summer.

Visited for a team breakfast. I called the day before to ask them if they could accommodate 15-no problem. When we arrived a table was made up for us to ensure that we were all sitting together. Individual orders were cooked as requested including well done bacon for one of my colleagues. The staff really make this place. Food was hot and niceWould definitely visit again.

A few of family and friends for a birthday get together on Sunday .... Phone to say would be about 10 of us .. most would be eating . THE TABLE was set with a reseved sign on (thanks clare ) all food was hot yummy and tasty and didn't wait long ALL staff helpful friendly and cheerful thank you all !!. I and 3 other had the best Aberdeen angus steak with chips ( up sell ?? as nice to order sauce salad etc ) The STEAK WAS so nice tender tasty and best steak WE have HAD in ages !!

Quite busy for the time of day. Got served very quickly and food arrived a couple of minutes later. Opted for the regular vegetarian breakfast and filter coffee.Thoroughly enjoyed the food, eggs were very clean and just the right texture, three hash browns, quorn sausage, mushroom, beans and seeded toast.You can have a bacon, sausage or vegetarian option roll with a hot drink for £1.59! Bargain. Will return.

This massive pub on a quiet Erdington side street is quite nice. One of the few pubs in Birmingham that still had Haggis on as part of its Burns week special & it was lovely too. Haggis, neeps & tatties. Food & drink were reasonably priced & it tasted nice. Plenty of different food days, i.e. Fish Fridays etc.

Me and Harry go to the gym every Sunday and after breathing through our bums we partake in a beer at the Charlie, a carling each but better still a bag of the best pork scratchings ever! This place caters for the mature locals it is more of a social club, people have a fried brunch with a beer, happy days it is a great community pub with no hassle, well done JDW

Went here Saturday last looked like a typical working man pub was really surprised tho ordered a meal for 3 of us and within 5 minutes it was being served at our table piping hot. It was an excellent meal served by friendly staff much impressed thank you

Been using the Charlie Hall for around 10 years now.It's located just off the High Street in Erdington and may appear to be 'intimidating'. But honestly, in 10 years I've never seen a hint of trouble.Beer prices v reasonable and a vast array of beverage to try!!But what really sets this pub apart is the food. The breakfasts and Sunday Roasts in particular are excellent. Always plentiful and fresh.Service always spot on too.So to sum up, I know the location might put some people off...but honestly it's a great boozer....Give it a go!

The atmosphere can feel a little intimidating at times, simply because the customer base seems to be made up of a large percentage of tattooed men, but I have never witnessed and disturbances when having lunch so this may just be me being a wuss. The food is always great and the prices are very reasonable. Only thing I would mention is that there never seems to be enough salt and pepper pots and the staff usually have to search for one from another table. But definitely good value for money.

I ordered a phillysteak sandwhich it was terrible (because it was a fave of mine from America ) the steak was cooked hard like leather and the sandwhich resembled nothing like a Philly steak sandwhich .. When I complained the manager said " that's how we make it here " service CRAP FOOD CRAPPER avoid unless a alcoholic they only serve cheap beer here the rest is falsely advertised!

i love this place the staff are lovely im in there nearly every day getting a cuppa and breakfast and have been in there for dinner they have a lot of choice of food different clubs every day to choose from and they have a family area to . anyone thinking of going here I would say go u will love it

Regular here. Staff are friendly, food is good. The prices are amazing!! Would definitely recommend to anyone :) been going here for years!

hooray at last the quality of the real ales in here have improved both in quality and now they have a sparkler on them to,lets hope this standard can be maintained,what has not changed is the friendly staff and the food being well cooked and the value for money .

the sirloin steak was cooked perfectly well done to all the kitchen staff and bar staff me and family have really enjoyed our meal

We quite often call in to the Charlie Hall after shopping for a bottle of wine. The selection is pretty good and the prices are very fair. Our only complaint is that on our last visit the wine glasses were filthy despite the fact they had just been washed. Both of them has wine residue inside and lipstick outside. Replacements were quickly offered along with an apology, unfortunately the replacements were not much better. As we didn't like to complain again, I took the glasses into the ladies loo and washed them under the tap and dried them under the hand drier. I think they need to invest in a better dishwasher either human or machine.The wine was lovely and so were the staff.

What can I say its a friendly well presented pub with polite attentive staff who make it a cut above other Witherspoon establishments. Its well set out plenty of places to sit and you get a good pint. Food wise well you get what's on the menu which your standard Witherspoon a fair but its well cokes and well presented and if you Ask for a rare stake you get one cooked as you asked for. Its not the Savoy but then its a long way off the Savoy prices. Neither is it McDonald's though a burger and chips are a similar price but far better. You can see why this place is popular and a lot is down to the staff and the manager who take a pride in what they serve their customers.

I often have Sunday lunch here and it is normally very good - today was no exception.TripAdvisor needs me to use a hundred characters in the review, which is annoying.
