We came to the Old Club House as we were going to Buxton Opera House for a show. We tried to book online but it said the time wasn’t available but thought we would give it a go and see if there was space. We arrived about 5:45 and the eating area was quiet so managed to get in straight away! We were served by Cas who let us know the grill was being replaced next week so there weren’t any burgers available. That wasn’t a problem with us as we weren’t ordering burgers anyway. Cas was attentive and came over to us to let us know our food was on its way which was really nice , she also made sure we were enjoying our meal. Cas was lovely and really polite and friendly. We ordered the king prawn starter and Cas came over to us to let us know they’d run out of prawns and to offer an alternative. We ordered the prawns and chrozio and changed the prawns for chicken due to the above , halloumi fries , beef bourgingnon, Camembert sharer as a starter , the apple and blackcurrant pie and the caramelised biscuit cheesecake. All the food was lovely and came out pretty quickly for a Friday night. One of us had the Camembert sharer as a main, for two people the size of the Camembert may be a little small but as a main for one it was the perfect size. The prize was decent for two people and if we were coming again , we wouldn’t be mad!

Booked by phone as limit for online was groups of 6 and we were 7. Although they had the wrong time the lady was lovely and fitted us in with no fuss at all. Gorgeous, historic dining area, order at the bar food and drinks. All arrived promptly and everyone enjoyed it. Best was the fish n chips, roasts and burgers. Onion rings were a bit doughy but would still say 5 star value. I would go back.

The husbands both had the gammon egg and pineapple and we ladies both had the marmalade pork steak off the specials menu, delicious 😋 We were looked after by Beth and her colleagues and they were very friendly with nothing being too much trouble. The Old Clubhouse is a lovely period building typical of historic parts of Buxton literally next to the Opera House & very close to Pavillion & Gardens. I decided to have my lunch here during a busy Saturday afternoon when most places were very busy as was this. I ordered a drink at the bar & decided to sit in the adjacent dining room which is probably a little quieter than main pub area. I ordered Soup of The Day which was French Onion & the Cod Chips & Mushy Peas as mains. The soup was delicious just how I like it with some nice chunks of lightly toasted artisan bread. After this I expected alot from the mains but it was just ok with nothing particularly notable or wrong except the tiny portion of peas which was smaller than the pot of tartare sauce, otherwise generally ok for pub standard. Found the staff to be very nice & friendly & asked if all ok without being overbearing. Nice tradtional feel to this place with lots of dark wood panelling & I'm sure it will be very busy for pre-show drinks. Would return but probably try something else off the menu.

Lovely Greene King pub located opposite the famous Buxton Opera House. Visited on a Thursday lunchtime and the guy behind the bar who was also waiting on was extremely friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. The food and drinks were reasonable priced and the food was prepared and presented to Greene King's standards. A visit is well worthwhile but I would recommend booking in advance if there is an act on at the Opera House as it gets very busy pre showtime.

Disappointed with our visit this time. There is confusion over where to check in if you’ve reserved a table, do you go to the bar or wait to be seated as you enter? No one told us you had to order at the bar once we were seated. Last time we came here our order was taken at the table. When we did order a couple of dishes weren’t available as they’d sold out. There was a 30 minute wait on food. When the food did arrive, slightly earlier than we’d been told, the portions weren’t generous. It was ok but we’ve had better here.

The 2 bottles of prosecco we ordered weren't chilled and we were given IPA instead of Madri, one of the meals was forgotten, all in all a really disapppointing meal served by miserable staff who seemed like they didn't really want to be bothered, the room was cold, some of our party actually put their coats back on, I certainly won't be returning for a meal as the food is mediocre anyway apart from the poor service.

We were booked in for Christmas Dinner for 2.30pm as a table of 9. This is the second year we have been for Christmas Dinner after having a great time the year before, sadly this most definitely wasn’t the case this year and we won’t be back next year. When we got there you could tell the atmosphere from the other tables wasn’t great and we soon discovered why. As others have said there was a really long wait times in between meals - so long in fact it’s a good job we like one another as a family as it would have been one awkward long struggle. When the food did arrive - specifically the mains - some of it was burnt and inedible. As it was Christmas Day and we didn’t have much choice but to stick it out- our table opted not to complain as the staff looked quite frankly burnt out and I don’t think this was their fault- a manager should have been on hand to take the feedback and visit each table individually to explain and try to do some customer service control. To top it off we didn’t even get a choice of tea or coffee and mince pies at the end (not that we were bothered as we just wanted to leave) just some mugs left at the end of the table. I’m only giving it two stars as I really felt for our waitress and hope she had a Nice Christmas Day after dealing with probably was an awful shift.

Our family of 11 people had booked their food choices in advance for a meal at 1pm. The starter arrived and after quite a while the main course. This was very poor quality with veg underdone and not hot. Food looked as if it had been standing around. The staff were doing their best but it became obvious there were problems. We waited a long time for the sweets and after asking several times they arrived - poor Xmas pudding - cheese and biscuits OK. By this time we saw several tables complaining and staff trying to sort things out. We decided to not stay for coffee and mince pies and left at 4pm !!! On the way out I was stopped by other diners who were not happy. Not a nice experience for Christmas Day - no management sorting things out.

I’m giving three stars because the waiting time was ridiculous! We booked Christmas dinner for 13:30, we got the starters at 14:00 once finished we were served the main at 14:30 finished around 15:00 then we asked for desserts that took 1 hour and I’m not exaggerating, we were served the desserts at 15:54 (I took photos of when we received the food) after chasing twice for desserts they finally arrived but by that time we were quite annoyed as we wanted to have a walk around the town but at 16:00 it was dark already, we had our dessert asked for coffee and by 16:20 were done, asked for the bill but after waiting for 10 min decided to go to the till and pay. The pub has different rooms and they were nicely decorated with Christmas stuff but not the room we were sat in on the second floor, it didn’t feel very Christmasy. We were not expecting to spend 3 hours eating our Christmas meal (for 2 people) also we had already pre-chosen our menu, that’s why we’re surprised by the waiting time. I agree with some of the other reviews, it has very bad management, we felt sorry by the waiters they were running up and down and some of them literally sweating, it didn’t feel the pub has an organisation system what so ever. And other customers were complaining of the waiting time as well. We were served by different waiters all of them were running and trying their best to manage the workload. I don’t think we will come back for food maybe drinks but not food. The food was lovely though which is a shame after the experience we had!

We booked the Old Clubhouse for a family members 70th Birthday celebration! It was a disaster from start to finish. Our table was booked @ 2.00pm we finally had our starters served to us and 3.30pm - over an hour wait after we ordered. The prawns finally arrived covered in a luke warm sauce - dreadful. Then we waited for a further hour for the mains to arrive. My lamb shank arrived luke warm and was frozen in the middle along with a soggy and cold yorkshire pudding and vegetables that looked like this had been recooked and reheated time and time again! The whole experience was dreadful, awful food, a cold draughty room, the service was something like have never encountered in my life and never wish to experience again! The only two members of staff on duty were attempting to serve behind the bar and serve food - so I did actually feel sorry for these 2 as they clearly had to front the poor management of the place.

One tip for visitors to Buxton; don't assume you'll find a table at any of the many restaurants near the Opera House. We saw a wonderful production there and following a quick drink in a nearby bar we headed to our chosen restaurant at about 6pm. 'We are fully booked until after 9:30pm' we were told. This was repeated at all of the restaurants we tried. We had almost resigned to having a packet of crisps in our hotel room when we decided to try the Old Clubhouse. As a pub chain, it would not have been our first choice but it was our last chance. As it was, the dining room was fully booked but the very helpful and friendly manager. Oliver, spoke to the kitchen and said he could fit us in until 7pm. The menu was standard pub grub and my companion wished me luck in getting my steak rare. Well, we ate our words as well as our food. My companion's chicken pie was delicious with a lovely crisp and tasty pastry. And my sirloin was cooked perfectly, rare and properly stood before plating. Oliver had told us the wine list was 'in his head' but after asking some pertinent questions on preference for colour, grape, style, etc., he recommended a very pleasant and drinkable wine. We left feeling well fed, well looked after and very grateful to Oliver and his staff.

What a disappointing meal - the worst roast dinner ever. The staff did not know the menu - and one staff member seemed surprised that we asked her to take our order! This was no doubt due to the order and pay app which we were told about but we were too hungry to mess about downloading.Anyway - it turned out, after several trips to the kitchen to investigate and two staff members later, that we could have two courses for the special offer! Who knew!! This is a simple training issue and Greene King should be ashamed about this level of service.Eventually, after being told that most of our first second and third choices were not available, we got our roast beef dinners. Please please please show your staff how to make gravy. It was a mess on a plate - someone covered the meal in gloopy thick salty gravy and spoilt the whole thing. The sticky toffee pudding was still cold where it had not been micro waved sufficiently to defrost properly and the girl who I begrudgingly made a payment to for this crap lunch 'treat' was so unbelievably miserable that I felt she should have stayed at home in bed.I am not sure your staff were even following the correct recommendations for Covid-19 - no one checked we had registered with Track and trace (we did) or wiped down surfaces where we sat. ( The blue 'I am clean' signs were not at the table we were seated.)All in all - a disgraceful dining experience and not one I would recommend to anyone .However, following our visit, I hope your staff are now better informed and know more about the menu than they did at the beginning of their Sunday shifts!!!

After deciding to go here for lunch on Sunday with some friends we hadnt seen for a long time I was extreme disappointed when we 1st arrived the hand santiser by the entrance wasnt working and there was only 1 more near the kitchen which isnt very good in the present climate. We were then seated at an rather high table way too high for my 4 yr old granddaughter we were offered a high chair for her hmmm shes 4 very much doubt she would want to sit in a high chair. We noticed a table had become free so I asked if we could be seated there and the barmaid said no as she was about to reserve it for someone else as they'd specifically asked for that table anyway the barman used his initiative and seated us there. We ordered our food and to say I was extremely disappointed was and is an understatement my daughter and myself had the mix grill they came out with no sausages so they had to fetch some then the chicken well you could of used it as a door stop it was that dry and hard totally inedible the eggs were slimy yet burnt underneath we literally left most of it. When the waitress brought out the childs meal out she advised us the plate was warm warm that was the understatement of the year my daughter actually burnt her finger on the plate and they had put that in front of a 4 year old not good the childd meal was fish fingers which were totally inedible they were rock hard so she ended up eating the rice and corn on the cob we most certainly will not be returning to this pub for a meal and I wouldnt recommend it at all despite having only half of our bill refunded disgusting avoid

The board at the exit encourages reviews, so here goes.Booked in advance for a first family meal with my mother-in-law since Christmas: there was a helpful allergen section online, we could take our dog and I had positive memories from years gone by. I should have read the other reviews!! Our table was booked for 1.15pm. After attempting to download the app with no mobile signal on a few phones, we resorted to the understandably limited paper menu, and after 30-40 minutes I ventured to the bar to order by shouting (in order to make myself heard) at the barman. I was informed it would take an hour to get food, as they were busy. This was disappointing given that we made a reservation. Other places I’ve been to recently have paid attention to managing the bookings and walk-ins to ensure they didn’t exceed their capacity to function. Given the needs of our party, we decided to persevere. I wanted the chicken and mushroom pie and mash: only chips were available. My daughter wanted a kid-sized portion of scampi and chips: that wasn’t possible! I was able to order amended fajitas to remove dairy products for someone with allergies: success! Mother-in-law likes a nice cup of tea, so we decided to get one for her whilst we waited. Unfortunately, no hot drinks were available: the hot water heater was broken, and they didn’t have a kettle! Toilet trips were made: the gents stank of vomit; the main toilets for the ladies was out of order, so the backup, upstairs toilet was in use. It was impossible to wash your hands thoroughly in the tiny sink without bashing them on the taps, the hand dryer wasn’t working and there were no paper towels! At about 2.40pm we were humbly informed that they were out of chips! Someone had gone to the shop, eta unknown. We decided to give up! I do hope my ApplePay refund goes through. They did have hand sanitiser to use on the way out though - thank goodness!

Firstly let me just say I have attended the club House many times before and never had a issues but today was the worse so much so I will not be returning. I booked a table the night before for my daughters birthday, when we arrived they had no idea i had called and no table ready. The front of house staff were very nice and accommodating and managed to sort us a table pretty quickly however the table available was that wobbly it need a house brick under on leg just to level it off. We were then informed about using the app if possible which we were more than happy to do so but there is no signal so the app does not work so we ordered food and drinks the traditional way. The front of house staff had no idea what was available on the menu or not when taking our order meaning he had to return to let us know a couple of the meals were no longer available. One of the meals we asked to switch the fries to sweet potato fries which was excepted however when the meal arrived they had placed ordinary fries and i was informed thats all they had. Next came the desserts, there is a choice of two on the menu one of these was not available which is not an issue but really your staff should be aware of what is and what is not available at the time of taking the order which I think should be a basic requirement.

We had to order online and struggled due to no signal and the pubs WiFi kept dropping out (saw a few people pay at the bar so that must also be an option) the staff were friendly and brought water for the dog straight away, our food however took over an hour- we were given free drinks due to this from apologetic staff. We were happy with the service however...We then returned later in the day to watch the football and have some tea, the evening staff weren’t as friendly (but that’s due to the day staff being really good). we ordered a rum and coke via the app and when it came to me it didn’t taste right- (even tho he told me what it was when placing on the table) no apologies but they didn’t have rum so they used whiskey. The only problem was the limited menu on offer, with quite a few of the meal and drinks options unavailable.

The staff were really friendly and helpful, the place is well set up with safety features. The food was good pub grub and great value if you get the eat out discount. They have an app so you can easily order and they bought it to your table. The only issue was they are running a limited menu which was fine but upon ordering a lot of the dishes were out of stock and not able to be ordered.

Probably the worst pub food we have ever experienced.... first of all let me say that the front end staff are friendly, polite and courteous, we have no issues with the service. We were pre-warned about the hour wait for food, which we happily accepted. The food however..? Really not sure who or what you had in that kitchen on the 1st Aug but they really need some basic cookery training. I ordered the steak and ale pie, my husband the lasagne and my three children ordered the kids burgers. The burgers were ‘ok’, we had no issues, my pie turned up and I noticed that my gravy was just a jug of congealed jelly, I looked to my husband and he was just staring at his lasagne which seemed to be sitting on a pool of greasy water (must have been defrosted... awful)... anyway, he didn’t say anything at first and I just asked the waiter to change my gravy, the waiter was apologetic and made a joke that it was northern gravy (which was funny) but just as he took the gravy away, my husband and I started to tuck into our food... my pie was still frozen as I took a bite of meat from it!! And my husbands lasagne was freezing cold too, (although his cheese on top was bubbling away and hot, so really not sure what the chef had done?) We were mortified. The staff apologised and after about 30 minutes the food came back to us, by which point my children had finished their meals, my pie was now hot and edible and the gravy was ok,, however I had chips on my plate that had ketchup or a red substance on them!! Like the chef had reused chips from somebody else’s plate! My husband’s lasagne came back so overcooked that it was cremated and rock solid, he too had reused chips with red substance on them (It wasn’t lasagne)... my husband refused to eat his meal and to be honest I was so put off I couldn’t eat mine either. The manageress told us we’d receive a full refund which will credit our account in a couple of days... we ended up getting ice creams from the van across the way because the children didn’t receive their free desert (or child’s drinks for that matter, we realised that afterwards) so it was all just a shambles. Please can someone investigate this and spend some time sharing this feedback with the ‘chef’? After years working in the pub and restaurant trade, this was just a shocking and unacceptable experience for both my husband and I.

I have eaten here and drank here many times over the past few years and each time I haven’t had any issues, the food has always been brilliant. The staff are very friendly and helpful. During COVID-19 I have also been in and again everything has been very organised, I felt safe whilst eating my meals and enjoying drinks with my friends. I would 100% recommend

First ever time in Buxton and was very pleased by the service I received during my stay. The selection of food and drink was excellent, I was also very pleased by the fantastic service I received from the staff in particular Kevin who went above and beyond to help. Credit to management also as they’ve done a top job in applying social distancing. I felt safe the whole time as I wasn’t sitting near anyone and staff were well protected. 5/5 definitely recommend to anyone staying in the area to stop by this lovely place.

Went today to take my Father for lunch. I first of all couldn’t believe the state of the chair that was at the table, the cover had completely disintegrated showing the foam beneath it. It should have been in a skip!! I ordered a Kopparberg Gin with lemonade and received a rhubarb and custard cider !? Thought not a great start! My boyfriend ordered Greene King IPA. When they gave my Dad and I our drinks they told my boyfriend that the barrel needed to be changed. Still hadn’t received his drink 30 minutes later. We were planning to have lunch there but decided against it as none of the staff even thought to apologise!

Rang and booked a table for evening meal. When we arrived they had no record of our booking but did find us a table. Waiter sat us and asked us to order via the app which was fine. We then overheard him telling another table that they had ran out of some foods. We called him over and he advised they had run out of all signature dishes, chips (could have fries), pies, onion rings, coleslaw, curry and only had mushy peas! Our drinks came and bottle of tonic was spilt over the table. The food came, the chicken in the hunters chicken was totally over cooked, was dry and half of it was inedible. We had been very polite and accommodating through all of this and advised the waiter that the chicken was cremated. He said I will tell chef and see what can be done ..... he never came back and to top it all off there was no toilet paper in the toilet. In summary don't go for food

Called in on spec but a socially distance table was quickly found for us. Disposable menu's are provided with a recommendation that you down load the APP for table service. Instructions are on the Menu - see image. As we called after 6.00pm free parking was close by at the side of the opera house. Good deals on offer with this chain including the two main meals for £12. If you do not want to use the app then there was a facility to order at the bar. Overall, great value and good service in very pleasant surroundings.

Visited here for the first time for a pre-show meal - it could not be more convenient for Buxton Opera House! We had a warm welcome from the staff and were shown straight to our reserved table in the dining area. The food is typical chain pub grub but suited what we were after, and we found all the dishes to be hot, fresh and tasty. The service was particularly efficient.

Shame about there being no food, friendly staff and well mannered even in heated situations, behind a lady at the bar and the male member of staff said they can do coffees but the coffee wand was broken so they won’t be as frothy as usual, she said it was fine... I was sat behind her and over heard her saying “there taking there time” there was two members of staff and out of know where it became incredibly busy ! She demanded that he sorted it out by shouting and snapping her fingers... she was incredibly rude and inconsiderate! He couldn’t of been more apologetic, for what it’s worth my cappuccino was lovely !

Two of us visited this splendid pub twice this December . The main real ale beers are Greene King which produces some very fine beers . The food menu is good and very reasonably priced . We first visited one lunchtime and the second time we went in the evening and watched the Joshua v Ruiz junior title fight on one of the wide screens . It was shortly before the general election date and other guests included visitors wearing party rosettes which gave a very good community feel to the place .

Although there is a lovely atmosphere and the staff are friendly, as a greene king establishment this surprises me. I would recommend for a drink but be mindful of having other options for dinner.

We visited for a pre-theatre meal and drink - pre-booked on spec from the website. I wish we'd not bothered. The 'background music' was loud enough to interfere with conversation, the meal was 'canteen' at best and the 'by the glass' wine had to be returned because of the excessive use of chemical cleaner. To add insult to injury, the service was slow, although the waitress was pleasant (and apologetic).

Visited the old clubhouse Sunday the 18th for a Calvary after speaking to one member of staff “Hannah” saying that there was an offer on them 2-4-1 we decided to book, after ringing back on Saturday morning to confirm the booking speaking to “kieran” saying he wasn’t sure if the offer had rolled in yet but after the lack of communication between staff members he said he would honour the price that we got told, on arrival the establishment was busy and understaffed but after speaking to Kieran he explain there was a new system for rostas and staff was unsure on when they were suppose to start, whilst dealing with Kieran there was a rather rude aggressive lady who was unhappy about the prices and in my opinion he dealt with it professionally and accordingly the lady revived her money back after being over charged and was rather happy with her outcome, the attention to detail from both bar staff how busy it was and even with them being understaffed the establishment was clean/ presentable but most importantly had a family friendly vibe ! we will see you again soon !
