What a great tradditional Inn. 800yrs of history and character. Superb location, albeit down a few country lanes. All bedrooms with ensuite. Spacious and comfy. Fully loaded pub with snooker room, and darts room, bar and lounge and quiet reading snug type lounge. Large dinning room with breakfast bar. Large beer garden. Fully operational commercial kitchen. Stock your own bar and music player that feeds music to all areas. We had 20 family members in our group and all enjoyed the facilities. Would recommend to others who want a family holiday. We all did our own sightseeing in the daytime and came home to the pub to eat as a family and enjoy pub type nightime, with games, music, chat and a drink. Awesome!! Lastly, great and friendly host, always on hand if needed, but allowed you to enjoy the facilities. Superb !!

We’ve been staying there many times over the years and considered it a bit of a haven from excellent food that varied every night to staff that were such characters they made our stay. Unfortunately on our last visit everything had changed new owner who only appeared to book us in and take our money when we booked out and prices increased considerably for just a few cushions and pictures in the rooms menu was the same every night with the dish of the day on for a week!

Delightful setting in quaint English village that offers delicious meals from a limited but carefully chosen menu (so not overpowered with choices) supplemented by a decent selection of local beers and served by charming staff. Well worth seeking out even if roads are a “bit of a challenge”!

Torbryan is almost a cul de sac village just outside Ipplepen, therefore easy to get to, follow brown signs, but feeling as though it’s the quietest village around. It’s opposite the church which is used only for the occasional service given the place a museum feel. The Inn is utterly charming inside, has recently undergone a subtle transformation and is now advertised as an hotel as well. We booked a lovely table on its own for Monday evening. The place was quiet, which added to the calm quietness of the village outside. The food was good, nothing pretentious and with minimal choice to suggest it is pretty much cooked from fresh. I wonder if the chef could be a bit more adventurous with the steaks? Onion rings and out of a packet chips are rather passé these days. The flatiron steak is a good start so a few more tweaks would take the steaks out of the ‘seen it all before’ mould. Great choice of gins and fun cocktails complement the food wine list. There’s a lovely sitting area, with many books and huge fireplace that should be wonderfully cosy in the winter. Highly recommended for a quiet evening meal.....particularly when the background music, why is it necessary? is turned down so conversation can remain hushed.

Food very good, menu varied and portions very good. Group of six and all ate different, no complaints other than had almost sold out of rump so we were limited as to who could have it!! Slow service at the bar, prices reasonable, fair. Waitress in shorts didnt look overly professional but friendly. Fault.....10pm on a saturday night and told bar closing as she had to get home. The Grade 2* listed building is in a delightful location. I only had a couple of starter dishes, as I had a concert to go to. Both were excellent: the baked goat's cheese, pear and walnut salad with red onion jam was delicious. And so was the roasted asparagus with poached egg and chorizo. The service was personable and professional. A very nice experience (though the narrow and windy access lanes a bit nerve-racking). Pevnser's guide to the church make it sound interesting, too. Must visit next time.

What an absolutely golden gem of an old 13th century inn absolutely fell in love with our Easter weekend stay there everyone we saw were warm and welcoming from the owner staff and locals the room we stayed in was the dragonfly it was beautifully decorated and the little touches like a mini fridge with a small jug of milk in and complimentary drink selection were lovely and dotted around the inn were jars of mini chocolates and shelves of books for you find interesting to read if you want to cosy up the old fire places with throws over the sofas or a leisurely walk in the path ways through fields of grazing sheep everyone we met during our stay was more than happy to give us info about walks and interesting places to visit it is steeped in history and added to the pleasure of our stay last but not least we stayed based on bed and breakfast and where to start we were looking forward to this and it didn’t disappoint there was such a lovely choice of cereals fresh fruit and jams fresh percolated coffee pots of tea dried fruits and cooked breakfasts which were freshly prepared hot and delicious in a room which over looked the old Norman church we found our stay to be honestly the best we have ever had and will be booking another stay there when ever we visit Ipplepen lovely and atmospheric x

Lovely little stopover seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Nice rooms but unbearably hot, 2 radiators on and I think under floor heating in the bathroom too. Had to turn them all of and open the window (why are they on at the end of June?). Nice choice on the menu and the food is 5 star in my opinion. Breakfast also good but doesn’t start till 8:15 so a bit late when working away but fine if you’re on holiday I guess. Peaceful and quiet, would definitely stay again as long as I didn’t need to start work early.

Stayed here unexpectedly for a night and what a beautiful old Inn. Dates back pre 13th century.. beams, old stone walls and lots of wonderful features. My single room was more like a little suite with separate lounge and bathroom. It has been modernised but they have done this very well so it feels clean and comfortable but retains lots of charm and carved wood furniture. The pub downstairs wasdog friendly although they are not permitted to stay. Friendly dogs, staff and locals made me very welcome. They do good decent food and the breakfast was great

Stayed here recently with friends whilst playing golf in the area. What a great place. Torbryan is a tiny village with a lovely old church and this pub is an old 13th century coaching inn that was once on the road from Plymouth to London. We were made to feel very welcome (both by the locals as well as the owner and staff) as soon as we arrived. The rooms were very nice indeed and very comfortable. The bar had a great choice of beers, lagers, cider etc. We all ate in bar that evening and had an excellent tasty, freshly cooked and excellent value 3 course meal accompanied by some very pleasant wine. The evening ended with a couple of night caps by the log fire. Breakfast was superb, lots of choice and all freshly cooked. All in all a top class visit. We will definitely return. Highly recommended.

We went for an evening meal last Saturday and really enjoyed the food. They were very accommodating (we had booked that afternoon) and were friendly. Only downside was that we were in a separate room from the main bar, towards the back of the pub. We would have much preferred to be in the bar area, as there seemed to be more atmosphere and was cozier. The room we were in was a little lacking in character and atmosphere. We would happily go back, but would ask if we could be in the bar, or a more public area.

An interesting old inn in lovely countryside worth the long drive though windy country lanes. We were in the Badger room which had plenty of space for the 3 of us and the room was modern and clean with a lovely view out onto the cow paddock. Dinner was pretty good though a little expensive and the included breakfast was good and hearty. Loved the little historical aspects such as the marks on the timber wall from a Spanish Armada ship where keys have been swinging during rough sailing. Access to at least 2 of the public rooms was restricted as they were closed off and in the dark with furniture covered in sheets and could not be used. The downstairs areas were all a little dark, especially with all the dark timber.

Church House offers a varied menu of classic British dishes. We visited in a group of four, and we all enjoyed well cooked food. Service was friendly and effective without being stuffy. Main menu dishes are about £14, so this is not rock-bottom pricing, but value for money compares very favourably with the local competition. Nice food at a price that won't break the bank.

Problems with the room I was initially allocated (Butterfly) were quickly resolved by moving me to Badger which is a family room on the ground floor. I say ground floor because this 13th century inn is full of character which includes twists and turns and stairs. Each room has a different theme which is reflected in the soft furnishings. I liked the additional touches of bottled water and a delightful jug with fresh milk in the small fridge. I wasn't so keen on the lack of a blind at the bathroom window which was just covered with a net curtain. I was assured by staff that there was only a field overlooking the room but it still made me feel slightly uncomfortable as there was a area with flower planters outside.

A blonde lady watched us walk in and then walked through us to get back behind the bar - no welcome, no smile. Anyway, we got a our table which we had asked for (thank you) so that my 5 year old could visit the fabulous library area with us able to keep an eye on him. Everyone is so friendly and accommodating and the place itself is steeped in history, lots of stories to tell I'm sure! I will be returning, and will be recommending my friends and family to visit also.

My partner and I love good food and really enjoy writing a good review if we've had a good night out. I have only written one bad review since using this side of trip advisor.However. . . Five of us booked a table for 7.15 last night, Saturday night. When we arrived we were for some minutes ignored and there was then some confusion as to where we were going to sit. This was sorted and we were pointed to our table rather than shown to it. The menus were handed out quickly and politely. There was then a very long wait before anyone came to take out order. The menu looked pretty good and there was an a la carte menu along with a 'specials' menu. When it eventually came to ordering there was a hitch in as far as two people wanted a venison haunch steak from the a la carte menu. There was only one left! This was sorted by one of the party going for steak with peppercorn sauce instead. I ordered pigeon breast from the specials, pan fried with bacon and potatoes, another ordered fish pie and the fifth member of the party ordered turkey, ham and leek pie. We had to ask for the wine list - it wasn't with the menus. Then having ordered a bottle had to send a wine glass back because it was dirty. Soooooo. . . we sat and chatted, and sat and chatted, and sat and chatted and sat and sat and sat. During this wait the couple on the table close to us were served and the girl found that her pigeon breast was so tough that she couldn't eat it. My heart sank! Pigeon can be chewy but that's what teeth are for. I determined to ask for a steak knife as a sharp knife is always a good idea if meat might be less than tender. I'll give the place their due they did offer the girl an alternative. We continued to sit and chat above the sounds of our rumbling stomachs. Remember we were booked for 7.15 - well at 8.30 I went to the loo and managed to catch one of the waitresses. I asked if there was a problem as we'd been waiting so long. I was told 'We're very busy.' [There were plenty of empty tables and a fair few folk sitting with knives and forks waiting but I truly would not say the place was full to bursting - neither was there the rush of waiting staff dashing from the kitchen with laden plates] There was no 'Gosh I'm so sorry I'll see what I can do to hurry things up,' she didn't return but at 8.35 the bar manager? front of house? came over to our table and repeated that they were very busy. In return I pointed out that they shouldn't accept bookings if they couldn't cope. It isn't acceptable to book a table for 7.15 and still be waiting to be served after 8.30. He offered a bottle of wine in recompense for the wait and promised our food would be with us in 10 - 15 minutes. It finally arrived at 8.50. We then had to ask for more potatoes as between the 2 people on the table who'd ordered them only 6 small new potatoes had arrived one small bowl. We were initially told that this was between the two people who had ordered potatoes. Another bowl was then brought shortly afterwards and when were half way through eating another small bowl was put on the table. Thankfully the food when it finally arrived was pretty good. The venison steak was tougher than my pigeon which was as expected chewy but quite cuttable with a steak knife - the venison steak didn't have a steak knife. I'll be happy to be inspired by the pigeon recipe. The venison has a juniper and blueberry sauce which sadly just didn't come through to the taste buds. The fisherman's pie and turkey pie were I believe fine. The steak was good though the peppercorn sauce was disappointing given that there was an extra charge of £2.00 for it. We also had to ask for salt and pepper to be put on the table.Puddings of two creme brulees and one chocolate cheesecake were orderd. My creme brulee still had a distinct scattering of caster sugar under the caramel however tasted fine. The chocolate cheesecake tasted really good and was nicely presented. When we asked for the bill and were looking at it to divvy up the costs my friend was appalled to find that he'd been charged not £2.00 for his peppecorn sauce but £3.50! You know this was almost the final insult. He queried this and it was adjusted . . . but. . . Thankfully the food wasn't bad - not perfect but perfectly acceptable. BUT there only appeared to be 3 front of house staff and god alone knows what was happening in the kitchen. Is this an issue regarding lack of staff, lack of staff training or just lack of care? If the kitchen can't cope with the amount of covers required then more help is needed in the kitchen. If the front of house staff can't cope then again more staff are required. If this place could be made to run more efficiently then it honestly would be really good but sadly I just won't recommend it or be going back any time soon.

The food in the restaurant is exceptional for a country pub. All of the pies are home made and delicious. The portion sizes are very generous...if you want to have a dessert avoid having a starter!! The restaurant is very popular with the locals so a reservation is necessary. My criticism would be the unflexibility of the staff...residential guests arrived just about 9pm and were unable to obtain any food...not even a sandwich was offered. The staff are not interested in offering service or engaging with their clients which made for a disppointing evening.

We stayed as a family(16 of us) for a local wedding and received excellent service above and beyond normal expectations. All staff were friendly and helpful, the rooms were very comfortable and both breakfast and dinner were very tasty. We would happily recommend this inn to others and look forward to staying again.

This Inn is a delight. We stayed for three nights to visit family who lived nearby and we loved it. It dates back originally to the 11th century and its history is in a folder in your room. There are lots of beams; character; a secret tunnel; an ancient door; narrow corridors; steps and stairs; history; a good bar; a comfy lounge area that we called a "Snug" but it wasn't small and had three comfortable sofas to sink into and relax. The Inn is set in beautiful surroundings, deep in the country with very narrow roads to find it and it is opposite the old church, which in itself is very interesting. The staff are all very friendly and helpful, breakfast was very good starting with helping oneself to juices, yoghurts, fruit, toast, and coffee and tea, followed by ample choices from the cooked menu. We would certainly stay again should we ever be in that neck of the woods again. It is a truly delightful place.

It's like a little oasis once you have travelled down narrow lanes. Ample parking with a pretty church. This is a 13th century Inn and the bar and restaurant have maintained many of the old features. The bedroom is stylish with modern bathroom/shower. Beautiful towels (important for us). Breakfast was delicious, hot food cooked to order. The evening meal was also delicious - we had lemon sole and venison. The staff were welcoming. Well worth a visit. We hope to return when next in Devon.

Excellent accommodation. Very good food , highly recommended. Quiet location and very rural. Roads are typically Devon (narrow and windy) hence care needed when travelling around

The new owner has brought a blast of fresh air to this truly lovely Devon pub, which over the last 15 years or so has never fulfilled its potential. At last! Four of us had a truly scrumptious meal there last night - perfectly cooked duck, chicken and pork belly, served piping hot by charming staff and accompanied by delicious vegetables. And a great little jazz band playing in the bar. This was after a gin tasting in another part of the pub, again beautifully done and delivered by a local wine company. It couldn't have been a more extraordinary evening - as well as the jazz and the gin, there was a wake and a birthday party. And it all worked! Congratulations, Amanda and team - the Old Church House Inn is, at last, in safe and capable hands.

We had a flying visit and only stayed around an hour as we had plans. We explained this to the waitress and the food came quickly and was very good.We had wanted to visit this pub as we had seen it on 'Most Haunted'.The pub oozes history and has some very cozy areas to sit, just wished we'd had longer to soak up the atmosphere.

This was our third visit to The Old Church House Inn, we keep coming back: tucked away down unnamed lanes (take care walking and driving), drawn by the great hospitality at the Inn where tourists, regulars and business visitors seem to blend seamlessly. If you like your hotels bistro style and modern this little place probably would not please you, however for those who like pristine white tablecloths and eclectic olde worlde style, you are in for a treat. The bedrooms/bathrooms are clean and up to date, some have underfloor heating in the bathroom. The rooms are themed tastefully - Badger, Fox, Otter and so on - my only dislike is the noise from the heating/generator during the night. Breakfast is plentiful and flexible, supper has generous portions, a small but varied menu. There are daily specials and fresh locally caught fish, served by staff who do their best to make your stay a pleasure.

16 of us met for a social gathering at this venue. The dining room was very good, food was ok but not above average. Service was a bit chaotic. We had all pre ordered but there was some confusion. The Inn certainly had plenty of character.

We stayed for 2 nights on a bed and breakfast option. Our room was the ' Fox' room which had a small lounge area, a lovely comfortable bed and en suite with a powerful shower. The breakfast had various options including a full English which was freshly cooked and really enjoyable. We ate there on both evenings and the food was excellent. The bar was well stocked with a good variety of beers and larger. However was very pleasantly surprised to also have a huge selection of local Gins which was a real treat.Staff incredibly helpful and friendly and would certainly return

This Inn is dated back to the crusades. The building is amazing . from the car park not at all what you would expect inside. The bar has a very old fireplace and was fullof regulars who were so welcoming and pleasant. The atmosphere could not be more appealing , the bar led to little nooks for tables ready for eating and then at the back a cosy snug with another roaring fire. Our bedroom was a suite a small cosy sitting room and a very smart bathroom down the little hall the bedroom three windows all of which gave a wonderful full of the county not a house in sight only noise in the morning was the birds. The breakfast no complaints a selection fresh fruit yoghurts cereals bread for toasting and a proper toaster not one of those rolling toasters that just warm the bread.Cooked breakfast fresh and really tasty the scrambled eggs are to be tasted to be believed they were just perfect!!The Inn is being renovated room by room but not loosing any of its charm. Just a suggestion could they fix the floor boards in the bedroom I could not get up in the night without waking my husband up the boards creaked with every step . Please look at the first floor roof garden such a brilliant idea, so pleasant to look out on from our bedroomIn all a very very good stay and will be going back

This was the second time we made the trip to this lovely old pub, It really is a gem, very picturesque and quaint with a long and interesting history, it's tucked away at the end of a no through road near the old church, as the name would suggest. Extremely welcoming and friendly with lovely log fires burning throughout . We sat in the bar area in front of a fire with our little dog and once again enjoyed good tasty food.We had a generous fish pie with assorted veg, all perfectly cooked and delicious, for pudding my partner had spiced apple crumble while I tucked into a large slice of indulgent orange and nut roulade, umm yummy. The dishes are home cooked, good and hot and well presented. There was a choice of vegetarian meals that will suit our daughter when we take her. The pub is spotlessly clean too. All in all, a thoroughly good evening out, we will be back soon, excellent.

Great setting just off the beaten track! A pub that is full of character and charm with lovely wooden beams and open fire. Staff very helpful and friendly and you are made to feel welcome from the from the moment you arrive. We had a table for four and the food and service were both very good. I had liver and bacon which was the best I had ever had so very happy! The pub pies were also excellent. If you want fine dining, go somewhere else. If you yearn tradition and good honest food then this is definitely worth putting on your wish list!

If you're looking to have dinner in a quintessential English pub then this is the place for you. Full of old world charm, with open fires, stone walls, beams and plenty of nooks and crannies to explore. We live nearby in Ipplepen, so often enjoy a relaxing walk down to Torbryn, stopping in The Old Church House Inn for some refreshment. Up to now we had never eaten in there before, but did so at the weekend. Our meals were delicious and the staff appeared friendly and efficient.

There should be a government warning about this pub. You should be warned about how lovely it is. So nice to walk into a pub that's still a pub. It's how a pub should be. We went with friends for the first time last week and we will certainly visit again. Great atmosphere with friendly locals, lovely staff and then the food ‼️ OMG this is what pub food should be like. Fresh, cooked on site and a desperate Dan size portion. I could not recommend this pub any more. It's a proper pub with proper grub. Go you will love it.

The perfect spot for breakfast, coffee, lunch or dinner when in Shaldon. Service is superb, food offering has good choice, well cooked, reasonably priced. Absolutely love stopping for a coffee and cake on the terrace area overlooking the river. Can’t wait to go back,

A lovely much needed addition to this town! Always greeted with a smile and a chat. Friendly place to grab a bite to eat and drink. You never know what is going to be on the menu, always something a little bit different but usually a safe option for others wanting something more usual. However I would say a set menu is something this place could benefit from. Especially being a mum and wanting to take my child somewhere, it’s not always convenient to just see what’s on the board today, as it’s not always child friendly! But other than that it’s a nice little place that I hope sticks around for a while

We were welcomed by the head bar man, what a gentleman & a legend taking the time to talk to us. We had visited Buckfast Abbey & drove through this quaint little village, parked cheaply in the pay & display & popped into this small village pub. Great little traditional pub, pool table on the right hand side, very clean & throughout. Good selection of beer & ales. We sat in their well tendered gardens. Definitely recommend for a stop off.

We used to visit this place a lot under the previous owners as it was a fab place to bring our little one. Sadly we were sorely disappointed on our first trip under new ownership. The back “play” room was cold with no lights or background music and the few toys there were not in a good state at all. When we went to order food they said all they had on was hot drinks and cake. As we’d arrived with a hungry little boy looking for lunch we left without getting anything and, very sadly, had to resort to a local chain rather than supporting a small independent business 😕
