This is the nicest Sunday roast I have had out for a good few years. Food beautiful and Sue & Gary are hilarious and can't do enough for you. Great portion size and great atmosphere. This is just how a village pub should be, great job guys.

Popped in for a drink on our way through. Wonderful atmosphere, really friendly, warm and homely. Chatted to staff and customers as if they had known us forever. Such a welcoming place, lovely staff, reasonable prices, decent selection of drinks and beautiful building. Didn't have time for food this time. Genuinely very pleasant visit.

Well we just popped in for a quick drink & I was blown away by the welcome! There was a problem with our payment method but they worked round it with landlady Sue (I think) saying we weren’t going without a drink. We had 2 dogs with us who were accommodated beautifully with dog biscuits & thoughtful consideration that one of our dogs was not the best behaved with the pub dog! To top it all we managed to break a glass which was graciously dismissed. Never experienced such warm hospitality, honestly - we will be back & will try some of their scrumptious looking food. Thank you for making my day!

We went for a meal, locally, and feel this place has gone downhill. The staff were very welcoming and friendly but that was the highlight. We were surrounded by fruit flies throughout the meal (I managed to kill 8!). The 3 cheeses only consisted of 2 and I’m not sure you should deep fry hard cheese. The prawn cocktail did not come with the crusty roll as stated on menu - it came with half a slice of bread. The mains were disappointing. Rubbery gammon, poorly cooked steak and soggy batter on fish. Desserts - melted ice cream. Cutlery and glasses were dirty. Not quite the celebration we hoped for.

Whilst visiting my Brother this weekend, we took him for a Sunday lunch here and so glad we did. They offered chicken, beef, lamb or belly pork with all the trimmings for £10.95 or any 3 meats for £13.50. I had the belly pork, my brother had the beef and my sister had the chicken - all meals came with mashed potato, roast potato, large Yorkshire pudding, stuffing, broccoli, carrots, cabbage, parsnip and lashings of gravy. It was so nice yet we couldn’t eat it all - we were well and truly stuffed full ! The waitress was lovely and nothing was a problem. Will definitely recommend this place and will go back soon.

Whilst visiting our brother in Gedney we called here for lunch.we asked if they could accommodate 5 of us without a booking - they checked and agreed it was ok - even moved a couple of tables so we could all sit together which was great. We ordered drinks (2 rose wines, lager shandy, lager and lime, orange juice with lemonade) which came promptly and then we ordered our food. We all had roast dinners and they arrived quickly and my goodness, they were huge, plates red hot as was the food. We all chose gammon and chicken and on the plate was gammon, Yorkshire pudding, stuffing, roast potatoes, mash potatoes, cauliflower cheese, parsnips, carrots, broccoli and gravy! They then brought out a plate of chicken breast slices - thick ones at that and a gravy boat and we all helped ourselves - we polished the lot off and were absolutely full to bursting ! The ambience of the place was lovely and homely. The total bill came to just under £57 which we thought was well worth it - we will be back again next time we visit our brother.

Took out my daughter for a meal, as my granddaughter was having a girls night. owning it had been closed for some time, having been before. On entering we went to the bar, I asked for a Southern Comfort & American dry/Dry ginger, the bar person said that he had never heard of then, he had only served it with lemonade, which my daughter agreed too. I have never before come across a pub not stocking American Dry/Ginger Ale. We went to our take, gave our order and waited 45 minutes for our meal. And the restaurant was not busy, only 2 other tables, 1 of 2, and 1 of 5. My daughter ordered the Mix Grill, asking for the steak to be Med/Rare, when she tried it, it was well done, she did say it was not what she had ordered and we where told that £1.00 would be taken off the bill. Food was good, for me portion were to big. The server was very polite. Toilet where clean which is a way I judge a place, full marks. I don`t think I shall be returning, due to the time it took to receive our meal.

We live locally and normally visit here weekly for Sunday lunch. We were on holiday on Friday 4.5.2018, we decided on the spur of the moment to go for lunch. We know both the manager and the chef. We asked for sirloin steak and were offered ribeye steak. We immediately said yes. After a short wait our meals arrived. Accompaniments were grilled tomatoes, chips, mushrooms and my all time favourite, onion rings. Steak was ideally cooked and everything was fresh. Sadly at the moment there is limited lunchtime cooking, and Sunday is traditional lunch only, but well worth visiting. Telephoning to make a reservation is advised, even to leave a message on the answerphone.

We went for Sunday lunch yesterday (18.3.2018), after a long absence. Since this establishment has changed management the meals, particularly Sunday lunches, have improved tremendously. Sadly it had gained a bad reputation but now need the old customers to return again, in order to appreciate the improvements. Once tried thier Sunday lunch you will be hooked on returning, again and again. They are open only at limited times during the week, please telephone and check. In all instances better to phone first, they do have an answerphone so leave a message.

We stopped off on a Sunday afternoon so only roasts on the menu. Portions were huge and we are big eaters but couldn’t finish our meals. The food was perfectly edible but a bit bland. I noticed a previous review said the decor was a bit dated, which it is. I don’t mind that if the place is a proper beer pub, but the main ale on offer is John Smiths which is more fizz than ale. We travel to Lincoln from Norwich a lot and there are better places to eat on the route.

My husband and I called in on a Saturday night looking for something to eat. We walked in to the restaurant side of the building which also had a bar. The place was deserted and the décor is in a time warp. We went to the bar where my husband ordered a beer and I fancied a gin and tonic. I asked if they had any flavoured gins and I think if I had asked for a ticket to the moon they could have not have looked more confused. I think this huge trend has passed them by so I settled for a regular gin.

We arrived here as we were passing through from Whitby to our home in Norwich. Its was 2.15pm on the Sunday before Christmas when we arrived so first question was "are you still doing food" After some deliberation we were told no as they had cleared everything away. They must have been chomping at the bit at 2pm to do this we thought. Never mind can we have a sandwich or a bowl of soup or anything as we were weary travellers. No, no and no were the resulting answers. We ordered a drink at least it was refreshment. Whist imbibing we looked around. The wall lights were the type that had 2 bulbs but each one only had one squiggly energy saving bulb making them look very out of place. We realised that the lack of bulbs was responsible for the dire dark atmosphere in the bar. Even the bar itself was very dim and not very appealing. So here we have a pub that looks great from out side but is dreary inside and the two staff don't care if your hungry or not. With pubs going out of business on a daily basis maybe if this one goes the owners may reflect and think why did they not offer what the customer wants. OK you may not be able to offer Sunday lunch all day (although others do) but why not sandwiches or other cold snacks? Why no mulled wine giving its gorgeous spicey smell? Why not a cauldron of soup with some fresh bread. Why not make the place look inviting? What ever happened to basket snacks ? quick and easy to make when your restaurant is closed. Pie and Chips maybe? The owners must be rich enough not to need the money if so why not buy some light bulbs !I cant comment on what the food would have been like although in the pubs defence the diners were giving it praise. Its no wonder people go abroad where service is 500% better than the UK but come on guys this isn't rocket science your turning money and custom away

We had a traditional Sunday lunch on 1 May 2016. We had previously booked a table and I would certainly recommend booking, otherwise, one is likely to be disappointed; as we noticed on this Sunday, as people were unfortunately turned away. The restaurant was lovely an clean and our table had a reservation sign on the table. We were greeted by a very pleasant young man, wearing a shirt with the establishment name on it. He took our drinks order and left us with the "meats" on offer board.A choice of beef, lamb, pork or turkey/chicken were on offer. Once the meat is ordered it is plated up in the kitchen with roast potatoes and parsnips, swede, mashed potato, stuffing all with some gravy. Then there is a dish with cauliflower cheese, cabbage, carrots and broccoli along with a gravy boat with the most delicious gravy. We were asked if we required any condiments, which brought freshly made in individual pots.If you are not fully satisfied at this point, then there are desserts to look forward to. Most of these are made by the very talented Chef, Sue. Besides things like cheesecake, apple pie etc, the most superb specials are also available. I partook of a splendid meringue nest filled with liqueur flavoured cream and fresh strawberries served upon a beautiful royal blue glass plate. Don't forget one eats with their eyes first. I would recommend this establishment. They are not open Mondays nor I believe Tuesdays. There is also quite an extensive lunch menu for the rest of the week. Also dinner is also available. All are reasonably priced.

We were camping nearby here. And decided to eat out for our last night. We were made to feel very welcome at the Old Black Lion, and were extremely well looked after. We had our dogs with us, so were seated in the small bar area, which was lovely, very much a traditional country pub, with a low beamed ceiling and a fireplace. We ordered drinks and were given menus, I ordered the 10oz rump steak and my wife ordered the fish and chips. The chef then told us that two beef bones had arrived in that days meat delivery, and asked if she could give them to our dogs! (who now won't walk past a pub door without wanting to go in☺) The steak was cooked to absolute perfection and was delicious, as was the very generous portion of fish and chips. We had sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce for dessert, which was absolutely to die for, well worth the extra calories! All in all a fabulous meal in friendly surroundings, we'll be sure to go back if we visit the area again in future.

Well, well, well this is nothing at all like my last visit. Praise where praise is due. Phoned on Tuesday before Easter and managed to book a table for my husband and myself for Sunday lunch. When we walked in we were met by a very smartly dressed member of staff, who showed us to our table. Because I am slightly disabled they seated us to avoid having to negotiate the steps. As we were being seated we were asked what we would like to drink. We were introduced to the other serving staff, who were two young brothers both of whom were very presentable; unlike the presentation of our waiting staff on our previous visit. Drinks were served promptly and asked if we had decided what eat. Their Sunday lunch comprised of - turkey, beef, pork, lamb with a selection of veggies. After a short wait our meals arrived. Piping hot, and on the plate with the meat, was roast potatoes and parsnips, swede, stuffing, creamed potato, broccoli Yorkshire pudding. This was all topped off with the most wonderfully tasting gravy. In a separate dish was, beautifully cooked, cabbage and cauliflower cheese. Sue is the chef and the vast improvement in the quality of the food and waiting staff show. WOW the "pudding" afterwards was a delight - chocolate and more chocolate. There were other desserts which I am positive would be just as delicious. I would recommend this experience highly but telephone and make a reservation or you may well be disappointed. All this for a very reasonable price.

The most disappointing thing about this entire 'memorable' experience is that the management did not take full responsibility for it. The service was so bad we look back and see it as funny. Booked for 8 PM on Saturday 4 April. We arrived 7.50, our table was still occupied so we waited in the bar no drama. Finally got to the table 8.45. Orders were finally taken 9.15ish. First order arrived 10.10 (for my 10 year old son who had never eaten so quickly) and then filtered through over 10-15 minutes. Two were sent back and one re-appeared around 10.40 so we had a solo eater on our table of 9 finishing around 11. They had their problems in the kitchen, which they acknowledged at the end, but their offer of the last two meals free was insulting. In the end we got 25% of the food bill, actually not much more than two meals free. There is an argument for at least 50% off, you could argue it was simply unacceptable and not worthy of payment but we had to negotiate with the Management eve to get the 25% of the food bill. If we had not have had 3 children in our group we would have walked. Communication along the way was poor. If they had told us earlier of the problems we could have made a decision to go elsewhere. We are disappointed for our relatives who live near-by and booked it. We are disappointed for the pub as a business because the service was simply not acceptable on any level.

It was put on table I a large dish , looked very presentable. My daughter was very impressed and enjoyed it greatly. Unfortunately the vegan table message had not been passed on to the lady that makes the desserts but she manages to provide a spiced Orange dessert that was enjoyed . The Old Black Lion is lovely pub in a nice area. It's recently changed hands and the new owners are very keen on providing very good quality food. You can see this from their menu. They provide meals that are more thoughtful and higher quality than standard pub offerings you'd expect. Their vegetarian menu was very varied and impressive.I came here with my mother and her partner, and as I am an awkward customer, being a vegan- we rang up the night before asking about vegan suitable food. They were very understanding and said it'd be no problem. I was very suprised when we arrived to find the chef had come up with a specific menu board with options for vegans. I opted for the 'winter vegetable risotto' which was beautifully presented, full of mushrooms, sweet potato and parsnip and a generously sized dish.My family had got the beef and my mother had the slow roasted pork, which being a chef herself, thought was perfectly cooked. Thanks for a good meal!

We booked a table for Sunday lunch as our usual pub/restaurant was undergoing refurbishment. On first appearance things didn't look too bad. Although the gentleman serving us had tatoos proudly displayed on both forearms. It may be OK for Popeye, but most of the general public would rather such graffiti be covered up by a long sleeve shirt. The menu was, in my opinion, over elaborate for a local pub serving food. My wife and me made our respective choices and enjoyed a drink whilst waiting for our food to arrive. First impressions were favourable as the food was pleasantly presented. However, the meat was not only tough, but was also reheated, which is fine, so long as it is heated to a safe temperature eg. 82°C. The meat was a bit like Christopher Biggins character in Porridge, lukewarm. The vegetables were undercooked and also lukewarm. The only saving grace being the hot roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings, presumably as they were cooked fresh to order. However, man cannot live on stodge alone. When we complained about the meat etc the member of staff almost didn't believe us, and proceeded to tell us that the meat was locally sourced. So that makes everything OK then? Not! We will not be making a return visit.

We booked for a traditional Sunday lunch, and were informed that there was a choice of two meats every Sunday. Upon arrival we were asked what drinks were required and when the first choice was eliminated as unobtainable, we were shown to our table but because tables were so close it was a struggle to get seated, due to the fact I am a semi-invalid. Upon being shown a menu board, it was clear that the meal was going to be plated up in the kitchen. Not the carvery we had expected. We ordered our meals which was - two meats plus a set selection of vegetables and the chicken also came with the same vegetables. When the food arrived the vegetables were not freshly cooked, as indicated by the waiter and were cold. The two meats were 12hr cooked pork and treacle covered beef. The beef was too tough to eat, the pork, however, was delicious but both were cold. Operating with only one waiter means very slow service. The waiter was pleasant but wearing jeans and a short sleeved shirt, sadly showing tattoos on both arms, not what one expects during Sunday lunch service. Needless to say there will be no return visit.

Sorry. Really wanted to be impressed. Menu looked great. Execution not so great. Was very cold. Waitress had really dirty apron on. I believe she had been working in the kitchen though. Place untidy and afraid the wine was not that good. I am aware they have only been there for a few weeks. It was a friendly welcome though and they did try .

The old black lion has recently re-opened having been shut for several months. Its such a relief to see a decent local back open. The new Landlord Jason is bringing the menu right up to date, something I think this pub has been needing for a long time. Gone is the early morning delivery lorry from the bulk catering wholesaler - it has been replaced by local farmers and smallholders who frequent the pub, turning up with what is fresh and seasonal that day, most veg travelling less than 2 miles. The fresh Game is also supplied by local people who are also customers of the pub so you get a feeling that this is a local pub, supplied by local people, so there seems to be a bit of community spirit about the place. Non game meat is all supplied from local quality butchers and farm shops.I think that bearing in mind the quality and freshness (and low food miles) of the menu ingredients then prices are actually quite low. The menu does have some modern twists that will attract those wanting something a bit different however it maintains a traditional backbone that will appeal to those wanting the old favourites. This saturday just gone we popped in for breakfast which they have just started doing. I thought the £6.45 that we each paid was extremely reasonable when you consider we were eating local sausages that had won gold medal at the Lincolnshire Poacher, locally cured bacon, local eggs, locally made black pudding and home made fresh bread still hot from the oven - the only ingredient that probably wasnt local was the baked beans! The restaurant side isnt overly busy at the moment so I think walk ins would be fine, a lot of people still havent realised the pub is back open - however the quality and choice of menu gives me a gut feeling that this pub is going to take off in a big way. They have a web site that is easily found on google. Worth looking at to see the new menu.Oh and its Batemans beers on tap now!

We went for a meal here, solely based on tripadviser reviews. It was lovely! The welcome was lovely, polite and the service attentive. The food was also fab. Other half had the ribs and he states; without doubt the best ever. I had salmon with a cajun type sauce, which was also truly amazing. All cooked to perfection. Really good value too. As its just down the road we'll be back!

Decided to go for lunch at The Old Black Lion as we have eaten here on several other occasions and again we were not disappointed with the food and beer. All food is prepared on the premises. One of our party had the homemade steak and ale pie which he thoroughly enjoyed. Another of our party had the Gammon which again was delicious. The Chicken Liver Pate was had by another member of our party as main with garlic bread and this also was very good. I opted for the Vegetarian Shepherds Pie which was really tasty and thankfully wasn't a frozen ready meal! We'll be going back for sure in the near future.

We were on our way to Gt Yarmouth and we spotted a sign from the main A17. We bobbed our head down on the way in and were greeted by very pleasant staff/owners.Had we booked? no - ok you can that table for two. Thank you very much.Prompt service followed with drinks brought to the table and meal order taken.Roast Beef, Yorkshire Pudding and Roastys followed by four veg, bowl of mash and big boat of gravy. Then to add to our topped up plates - cauliflower cheese. It's hard to find but make the effort - it's worth it, so much so we called on our way back from Gt Yarmouth the following Tuesday and had Pie and Mash which was equally as good.

Called in on the way to Norfolk, very quiet, but made very welcome. Food was very nice, perhaps a little overpriced, but service was very good from a young and very polite waiter. Worth a visit.

On the recommendation of my brother-in-law we travelled down the A17 to the Old Black Lion. Our pre-booked table was near the main bar but comfortable. Our drinks were bought to the table and the Bombardier was in excellent condition. I ordered rack of ribs on my brother-in-laws recommendation and thankfully so did he. The ladies ordered fillet of lemon sole and scampi respectively. The rack of ribs was excellent with loads of meat dripping in sauce and falling of the bones. The sole was superb too and there were more than the average number of scampi. All complimented by well cooked chips. A nice touch was the finger bowl and an empty dish to put our bones in. The cost was reasonable too and a pleasant evening was had by all.

I wanted to leave a review as my wife and I had such a good meal on Father's Day at the Old Black Lion, really well cooked and presented Beef Wellington. The place although small was exceptionally busy which was a good sign! We were well treated by staff and there were real ales on offer. We were told that the chef was new to the restaurant and were so impressed with the quality of the food that we have booked here for our Christmas dinner!

Recent visit with 3 members of my family. The atmosphere was very good with very attentive staff. Unfortunately, possibly due to the large number of people in the restaurant at the time, the steak I ordered was completely wrong. This was rectified and a good night had. Beer is of Very good quality!

What a hidden gem !!! Never been here before but my son and I went along for lunch and had a fantastic meal . Attentive staff and the waitress that served us paid my son a compliment about his manners which made my day proud dad moment . I had the mega breakfast and it was cooked to perfection with lovely fluffy poached eggs and decent beans (not cheap catering beans ) spot on blank pudding sausage and bacon and crispy hash browns , no grease on the plate to be found , I was really impressed

Nice looking place but service is awful, staff miserable. Waited 20 mins to be served, place not busy, in the end I had to go approach them. Expensive cake was dry and bland, won’t be going back.

Although it states vegetarian friendly the choice is poor. They used to do veggie meals but I was told they was no demand for veggie meals so stopped going. You don't always want panini or prawn jacket spud!!
