We've been here a couple of times before and it's been great, however our latest visit was not a great experience. Portions were small, presentation wasn't anything special, looked like meals I could of in nocked up myself as a quick tea at home, nothing special at all, certainly didn't look like a restaurant dining experience. Also, never come across a restaurant that stipulates on the menu if you want steak they need 48 hours notice! And even if they do, they should tell people when they book in as we had 2 of our party very disappointed on the night. The whole dining experience was also ruined by a group of loud, drunk locals sitting in the dining area and talking and swearing at the top of their voices so we couldn't even hear ourselves having a conversation. If people have paid for a dining experience no matter how bad that was, they should not have to put up with a table full of loud, swearing locals who were just there for the drink, keep the two things separate! Really dark and dingy in the restaurant, we struggled to read the menu due to how badly lit it was. The waitress started the evening by telling us what wasn't available off the menu, which in itself seemed odd at the beginning of the weekend to of already run out of so much. Needless to say this one bad experience overshadows previous good ones, it looks like the place has gone down hill, we won't be back! Must say though this is by no means a reflection of the staff they were lovely, it's on the owners!

Absolutely laden Sunday dinner! Honestly, the best I've had in any establishment and even, dare I say it, home cooked (bar a few exceptions!) The quality is exceptional, the quantity is unequalled & the hosts can't do enough for you...they even offer you more if you can fit it in!! London Pride and XXXB on pump, roaring log burner and plenty of banter from Kate...we'll be back for sure🍻😉👍 Tim & Ally

We visited the Black Horse for the first time for Sunday lunch, which was fantastic! Delicious beautifully cooked food - gorgeous tender beef and pork, crispy roasties and a lovely range of well-cooked veg. Each of the 3 of us tried a different dessert, all of which were delicious. It was very welcoming and cosy and the service was amazing, nothing too much trouble. Thanks for a brilliant experience - we’ll definitely be back!

Rarely have a been out for a meal where every aspect has been absolutely delightful. At this pub: the friendly welcome; the personal service; the beers on offer; the range of food, were all fabulous. We opted for the roast dinner. I am a bit of a fan of the roast dinner, and the one on offer here was magnificent! The meat was tender, the Yorkshire pudding crisp, the range vegetables cooked to perfection, the cheese sauce wonderfull, and the gravy oh so yummy! Unfortunately I live nowhere near the pub, but my friend does, and so next time we meet this will definitely be where we dine again. Indeed, the food was so brilliant it’s worth taking a little detour for in you are in the area!

Happily just as I remember it! I first visited this pub when I lived nearby over 35 years ago. I’m glad to say that it has survived, unlike the Five Bells and Duke of York. It was perfect for Sunday lunch with my wife and her parents today. The welcome was warm, the service was great - e.g. Gluten free was accommodated perfectly by the team, who clearly had empathy, and the food was good and plentiful. I wish we lived closer as this pub has the makings of a good traditional local that I would enjoy visiting regularly. We will anyway be back. We will definitely come hungrier, for space to try the home-made puddings!

The portion sizing will fill even the biggest of appetites. All the food was cooked very well and reminded me of the roast dinners my gran used to make. This was our first visit and certainly will not be our last, we will be back for many more visits in the future. It's great to see what is now our local pub being run so well. We have just had our second meal in The Black Horse in these past few weeks, and we have thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and food both times. The old Inn is very old with lots of character and the feeling of what pubs used to be like. The food is exquisite. We have eaten during a week evening and had a Sunday lunch. The Sunday roast is worth having with plenty of options: beef, chicken, pork, salmon and a veggie option to cover everyone's tastes. We have already booked up to visit again. What a treasure to have this pub so close to Gosberton and Spalding.

Our first and long awaited visit to this village pub, Very quiet on a late afternoon midweek. Nicely decorated restaurant, well laid out. A good choice on menu. The meat platter was presented beautifully just like the picture on Facebook. My wife enjoyed home made steak pie. My platter had great pork pie and ham chine and loads of other fresh elements. We went to the Black Horse Inn for an Anniversary meal out after searching through local places to eat. We were attracted by the menu and some very decent reviews. All I can say is what a fantastic find. A truly fantastic meal out.Seated by the fire we ordered some wine and searched through the menu of wonderful and varied choices of locally sourced produce. For my first course I opted for the Out @sea bouillabaisse, a fine assortment of salmon, cod and big fat king prawns with a confit of garden fennel and fresh dill. Absolutely gorgeous. Great depth of flavour with well cooked fish and succulent prawns. My wife chose the End of summer Goat’s Cheese Bon-bons, Braised Greenhouse Goodies, Sundried Tomatoes, Basil Pesto and alioli. Presented beautifully, it certainly set the evening off to a fine start. Mains were Butcher Lincoln Red 10oz Rib eye Steak. Grilled Tomato, Mushroom, Onion Rings with chunkyFarmers’ Chips for me and Roe venison, Parmentier Potatoes, Salt Baked Celeriac, Mulled Fen Botanic, Neighbours’ Poached Cherry & Thyme Jus for the wife. Again, the presentation on both these dishes was outstanding. The venison was a change to the online duck but so tender and the attention to detail would not be lost in any fine dining establishment. The salt baked celeriac was lovely, soft and tender but still with sufficient bite to appreciate the vegetable. Skilled cooking, just there alone. My steak was very well cooked. Well seared and caramelised but still medium rare as requested. I must mention the onion rings; certainly home made with the lightest of batters. Simply wonderful. Sometimes its the little attention to details that's sets places apart. Take for example the grilled tomato with the steak; cooked through! nicely seared, soft and sweet, a very pleasant change to the often grilled but raw tomato presented in many other restaurants.Desert was an easy choice for me, Puddin’ Pecan Sticky Toffee Pudding, Pecan Brittle, Butterscotch Sauce, Vanilla Ice-cream. Devine, that is all to be said.Wonka Chef’s Chocolate Treats with Citrus & Sugar Surprises! was the wife's choice of dessert. Crikey! what a dessert. As with all the meals, this was fabulously presented and certainly ticked all the boxes wanted from a dessert. No wonder they do not take it from the menu.I appreciate that this post might be long winded but I needed to express my admiration to the chef and the staff at the Black Horse Inn, who in these uncertain times can still present a meal that was that good. The food in my opinion was on par with any 3 rosette restaurant, certainly that I've been to recently. A thoroughly enjoyable evening. Lastly, if you are uncertain of eating out during the Covid pandemic, don't be, they have that covered. Well spaced out, sanitiser on entry, masks worn. Great Job.Looking forward to your French themed dining experience in November.

In new hands for the last couple of years or so, and recently re-opened from lockdown, The Black Horse is resurgent with the energy of younger people pushing for a better pub and dining experience. It's a charming little place in a nice location, and suits the personal service and informal approach very well. They have the sense to keep a smaller but well-chosen and well-kept range of beers, wines and spirits available at the bar. The small bar and restaurant area is backed up with a large, tidy garden with open views across farmland. This is put to good use around Christmas time when a huge, insulated and heated marquee is erected to serve parties and larger groups out celebrating. The food at the moment is amazing - you'd never imagine a quiet rural pub could produce restaurant-quality food like this, but that's exactly what the Black Horse is doing. The menu is varied and extremely responsive to seasonal availability, chef even forages for special ingredients like wild herbs and edible flowers to raise the bar yet further. Typically 4 - 6 starters, mains and desserts will feature on the menu, and that change as soon as newer, fresher produce becomes available. As someone who enjoys variety, I love this - I can dine there two days in a row and be guaranteed something wholly different and excellent each day. Prices are naturally a little more than the usual straight-out-of-a-freezer-bag "pub fayre", but for the quality available you are getting a bargain - even more so if you take advantage of current government subsidies for eating out.My wife and I, and our friends have eaten here dozens of times in the last couple of years, most recently just last night, so this review does take into account that whole sweep of universally excellent experiences.

We have been meaning to visit the black horse for 18 months as it was recommended by friends. They are no longer friends (only joking). The atmosphere in this pub/restaurant was awfully. The staff where not friendly and although the food did not look to bad it was not very hot and the portions sizes where not great. My wife had a medium rump steak that was over cooked and tough. The chips I am sure where frozen not fresh as we would of expected. We found out on leaving that the owners had changed a couple of times from 18 months ago and the current owners have only be here since about May. Therefore most of the good reviews do not reflect on the current owners. This establishment used to be number 1 in the area, it is not now and we can see why. We dropped in on a week night after meeting some friends and deciding we would like something to eat. We were met with a warm welcome and offered a seat whilst our drinks were prepared and brought over and we perused the menu. We were spoilt for choice with the menu and it was obvious that a lot of care and thought had been put into it. After being shown to the table we were served with amuse bouche which was a lovely surprise. This was followed by our main course. 3 of us had steaks all of which were cooked to perfection and to our preferred tastes. I had the Stilton sauce with mine and it was absolutely amazing. The last member of our party had the beef fillet which again was cooked beautifully. We were full after this but could not resist one of the tempting desserts. The parfait turned out to be a hit with the ladies and the unusual plum cheesecake was superb. A complimentary limoncello rounded off the meal - another great touch and point of distinction. The Black Horse is not the cheapest but it is excellent value for money and the service is first class. The finishing touches all add to the experience too. It unashamedly sets a high bar and places itself in a different league to the other pubs and restaurants around and is a refreshing change. We live locally and we are already planning our next visit. Thank you for a great evening. We will see you soon.

She thoroughly enjoyed her meal too! The food was cooked to taste but we were offered a throw away salt cellar just incase. The deserts were divine! I had the Bakewell with black currant ice-cream and my wife had the lemon parfait which she is still going on about now. This could be down to the fact that we were given a liqueur at the end of the meal of which my wife drank both as I was the designated driver. We shall return!

We have not been to the Black horse for a while since the previous owners left, may of even had another set of owners as the current owners have only been in the pub since February 2019.We used to visit the Black Horse as often as we could as the food, service and the ambience of the pub was lovely. We went there on Friday 9th August to celebrate my 60th Birthday with some friends. On arrival we ordered some drinks at the bar and where made very welcome. We sat in the snug and where given the menu, it was the first time we had seen the menu as it is now not available on line. If at this stage we could of walked out we would of, but it was nearly 8pm on a Friday night and we probably would not of found somewhere else to go. The menu is very, very limited, not even one chicken dish. We all found it very hard to find something we liked. We all ended up ordering the rump steak. We all wanted them cooked differently. Once our orders were taken we were shown to our table, the chairs were uncomfortable with loose cushions on them. We were then given a meatball each to start with, not sure why they were not on the menu. When the steaks arrived, mine should of been rare and it was medium to well done, my wife's should of been medium and it was medium rare and not very warm. Our friends steaks where not as requested either. I asked for mine to be changed as I do not like my steak over cooked. Every one else just put up with what they had as they did not want to make a fuss as it was my 60th Birthday. If you are a restaurant and your main dishes are steaks surely the chef needs to know how to cook them correctly. Even my replacement steak was over cooked and I was told it was blue to rare.By the time my replacement steak came out the rest of my party had finished, I also had to carry on eating my fresh steak with cold chips as they had not given me fresh. We asked for salt and mustard. The salt came out in a small egg cup shaped dish, that you had to put your fingers in, not very hygienic and the mustard was in the bottom of a tea cup. I am 95% sure even the chips were frozen and not fresh. All in all not a good experience, we defiantly will not be going back. It used to be a high class establishment with great food and service, now it feels like a Weatherspoon's but not at Weatherspoon's prices. At the end of the meal we were offered a shot of some liquor, but if you are driving you are unable to have this.Birthday meal ruined......

The Black Horse is under new management since our last visit. We booked for Sunday lunch and as a Coeliac who doesn't eat meat I was sceptical. But the staff are absolutely brilliant and so friendly and my dietary requirements were understood and well catered for. Our starters of smoked salmon with melon was light, full of flavour and beautifully delicate. My sea bass, stuffed with almonds, spinach and apricots, was delicious and the other members of our party really enjoyed their roast meats. All served with a selection of vegetables and a cauliflower cheese that I wasn't able to eat - but I had my own dish of broccoli in a delicious buttery sauce.

Great little local, friendly and serves good beers and inexpensive good pub food. The locals are welcoming and very chatty. Really enjoyed our short visit, and will return if/when we are next in the area. Thanks for you hospitality.

This is a fabulous place. Everyone made us feel extremely welcome. Food was exceptional, and you keep your table for the night, no double ups. We cannot wait to return. They have a marquee in the garden, where they are putting on "special evenings " and cannot wait to attend some of these.

12 of us came here for my boyfriend’s 40th. Crystal and the team we’re absolutely outstanding in their welcome and hospitality. They’re a dream team. Nothing was too much trouble, the food was fantastic and they made us all feel very special. They’re a relaxed and smiley friendly bunch who are obviously excelling at what they do. They have weddings coming up and for anybody reading this thinking of having these guys host your party, look no further, you will be in very safe and capable hands! Crystal kept in contact with me leading up to our little party and she was an absolute gem. Thanks so much for having us.

I pine for the old ways. I miss pavement users stopping and standing to attention as a hearse pass’s. I understand that change is indeed life, but that doesn’t make me like it.

Well being a publican myself I can't fault this establishment, and that is unusual as I am fussy , the owners And staff are beyond exemplary and you feel more than welcome to just ask if there's a preference, food is high quality and worthy of a visit

My wife & I went recently for an evening meal to celebrate my birthday. It was Steak Night but Crystal and Chef Jimmy were able to provide my wife with a lovely chicken dish as an alternative as she is not a steak lover. The evening started well as we were shown to some seats in the lounge and our drinks order was served to us. So much nicer to be waited on from the word go.

This used to be a wonderful 5 Star restaurant but unfortunately it was taken over a few weeks ago and the new comers(Sandra & Crystal and family) have a lot to learn. On entering we were welcomed drinks order taken and told to take a seat and drinks and menus would be brought to us, this duly happened, but were then told they had run out of sirloin steaks and one of the specials- lamb steak at 7 pm on a Saturday night and there is still the rest of the holiday weekend to go.Surely it’s not a hardship to go to the butchers in the afternoon and get some more before evening meals begin.

We have been here a number of times over the last few years, and have never been disappointed (although judging by some other comments, we may have been lucky?!) The new owners, however, are especially welcoming, friendly and attentive, and today's Sunday lunch was delicious! There was a really good selection of main courses to choose from - I had the venison pie which was, as the previous reviewer stated, 'great'. Others in our group had the beef, pork and sea bass, all of which were thoroughly enjoyed, and the vegetables were plentiful and well cooked. Only one of us could manage a dessert - the chocolate brownie with white chocolate ice-cream (again, delicious apparently!) Coffee with a lovely selection of petit fours really finished the meal off nicely for us. All this, plus the extra little individual touches and Crystal's (?) obvious enthusiasm and vision for the inn, meant it was well worth our hour or so drive. We will definitely be going again. Thank you!

We tried the black horse again now it has new owners for Friday for birthday lunch. Although quiet the new hosts we great and the food, well back to its previous excellence. The venison pie was great and my good wife just will not shut up about how good the cream brûlée was. Looks like it’s going to be the place to eat once again

Sooo having been scarred by the last owners we braved back to the Black horse for a cheeky evening melee with the our older children. It was immediately pleasing to see that Crystal and team are working hard on improving the internal appearance, Great work keep going on that front.

Really welcoming and excellent service, the food was great and of a good size but a limited menu. The silver service felt a little unecessary for the environment but each to their own if you like that sort of thing.

We went as a group of six , very friendly reception and were allocated a very nice table. Food was well presented but we all felt that presentation was more important to chef than quality. It’s not a MITCHEL in star restaurant so better to concentrate on good quality food not fancy plate decoration. Coffee was almost undrinkable . We ordered b52 cocktails which should arrive in three layers, it arrived a single mud coloured drink. All in all , not an over impressive meal but relatively good value. Staff were very attentive it’s a shame about short comings . Photos show a real b52 and what they served.

What a hidden gem !!! Never been here before but my son and I went along for lunch and had a fantastic meal . Attentive staff and the waitress that served us paid my son a compliment about his manners which made my day proud dad moment . I had the mega breakfast and it was cooked to perfection with lovely fluffy poached eggs and decent beans (not cheap catering beans ) spot on blank pudding sausage and bacon and crispy hash browns , no grease on the plate to be found , I was really impressed

Although it states vegetarian friendly the choice is poor. They used to do veggie meals but I was told they was no demand for veggie meals so stopped going. You don't always want panini or prawn jacket spud!!
