The Old Bell & Crown in Test Valley

We looked on Tripadvisor when travelling nearby and did a quick detour for lunch and are so glad we did! We (humans and a dog!) received a very warm welcome. I had the rainbow trout and I can honestly say it was the nicest meal I’ve had in a long time, my husband also very much enjoyed his steak pie. It made his day when he realised the fruit crumble was rhubarb as that’s always been his absolute fave! If in the area again we would definitely return!

Situated in a nice village, The Old Bell and Crown has proved to be a real find. It is a lovely old building and on our first visit, we were warmly welcomed by the bar staff. The menu is wide and varied and the food is very good and well presentd. We been back since and will return again.

Called in ,didn’t book to reserve a table,no problems,first class greeting.we have been there before and again welcomed,great choices on the menus,the service first class ,would recommend it to anyone.its not too far to travel to and will be looking forward to going there again Thank you for great meal out and will see you soon Bill and Jen 👍👍

We have just celebrated our wedding at the beautiful Old Bell and Crown. We cannot thank the staff enough for the wonderful day we had. The service was impeccable and the food was outstanding. From organising the day to setting up the marquee, Lyndsay and her team went above and beyond to ensure our day was perfect. All of our guests commented on how delicious the food was and how attentive the staff were. We cannot thank them enough. We will certainly be back and I would recommend the pub for any special occasions!

This is a great location to meet family & friends. The menu was varied (we had a gluten free and a veggie among us) with lots of choice. The portions were generous too. The staff were very welcoming and we got to meet Bert the dog. Just an old round lovely place, we were very happy. Also plenty of parking and easy to find.

First time at this pub and had a really nice lunch. The pub has a lovely old charm to it being nestled in a small hamlet with low beamed ceilings and open fires. The staff were really friendly and welcoming. There was plenty of choice on the menu plus a nice number of varied specials. I had the pork belly which was cooked perfectly , lots of cracking and a great cider sauce to go with the mustard mash. All finished off with crumble and custard. The pub was getting ready for xmas so the festive lights added even more charm . I can imagine the evenings here would be great fun especially with live music . Thanks for a lovely time and looking forward to another visit when in the area .

We had our dad’s wake here yesterday as just a very intimate funeral, the pub it self is so quaint, Lindsey and her staff were super friendly and couldn’t do enough for us, we were made to feel so welcome. Food was really good and big portions, was very surprised when we paid our bill at the end which was so reasonable, a lot less than I thought it would be. Thanks for helping us to make dad’s send off so lovely.

Well new came here for the Sunday roast and left with disappointment The ambience is authentic and nice. When we came in, obviously the first time here, it took us three persons to direct us to where to maybe find a seat, first one said, go to the bar, then behind that bar, that person said, go to the main bar. Anyhow, at the main bar, they told us we were lucky they could find a table for us (I am unsure I was lucky or not…) The kids went for breaded chicken goujons and wild mushroom tagliatelle. The chicken was so hard that you could, kill a chicken with it. Mash was OK. On one middle piece he tried to eat was a bone, he did go out and throw up. All well. The tagliatelle was acceptable. I went for the British sirloin of beef, it should be with cheese cauliflower, I said I cannot eat cheese and they said, ok we take away the cauliflower. No offer of anything else, maybe a spoon of pees or something? The roast was dry and very chewy, even if served in rich gravy. The deep fried potatoes was good. Yorkshire pudding was all right. The lemonades for the kids was good. My beer was Fabulous. So in summary: Great drinks. Mediocre service. Bad food. Pretty house with nice decoration. Will we be back? No, we will not.

Absolutely outstanding went for Sunday lunch the food excellent with amazing service the credit to linsey and Ade for our wonderful experience we will be back without a doubt, best Sunday lunch in the area .. The staff cannot do another highly recommend 10/10 Our thanks again

Firstly I would like to say that we’ve had some truly fantastic meals in this pub. However, went there a couple of months ago and our meals were mediocre at best. Went for Sunday lunch and it was truly awful. I know beef should be pink. But it shouldn’t be raw and difficult to cut. Very fatty also (raw fat). Yorkshire pudding was incinerated. Cabbage and carrot….. yes carrot overcooked. I could go on. Too much to list really. We should have kicked off but decided we are finished with this pub now. No apology, understanding or anything? I think the original chef has left. If this is the case it would explain many things. Up to you. Pay your money and take a chance. I’ll not spend any more money there.

Met an old work colleague for lunch. At booking they were very open that there was a wake booked. Nice old building with plenty of parking. Lovely old fashioned feeling. Really friendly welcome and great service throughout. Burger certainly seemed home prepared and chunky chips were fabulous. My friend was tempted by the other options (really big menu for lunch) but was swayed by the chunky chips coming out so went for fish. Plenty of food, portion size. With a pint of 6X what more would you want from a lunch?

Thank you to the staff at this pub, they did an amazing job on such a busy day (Mother’s Day) no long delays, cheerful and efficient, reacted well to tricky questions form the vegans in our party! Food was very good, portions large. Atmosphere great. It was a shame the vegans didn’t have anything to choose from on Mother’s Day menu compared to online menu, but were able to get some ravioli instead. I had Thai chicken curry which was nice (and v generous in size, good meat) though a bit bland, but the others enjoyed their roasts v much. We would come back, definitely.

Had Sunday lunch with family. Must book! Was very busy and had to wait a while for our food but good drinks menu. Friendly service. Great roasts and desserts. Would recommend but be prepared to wait and relax.

Nine friends went for lunch yesterday and we all had the most delicious food! Service was really good. Plenty of choices for us. Lovely atmosphere in the Pub and it was very busy, so staff working hard. Would recommend.

We booked for a meal at 7pm on a Friday evening. We arrived and as we were being seated were told there was no soufflé, no sea bass, and no fish and chips. We sat and looked at menu and the waitress came back to take our order. My other half ordered the steak only to be told they’d just sold the last one at 7pm on a Friday night! We left without ordering anything, and had a lovely meal at The Hatchet in Chute where steak was not only available but £5 cheaper!

Lovely lady behind the bar very welcoming had a good drink with her husband. Unfortunately the area by the main bar smell like Jeffery Dahmer has been here. Great food 10/10

This is such a beautiful place, with twinkling lights and roaring fires. Staff were friendly and helpful, food good. What more could you want?

As a food critic, I have to say that the steak at this pub was one of the better ones I've had, although I was disappointed to receive a medium steak instead of the medium rare one that I had requested. The chicken was also quite good. The pub itself had a traditional look and was located in a remote area. However, there were a couple of other issues with my experience. The onion rings were quite greasy, although the batter seemed fresh. Additionally, when we arrived it wasn't particularly busy and the few patrons that were there were quite loud, making it difficult for us to hear each other at times while ordering food. This was early in the evening, so it's possible that the atmosphere picks up later on. Overall, this pub offers excellent steak and chicken, but the incorrect preparation of my steak, greasy onion rings, and noisy early evening atmosphere were a bit of a disappointment.
