I've been going to this place for a few years and the coffee shop used to be lovely after a browse in the second hand clothes shop. Unfortunately the coffee shop has now closed but the second hand shop remains open. I am having a spring clean a nd found two pairs of shoes and two dresses from Monsoon I have never worn and were quite expensive so thought I would try and sell them there. I was made to wait whilst the very snooty up her own backside woman finished writing. When she deigned to look up she took one look at me, hardly looked at my shoes and dresses and said 'oh no definitely not'. I had just come back from a dog walk so she probably thought I wasn't posh enough to shop at her second hand clothes shop. I will never go there again and neither will my friends who used to use it regularly. That woman needs to learn some manners I was absolutely appalled.

Oh dear. Great cakes, awful staff. Waitress constantly ignores customers whilst carrying on in the kitchen, on the phone, making drinks, chatting to “the boss”. It makes for an awkward experience. They’ve also pushed prices up and reduced the size of servings. Food served in takeaway cups which is at odds with the presentation of a pretty tea shop. Odd place.

Stopped for a cream tea over Easter weekend. Beautiful cakes on display. Disappointed to be served tea in paper cups and a cream tea on paper plates with plastic cutlery. The scone has clearly been microwaved and was inedible in the middle. Really disheartened to see paper plates and cups being used when the milk is served in a fine bone jug. Serious improvement needed.

Looked lovely through the window. Beautiful teapots and cake stands. So so disappointing when given cardboard cups and paper plates and microwaved scones with hardly enough jam. Not offered sugar for drinks, had to find it myself. One to avoid!

Very disappointed. It all looked so appealing - pretty tables and chairs, beautiful looking cakes but when our coffee and slice of cake arrived it was served in takeaway cups and plates!! We didn't want a takeaway, we wanted proper china! Not impressed.

Having driven around the local area we decided to stop by and enjoy a real Devon cream tea. All I can say is disappointing! Firstly everything was served in paper plates and paper cups, if I'd wanted a tea from a paper cup I'd have gone to McDonald's (not that there is one nearby). No selection of teas offered. The scone was reasonable, nothing special equal to a supermarket own brand. The clotted cream and jam was lovely. It would appear that unless your local service is minimal. Overall quite a disappointing experience, and to top it off we were asked to clear our table, never have I been somewhere like this and been asked to clear my table. It's a shame, it could be so much better

I visited this beautiful takeaway and shop last week, the cakes were incredible and the owner explained they were all homemade by a local lady, which made it even better! I & my Friend often use this venue for morning coffee or light lunch we understand the owners have had to adapt to the COVID-19 restrictions and in all fairness the cakes on display looked : Very Colourful: but not homemade! It was about 12.30 we wanted either a sandwich or a filled roll - sorry was the answer we’ve sold out , just a filled roll left -Oh Dear how disappointing there was no mention or effort to make anymore - we went across the street to the cooperative store and bought two lovely sandwiches and found a bench to sit on and enjoyed our picnic

The place and cakes look fabulous, and the town is lovely. We visited twice, the wait time was long on both occasions and sadly I can’t say they were particularly welcoming or friendly… they do work at an excessively leisurely pace. There was only me and my friend in there at the time.. Milkshakes were lovely though, and they made these close to their closing time so we were grateful, they then had a few more customers so I guess it worked out well for them to stay open a little later than 4pm. The cakes looked amazing, really amazing! So we popped back 4 days later, and many of the cakes looked as though they were the same batches.. which is fine I guess but some we’re half used on our first visit so I did wonder how long they’d been there in total. Nevertheless, I tried to pick a few bits that I didn’t recognise as being there on the first visit to bring back for family .. Hummingbird Cake was delicious.. but a real shame on looking in the bag en route back home the same morning - the danish apple cake they had given me had mould down one edge. Really disappointing. 1 less gift, waste of money… I am a big fan of smaller independent cafes and restaurants and the place really looks the part but needs some attention to detail.

A friend and I drove to Modbury from Plymouth for a coffee. We found the Old Bakery which is part 2nd hand clothes as well which was interesting. The bakery was very nice with wonderful cakes on view but the lady behind the counter had a real chip on her shoulder. We were very polite but still she was abrupt certainly couldn't get a smile out of her. You would think in these strained times she would be happy to have customers spend money and we certainly did that. 2 coffees and a brownie £9. We felt quite uncomfortable in there and were glad to leave. Before which we asked if there was a toilet on the premises, the answer was NO but she did qualify the retort with telling us to go to a public loo further up the road. It was lovely to visit Modbury for the first time but the lady of the Old Bakery rather let the town down. Like a previous respondent we won't return to this establishment.

Having visited The Old Bakery several times when it was a coffee shop, I was so happy to see the alterations that have been made to turn it into a fantastic busy take away. I would recommend the delicious, outstanding cakes which are presented in lovely packaging and for a savoury bite the pasties are very traditional and must not be resisted. The owners have worked extremely hard in these trying times to enable us holiday makers to have a special take away treat. They are also very helpful in directing you to places of interest.

There is no sign across the front of the wide shop unit. Two thirds of the front inside are given over to a tea shop. Behind the counter hangs a sign 'The Old Bakery' which may once have been a self contained food shop here. There is a sign referring to 'The Top' on the glass of the front door and the right side of the interior which also goes back some distance is a used, predominantly women's clothes, shoes and accessories. When we visited on youngish well spoken woman was trying hard to tend to both cafe customers and clothes browsers.it may have been an unexpectedly busy drizzly February morning. They ought to have more staff it is always like this. They ought also to decide what name the combined enterprise should have so as not to confuse customers like me just passing through.A reasonable cup of tea and a chunk of chocolate brownie were both good and together cost me just under a fiver. There were a few (Hello type) magazines but no newspapers or any sign of WiFi but to be fair I didn't enquire. The general ambience is relaxed, perhaps a little faux genteel but no harm there.I have written a shorter review on the parallel Top of the Steps listing here on Modbury Tripadvisor but I think TA ought either to combine the two threads or move the second hand clothes bit to 'Shopping'.

Lovely looking small cafe just right for a quick coffee on our shopping trip around Modbury. Managed to find seating for our group of nine and then placed our order at the counter thinking we'd make life easier. Had a rather odd comment that we had 'spread ourselves about'. Seeing that most tables seated two it was really the only option. After placing the drinks order some of us took the opportunity to take a look around the shop whilst waiting. Slowly but surely the drinks arrived but they weren't exactly piping hot. We would have mentioned it but the young lady serving was too busy chatting with a colleague about another customer who comes in. Sadly the general feeling was luke warm drinks and luke warm service.

We visited this lovely tea shop today and we're impressed by the ambiance. As we sat admiring the gorgeous china and whilst placing our order we were asked whether we were on holiday. Explaining that we were from Plymouth we made our choices and we're delighted with the food when it arrived. There was one other table occupied, as it transpired by a German family. They too we're asked if they were on holiday. Lucky strike, yes they were! Where else had they been? Plymouth? Ah you didn't like it? The waitress then went on to say that she didn't much rate it either as 'most of the decent stuff had been bombed during the war".... How to offend both sets of customers in one sentence! We all paid our bills and quickly left! For info Plymouth offers a wide range of historical attractions, charm and culture. The gentleman you were talking to was clearly interested in architecture "How about Saltram House" I was willing you to say but no you suggested a National Trust garden near Salbombe. Though it was slightly better than suggesting the 'fake Plymouth' over near Wembury built to confuse the Germans in WWII I guess!

Five stars for service at this lovely cafe in Modbury. The owners and staff could not have been more welcoming nor solicitous during our recent week long holiday in the area. We visited four times that week, and had excellent coffee and good cakes each time. Lunches are also available. They were family friendly and obviously had a good local following too, judging by the welcomes to each new person who came through the door. Please note that this is the new premises for Top o' The Steps (also reviewed for Modbury) - the owners moved to these new, more accessible premises on Broad Street late 2013/early 2014.

Awesome. Don’t judge a book by its cover. I arrived late evening for work over a couple of days. The staff couldn’t have been more welcoming and helpful from getting me a taxi late evening at the train station to helping me get to my work venue in the morning. I had arrived past restaurant hours but the staff were more than happy to prepare food if I had wanted. I was also given a local delicacy from a local. I’m normally a poor sleeper but slept so well. Whilst the rooms at first appearance look a little dated the bed is so so comfy. The room also spotlessly clean. The question is - what’s more important to you - a great nights sleep or a sterile environment with mod cons? Sadly the first morning I didn’t have chance to sample the breakfast- I didn’t have time to wait. They have a sign saying ‘We don’t serve fast food. We serve fresh food as fast as we can”. Suffice to say I ordered my breakfast for the following morning before I went to bed so it was ready for me when I needed it. Now for the highlight DINNER. I eat a lot and this is definitely one of the best meals I had in a long time. Not the usual processed pub food. The main(stuffed chicken with root veg and dauphinois potatoes was delicious. I never order dessert but felt I had to - the main was so good. The sticky toffee pudding did not disappoint. Overall a really great stay. Thanks so much

Strange but quaint place to get to. Be prepared for a staircase, a handrail on both sides, and you'll need it to, to climb upstairs. Once upstairs, we were approached by a smiling member of staff, who said, "Sit where you like." The floor slopes, but once seated, it seems you forget. We all had Devon cream & jam scone with a cup of coffee each. Wow, the scone freshly made earlier, was warm. It just melted in your mouth. Once you got the jam & cream on, or is it cream & jam. My aunt & I had a latte & my husband & uncle had a cappuccino. Stand carefully for the loo, you may fall. There is only one unisex toilet. We paid and left. Back down the staircase again....the restaurant is above a shop, which is situated by the museum. Not for disabled people..though I made it with my walking stick. No car parking.

I then spent nearly 2 months calling, emailing, leaving voicemails to get my money back - they ignored every one. In the end I had to claim the money back via my bank. If my bank hadnt stepped in and help, this establishment would have stolen over £400 from me. I am writing to hopefully sway others and stop them doing the same to others
