The service was very poor. We waited over an hour for our mains whilst they all rushed around despite the restaurant not being busy. The servers were inattentive to the point they charged us extra for food we didn’t order; asked if we could see the pudding menu but never came back over to take our order. Despite all this the food was good.

We stayed for a quick getaway and loved it, we had a friendly welcome at check in, the room was clean and cosy. This is a very dog friendly place, with a doggy menu. The food was lovely and the service was top notch, one guy even offered to carry our drinks to the beer garden while he was outside before his shift started. Perfect location to explore the surrounding area and a fantastic walk to dovedale right on the doorstep. Perfect!! Thank you for a lovely stay ❤️ 🐾

Great location, amazing food. Me and my best mate had an overnight stay, 3 course meal and breakfast in the morning. Great location for exploring the area for walks, villages and Alton Towers. We checked in and we had a room facing a field of sheep at the front which was lovely. Our room was cosy and had a highland cow theme, bed was really comfy. The usual tea and coffee making facilities, ensuite bathroom, TV. We had a tree course meal in the evening each and each dish was full of flavour. The atmosphere for a Friday evening was busy but calm, really nice vibe. The warm white lighting and the decor with the painted map of the area on the wall added to the feel. The staff were friendly and attentive. Our breakfast the next morning was spot on. We both went for the full English, tea and orange juice.

Couldn’t fit us in for food until 8:30pm so obviously a very popular place. They allow stopovers in campervans/motorhomes (4/5 allowed so phone in advance) as long as you eat in the pub. Food was amazing and really good portion sizes too. Staff were very attentive too. It’s a dog friendly place and they also have a good size beer garden. They do breakfasts too. Did a lovely walk along the River Dove up to Thorpe Cloud and the stepping stones the following morning. Many thanks to all of the staff, not forgetting the chefs and kitchen staff too 👍

Fantastic Family Meal at The Oakover Arms! We had a brilliant family meal tonight at The Oakover Arms, and we couldn’t be happier with the experience! The Indian dishes were absolutely delicious—full of rich flavors, perfectly cooked, and beautifully presented. The service was top-notch, with friendly and attentive staff making sure everything was just right. On top of that, the prices were very reasonable for the quality of food and service we received. Highly recommend The Oakover Arms for anyone looking for a great meal in a welcoming atmosphere. We’ll definitely be back!

We are local and were aware that the pub had been taken over. It is quite dark and cold. I had an Indian grill which for me lacked the charcoal taste and it did go cold very fast. My wife had the pie which was OK. We took some cake home to gave with a cuppa tea, very dry not good at all. Over all food was ok, room was cold and its over priced.

Sunday Roast was fabulous. Couldn't choose what meat we wanted so opted for two (beef & pork). We got 3 generous thick slices of each, accompanied by mash, real roasties, roast carots and parsnips, gravy and a fresh large yorky. The veg was a shared bowl and we ordered 3 sides which was £10 extra but we wanted collie cheese but added stuffing and pigs n blankets for good measure. It was all delicious!! More pricey than your average spend but sometimes it's worth splashing out for quality.

Recommended to stop in for food after walking in the area. Didn’t seem to have anywhere near enough staff on, and as a result we ordered drinks and had the menu explained to us, but sat waiting for a crazy amount of time to actually order any food. Eventually we just paid for the drinks and left, I don’t personally feel like it’s up to the customers to chase the staff to persuade them to let us spend our money. A group came in after us and were loud and demanding which I appreciate doesn’t help, but just because you’re a table of two who aren’t causing a fuss doesn’t mean you should be marginalised. Really disappointing considering all of the good reviews.

The location is great as long as you are happy to walk out, it took it around 30 mins over fields to get in to Ashbourne, we were giving a very detailed map from the hotel and it was easy to follow. On the way home we came the road way which is much flatter. The hotel itself was fabulous, your dogs are treated like royalty and the staff were all really great, very knowledgeable about the menu and local area. The butter chicken is the nicest I have ever tasted and the breakfasts are freshly cooked with local quality foods. The rooms are comfy and quiet. We will return.

The two guys running/serving at the pub were fantastic, real gents, friendly, helpful and welcoming. The space was nice and cosy, spotlessly clean, not too cluttered. Good selection of whisky, great pint of Guinness and although we didn’t have anything to eat the menu looked good, the roof looked great and the comments from the dinning customers were all very positive. Curry night on a Tuesday looked especially inviting. We’ll be back. ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏼✊✊🏻

It's a nice village pub with two wood burning stoves, flagstone floor, local beers, hearty food, dog friendly, child friendly. In other words like many other pubs in the Peak District. The big surprise is the menu. As well as the pub classics (cottage pie, fish & chips etc) there is a very extensive range of specialist Indian dishes. And it's not the standard Indian take-away menu. These are unique dishes carefully created by a chef who is enthusiatic about his family's home cooking. We had Adjwain Fish Curry, Aubergine & Fenugreek Masala, Tarka Daal and Jeera Rice. All perfectly cooked and beautifully spiced. This is high quality big city curry in a remote rural village.

After walking for over an hour in the driving rain with our two dogs, the sight of this pub was very welcome, even more so when we saw the sign outside saying “muddy boots and dirty paws welcome” ….which certainly described us. We were made to feel more than welcome with somewhere to hang out wet dog coats and offered a dog bed next to our table, although our Labrador preferred the fireside…. The food was fantastic, service was timely and a very pleasant experience was had by us all. Special shout out to the fish gouchons and pork belly bite starters - very yummy. After pleasantly chatting to the owner about dogs/food/drink/xmas etc we mentioned we had to make a move before dark as we were a little concerned that our arthritic 9yo Labrador may struggle a bit after slipping on the ice earlier in the day so we started to get ready to go. Once our Labrador got up from the fireside limping heavily the owner only offered to drive us back to our cabin in her 4x4. Which we happily accepted and were very relieved to get Rosie home. I still can’t quite believe how hospitable, friendly and kind we found the owner and staff of this establishment. It gives me great pleasure in recommending them and also restores my faith that such nice caring people do still exist. Thank you so much, Graham, Elise, Rosie and Tanna. x

Stopped here whilst on a van journey across the UK. We picked this place largely in hopes of staying the night in the carpark and the staff were very welcome and happy for us to do this. We also picked this pub in particular as we saw there was Indian style cuisine on the menu and what we had was delicious. The Indian fish and chips were lovely, as was the chicken tikka masala. As soon as we entered the pub, the staff were lovely. Matt (I think was his name!) greeted us, kept the drinks flowing, had great recommendations and was easy to chat with. To summarise, anything we needed was provided, and we were left very happy. As a bonus, we didn't know they opened for breakfast, so had a great breakfast meal before heading south on our journey. I would drive through this way again just for the pub, so thanks very much!

Ramblers Unwelcome! Over the last decade I have called at the Okeover Arms 3 or 4 times when walking and always been told that, as long as we bought drinks, we were welcome to eat our sandwiches in the beer garden. However on a recent visit, with a party of 17 thirsty Ramblers we were told No, only food prepared on the premises could be eaten in the (completely empty) beer garden. And where, in hospitable Derbyshire, did they recruit such unsympathetic staff?

Unfortunately we had somewhat of an average / poor experience here, we booked on a weekday evening for 7:15pm, and when we arrived there was no one at the bar to greet us. We stood for a little while and eventually a member of staff came over and took us to our seats. For some reason the bar is very well lit, whilst the restaurant is not? We were a party of 4, sat on a table for 6 and there was very little lighting, just one small lamp in the middle. I have good eyesight but even I was struggling to read my menu! The seating is quite uncomfortable (hard wooden chairs), and the tables too high in comparison to the chairs - not really what you want when you just want to sit and relax with a meal and some drinks. Our orders weren’t taken for about 10/15 minutes, and the food took FOREVER to arrive. Bearing in mind I think there was maybe one other table of two and us in the restaurant (there were a few more seated in the bar), we didn’t get our mains until 8:15, a whole hour after we’d been seated. On the menu I noticed that it says to please be patient as all the food is cooked fresh, which I understand but I feel considering the restaurant was almost empty that this is far too long to wait? My main was very average and lacking in flavour, chips underdone and definitely not worth the wait. The staff were pleasant, but we weren’t asked how our mains were until we were nearly finished. We also weren’t asked if we wanted more drinks, and a couple of times had to go up to the bar to order these ourselves. Sadly for that reason we chose not to have dessert, had it not been for the wait for our mains we probably would have done - but we would have likely been there until 10pm!

The two lads behind the bar and owner/manager was lovely and attentive but seems like there is to many covers to what the kitchen can handle. The place was very busy, its such shame because maybe less is more . Roast dinners were nice, but the kids chips were very hard and the burger wasn't great. This is a very popular pub restaurant that specialises in Indian cuisine. Whilst the usual British pub food is available, it is the quality of the Indian meals that stand out. Having travelled to India many times the food here is undoubtedly of a quality and range that comes much closer to the genuine thing, rather than the usual British version found in most UK based Indian restaurants. Benefitting from very hands on and friendly management the results speak for themselves. Very highly recommended.

The only negative was the service, staff were overrun resulting in a 30 min wait for our order to be taken. We rented a cottage near the Okeover Arms and went for a drink and a meal with friends. The pub and restaurant was delightful and tastefully decorated. It's very doggy friendly too, but is immaculately clean and tidy. They have a great range of draught beers and wine. And the meals were fantastic. They do some Indian dishes and classic European meals too. We all had curry, which didn't disappoint. Well done Okeover Arms. We'll certainly be back.

Great place with good food and dog friendly too. We have been many times before. We went yesterday to find the side seats have all been taken out and more dinning table crammed in. Not so comfortable if you have gone for a drink and looking for a nice soft chair to relax in.

Thin narrow bar & restaurant. Looked really good for dogs, but alas, there was no room at the Inn since every wooden table was taken, and we would have felt awkward stood there with nowhere to sit, especially with our own dog that we had with us.

Brilliant place to eat and stay at, the staff were lovely and the food was delicious! I travel all over the uk on hiking trips and always try out local pubs to put money back into the pockets of the local people, I must say this was one of the best pubs I’ve been to in a while. Will definitely be returning when back in the Peak District 👏🏼👏🏼

Boxing Day teatime, disappointing menu either Lamb Curry on the Specials menu or a Brunch menu for 5pm. Difficult choice, didn,t want a breakfast type meal at 5pm or a curry. Didn,t enjoy the meal, thought I,d picked the best out of what was on offer, but made myself eat it. Shame for Boxing Day. Then saw other people eating from a menu we were not told about we could have had. Lovely pub and setting. Live in Ashbourne usually go The Old Dog but had a change.

Only thing we were upset about is we did not find this place sooner. Ps crazlely dog friendly 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾💜 with the most amazing walks in your door step. And breakfast to die for ❤️

Popped in for lunch. Nice place, big fire, warm and friendly. Host was particularly welcoming and went out of her way to look after us and our sausage dog pup Millie, despite her yapping. Most dog friendly pub we've ever been in. Food was excellent too. Fully recommend.

Absolutely lovely food. The waitresses were all excellent, very friendly and attentive. The decor, lighting, candles were lovely. It was very romantic, with everyone there talking quietly with no raised voices, making it a really nice night out. Highly recommended !
