Lovely country pub needs looking after

Been going to this pub for a few years now and the food is alway constant. It's quality pub food but the Sunday roasts are the best, sirlion of beef slightly pink n delicious. Puds are good if your that way inclined too. With staffing changes in recent times, the front of house can be a bit hit n miss with some clearly not capable of being hospitable and the back dining room area is in bad need of refurbishment. Lovely views however from the garden overlooking the fields and the distant Peak District.

My wife and I came across this pub by accident after taking a wrong turn whilst visiting a few local villages and decided to go in simply to have a drink. What a little gem this place is. We were made to feel very welcome by the lady who served us drinks. Whilst we did not order any food we did observe lots of meals being brought out of the kitchen all of which looked very nice indeed. We had a look at the menu and it looked very extensive and the prices seemed quite reasonable. As we do not live in the area it is hard to say if we will ever go back but after our very pleasant experience I may look to visit again whenever the opportunity arises. Highly recommended.

Good food and great atmosphere. Staff very good and service excellent. It was really nice to visit a traditional good old fashioned pub with amazing antique furniture and a fantastic view of the country side.

Nice surroundings however the pastry on the beef and ale pie was cremated.. The filling ok..

My partner and I stopped off here for lunch today with our dog after having read good reviews. It was good to see lots of locals having meals, normally a good sign. We chose to sit outside under an umbrella as there was a pleasant breeze, despite the heat of the day. I decided on the seafood linguine and my partner chose the pan fried sea bass. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals, I was particularly impressed with the amount of salmon, scallops and king prawns within the dish and the sauce had a lovely spicy flavour, something different from your average pub grub. Having enjoyed both our meals my partner indulged in a honeycomb cheesecake with clotted cream, a very tasty and well presented dessert. Staff were welcoming and pleasant, overall a good choice of pub whilst visiting in the area.

Really efficient friendly service, good home-cooked food and great value for money. We dropped in for z mid-week meal and had a really pleasant evening.

We called in with our campervan and 3 noisy dogs for a quick early meal after visiting The Old Manor (National Trust) in Norbury. What a delight: really accommodating friendly staff who brought our vegetarian meals out to us in the van. Food was excellent. Would definitely call in there again. It is dog-friendly (but our dogs aren’t pub friendly). Lovely old pub with large car park and lovely views over the countryside - the chimneys are interesting.

Always good to visit the Shire Horse. Staff really look after us well and the food menu is very good too. Great to sit in the garden on a summers evening and look out over the surrounding countryside. Definitely recommend a visit if you are in the area. Make sure you note the opening times mind as not open all day.

Visited The shire horse whilst staying in the area. Restaurant was busy. Staff very pleasant. Food was beautiful. Only down side was the restaurant was cold. A pet hate of mine, I hate being cold when having a meal. The radiators were off and the fire wasn’t on. It was 0.5 degrees outside and nearly everyone was sat with coats on. But overall was worth it for the gorgeous food.

Poor food, poor drink, unwelcome

A nice place but it turns out it hosts people who hunt illegally and for that reason I cannot in all conscience go there.

Lovely food at acceptable prices. Would have liked to see more vegetarian options other than the solitary nut roast. On request I was offered and accepted the seafood linguini without the seafood. Too many chocolate/sticky toffee/caramel desserts. Trifle/apple pie/crumble/bread and butter pudding/ peach Melba/Knickerbocker glory would have been tempting options.

Proper country pub, with country people, doing country things and then enjoying a country beer afterwards.

First time visit this evening and we had a lovely time. Food was great and all the staff were lovely and looked after us really well. Would definitely recommend if in the area. We'll have to come back for Sunday roast which we hear is rather good 😋😋 Thanks again for a super first visit. Well we've been back a few times now, most recently for a great Sunday lunch with the family. Still a 5 star experience and can't wait to be back!!

We had our Sunday lunch at the Shire Horse that was just amazing, then we decided to go tonight for the steak night and I must say both Sundays experience and tonight's were both excellent. Food cooked to perfection along with some of the most friendly staff and customers that we have come across in our travels, Excellent service and value for for money , thank you

The Shire Horse was a half way point to meet up with friends for lunch, having searched on line for a suitable venue. I wish it were nearer home because I would be glad to go again. The menu gave plenty of choice and my chicken breast in white wine sauce served with dauphinoise potatoes was very good and my friends enjoyed their free range venison. The young woman who greeted and served us was welcoming and helpful. It was lovely relaxed occasion Perhaps it was not surprising that at lunchtime on Monday there were barely a handful of customers and it would be a shame if that meant they have to reduce their hours.

Always excellent when we visit the Shire Horse and last night with our friends was no exception. Well looked after by the girls and the menu is varied and interesting and the quality of the food is absolutely spot on. We really do recommend a visit and it's become one of favourites. Lovely atmosphere in a traditional locals pub and restaurant. Best venison dish with cream and mushroomd/wine, I've ever tastes. House Red Rioja very smooth and tasty too.

We stopped for Sunday lunch at this lovely pub after visiting the local plant nursery & we all enjoyed our food. All of us had roast lamb & the meat was tasty & tender. The accompanying veg was also cooked correctly too. My meal was washed down with a nice pint of Hartington IPA & my mother enjoyed her red wine. We didn't have desserts, But will do next time. The staff were accommodating to our needs & polite. Certainly recommend a visit to this pub & area in general.

Not back to it's best post pandemic but getting there .

Very disappointing. Slow service, no one came to table to ask if meal was ok. Had to keep asking for service, staff lacked hospitality skills. Steaks were cold and chewy...the dog had most of them. Chips were meant to be twice cooked but were nothing more than frozen chips. Will not be returning.

Great local pub! Lovely food off a varied menu. Extensive selection of beers and spirits, especially gins. Nice sized restaurant / function area. Plenty of room outside for kids and drinking / eating.

We visited on a weekday evening during the May half term as we were on holiday in the area. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was delicious and worth every penny. Myself and our 11 year old daughter (there is a children’s menu) had the burger. My husband had the pie of the day. All the food was piping hot and presented well.

We have visited The Shirehorse over the years, always returning for the fantastic Sunday lunches and food throughout the week. It makes us really sad how badly the building and garden are unkept. It costs nothing to fix guttering or take down the dead hanging baskets. It really feels like the owner can’t care less. The guttering at the front has been hanging down for over a year, the garage that fronts the beer garden and main road is so broken they’ve leant a beer garden bench against it to keep it shut. The car park also features an old broken digger which is dropping to bits and mustn’t have moved for over 5 years. It’s truly a shame as it’s a fantastic location with a breathtaking views from the beer garden, it just needs some essential upkeep! I almost wish I could purchase myself as it would be a goldmine with the right alterations. We are preying it gets the attention it deserves.

Had first Sunday lunch today - absolutely delicious and so much food 😋 We had the roast beef and one veggie option and both were amazingly delicious. Will definitely be doing this as a regular and at 10 pounds to support a local business and save us cooking but getting quality nutritious food its a wonderful idea . Many Thanks Shire Horse Team

Unwelcoming reception on a Saturday evening. Overpriced, prepackaged microwave food which was not Fresh nor homemade as described. Pub must have changed hands recently because this is not what we remembered from our experience last time. Avoid!!!!

Had a Sunday lunch Covid takeaway.... !!!!!!! ordered by phone and given a time slot,collected by car and used chip n pin.Food portion was fantastic and piping hot (did not need to heat up when got home) had a pudding for a treat and we had the main meal left overs for dinner next day( cant be bad).The whole of the outside has had a revamp and the staff are very polite and Covid aware when you collect.Fare play and credit for keeping the business going through these hard times.

Myself, husband and son have visited this place since we moved here two years ago and love this place. The food is always good and well presented. The staff are well chosen and lovely. The atmosphere is oldy worldly and we love it. The owner is always watching out to ensure everyone is happy and being well served. We visited it last night for the first time since Covid 19 struck and the meal we had was delicious. I would recommend this place.

Just had takeaway fish and chips due to Corona. On time for collection. Very tasty food and well worth it. Will definitely be going again.

The staff cannot do enough for you brilliant also the menu is good and the food is freshly prepared really tasty and the beer isn't bad either

Shocking food out dated and dry , starter was okay, stay away from the roast dinner, microwaved roasts, but beer was good

Thank you to the chefs for a lovely meal today and to our waitress who served all 12 of us efficiently and with a smile. The food was very good, as usual, 11 of us enjoyed food from the Christmas menu and one the nut roast from the a la carte menu. The only reason anything was left on the plates was because the portions were very generous.

Lovely village style pub out ‘in the sticks’ so to speak. 10 minutes outside Ashbourne at most. Lovely views and good food. Nice selection of drinks and all reasonably priced. Can get busy so worth booking in advance if you plan on eating. Menu is extensive and portion sizes are good. Have taken the wife here on a few impromptu date nights as well as celebrating a family 70th (back room hired) and the staff have been pleasant each time. Ample parking.

This chef creates the best batter for his fish compared with other eateries in the area. The food is always very tasty. My husband had the duck which was cook to perfection. The chocolate desert is to die for.

We often eat at The Shire Horse, both food and service are always excellent. Lovely views of The Peak District from the garden.

Got there early evening on a cold wet windy night. The landlord was very welcoming and there was an excellent selection of beers, spirits and soft drinks. The menu was varied if you like fish and meat but not a great selection if you are a vegy. I had the sea food linguine which was plentiful and very nice my wife only had a starter of the mushrooms with stilton which she informs me were ok. We were only there for about one hour the service was efficient and quick but note the evening meals start at 1800 and as we were first in you would expect to get served fairly quick. All in all a nice meal with nice service

Went last Saturday and it was very busy with a special celebration and full tables. However, the staff worked their socks off and were excellant. The chef had previously been asked for Fish Chowder at time of booking and up it came. Both that and the seafood linguine were excellant and I enjoyed the Pie of the Day. The prices were very good, too. Shame I live in Devon!

Although the decor of this pub is in dire need of refurbishment the food is very good. The fish and chips is a must here, the batter is light and crisp right through and the fish is never over cooked. They do have daily specials as well as the usual menu. The prices are just right. The chocolate desert is to die for. The italian manager is always cheerful and friendly.

Brilliant view from the pub garden. The food is wonderful and reasonably priced for such high quality. Dogs are allowed in part of the restaurant. The bar is always very busy full of people.

Went here for a family meal for my grandmas birthday. The bar has a real traditional pub feel, and the restaurant area is very dated, with some areas needing redecorating and cleaning. However, the service was excellent, the menu very good with a variety of choices. The food was beautiful and well cooked. The crockery could do with being renewed as it’s well used.

We went with my nephew girlfriend and her mum its very traditional and a lil out dated but the food was lovely. It was a lil and one staff member serving customers while the owner is drinking coffee with the customers

Rang this pub for a table for two the day before Easter Sunday for lunch. I thought, no chance. The landlord said 'You’ll be lucky', let me have a look. After saying yes then changing his mind he said ‘oh come at 2.30, we’ll get you in’ and he did.
