The Gate Inn in Derbyshire Dales

Booked a table for my husbands birthday on recommendation as we are not from the area...Very disappointed!!!...Ordered starters and my sons arrived with a hair in!!!...Got sent back to be replaced but we had all finished our starters when his arrived.... My husbands main arrived with fries that were cold!!...Again sent back.. Member of staff came to the table when the new fries had been replaced for HOT ones to ask if he was now enjoying his fries!!!!...RUDE.. We had planned on having sweets as when we booked they had said his sweet would come out with a candle etc but given the above we decided to pay and leave as the evening had been very disappointing and ruined...I did speak with the manager who apologised and spoke with the chef who waivered our drinks and same Member of staff (who asked about fries,informed us that the starter with the hair in had been taken off the bill!!!...definitely needs a course in customer service as was made to feel by her that we had no reason to complain....Our bill wasn't cheap!!!)....I don't write reviews but felt compelled to as a birthday meal was ruined

Went for a meal, hadn't booked and the staff were very helpful. We sat in the booths which are cosy, and there was fire burning as the afternoon was cold. Excellent service, good wholesome food, and a drink. A very pleasant experience.

This pud is very popular for good reason the food is good and brinks are nice the elderflower spritz is great .the air co mad the back room very cold

Love the food but feel there should be more healthy options on the menu.

Because we were a large group(21) we had to have a roast meat sandwich, with chips, gravy and sauce. The bread was 1 inch thick, lots of meat and gravy, a very tiny cup of apple sauce about 1x 2 inch and chips so horrible I don’t think even the children ate them. Don’t go as a large group and I’m sure the foood will be fine ( except the chips)

Food here used to be amazing now it’s subpar at best, mainly down to the new menu which doesn’t showcase nearly as much as the pub used to offer.

Visited The Gate for a late lunch. We have visited a couple of times before. The setting, location, and decor were all very nice. Staff were on hand immediately to extend a warm welcome and take us to our table. Our meal, when served a short whole later, was well presented and very tasty. Staff inobtrusively checked whether they could get us anything. We thought the pricing to be reasonable. All in all, it was a very enjoyable visit and we fully intend going again in the near future. Thank you to the team at The Gate.

Great menu with selection of different meals, light bites and sharers. Visited as a family of 6 all chose different meals and all were delicious and generous portions even the light bites. Lovely friendly staff. This is our second visit and were joined by other family members also holidaying locally as we had recommended after our last visit in July.

Pleasant modern and welcoming pub/restaurant. Very busy but service still quick and efficient. Good selection on menu to suit all tastes. Good to see smaller meals for those who don't want full plate or only manage small portions. Prices very reasonable and will visit again when in the area.

First time we’ve been here. Very impressed. Pleasant and friendly staff, very child and dog friendly. Good size play area outside for children. Home cooked British pub food. Good size portions. Reasonable priced for a country pub. Will definitely go again.

We got seated straight away and came to take our drinks order. When our drinks arrived we expected her to take our food order but we waited and waited in the end I went to the bar area and asked is it table service or we have to order at the bar. She said she would come to our table. Once we ordered our meal everything was perfect the meal was lovely and the service improved.

We had a lovely lunch yesterday. The food was really good, I had steak and ale pie and my 2 friends both had the salmon. I didn't eat another thing rest of the day. Will def be going back.

Staff and place are fine the quality of the Sunday lunch is questionable at best. I'd liken it to a school dinner.

Beautiful restaurant, decor and building really done well. Food was fantastic, couldn’t fault it. Service was pleasant, but a little slow to take orders, and food took an awful long time to arrive. Guy serving drinks was pretty clumsy and twice managed to spill some of the drink on me! Sadly the end of the meal I was left irritated by their refusal to accept £50 notes. Not the end of the world, and I understand that there can be issues, but they have no note checkers in place, and if that’s their policy, it should be made clear before ordering. Had I not have had a card with me, it would have been embarrassing. Could have been handled better. Overall, a lovely meal, in a smashing restaurant, and would happily return.

7 of us went for my sons graduation, table was booked for 7.30 Drinks were nice, however had to get up and order ourselves as by looks wasn’t enough of staff to take the orders The food finally arrived at 9pm after us chasing it a few times. Been told because they have a party of 30, hence the wait. So the party of 7 was not important. Do not allow bookings if you can’t cope. The food was disappointing, had to send mine back as you couldn’t eat it. Raw vegetables, dry flatbread, no flavour at all. I ended up ordering a pizza which I obviously had to wait for, by the time the food arrived, I wasn’t hungry The bill came, and though they didn’t charge me for my hardly any halloumi raw veggie skewer, they did charge me half price for the pizza. Very disappointing experience, expensive for what it is, longest wait ever and NEVER again

Lunchtime visit with family (table of 4) on a Monday. We were seated straight away and were told they’d be straight back. We waited 15 mins before someone came back. We ordered food and drinks, no starters just mains. We then waited another 35 minutes for food. The food was really nice non of us had a complaint there. Just unfortunate that the wait was so long to be served on what seemed a quiet lunchtime.

First time my wife and myself visited this establishment. Was passing through after a weekend away and were looking for somewhere that would serve a Sunday roast. Upon arrival, the staff were friendly and found us a nice table at the rear of the pub in the new extension. Service was second to none and we both had a prawn cocktail to start which was presented really nice. We both opted for the roast beef dinner and the food and presentation were excellent. Generous sized portions of beef with fresh vegetables and a giant Yorkshire pudding. Then for pudding we managed to squeeze in a sticky treacle pudding with custard which again was a very generous size and very light and I chose the honey combed ice cream sundae which again was a very generous portion and very well presented. What can we say but if anyone is travelling through this area, then please visit this pub as you won't be disappointed. Food and service was exceptional and even the prices were reasonable. One of the best meals we have ever eaten and we will return one day if we are ever down for another weekend break.

Lovely choice of seating areas, well maintained and clean. Staff were welcoming and friendly and service was exceptional. An extensive menu with great selection of light and main meals. We chose a selection of meals - a stone baked pizza which was topped with fresh ingredients, burger cooked to our fussy daughters choice, fish and chips and a souvlaki kebab which was huge. All were well presented, tasty and generous sized portions.

Overall I had an excellent meal here. The drinks are in decent sized glasses and there is plenty to choose from. I had grilled salmon which was flavourful and delicious. Other people on my table had roast dinner, roast sandwiches and nachos which all looked really tasty and delicious. No one had any issues regarding food. Our waitress was constantly checking up on us and the food came out really fast. Overall no complaints. To top it off they serve mr whippy ice cream for pudding😋

Beautiful pub, food and location. If you're camping nearby, tell the wife you're taking dog for a long walk and pop in for a swift one

Decided to have sunday lunch at the Gate, food very disappointing, we both had roast beef which was tasteless, and far too much of it, veg didn't come until we asked for it, wish we hadn't botherd it was obviously frozen.

Lovely place with a varied menu to cater to all needs. Clean, friendly atmosphere well worth a visit.

This is our staple now when visiting the area. Great food and very child and dog friendly.

Visited here whilst on holiday locally. The staff were all very pleasant and attentive and the food tasted nice. Only reason for giving 4 stars is due to the fact that it all felt quite rushed. We were asked about drinks within a few minutes of being seated and were then asked about ordering food before our drinks had even come. One other point is that I opted for the roast dinner and nothing on my plate was particularly hot and neither was the actual plate. The stuffing was very overcooked and dense and it was all just lukewarm. I understand restaurants with regular table turnovers throughout the day would most likely prepare the majority of components in advance but it would have been nicer is they were hotter. I will say the portions were large and the interior is very tasteful just not worth the higher price point.

Didn't eat here but had a lovely drink on the patio. It's a VERY popular venue one to definitely try to visit.

Went for a meal that was ordered 3 weeks ahead and selected items that were plant based for 2 people. When we arrived one person was given a garlic bread that wasn't vegan and found out after. And the starters and main the kitchen didn't have any food apart from corn on the cob. Very sorry they haven't had there admin together and can't prepare orders way way ahead of time. The acoustics in the rooms were so loud that no one could hear each other. Definitely a adhd and autism nightmare. But the waitresses were lovely very professional with apologies on top of apologies but I think they forgot to smile any time of there shift due to being stretched and stressed beyond belief.

We had a table of 12 at The Gate Tansley to celebrate a family member’s 80th birthday today. The roast dinner was absolutely delicious, one of the best that I have ever had. The staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. I would definitely recommend a visit. ****

Great service plenty of room for party of 6 good food

We celebrated a family members birthday on Saturday at The Gate Inn (12 of us, ranging from age 26-93). The restaurant arranged a pre-order for us which meant the food came out quickly and piping hot. No long waits, attentive staff, and excellent food (huuuge portions!) Clearly a very busy local spot as the place was packed out and had an event on in the function area. While we managed fine, I would say that the environment was quite loud, as its such a popular place, so for those who may struggle with loud spaces, I would advise trying an off-peak time. Average spend per person between £30-£35, including two courses and alcohol for most.

Cosy and relaxed atmosphere. Nicely set out with plenty of space and a log fire which was welcome on a cold April lunchtime. We weren't rushed and enjoyed a family get together with our two pups.

Had a Sunday roast here last weekend, very generous with the meat and other bits but the vegetables were barely cooked, almost rock solid lumps! Service was average to poor. Staff clueless about allergens. Overall was fine but wouldn't recommend

lovely staff, amazing roasts and a great location in the little village of Tansley. always look forward to a Sunday dinner here even as a vegetarian the nut roast is lovely and last time I went they even had a homity pie! spooky cocktail from Halloween was amazingly presented also

Always a great place to eat, especially with the family. Service always brilliant and helpful. Food always arrives quickly. Can be noisy on peak summer days.

Overall meal was to large and beef very chewy . My sister left most of her beef but the assistants gave us a doggy bag. Service very good. It would have been nice if the plate had been set with a bit less food and not great slabs of beef layer over loads of mash potatoes.

We’ve been to The Gate a few times and went for an early Mothers Day lunch. It’s wheelchair accessible almost entirely (front entrance, toilets, certain tables), great for kids and an entire gluten free menu, good 2-1 cocktails between 12:00-19:00. Big hitter with all the family.

Loved our time there, more importantly so did my mother,as it's mothering Sunday. Food excellent quality and portion size. Good drink selection, staff very good, it never took long to attract someone to the table. I would go back tomorrow, if my waistline would let me! Thoroughly recommend.

A lovely pub tucked away in Tansley village. Decent sized car park. Dog friendly - our dog was given a fuss, fresh water and treats. We were there for lunch. I had the battered haddock sandwich with mushy peas, fries and salad. My husband had steak pie, veg and chips. The food was delicious, portions were very generous (we couldn’t eat it all) and the price was very reasonable. No room for dessert! Staff were professional and friendly. We’ll definitely go again.

Me wife booked a table for 2 for my birthday (2-3-24) and we was put in a side room with 2 big tvs with football on!! but it was freezing inside the room not very good when you eating your food with your big coat on 😂, but got to say the food was delicious

Took the family for Sunday dinner. Was not disappointed. Food is fantiscit and portion was great. Staff very good and welcoming. Good selection of foods and drinks. The halloumi fries from the starters are amazing. Will be going again in the summer to enjoy the beer garden

Felt very fortunate to have found this amazing place! They were fantastic and squeezed 4 adults and 2 toddlers in at short notice on a busy Saturday evening. The staff were all very friendly, the food was delicious, and one member of staff even blew up some extra balloons for the kids - huge thank you to her!! Would definitely recommend this pub if you’re in the area and we will definitely be returning!

The first time I was disappointed in a meal here. I ordered the steak pie which came with a mix of veg which were virtually uncooked.

We have been to the Gate before and always enjoyed it, today was no exception. It was a busy Sunday lunch, we were greeted quickly and shown to a table. The service was friendly and efficient. We both had the roast lamb and it was delicious. I would highly recommend The Gate.

A very well presented restaurant and the staff where very attentive from the start. The starters we had where very tasty indeed and of generous portion size. Our mains however let the restaurant down massively. The Thai green curry was very bland and a tasteless gloop, even the rice was awful. The whole recipe needs scrapping and starting again. The staff did take our drinks off the bill as we complained. The meal left us feeling unwell to be honest. A shame, as like we said, the venue is very nice.

Visited whilst staying in the area . Comfortable pub/ restaurant.Ordered the steak ale pie and a fillet steak . Excellent for both , steak Medium rare and so soft, pepper corn sauce delicious. Steak and ale pie so tender , delicious; finished off by fudge cake and ice cream , seriously so good . 10/10 meal, Shame we have no restaurants in Sutton Coldfield as good as this .

Went it for a lunch with friends and was welcomed with a smile and wonderful place to eat drink and catch up. I would highly recommend , can't wait to go back again soon.

Lovely public house, nice food, nice atmosphere, Sat at table 22 overlooking the fire, the only reason I'm giving 4 stars, the music was way too loud spoiling a relaxing meal.

Good pub food , that is good value but also very well cooked and presented.

I went there with great hopes. After waiting for a while we asked if it was a table or bar service. We were then brought the menus . The main part of the meal arrived, after a while the vegetables arrived. The swede, Monge toe and beans were nearly raw. You could not put a fork into the swede. I know what el Dante is the vegetables had been blanched at the best. The roasted vegetables were hard. No attention was given to my guest after the meal was served. The presentation was good but the finish was poor. No one came to check if the meal was OK or if anyone would like a desert. So we could not speak to the staff about the meals. It was not a pleasant experience, I dragged my guest for 3/4 of an hour over Derbyshire for this lacklustre experience . They were not even interested when we were paying the bill. I have no idea why we got such bad service. Apparently they do not care.

Attended a wedding gathering . This was our first time at the Gate Inn and it won't be our Last the food and service was second to none and the venue was excellent well done the gate inn.

Went for Christmas Day lunch, and want to say it was the best we've ever had. Everything was outstanding, from the service to the food. I would definitely recommend this place for Christmas Day, and their food in general, but book early!

Nice place to eat ,drink and chat with friends and family

An amazing place. Busy throughout the day, great food and terrific atmosphere. All the appearances of a new-build but the ambience of a traditional country pub.

Food nice if a little slow which may be its cooked to order. Bread buns for burgers not the best Brioche buns should be served with them all.

Easy parking at a modern well appointed busy pub. I had the steak and ale pie, which was incredible. My partner had the chilli, which she tells me was fantastic. We were very grateful that we were allowed to bring our dog with us who wants to add that her chicken breast was very delicious. Attentive and knowledgeable staff made our visit to The Gate an amazing experience.
