Amazing pub. The food is out of this world a real gem of a place.

Good food at a good price. The young lady that served us behind the bar was such a lovely person (dark haired one) She was friendly, and made us feel very welcome. A credit to the restaurant.

Friday. Food served from 6pm so had to wait 45 mins. Worth the wait. Usually opt for a pie when I've been winter hiking but they'd sold out. I'm so glad they had. I had a burger instead and in my 50+ years this was the best burger I can ever remember having. Lovely, very reasonably priced beer too, and pleasant staff. I wish this pub was near where I live.

Went to try out the fish and chips! Very good excellent service. Out of the 10 pubs in our unofficial fish and chip survey of Staffordshire and Derbyshire so far they are in third place.(out of 10 establishments) Well worth eating here!

I feel as though I can't really offer a half decent review. We went here for our works Christmas Dinner, 🎄 so there was only us and another table in a different area. The food is very very mediocre, I wouldn't recommend if your a foodie. The staff were polite and attentive. Atmosphere, I can't comment, because everywhere was empty. Certainly is not what it was twenty years ago! And that's a real shame

Highly recommend. Booked a table for Sunday lunch. Good choice of food on the menu, Sunday roasts (choice of several) and other dishes such as ham, egg and chips and vegetarian options. Locally sourced food, Meakins mentioned on the menu. Staff were very welcoming and efficient, tables cleared quickly. Water offered on arrival for both us and our dog, which was great. Ordered gammon and chicken. Busy Sunday service so there was a little wait, but the place was busy. Log burner kept us warm. Food arrived on hot plates (always a good sign). Good selection of vegetables, fresh and well prepared, kitchen had this spot on. Not rushed at all, and staff efficiently cleared our table once we had finished. Nice mix of families, couples and people watching the football. Highly recommend.

My daughter and her boyfriend were coming to visit from Manchester. We were recommended the pub for food from a good friend, there were 5 of us in total. Pub busy and we were told 1 hour wait which was fine. After an hour and a quarter checked with staff who confirmed they were plating food now. After another 15 mins food came - vile! The chicken on the chicken and stuffing baps was like rubber and dry as a flip flop! The server didnt provide cutlery even though some of the party had food that you need to eat with a knife and fork…no napkins were provided either and she was really miserable. All in all a dire experience. I requested a pot of tea and was told that this would be £6.60! What on earth? Never again!

Went for lunch today with my family. Waited 1hr 25 mins for the food it was absolutely abysmal

I booked the pub for a Christmas lunch for my two U3A French classes, to celebrate the "end of term". We were a party of 16 originally, which changed to 14, and one gentleman had forgotten to order a main course, but all these complications were handled well. The meals were very good indeed. I often lunch here, and the pub meals are excellent! However, this was restaurant standard, and the portions were very generous. The serving staff were efficient and friendly and the head chef even came to the table to talk to us. We all agreed we'd made a good choice! One of the group's lurcher was also made welcome( see photo)

Dinner here for birthday celebration. Over 20 of us! Service was great; with cheerful and attentive servers dealing with us efficiently and helpfully. The food was excellent. British home cooked fayre perfectly presented and cooked. So much better than other chain formulaic menus. Very reasonably priced too! Excellent and thoroughly recommended.

We booked the upstairs room for a birthday meal with family and friends. The staff were so helpful, attentive and friendly and the food was delicious. Lovely to have freshly cooked food and a great variety and choice on the menu. Everyone had something they really enjoyed. Highly recommend.

Loved the food here exceeded our expectations. It was really good quality home cooked food. Not your run of the mill pub grub. The prices were very competitive and the staff were warm friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend The Red Lion in Leek. We’re certainly planning on going making a return visit.

We were a large party and had an amazing time. The new food menu is outstanding. All freshly cooked, served piping hot and tasted amazing. The service we received could not be faulted, everyone was so attentive and helpful. They really went the extra mile to make our evening special

We called in for Sunday lunch. Lovely atmosphere. Staff very friendly and polite especially the young man that served us with our food. He was very polite and helpful. The food was lovely and we shall definitely be returning.

Not sure if the staff outweigh the food or the food outweighs the staff here but either way both are excellent! We were served by a lovely friendly guy who was great at his job & looked after us a treat. The food was delicious, hot & plentiful. It was a shame we didn’t have room for a pudding. Reasonable prices & they don’t overcharge for drinks either.

We're visiting the area and ate lunch here today. We were blown away with the high quality of our meals, two mains on a lunchtime deal, and the brilliant value for money given the portions we enjoyed. A couple of cracking cask ales on, too. Friendly staff serving drinks and bringing food to the tables. If we have another mooch around Leek before heading home, we'll be heading back here, for sure.

The food and atmosphere were both very good. And the servers were helpful and friendly. However the 3 behind the bar couldn’t be bothered to answer questions about the menu

Went over on a Monday evening for a glass of wine and a natter over some food. This place is not busy on a Monday and we had the pick of the tables. We sat on the most comfortable setter in front of the woodburner and then moved to a table to eat. Menu is extensive and full of the usual fare. However, being a light eater, I was happy to see a section that provided two meals for £18.85. We had a burger.... looked great, skin on chips and a chicken breast with perfectly cooked vegetables and thick cut chips, which I thought were delicious. The staff were lovely, friendly, and on the ball. Would definitely return.... xx

I have been to two parties in the upstairs function room and one night in the bar when it turns into a disco. Nice establishment and good service. Would recommend. Not had food.

Amazing bar staff. Super happy and helpful. Food was 10/10. So much flavour in the meals. I had the nibbles and they were so filling and yummy. Kids burger was amazing. And the rest of my table loved all there meals. Perfect all round.

Lamb shank was delicious and cooked perfectly with good portion sizes, spiced apple and ginger crumble was also sensational. Really good home cooked food!

First time I've been in the Red lion and it had a good atmosphere and even a pub quiz

The Red Lion is located in Leek market place. There is no customer car park but there is pay & display parking in the market place directly outside the front of the pub. There were plenty of seats and tables and a large selection of drinks including two Hydes hand pulled real ales at a lunchtime offer of £3.20 per pint. The food menu was varied with something for everyone and the food was cooked and presented to an acceptable level. The service was good and the value for money was OK. If in Leek it's worth a visit to this 18th century pub.

I have always enjoyed myself in the red lion. However the bouncer that was on tonight had massive control issues and a complex about having that tiny bit of control over people and has completely ruined the night we were having. He didn't let us in because our friend had 'sports shorts' on and then also decided that the entire group wouldn't be allowed in. He was absolutely horid for the entire encounter, something I personally find issue with is when bouncers say you can't do something because they say so and refuse to give a reason, when that isn't their job in the slightest, their job is to look after the business and the patrons. I'm unsure who the bouncers are employed by but they need reminding that they need to protect people and not just be obnoxious, power mad, idiots, who decide whether they like you or not, and then try and ruin your night. We also asked to speak to the manager, who appeared too young to be in charge of the responsibly that he was left with, he and the other bouncer both agreed that the bouncer in charge wasn't making the correct decision but neither felt like they had the authority to tell him so, leaving us with a night that had been spoilt, and the red lion without custom. Bouncers with this attitude are dangerous and should be challenged and questioned whether they are fit for the responsibility that their job entails.

If I could leave no stars I would. The bouncer was awful..

We arrived at the red lion to be turned away because someone was wearing shorts, we left and so did the person in shorts. We went back and were refused entry for no reason... the bouncer said I don't have to give a reason. The guy with the shorts had left... the bouncer just refused us for no reason. Would never come here again. God complex bouncer who needs to cheer up.

Children made to feel very welcome immediately upon arrival with some colouring books and pencils. Food was lovely and the kids ice cream was incredible.

We arrived and ordered our main meals and drinks which were served in good time. Then we ordered coffees and an Eton Mess. Coffees arrived OK. The Eton Mess dessert didn't arrive...I waited, and waited and waited. I returned to the bar to enquire where my dessert was. Initially I was told there would an hour and half wait (!) for this new food order. I pointed out it had already been ordered and paid for. At this the server told me it would be around another 15 minutes. When I said that this was unacceptable (it would meant around a total of 40 minutes after ordering) she went to get the young man who had taken the order. More excuses...the pub had since my order become busy etc, etc. He promised me 5 minutes maximum - 7 minutes later it arrived. No offer of a reduction, free extra coffee whilst I waited. The food is good, but communication with customers seems poor, let alone customer service and wanting to keep customers on side. We were also looking for somewhere for Sunday lunch; after this experience we are going elsewhere.

We ordered mains and drinks which were served in good time. Then ordered an Eton Mess and coffees. Coffees came ok, then the wait, and wait and wait for the dessert. Back to bar...it hasn't been done; plethora of excuses (we have had a lot orders; and being told that there would be further wait of 5 or 10 minutes. Then told 5 minutes max.(it took 7 minutes in the end) This is a dessert that takes but a few minutes to prepare. No offer of a reduction or extra drinks. I wish I had ordered mains and dessert at the same time, or asked for a refund when I chased up the delay.( I left feeling as though I had been made to feel as though it was my fault for ordering a dessert! (None of the servers advised me of a delay when ordering)

Good food, good value. Staff were very friendly and helpful, and welcoming. I'd certainly eat here again. Photo is a gammon steak, which was great.

Bar staff were really pleasant. Jack was our food server and he was fantastic, with such a lovely smile. The nibbles 3 for £14.95 are great. Lovely service all round.

Food here was lovely! Jack our waiter was really helpful, very polite and friendly! Checked we had all we needed and came back to check the food was ok! Such a lovely young man!

Thoroughly underwhelming food, unseasoned. Staff sorted out a steak that was just gristle, helpful and nice about it, but returned a new steak with same problem. The Wetherspoons mixed grill is better, which may inform the people in the kitchen......

I recently visited this establishment with my family and was distraught when my food was stone cold and they say service witha smile well this was more like service with a scowl.

Beyond abysmal. A lot of kitchens have joke signs up to lighten the mood. If they have one here it must read “We have given up”. This was quite possibly the most awful, slapdash, uncared for food I have ever been served. Three meals. At the price point, you don’t actually expect very much. Looking at what everyone else manages in the 10 - 15 quid bracket for a main course, you do expect somebody to care enough to put edible food onto plates. This kitchen doesn’t care. Meal One: a cheeseburger with thick cut fries. Arrived with just one burger and skinny fries. When pointed out, the poor adolescent who had to deliver it looked embarrassed and apologised. She returned later to say that the chef would cook another and keep that one. Meal Two: 8oz. Rump Steak and thick cut chips. The cooking of the steak was requested medium rare. It was cooked to that point. But the actual steak was stringy and inedible. As in, spit it out. We found that out a few minutes later, when the waiting staff finally remembered that cutlery is usually provided for guest use. A steak knife that we requested arrived a couple of minutes even later. Would that it had not … Having ordered three meals, and seen only two, I told my dining companions to go ahead. Meal Three: Bit of a classic. Half Roast Chicken with Pig in Blanket, Stuffing, Gravy, peas and the inevitable thick cut chips. With a third set of cutlery to follow a minute or two later. Where to start … Well, quite how it’s possible for the pig in blanket to be simultaneously burned and raw somewhat defeats me. When you pull the wing off the half roast chicken and it crumbles to dust, you don’t have to be Escoffier to know that this chicken has stormed the gates of Hell. Or seen an oven far too many times. Burned, dry, tasteless. I wish I’d tried the beer mat instead. The stuffing had the taste and texture of an overused Brillo pad. Spat it out. The peas were, well, green. Nobody can mess up that. So, small kudos to the cook. Second burger arrived about 10 minutes in. You know how it is - get hungry enough and you’ll eat anything. While we were… errmmm … participating in this theatre of the absurd, a table in the same space complained. The chef came out and explained that, in their case, she was sent the food by the brewery and portions were set by them, not her. At least, that seemed to be the essence of it. We were only, after all, spectators to this conversation. Whatever. Every kitchen cooks to a budget. We all know that. But if the kitchen is forced to send out superannuated, multiply cooked and reheated, stale, bodged, uncared for food to maintain margins, it’s time for a rethink. Brewers Fayre. Brewers Unfair, I’d say. Unfair on the poor cook, unfair on the untrained and unskilled waiting staff (not their fault that the basics of waiting haven’t been explained) and most of all, unfair on the customers. Avoid.

My mother once told me if you can't say something nice to say nothing. I'll leave it at that. Won't be returning, certainly won't eat there again.

A really good pub. Lovely friendly staff / atmosphere. Always a good pint or a coffee if that is preferred. I have had a number of meals here and they are always very good quality and value. Particularly recommend the steak and kidney pudding.

Great pub, lovely staff, delicious food. My son, my dog and I were reserved a great table for watching the rugby (which we had requested). Can't fault it.

Stopped in after a hike in the Peaks and wasn't disappointed in the slightest. A lovely pub with friendly staff. The atmosphere was super welcoming and relaxed, with lovely open fires and honest, well priced food. Really dog friendly and will certainly be going back again.

Visited for Sunday lunch for a birthday get together. Seemed very short staffed, the bar staff were having to leave the bar unattended to deliver food to tables. A simple 'won't be a moment' would have gone a long way instead of just being ignored and left stood at the bar without being served for a good five minutes. The food arrived, I like vegetables al dente, but the parsnips, beans and cabbage were very undercooked, half of our party had to change their choice of meat as by 1 o'clock they had already run out of beef. We cleared the table ourselves and the dirty plates were still there when 2 of our parties sweets arrived (one of which was the wrong order). Very poor all round and unfortunately put a dampener on celebrations.

First time in the pub after being invited by my daughter and son in law to take part in a quiz night. Great evening with a well organised quiz. Some very knowledgeable and competitive teams; we weren't too bad, top 5, but I was more of a hindrance than a help. Friendly , efficient staff to look after us. We'll worth a visit.

Had a lovely lunch with friends last week. We hadn't booked & there were a number of tables reserved for larger groups. Nevertheless, we were able to find a table & although we were informed there could be a slight wait due to the pre-bookings, our food came promptly & the staff were excellent in slotting our orders in between the larger bookings. The food was excellent & very good value. Great service overall - thank you.

Had a rump steak sandwich full of sinew and could not chew complained chef said some people like it that way never heard any thing like it do not have.

Fantastic food. Everything came out hot, not warm like some places. Even let us change things to our order. Guy behind the bar called josh, was friendly, hard working, polite and nothing too much trouble. My friend had lasagne off the specials board and it's was chunky mets pieces not mince so pleasantly surprised. Definitely returning back. Well done guys x

We went and ordered food and at the serving window we watched a young man pour some sauces and then lick the rim of the bowl then serve it to customer. After confronting the young man the manager or supervisor then came to us and told us he was very upset with the matter and she called us bullies and refused us our refund stating we had already eaten which wasn't the case. I can say the gentleman who did give the refund was very understanding and gave us our refund. Wouldn't recommend

Been Red lion a few times now for meals and drinks and a private function. For drinks it's a solid pub,meals just above average and private function we went the staff were excellent,room was just about big enough but the buffet provided was average at best.

The food was pretty good good. Nice Sunday Lunch meal with my family. The service was good. We enjoyed the atmosphere of the pub.

I went with a group of friends for a catch up we had great service, cocktails were very good value you did have to have 2 of the same to get the deal, but to be honest that wasn't a problem. I had the special chicken mushroom and stilton sauce this was very tasty and very good value. We all said we would be back. The staff were all very friendly

Tried to go for food waited ten mins to get served and then got told they weren’t serving food because it was too hot. Went somewhere else
