This is a great Country Pub, I have stayed here since Easter. The rooms are 'high-spec' with comfortable beds and jacuzzi baths. The staff are friendly and polite, going out of their way to make you feel at home. The food is good and wholesome and not unreasonably priced. I couldn't recommend the place more highly.

I have just spent a 3 night stay with my humans at this lovely dog friendly hotel. All the staff were so welcoming .I was even offered a dog bed ,although had brought my own .My humans thought their room was lovely and the food...I even got given a sausage at breakfast ! A lane beside the hotel led to a grassy area which was very handy for my early morning and bedtime trips outside. Seems like we will be going back for another visit as our stay was so perfect

We hadn't visited The Oak Tree at Helperby since the pandemic after having been fairly frequent guests before that. We had tailed off our visits however as the food had very much gone downhill since our first visit way back in 2013. We decided, after having viewed the latest five star reviews on here to give our old favourite another go. I have to say we were disappointed in what we found when we got there, staff although friendly had no attention to detail ie not saying time breakfast was. The room (the oak) was in need of some tlc with stains on the ottomon and net curtains and needed a deep clean. The food on the evening tasted frozen and we and other customers were nit advised when things were off the menu and another customer was even served a different item without being told. We know this pub is a country pub that welcomes dogs but the new rule that allows dogs in every bedroom I think is a step to far. Overall a pleasant stay but we won't be in a rush to come back which is a shame as used to be frequent visitors.

My fiancé and I visited yesterday while we were in the area. He used to live next door to the pub and worked in the Carpenters so we thought we’d stop in for lunch to see how everything is going. The pub itself is lovely and warm with inviting staff. We had a look at the menu and while the main menu is small, it has pub classics and local favourites. My partner chose the Korean chicken which was fresh and crispy which a tangy sauce and I had the ham hock terrine which I thoroughly enjoyed. As small as it may seem, I appreciated that everything on my plate looked and tasted homemade. Even my toast for my ham hock was lovely and the sauce was like nothing I’ve had before but I loved it. My partner had the steak and I opted for the chicken on the specials but replaced the bacon and cream sauce with peppercorn. Can I just say that my chicken was the best chicken I’ve had in a long time?! The only dish I can think of that surpassed that crispy skinned, juicy chicken I had at the Oak Tree was made my own chef (my fiancé). The creamed potatoes and vegetables were even perfectly done, well seasoned and delicious. My partner enjoyed his steak and it was cooked as he requested. Our only comment was that the peppercorn sauce, which was nice with the whole peppercorns, was a bit salty. However, it was fine once mixed with the dinners. A touch of extra cream would go a long way though! The staff and the chef were very nice. Attentive and polite and the chef came out to ask us how our dinner was which was a nice touch. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves and would recommend popping in for a nice, home cooked meal!

We haven't visited our local for many months so decided to try out the new menu and management team, by visiting for Sunday lunch. Warm and cosy atmosphere, the menu was good with choices for everyone along with chefs specials. We sat in the dining room with its warm fire and enjoyed the pork roast dinner and the black garlic chicken which was delicious. No room for dessert on this occasion but really enjoyed ourselves. The room was nicely done and the bed very comfortable. It had a good, well appointed bathroom and efficient shower. It has the potential to be very good, but for a few areas of miscommunication and lack of attention to detail. We were invited to book a table in the restaurant, which in fairness we didn't do. When we arrived we asked about eating (7pm Sunday) to be told the restaurant had closed at 4pm. In the room there were tea making facilities, no coffee, but more importantly no cups or mugs! There had been a miscommunication between the Oak Tree's staff over bedding. I am allergic to feathers so instead of simply ensuring the pillows were non-feather they had all been removed from the room. Sadly, this was unnecessary as the main staff on Monday morning explained and was a mistake on their part.

I took my 85 yr old mother here for Sunday lunch. The food was reasonable, though treatment of customers (i.e us) was very poor. My mother was bitten by a dog during our visit. The dog approached her, and she simply stroked it. My mother was left in tears, with holes in her jumper and bleeding from her wrist. We heard locals making inappropriate comments, such as the dog hadn’t actually bitten her, and that no one believed her. We confirmed that the dog had bitten her, which resulted in the dog then being taken to the upstairs of the pub. There was no apology from the ?manageress, and no interest in how my mother was. We were simply told that ‘dogs can be a bit funny sometimes’. Five to 10 minutes before this, a toddler had been running around. The incident was reported to the police, though we chose not to persue legal action. We will never return to this pub, nor recommend it to anyone.

I noticed this place whilst we were driving to a hotel about 15 minutes away over the May bank holiday weekend. I'm so glad I took note of it! I was hoping we could have one nice meal during the weekend, which was ostensibly a getaway intended to get the kids out of the house for the first time in forever. Cue lots of quick, kid-friendly meals.. so this was our treat! I was particularly impressed that after we booked we received a phone call asking us if we would like to pre-order to make sure that we could get what we wanted, as my husband and I indicated we were vegetarians and it was going to be quite a full restaurant that evening. Preordering turns out to be a real godsend when you have kids with you! It meant that we didn't have to wait long for our food to come. I was quite grateful we had been able to pre-order. Our meals were such a nice change from the usual! The kids' fish and chips was absolutely perfect and they yummed it all down. It was so good and filling that by the time desert came, my 7 year old daughter could hardly get through half of her towering ice cream sundae. The cheese board was lovely and I had one of the nicest dessert wines I've ever tasted. This was quite a find and definitely worth it!

We got a Saturday night table at short notice, which was good. Service was informal and quite chatty. The food was a bit of a mixed picture - my mozzarella salad had far too many leaves, and the pickled beetroot disks were hard and had little taste; my pappardelle was very al dente though the lemon sauce was well judged; the prawn and crayfish salad was bland; and the shoulder of lamb was very good. Would I go back? Probably, though I’d tone down my food expectations and go simple/traditional. But this place could invest in the food/chef and be a local gem!

No welcome on arrival, we were greeted by frosty faced staff who simply asked 'What der ya wanna drink?'.Taken to our table and waited 20 minutes before anyone came and another 25 minutes before the starters arrived. The pub was almost empty (clearly others know what we did not). The menu had gone up £2 per head form what we had seen on the website, earlier today - apparently 'due to the change of beef joint'.Starters OK but very small portions of garlic mushrooms and we had to ask for teaspoons to go with the prawn cocktail.Main courses very minimal and of poor quality. Just about enough pork but it was machine cut, dried and utterly tasteless. Those who had been were presented with two very small machine cut slices which again looked as thought it had been sitting under a heat lamp for ages. Vegetables OK.Skipped the deserts and coffee as we did not want to waste more money. This claims to be a premium establishment but the service and food are far from premium.

Staff were so lovely and we're happy to serve our 14 month old granddaughter, who ate so well from their children's menu. My starter was crispy chilli beef on a noodle salad- so tasty, and I followed this with a honey glazed bacon chop from their more economical menu. It was only when we returned to our accommodation that we learned that we would have been eligible for an "early bird" meal. We skipped starters but it took some 45 minutes to produce the main course. At that time we were the only diners, and we thought this took far too long. We stopped going to the Oak for several months after some very disappointing meals. We were told by friends that it had changed recently and was now very good so we gave it another try a few weeks ago and it was superb we had the seafood platter and chips. We visited the Oak last Friday with my brother in law telling him how great it was and to our dismay it was truly awful. We had the Friday fish special and the roast chicken special. When the food arrived we looked at the chicken special, at £13.95, and we were convinced they had left half the food off. It was miniscule. It hardly filled the centre of the plate. When the Friday special fish came my husband immediately put most of his chips onto my brother in laws plate. The fish was terrible, wet batter and soggy fish, the chips were awful , skin on, over cooked/burnt , cold and soggy. The whole meal was disgusting I know you are going to say you should have complaint but my brother in law had just lost his wife and we did not want to make things any worse. When the waiter asked if everything was OK we did not comment. We will not give the Oak another try.More

7 7 antes de las 7 era una gran relación calidad-precio. Tuvimos una excelente comida. Pero por desgracia las bebidas a precios decepcionantes en una gran forma. 10 libras por una copa de vino y una caña. 😱 nos disuadió volver tbh

Genuinely incredible food and drink options. Very well priced at 3 courses for less than £25. Well situated and has a stunning courtyard. The staff and food are both amazing. Can't recommend highly enough.

Visited here for Fathers Day. On arrival, we were greeted by smiling, friendly staff, and shown to our table. One of our party is Vegan, and the Manageress was very helpful in offering an appropriate lunch, which looked really appetising. The rest of our party ordered the Sunday roast options. We all had starters, which were delicious too! The meals were presented well, and service definitely came with a smile! Happy Staff makes for happy diners! As an added bonus, the Fathers were presented with a bottle of beer and a Yorkie bar, which was a nice touch! Cannot fault the service and food here, would definitely recommend, and visit again. Thank you Oak Tree Inn!

A very friendly and welcoming atmosphere here. Nice ale selection and great menu. We opted for the roast pork with all the trimmings - very good it was too! Served with a dish of shatteringly good crackling. Bread and butter pud was to die for!!A few beers in the beer garden rounded a very pleasant afternoon off perfectly.

Just had a faultless meal. So nice to have a proper menu on a Sunday night not a continued Sunday lunch. Service a little slow but they were busy and it didn't spoil our evening. Will definitely return.

We enjoyed a lunch here recently on a Saturday. We had booked ahead and although not busy when arrived it was reasonably full when we left so if you happened across the Oak by chance then you'd go hungry. Our table was in the dining room (our preference) rather than the bar area. Good menu with plenty of choice. All the usual fare plus some specials. Our meals were hot, tasty, and the portion size was right. A couple of comments from us include the fact that the mushroom sauce was a bit thin and runny, and the piri piri chicken was dry. Sticky toffee pudding was good. Five of us, one round of drinks, two courses, plus coffee, worked out at £25 a head. Plenty of parking and all on the flat so good for those who are not so steady on their feet, as one of our party. Good service from the staff.

Don't really like writing anything negative about places, but The Oak Tree deserves a mention. Food was nice, nothing exceptional, but nothing to complain about either. Let down by poor waiter, who clearly feels he's more important than the customers. Rude and inattentive. Repeatedly ignored 'excuse me's' from our table. No ackowledgement at all, just continually blanking us. In the end had to wait 15 mins for the bill and nearly another fifteen to pay it.Shame - could be a nice place to eat.

We have been here before for a lunch so decided to book an overnight stayThe room was lovely lots of extras even fresh milk in a flask for a cuppaUnfortunately we were disappointed with the food we found it a bit uninteresting and a bit blandAt breakfast we were given a menu which said help yourself to the buffet to start but there was no buffetMy husband asked if he could have cereals and it seemed a bit of a problem no juice or toast was offered We just chose off the menu for eggs and bacon, this came and was quite alright and the waitress was pleasant and polite but we were very disappointed with the effort put inWe were the only people staying so perhaps this explains why this happened but everyone should be offered the same even if they are the only ones eating breakfast, I doubt we will go again the staff however were good

More than just a local pub and more than just a restaurant, which is ideal if new to a village. Friends very happy with this being on their doorstep and understand why. Place was busy with locals drinking and people dining. Several offers such as early bird deals which are good value. Points system with stamps per meal can give £20 discount for 12 meals purchased. Had scallops ( excellent) and pie ( very good ) and some good reasonable wine. It is part of a chain and common themes evident but that gives some reassurance of quality.

We have just returned from a Friday night stay at The Oak Tree Inn. The greeting on arrival was welcoming and professional. We were even shown to our room (the Hornbeam) by the manager, who then talked us through the key room features - fresh milk in a flask, how to operate the heating etc. The room was great, huge comfortable bed, and the shower was amazing. We had our evening meal there and that was good too - exactly what you would expect from a country pub. Breakfast was very nice. Overall, we can't fault this first class experience with friendly staff and we will definitely be back.

Big and meaty, a little bit dry but plenty of cheese and bacon and a very good brioche roll. The chips were also very good.My wife had the 10oz steak which was cooked perfectly. She said it was too big but I helped finish it!Chocolate fondant for dessert was very good and I'm sure we will be back.

We visited on a busy Saturday night; rugby was on the TV in the bar so it was very busy. However in the restaurant it was much quieter and we were given a nicely located table by the wood burner. Service was very friendly but the starters arrived a few minutes after ordering them...and the main courses immediately after we'd finished our starters. This was too fast, we could have been in and out in 45 mins after 2 courses! We were then left alone but as we didn't want anything else it detracted from the experience. The food was very good (we had black pudding croquettes and goats cheese tart to start followed by 2 different types of burger) but not sure whether we will return.

Like the previous recent review we've eaten here several times before but won't be hurrying to go back. After 10 minutes waiting to get a drink watching 1 poor girl struggling behind the bar and another girl hiding in the wings blatantly doing all she could to avoid helping out we knew that we probably in for a long night. When the food did eventually arrive it was far from the standards expected for the money. Portions were poor & the food was particularly bland. The atmosphere has also changed in there as it felt cold didn't look particularly clean. As stated earlier, we won't be hurrying back.

My girlfriend and i have been numerous times to the oak tree and haven't been disappointed before , however on the last two occasions we have felt that it has come up short , we went out for a nice meal on new years day , however the music was so loud we could of been in a club , and saying as there was only the two of us in a large room it didn't make for a cosy intimate environment .We didnt mention it as it was actualy comical how loud it was.Songs were swearing and kids had just sat down in the restaurant behind us.The food is quite expensive for what it actually is now and it just lacks soul and care , which often happens with chains.Chips that are just boiled chunks of potato .End crusts or bread served while we wait for food. We were the only two customers in our room and we ordered two mains and a portion of chips , the chips didn't arrive until 5 minuites after our mains. They arrived without any explanation which is just silly .We noticed the table behind us had similar problems as half their starters arrived 10 minutes later than the others , with so many pubs and restaurants around I'll probably go somewhere else in future.

My husband and I took his parents for a pre-Christmas lunch on Christmas Eve. We've visited the Durham Ox (sister pub), in Crayke many times, but The Oak is a bit closer to us now, so we thought we'd give it a try. There are many similarities between the two, both have really homely, welcoming atmospheres, and the food is really great in both. The one thing I would say, which sets the two apart is the how the staff were above and beyond.I highly recommend this place for a great overall experience!

We had previously visited the Crown & Cushion at Welburn which is part of the same group. The Oak Tree has a similar style of layout although I don't think it is quite as many tables. We visited lunch time, quite late and there wasn't anyone else eating so was a bit worried that it wasn't as popular and therefore not as good as the C&C. The food was excellent and we really enjoyed our lunch and will be trying out further restaurants in the Provenance Inn & Hotel Group.

The food for both our evening meal and breakfast this morning was top notch and the choice was great, The staff were all very pleasant and efficient and nothing was too much trouble. Booked this as a last minute birthday treat for my wife and it definitely didn't disappoint. This is now definitely on our list to revisit and hopefully for longer.Overall would highly recommend. The website and signage suggest that this is a steak restaurant, but it is so much more than this. The food was excellent with a wide choice. My starter and mains were both from the specials menu - chorizo & scallops to start with, followed by pheasant ragu, both of which were delicious. Managed to find room for some chocolate torte which was sublime and so light. Staff really helpful and friendly.

We travelled for one night to the Oak tree Inn with our dog Riley - what was really depressing was we only had booked for one night. The reception we received from Ryan and his team was first class. Their dog friendly room and bar area were superb. The room with stunning en-suite was one of the best we've ever stayed in(dog or not). The food was fab and they even laid our some dog biscuits for Riley's breakfast. We would highly recommend - food, room, ambiance were all first class. We will definitely be back

We stumbled upon The Oak Tree Inn without a reservation, it looked nice and we thought we would give it a go. We were slightly shocked that at 12.20pm on a wet Sunday they had to check if they could accommodate a couple of walk ins. We were accepted and seated in a very tastefully decorated dining area which is exactly like the picture on the website. We were given the Sunday Lunch menu which is not displayed on the Website. Craig ordered the Soup to start and the Sirloin for his main. I ordered the Pate to start and the Pork main (homemade apple sauce), both had huge Yorkshire Puddings. It was delicious. The portions were fantastic, the service was very good, the temperature of the food was spot on. The atmosphere was very pleasant. 2 starters, 2 mains, 3 glasses of wine and a sparkling water came to a total of £57. We will most definitely be going again but will book a table next time because after 20 minutes in the restaurant it quickly began filling up with families and couples.
