We went for Sunday roast. We found the food and the service to be average. If you eat outside you order at the bar inside and your food is brought out to you. We liked that there was various seating options/sections outside.

Sat in a pod which was lovely. Good choice in the menu even for vegetarians and no cliched nut roast. Online booking was easy. All food was hot and freshly prepared. Served on a warm plate. Good service. Best roast dinner in a pub that I have ever had. Clearly a pub that is privately owned and it shows because of the care given.

I've been a regular here for many years, various owners... but finally, it's reached its in the best hands! Wonderful staff, beautifully decorated, lovely menu (albeit abit basic) quality excellent & consistent. I booked a Pod for my daughters bday (25th). It was really special...Freya served us & she was amazing 👏 a credit to the owners. Definitely pre-book, lovely atmosphere and the nicest lamb I've ever eaten out, as a chef and eaten in many Michelin restaurants, this lamb was the best!

Went as a family of 6 to celebrate birthday. This place is a proper village pub. The food is ok but expensive for what you get. Don't get me wrong it is nice but I think for the money you spend, there are better options. The service is very good and friendly. The ales are ok if not a little limited. This is a lovely local pub with different themed nights which is nice as well.

The Oak Smannell is the sort of pub/restaurant everybody wishes they had as their local. A warm welcome, a great choice of beers, ciders, and all the usual drinks, coupled with a great food menu. The staff young and more senior were polite, efficient and engaging, going out of their way to make sure everyone was happy with their meal. At short notice, they accommodated our party of 14! All our meals arrived together, all were correct even those who had asked for changes to the advertised dish. One of our party has to avoid gluten and dairy and was delighted to find she had choices (very unusual for a local). All the party have said they will return independently and we have already booked our staff Christmas meal!

Really good location and very dog friendly but the manager / older members of staff were rude and very abrupt. Issue with parking, even though there’s no designated parking spaces in a very tight parking area due to the overflow parking area being too water logged. We were asked to move our car, even though we’d not parked anyone in and had parked according to the space of the area we were in. Tip: If you need to control parking in a specific way, then set out parking parameters so guests know how you want to optimize your parking area. Sunday menu is obviously focussed only on roasts, you’re absolutely stuffed if you want anything other than a roast. We had starters; breaded Brie, nachos, breaded mushrooms and vegan calamari, everything fried tasted like fish - makes you wonder if they’re using the same deep fat fryer for everything. The main meals were probably supermarket bought meals - the chicken korma was straight out of a microwave. The vegan burger was something I’ve bought myself out of Tesco & the scampi tasted like it was frozen and deep fried, and the mushroom pie all overdone. We didn’t bother with dessert…. Would probably have been deep fried whatever it was. The younger members of the front of house team were brilliant though & couldn’t have done more for us. The rest of the front of house team could take some lessons from them. TWO of our party of 4 have come back and had bad stomachs. Will never return again. Overall a very disappointing experience.

One of our favourite pubs in the area, and recently much improved by the addition of a beautiful outside seating area and the cute pods for that ‘indoors-outdoors’ vibe. The food is excellent - homemade, great quality, fresh ingredients and super tasty. The owner and her family are so friendly and welcoming, the place has a great atmosphere and caters for all needs, whether it’s a relaxed drink with friends, a cosy dinner date or a bigger social occasion. Highly recommend a visit, you won’t be disappointed

I visited The Oak with my mum after seeing it recommended on Facebook. It’s a lovely village pub - friendly staff, log fire burning, little fairy lights in the conservatory, wooden beams...everything you imagine a traditional village pub to look like! Obviously at the moment there’s hand sanitiser on entry and the QR code to sign in too. We ordered our food and sat chatting and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere (both of my children were at school so this was just what I needed!). Our food came and wow did it look good! Not only was there a “proper” portion of food on the plate but it tasted gooooood! We both said the chips were the best we’d eaten in a long time...possibly ever! My burger was huge but still juicy. Mum said her steak was perfect. We had chocolate orange tart for dessert and that was as good as it sounds! This place was a real find and I’ve already recommended it to a few people! We will be back!(I would definitely recommend booking too. We arrived at 12noon on a Friday and managed to get a table but by the time we left at just after 1.30pm it was quite busy with a lot of tables reserved or being used. Very popular place and I’m not surprised!)

Went for a family Sunday lunch, 6 of us. Firstly, the Covid QR code was available as soon as you got to the door and the signing in book was there also. My issue with the signing in book is everyone's telephone number was available for anyone to see, this is personal data that should be protected under the GDPR Act. but that is my only gripe. There was a large birthday party in at the same time and the staff were very busy. However, we were looked after really well and the service was very good. the food and drinks all came in a timely fashion, hot and very enjoyable. Portion size very good and good value for money. The ale was well looked after and the Tribute very nice. The new team in here have done a good job, the prices have been adjusted in the right way and there is no crazy £5.80 a pint. well done team. we will be going back here, it is very local to us and accepts dogs as well.

Received a leaflet through the door saying that The oak was offering a takeaway device due to covid 19, which living in the village thought was an amazing gesture, and also a way we can support our local pub . Looking at the menu, there was so much to choose from, obviously with limited opening times, but that wasn’t a problem. We decided to pre book for the Roast dinner for Sunday. We ordered 4 Roasts and a burger. Picked up our order all ready and packaged perfectly, I drove out to my mum who was in isolation due to age, dropped hers off and come back to eat mine... all I can say is wow!!! It’s was amazing, portion size was ample, as of writing this my chocolate brownie pudding is in the fridge for later... I’m stuffed!!! Stopped in for a quick lunch between jobs. As usual I opted for the fish and chips. Was served in good time and presented nicely. Although the presentation did make it difficult to eat. Serving peas in a small ramekin makes it impossible to eat, but if you tip them out onto the board they roll off! (Food served on a wooden board, not a rimmed plate)The batter on the fish was good and there were plenty of chips. Some tartare sauce would have been a nice addition. The pub itself was very nice, good ales on tap.

Get up to go buy another round of drinks from the bar to find that all the lights are off and doors locked at 9.50 pm. No last orders were called verbally or by the bell, no good night, nothing....just locked out!!!! How rude!! What a lack of professionalism!!!! If you can’t look after your customers, give up and move on to other horizons. Let someone else run this pub to bring it back to its glory days. Very disappointed.

The Oak is under new management and I wouldn’t be surprised if they lost all their customers! Everything that could go wrong did go wrong. We were giving the wrong menus and the waitress didn’t even know about items on the menu when we eventually got it. The landlady was incredibly rude and refused to give members of our party what they wanted, such as regular chips instead of sweet potato chips. Everything was a fight! However the worst part was that I found pieces of plastic in my food, clearly from where the meal had been microwaved from a packet. To their credit, I told them I wouldn’t be paying for my food which they accepted. But it really was an awful meal overall and very disappointing.

The Oak is not on a main road, it is tucked away in a small village, and it’s worth taking the trouble to find it. Behind the pub is a large car park, with garden tables and a small children’s play area. Inside there is a large bar with bar billiards, etc., a smaller dining area, and a function room. Part of the bar is childfree. This is very much a village pub that serves food, very good food. They serve a good range of beers, and there is a standard and a specials menu. The menus contain some interesting dishes, including quite a few vegetarian dishes. The staff are friendly, and helpful, we were not hurried. The kitchen serves very good tasting food, nicely presented. Some items are micro waved; but this is a village pub, not a city centre restaurant. Portions are generous, and whoever prepares the desserts has great style. Much of their food and drink comes from local suppliers. We will certainly be back here soon. They serve afternoon teas as well.

Nice traditional pub with a garden and playground. Well-decorated, too. However, when we visited as a group it was under-staffed and the Wadworths beers were not in good condition. My family and I went out for Sunday lunch and tried the "Oak" (royal oak, Smannel). We booked a table thinking Sunday would be busy. We had a choice of table as it was not overly busy. We ordered drinks at the bar was these were bought to our table. We were given menus and allowed sufficient time to make our decisions on what to eat. We all choose the roast though other traditional "pub-grub" on the menu for those looking for alternatives. The food was bought out on warm plates with veg, meat, roast potatoes all served on the plate (no separate vegetables), not an issue for us but a case you get what you are given whether you want it or not (perhaps a bit picky). Veg served separately seems to be the norm in other establishments and add what you wish to your own plate. Free wifi but sat in the conservatory my iPhone failed to pick up any wifi hotspot. Tables and bar area all very clean. Nice beer garden where food was also being served. Ample parking. Wheel access. Would go again for sure.

Actually went to this pub for a Wake. We had a private room at the back however, the pub itself is very quaint and the staff were so friendly and helpful. The food was lovely and we would definitely return under happier circumstances. My uncle is 80 next year and lives in Andover. I could definitetly see us all celebrating at this pub.

Lack of imagination and pub grub rather than fine dining limit the potential of the site and the building, and the atmosphere matches the rather dull staff. It could be so much better but good enough for that after work pint, and children at weekends

A very welcoming pub with a good kitchen serving a wide choice of well cooked meals. The Oak hosts a regular quiz night which is very popular and great fun.

Food has got better since the change. Waitress are the stars in the pub. Just wish the management took some of there friendly welcome, and stop looking like paying customer are a burden in there establishment.

Great food, it's certainly always best to book as this place gets quite busy. Car parking can sometimes be a bit tricky.

we ate here last Wednesday on a Groupon deal , we will most certainly return . The starters were ok but the stars were the mains, really good fish and chips and a truly tasty burger , I would go so far as to say it was the best I have tasted in Hampshire in a long while , great value all round. Cant wait for an excuse to return !

Looking on line for somewhere to go for a meal and liked the look of their menu . It was good wholesome food , nothing fancy but they offered a wide variety that covered meat eaters and non meat eaters alike. Booked a table and we arrived on time to be pleasantly welcomed by the bar staff. We were given time to peruse the menu and they had a specials menu as well which only made a choice more difficult ! The service was exemplary , and ensuring our drinks were replenished without the need to move from the table . The food was as good as I had hoped for .....portions were a good size .....you just need to ensure you have an appetite. Excellent value for money and recommend anyone wanting a meal in a quaint relaxed atmosphere. I am looking forward to going back to work my way through the menu !

Just want to thank all the staff working today (28/02/16), we had a private function consisting of 23 ladies in your conservatory area (baby shower), we booked in for the savoury and sweet afternoon tea which was FANTASTIC. Your staff were welcoming and very attentive throughout our function which lasted 3 and a half hours. Any requests were actioned quickly aka more sugar/milk etc and we couldn't believe the volume of food...! Definitely value for our money, we all left stuffed, took food home which made us very happy (left over cake at midnight is always ok right?!). I would highly recommend you to anyone else looking for an intimate private function and will definitely come back again. Thank you all

Excellent service, delicious food in a friendly atmosphere and sticky toffee pudding to die for!Although perfectly true, I have started with that sentence in case some people only read the opener of a review but what I really commend the owners and staff at The Oak for, is the service following a genuine mistake that happened with a booking in November 2015. This was completely rectified by the friendly, courteous, professional staff who more than compensated for an error which anyone could make.We have had no hesitation in booking twice since that visit in November 2015 and highly recommend The Oak.

A group of 22 of us dined at the Oak for our Christmas Lunch. We were all really impressed with our meals; the food was delivered promptly on arrival and staff even called out each of our names to identify the dish we had ordered. The food itself was excellent - I had the sea bass, which was cooked perfectly. The other mains looked good, while the sticky toffee pudding for dessert was a highlight! It was a shame we had no time (not to mention stomach capacity)for tea/coffee and mince pies, but had we stayed, I'm sure these would have been just as good as the rest of the meal. High-quality, home-cooked local food - what more could you ask for?!

We booked this venue for our daughters Christening as I was insistent on have afternoon tea! We had around 40 people in total and nothing was too much. The food was perfect and they kept an eye on us which meant no lack of tea or if we had a question they were never too far. Perfect day all in all. Can't fault them.

My mum booked a meal here as her brothers were coming to visit and it is close to where they are staying...She said she had been once before, but couldn't remember much about it... That has all changed When we arrived and were shown to our table, my uncle asked if we could be moved to an empty table near the fire as it's cold... After the girl went off to ask, another girl came over and said we could sit out in the conservatory (which I assume was also cold). My uncle asked if we could sit at the empty table near the fire and the girl said that would be fine (although she didn't look very happy about it)The first girl came and gave us our menus and took a drinks order... The drinks arrived and we realised there was a glass of water missing... When we asked for a glass of water, the barman did apologise and brought it straight over...We ordered 4 starters, 3 came out and we had to ask about the soup as it hadn't arrived... My dad and my auntie had the garlic mushrooms, my auntie said they weren't garlicky at all and my dad had a frozen mushroom. .. When he called the waitress over, she pulled it off his fork and went to walk off with it, he called her back and asked her to take them all and ask the chef to cook them...The mains arrived cold and my mum found a hair in her cottage pie At no point (besides the barman) did anyone apologise for the appalling service and standard of the food...Really dissapointing and I would not recommend to anybody... Neither would my family... Although we did laugh about it when we got home

We have eaten here many times as a family. Staff are consistently friendly and attentive without being overbearing. Food is very good with sizable portions. In fact my wife and I on a recent visit had only starters and desert (I had the Camembert) , very filling, hit just the spot.Kids meals are excellent value and they offer a good choice. Tom and Victoria do an excellent job of setting a really nice, non invasive atmosphere, with well trained staff.Their steak is delicious, and better than a local gourmet restaurant we visited just a week later.Long may it continue!

The hotel has no AC in the rooms, and actually they have no running ventilation in the sleeping area, just the bathroom. Speaking of area, the area around the hotel is tragic. On the plus side the pizza is delicious and the drafted beer is cold and cheap. Parking is free. The mood and the competence of the crew varies a lot.

The quintessential English village hotel, but better! Decor and food very good

Potatoes were so over cooked they were hard, the portion of beef was awful, tiny slices of very rare and hard to cut through as it was not cooked.

A cut above the usual pub grub place. Food is of a high standard and service first rate. Recommend the garlic pizette and the onion rings.
