My children booked for Mother’s Day, we pre ordered as we knew it would be very busy. We arrived slightly earlier than our time slot (5pm), we were advised on arrival that food was running approximately 60 mins late due to having major issues with the electric tripping all day which obviously had a huge knock on effect to the cooking and service delivery. The staff were doing their best in a totally unforeseen situation. We were seated just prior to our booked time and drinks orders were taken, some of us decided to go to the bar as the waiting staff were snowed under and this was not a problem for us. We were a party of 11 so the drinks order would likely have taken a while. In all honestly we did wait for around 30 minutes prior to our first course to arrive, however, due to the issues we were aware and this did not phase us. I have seen some negative reviews for Mother’s Day and can honestly say our food was amazing, the team ensured we were kept informed of when our food/drinks (for those that ordered to the table) would arrive. The food was amazing, hot, tasting delicious and great portion sizes. Charlotte and team, well done to you all on what must have been an absolutely stressful day. Despite negative reviews, there was not an empty seat or table in the pub, on the patio out front or across the road where your outside/garden tables are situated. Thank you as always for a great service ☺️

Love this place been coming here since I was a nipper back in the day when it was the Amport Inn. Cracking location, lovely old pub. But something has changed!? The staff were trying their best and the food was on point when it arrived. But we waited ninety minutes for our food to turn up, we were cool no dramas we understand coming from a hospitality background. But we had to go to the bar to get our own drinks and over heard some people waiting over two hours for their food. Like I said the team were at full capacity and it was Mothering Sunday so yeah we get it, people were still coming in and getting seated. We later over heard that the booking system is out sourced, ie you ring and book or book online you’re not actually talking to the pub staff. The pub was over booked and the kitchen was under too much pressure!! Upham Inns, what would you rather have, two hundred covers and lots of unhappy customers and your team having to give discounts left right and center or one hundred and fifty/sixty covers and happy customers that are going to come back? Plus it’s not fair on your team, they were at breaking point!! Please listen to you customers (there are plenty of similar reviews) and to your staff. Like I said grate food in the end and we appreciated the staff. All the best to the manager for trying her utmost to keep everyone happy 🙏🏻

This is the second time of trying the Sunday roast and both times the food has been amazing but the service has let the place down. First time it was busy and we ordered a starter and main and then waited about 40 mins for the starter(olives and breads) and then a further hour for the mains 2 Sunday roasts but thought as it was busy I'd give them the benefit of the doubt. The second time I'd booked a bit earlier 1pm as I thought it would be better....... ooh boy was I wrong. After giving our drinks and food order( no starters this time) we sat waiting 20mins for drinks to finally arrive and we'd finished them and was joking about it always takes a hour to serve food when one of the waiting staff came over as they'd lost our order and would have to start again.... a long story short but we didn't leave till gone 5 after our Sunday roast for 3 and 3 desserts (in 4 hours). And they still put on the obligatory tip which I thought was a bit of a cheek considering we'd been there since 1.i wasn't expecting fast food but service could be better. Food excellent quality and taste but service letting everything down

Booked for 4 of us with 2 dogs to have lunch. Menu looked good online and we were very much looking forward to it. We are seated in the back next to a walkway, which was fine if not ideal with two spaniels who like to say hello to everyone. After around 10 minutes a gentleman came to take drink orders. He seemed a little flustered and also told us to keep the dogs away from him as he had a dog allergy, which questions why a pub that pushes the fact they are dog friendly would get someone to wait on the table with dogs.. Ordered two pints of cider to be told there was no draft cider, which happens. He then didn’t know what bottled cider there was and went to the bar and came back with a choice of one fruit cider. I never checked if there any proper ciders myself and we just ordered 2 lagers. There was also a cocktail ordered and a Coke. He took the order, returned a few minutes later to let us know they didn’t have the ingredients for the cocktail. Another cocktail was ordered that they could apparently make. Slightly unfortunate that when the cocktail arrived, it tasted nothing like it should and was mainly water. The drink was remade in another glass so no harm done. While looking at the menu, it became clear that the online pdf was different from the menu in the pub. We eventually order and then waited around 40 mins for our food, the pub was busy so no problem with that. When the food arrived the presentation was underwhelming to say the least. Scampi was warm at best, eggs had been cooked in too hot oil resulting in burned bottoms and gloopy tops, burger buns were burned on the inside. It was edible, we were hungry and to be honest, just wanted to eat and go. When someone came to clear the table we were asked if everything was ok, just about to discuss what wasn’t ok but the server disappeared with the plates before we could speak. £120 for basic badly cooked food, poor service and not the greatest environment. Suffice to say we will not be returning. What makes it a little sad is we had breakfast here a few months ago and it was lovely. It may have been that they were just too busy and couldn’t cope. Not a great experience.

We visited the Hawk yesterday to celebrate a friend's retirement and after recommending the Hawk as an excellent place for a meal and service I was left very disappointed with the customer service, the attitude of the staff and the quality of the food. We waited 45 minutes to get a drinks order and when we said how thirsty we were to lighten the mood the response from the bar manager was "so am I" no apology or any form of explanation. We then waited a further 30 minutes to get our food order taken, a further 30 minutes for our starters to arrive and after over 2hrs we received our main meals. Again no apology from the rude food server, no explanation just poor attitude. There was a new starter on day one of her new job role who was the only one in the pub with any empathy to the poor poor service. The food once arrived was below the usual standards and our friend who was Veegan was told that his pie was "ham" although this was corrected, he was sure there was meat based gravy on his plate. All served and corrected, again with no apology. Our friend who lives in the village was left embarrassed by this entirely unacceptable experience, with absolutely no remorse from the rude food server or bar manager. Such a shame as the Hawk was always at the top of my list to visit. Stay away if this team is working !!!!

Went with the family to celebrate a birthday, unfortunately wish we hadn't. Have been coming here for quite a few years and each time it seems to be worse than the previous time. The beef that we were given was so tough it was a struggle to cut and one guest had a long dark hair in the food, so got sent back. The only redeeming factor was the young lady serving us was very sweet, professional and very apologetic. Having read rave reviews about the food here I was looking forward to lunch. However, I was very disappointed with the quality of food and the prices - £17 for a hard vegetarian flatbread covered in an unpleasant sauce from a jar, a couple of bits of beetroot and a massive pile of lettuce. It was not good so I left most of it. My companion's chicken burger was slightly better but nothing special and a small portion for the price. Chips were nice. Service was slow but OK. Loads of noisy kids around. Won't be back which is a shame as the setting is lovely.

My husband and I booked a table 2pm on 27/12/2024 after our daughter and her boyfriend stayed there in 2022 and had a lovely experience. Unfortunately ours was not, it was very busy and on arrival we were taken to our table and didn't see a waitress again for a further 25 minutes. Our order was taken and we waited, when my veggie burger and my husbands meat burger arrived we were both surprised at how sml the brioche buns were, it looked more like a childs size meal. The veggie burger was very unimaginative and wasn't even that tasty, I left half of it. 5/10 from me. Definitely not worth £16. Hubby said his burger was ok but not great. 7/10 from him. Definitely not worth nearly £20. Halfway through our meal we asked for another pint for my husband, 30 mins later when we were ready to leave it still hadn't arrived but was on the bill when we asked for it, also I had a tiny splash of lemonade in my sml white wine yet I was charged for half a pint. Needless to say we shant be returning. Shame as nicely decorated and a lovely village setting.

Awful slow service every time I have visited (maybe 5 times in the past 2 years), the food is good which is why I have been back however I booked here for a Christmas meal and our order was never put through. After 1.15 hours I queried where are food was to be told the server did not put it through the system. I was advised the manager will be over to speak to us but never turned up, we then had to ask another 3 times if our food was coming, we arrived at 7.15pm and our food arrived at 9pm. Staff at the bar were more bothered about their conversation than helping our situation which normal here. Feedback is apparently given to staff but each time I go the service is terrible, I will also try to support local business and give a lot of chances as due to the climate I feel this is important however I wont be visiting or recommending anymore. My mother in law also attended this week and said how poor the food was and the service was again awful. I'd recommend actually speaking with the manager, if she had come over, apologised, offered something to tide us over we wouldn't have thought anything of it. At least the mishap was trying to be rectified but nothing, just ignored us. Real shame.

Christmas dinner with friends at The Hawk after hearing great reviews, Our experience was slightly different, too busy too noisy and the food was below standard. Roast turkey dinner consisted of 3 brussels sprouts, anemic parsnips, 3 soggy roast potatoes, a slice of hard stuffing, greasy dripping Yorkshire pudding and dry turkey served with non existing gravy, no extra on the side. Cauliflower cheese ordered as a side, was missing cheese, hard and totally bland. Service was very slow, which is understandable considering that they had clearly over booked the restaurant and therefore the quality and the delivery of the food suffered. The food was served was of the same quality I would expect in a cheap chain pub. I will not be visiting this pub again . If you are there on Christmas Day, good luck!

We recently dined at this pub, and while it looks a nice place to be in the service was incredibly disappointing. The waitresses seemed more interested in discussing their breaks than actually doing their jobs. We had to ask multiple times just to place our order, and even getting the bill was a hassle – something you wouldn’t expect from a pub that appears so inviting. The waiting time was painfully slow, and there was a general lack of attention to the customers. It’s a shame because the pub itself was lovely looking, but the service really lets it down.

There were profuse apologies from the waiting staff and we also heard apologies for the table behind us but they were offered a free desert as well (no such offer to us). My dissatisfaction was compounded by the fact that a service charge was then still added to our bill (my fault to not query it as I didn’t have my reading glasses on & just assumed I could leave a cash tip at the table if I wished to). That said, the food was nice when it arrived and there was plenty of it (chicken slouvaki and scampi and chips) so would recommend on the food side but the service could be improved.

Reported to manager who spoke to them but as soon as staff went home they turned their TV volume right up & wouldn't answer their door when I knocked it.

We came here as a group for snacks and drinks after a long day, one of the bar staff Corrie was absolutely phenomenal at his job, really friendly and welcoming a constant smile on his face and overall a happy chappy!! Really impressed by the hawk inn and will solely be coming back because of his amazing customer service. Well done guys! You’ve hired the right people ☺️

Indifferent Service without a hint of a smile from staff who have clearly not been trained or managed properly. Badly kept beer, incorrectly made cocktail, absolutely awful food - Dry chicken, a few leaves of Iceberg Lettuce and a bit of onion for a "House Salad", Kofta's that were dry and clearly from Tesco's cheap BBQ range. And all massively overpriced! I can honestly say that this one of thE WORST EXPERIENCES we have had for a long time.

Came for a special birthday meal, food great. Girls are friendly. Service slow. Bill presented to us initially was completely wrong. We were honest it was wrong and took forever to get revised Bill. Would expect better with how much you charge for a Roast.

A great place to stay. The room was very nice. The food was nice as well, there is room for improvement on the welcome service and the waiting times for the food. We did get a great deal using the discounts for kids and cocktail happy hour. There's on site parking available, suited for large vehicles.

Great menu - lots of things we liked making it hard to choose. So good to get beyond pub classics. And the food was delicious, as was coffee, though the latter was not v hot. We didn't stay overnight - just a pub lunch

We attended for a wedding. The venue was very pretty and the location is picturesque. The staff were lovely, and the evening meal was delicious, I can highly recommend the Beef Wellington. The drinks are a little on pricey side though. We didn't stay at the hotel but I'm told the rooms were nice. Will visit again when in the area.

Booked in for a family lunch on Easter Saturday... well - that was a waste of time and effort! Waited for 2 Calamari starters (despite reminders to the waitress) - they eventually arrived not only cold but totally inedible they were like stringy pieces of leather. We were never asked if more drinks were required - had to venture to the bar to order drinks. Fed up we requested the manager - no-one available... the pub had been left with (what appeared to be) inexperienced, unqualified staff who couldn't/wouldn't take responsibility. On a seperate issue the lavatories fell way, way below par - both gents urinals had black bin bags over them and the floors were badly stained. Needless to say after having a small moan to the young waitress we walked... In closing I will say we have eaten here before and it was alright - hence why we booked. On this latest visit shouldn't think we will return....

Enjoyed the ambiance, cleanliness and the friendliness of the landlord(?) but the quality of the food wasn't great. Although i only had ham, egg and chips; the ham was quite tough and fatty and the eggs were overcooked.

The service was slightly slow and we had to ask for allergy menus when staff were aware of allergens in our party. Food was nice although could be a bit hotter. I think it was a busy time and an extra member of staff would have helped with better service.

We booked a table and paid the £15 deposit on mother's day. On our arrival there was no place to park so we had to wait for someone to leave in order to park in their space. Getting inside with a pushchair it was a mission as well. When we asked about our table we've been told is taken by some other people and we have to wait for them to leave. Just to make it clear this people were only having drinks. After 20 min we manage to get our table just to realise there were no chairs and no highchairs were available. My partner had to grab one chair from a different table. We had to go to the bar to order our food and drinks because nobody came around to take our order. Food was OK but definitely not worth £17. Portion was really small( 2 pieces of potatoes, 2 pieces of carrot and 2 pieces of parsnip) For dessert I ordered waffle ( again the order was placed at the bar) which was cold and chewy. Again not worth £10 Also the table next to us complained about the portion sizes.

We came for a birthday meal after family members raved about the place. Unfortunately we were left disappointed with our visit. We arrived and walked through the bar (stared at as we did by what we presume were regulars) greeted and shown to our table. The whole place was busy. We ordered our drinks and then food. We waited a while for our starters and then a while for our mains. We ordered more drinks after our starters and these arrived as we finished our mains. The food was mediocre. Houmous not homemade, mash was like the stuff you get pre made in a supermarket, the steak was tough, the coleslaw was awful and the truffle and parmesan fries just one big lump. We asked for the bill to find that the large white wine was charged at the most expensive glass on the menu! We paid and left, again stared at as we made out way to the exit. We won't be returning anytime soon and feel like we wasted £170!

I have been going to the Hawk on and off for years. Usually excellent but yesterday popped in for a quick lunch with my father. A simple order took well over an hour. Same for others. Busy but not massively so. They were clearly short staffed. Staff were gracious but not a great experience. Need to warn customers.

Heidi and Colin are great hosts at the helm of a true village gem! Our third visit for dinner and it was as perfect as the first. The atmosphere is always relaxed and welcoming—just the right mix of cosy and lively. It’s the kind of place where you feel comfortable straight away. They’ve a great selection or drinks and the pints go down too easily. The food was spot on too with a great variety to suit all palates and different specials every time. Each time we’ve visited, we’ve all opted for something different — and every single dish has been packed with flavour, cooked perfectly, and served in generous portions. Definitely good value for money. Last night we happened to go on quiz night, which was a great laugh. The questions were a good mix—some tricky, some funny—and the host kept things moving nicely. Friendly competition without it feeling too serious. The locals are also stars of the show while the staff were brilliant—friendly, quick to help, and always smiling. Nothing is too much trouble here. You can tell they enjoy what they do, which really adds to the whole experience. All in all, a fantastic spot that keeps us coming back. Highly recommended—whether you’re local or just passing through, it’s well worth a visit.

Absolutely Brilliant Night at the Chesnut! I've been coming to this pub for a while, and the difference under the new management is incredible. The atmosphere is better than ever, the staff are friendly and attentive, and the service has improved massively over the past couple of months. I was especially impressed by the charity DJ battle they hosted recently—what a fantastic event! Great energy, a fun crowd, and all for a good cause. It’s clear the new team really cares about building a welcoming community vibe. I’m looking forward to bringing my family to another event soon!
