We only went for lunch and we both decided to have the ribeye steak medium rare with chips. At £27 (now £34) a head we expected a decent steak but were very disapointed, it was tough, the waitress said she would tell the chef. They also add a 10% tip! A gratuity should be given for good service not just added to the bill.

Son had his wedding blessing here, together with bridal breakfast, evening reception and breakfast following day (hired several of the cottages as well as rooms in the main hotel - they couldn't be faulted.) Food was exceptional, so full from the breakfast ( huge home made burgers, chicken breast and BBQ with sides that beat anything I'd had in my previous 60 years), bars in events venue and main hotel, care from staff couldn't be faulted. With a walk through the gardens to the river at the end so see the broads boats go by while enjoying the sun, prior to the evening events. Guests enjoyed the more lively evening when the sound system was cranked up, before those who had to make their way to other places started leaving. Following morning breakfast was more than ample to get through to evening, a buffet bar plus cooked to order menus, full English was good, or a mountain of scrambled egg on toast with a thick large sliver of salmon as the roof. Highly recommend

Went for afternoon tea to celebrate my husband’s birthday and our wedding anniversary. The food was ok, but not inspiring. Mediocre sandwiches, with lack of cress in egg sandwiches. Scones were pleasant but a lack of fruit in fruit scones. Panacotta was just cream with one blueberry on top. Other cakes were just plain and chocolate sponges, and very small. Coffee was good. Our main complaint was The lack of disabled facilities, although advertised as present. No disabled parking and 3 builders vans were taking up space. Even a member of the office staff was parked in the small car park. We had to park in the overflow to the overflow car park which was 4-500 metres from the entrance. If our tea had not already been paid for we would not have stayed. We are both disabled and find it difficult to walk. The ground was muddy and too uneven to use our wheelchairs On entering the building we had to go to the far side of the reception area, which was dark and negotiate two steps down on a dark floor with no safety markings. Then along a corridor and down 2 more steep steps into the dining area. No help was offered and in fact, staff laughed when we said it had been a struggle to get there.

We booked the Gala Dinner for New Years Eve, after going to many different hotels for New Years Eve Gala Dinners, for many years in the past, all of which have been brilliant Gala evenings, this was bitterly disappointing, and I would not recommend at all, if what you are expecting is what all other hotels that we've been to offer as a Gala Dinner, firstly I must say we arrived at 7 as our taxi was late so missed a prosecco and meeting the other guests which started at 6.30, so we missed the first half an hour, when we arrived we we're expecting a Gala Dinner as advertised, by definition a big room with lots of tables with mixed guests and a party atmosphere, with balloons, streamers general decoration and entertainment, just like every New Years eve gala we've been too, we all dressed for a Gala as advertised, we were then led straight to our table, again we were a little late so that's fine, we were in a small room of 4 other tables which I think had 4 people each, absolutely no decoration at all, no indication it was New Years Eve, there was some music playing, so quietly that we could hardly hear it, I have to say the food was excellent, no issue there, but we sat in that small room until just after 11 o'clock, there was some music in another room that we then could have walked too, but the reason we booked a Gala was to be able to dance and then sit at our table if we wanted too, just like every other Gala, by this time my Mum who flew home from Spain especially for this evening, was so disappointed she asked me to bring her taxi forward to 11.45 as she was so looking forward to a Gala like we normally love, and we left at just before 12 for the same reason, seeing the New Year in the Taxi, and bitterly disappointed, If you are expecting a Gala evening do not book here, the evening for 4 of us cost me £ 640, I've just spoken to the hotel Manager Josh, and again I've been very disappointed with the call, when I told him it ruined our New Years Eve his response was " well actually I didn't have a very good New Years Eve and was in bed before 12 " it was a very unprofessional call, so much so I asked if he was actually the manager !! The hotel will respond with, we arrived a little bit late so missed the first 30 minutes of the Gala experience and was welcome to join the other venue to dance at 11.20 and there was fireworks at 12.30, fair enough, but if the Hotel believes that sitting at a table in a small room with no atmosphere, decoration or entertainment, for over 4 hours, is a Gala evening, especially the biggest night of the year, I suggest they visit what other Hotel New Year Gala evenings are, or remove the work Gala from their advertising for this event, needless to say I would not recommend this Gala evening, and will certainly not return, especially after tonight supposedly follow up call with Josh, I hope the owners James and Ana see this honest review, an take on board 4 very disappointed customers experience in their Hotel.

So disappointed with our visit to the Norfolk Mead Hotel at Coltishall last night. The Mead has been a favourite and frequently visited restaurant over the years but the menu has been altered to a more brassiere style offering and no longer the fine dining experience with each dish bringing different flavours and textures to enhance the main elements. Chips and dips seemed an odd vegetable option. The menu restyling bears no remembrance to the website sample. Last night's menu displayed different courses that are now titled as First,Seconds instead of starters and main course and Thirds instead of desserts., more akin to a school menu. Previously, upon arrival you were greeted as welcome guests and given delicious cheese straws and olives as an amuse bouche whilst ordering from the menu. No longer. Now you can order a small dinner roll @£5 and olives all at a separate price. Similarly, a roll and butter used to be offered during your meal, it still is but at a cost of £5! Unfortunately The Mead has dumbed down from the unique menu options to similar food and presentations that are available to the other eating venues in the village. Such a shame. On a plus, the service was good unlike the new styled menu. Unfortunately its no better than "average"

In spite of being only a 20 minute drive from this characterful country house hotel our last visit was about 20 years ago. We will not leave it too long till we visit again. The dining room is light and airy with views over the extensive grounds, and all necessary social distancing was well observed, from NHS app check in to single use menus etc. We were very impressed by the young and upbeat staff, combining friendliness and professionalism perfectly. We’re not great “food warriors”, but it was nice to try Black Shuck gin, a dog’s name familiar to anyone in Norfolk - though hopefully not encountered on a misty coastal road !The food was exceptional- starters and desserts combined at least six elements each with great contrasts of flavour and texture. My pigeon breast was very tender and my wife’s prawn and crayfish stack reinvented the “prawn cocktail “, a mass of prawns and crayfish with a minimal amount of dressing to hold it together! And the main courses were everything you expect from a traditional Sunday lunch, a “mound” of delicious vegetables, gravy and perfectly tender meat. We enjoy our food, but the quantities were so generous we doggy bagged a portion which on our return home passed the “Labrador” test - hope the chef doesn’t mind.Would happily rate this meal 5+

The Norfolk Mead is a lovely venue, no question. Today’s visit was good, apart from one officious waitress. A lecture (about protecting the table) was delivered at a volume sufficient for guests in the next room to hear. Thankfully none of our party was of a nervous disposition. Other member of staff, well he was great - nothing too much trouble. Sadly, the waitress was reception as we settled up - wrongly in her view - and again, loudly. Had we not known we were right, her tone could have made us all feel quite embarrassed. Maybe some training is required.

Our food contained flavours and textures we'd never experienced before and we were absolutely blown away by how incredible it was. We had to park in the overflow car park so I knew it was going to be busy and so it proved to be. When we arrived at reception they only had us down as a party of 2 rather than 3 which I'd booked, so they had to relay the table, which took a while as they were so busy. We choose our tea blend and the afternoon tea arrived quickly. The sandwiches were filed with quality ingredients as you’d expect here, they were fresh and tasty. On Saturday night, my partner and I went for a meal at The Norfolk Mead Hotel for an anniversary dinner and it was wonderful, from start to finish! My partner made the booking and due to the changes in Covid-19 guidelines, our booking needed to be moved forwards for the restaurant to accommodate all guests. They called and made sure that this was ok, which it was. They also called the day before the booking to check that we were still ok to attend and also on the day, to advise us that the journey there may take longer, due to poor weather and fallen trees. This was above and beyond what was expected. When we arrived, we were shown straight to our tables and brought canapés, which were delicious! We placed our orders, from a menu full of flavoursome sounding dishes. All of our dishes arrived in a timely manner and were utterly delectable. Everything was cooked to an outstanding standard and the flavours were enjoyed by every tastebud! All staff followed the Covid procedures to a high standard and were incredibly attentive. We enjoyed it so much that we plan to revisit and stay at the hotel as we felt so welcome and enjoyed every minute of our evening.

A very warm welcome awaits you here from all the staff. This is not happenstance but careful selection and training. All the people serving food engaged you in a friendly and interested way. This ambience is added to by the wonderful architecture of the building. The dinner menu of 2 or 3 courses is good value, especially given the complexity of some of the dishes. And there is the rub. This is a talented chef who understands ingredients but for us erred on the side of over inclusive. Too many different flavours and elements in the dishes. Dialled back a tad and this chef could do truly great plates. The home made bread was very good and the home made butter a nice touch, but would be better still without the trace of added Marmite. The scallops and pea and ham purée stunning , but the rape seed tartare not needed and just wasn’t nice. The roast tomatoe and courgette soup under seasoned, compensated for by the fried halloumi but with the lentils also in the soup, left a bitter after taste. The main of cod loin cooked perfectly and the fennel veloute , lemon gnocchi , star anise carrots all worked brilliantly - the roast cauliflower purée detracting rather than adding. The fillet steak with roast onion purée , Stilton croquette , celeriac , beetroot and cabbage with port jus was collectively excellent. We couldn’t make dessert - too full. They looked very enticing. So, a very good meal, we would return, and the comments are meant in a constructive spirit since we left feeling this was a chef with much more to give by doing less.

I booked Afternoon Tea as a treat for myself and my partner during August. We hadn't visited before and had heard and read very good things, so had high expectations... On arrival, the hotel was busy, but good social distancing and COVID measures in place. From what we saw of the public hotel areas and the walled garden, it was all very nicely maintained. The main restaurant looked lovely too, as did the small bar area. We were shown through to a small side room, which was also occupied by 6 ladies (clearly not from just 2 households as regulations state). This particular room was quite drab, with no atmosphere whatsoever, even some background music would have made a little improvement. We were given a tea menu and our waiter went away, returning a few minutes later with our afternoon tea stand and then asked us what tea we would like... Quite an odd way round to serve afternoon tea in my opinion. We had to ask if a glass of Prosecco was an option as it wasn't either offered by our server or indicated on the menu. I fully appreciate that this is a busy hotel, which undoubtedly caters for a huge volume of afternoon teas, but the attention to detail just wasn't there. The sandwiches were nice, the bread was fresh. The scones were very average. There were 2 per person... plain and fruit, one of our fruit scones had just 1 sultana in. The jam appeared to be of an inferior quality, very runny and quite tasteless. The brownie was delicious, but the lemon drizzle cake was dry and decorated with what can only be described as a 'slug' of lemon curd and a few hundreds and thousands. Vastly better afternoon teas available for the money. Not once were we checked on. Overall, very disappointing. I would have returned for lunch / evening meal, but after our experience, I will be going elsewhere.

This was our first night out and away from the children since lockdown and we decided to treat ourselves for our wedding anniversary. We have been to a couple of evening functions here in the past but never stayed or eaten here. We had very limited time and live only 30 minutes away but always thought it looked lovely. And it was. It is a beautifully presented and maintained building and our room was stunning. Also a gorgeous setting right on the river. We had dinner and breakfast and both meals were delicious, we will definitely come back in the future for dinner. One of the best things to mention however, has to be the staff. The staff of a hotel can make or break the place and these make it. A young staff ( I doubt we saw anyone over 30!) but even with all the Covid restrictions and masks etc they were, without exception, friendly and helpful. A special mention for Liam who checked us in and showed us to our room, starting our stay off with such positivity! We are lucky to have such a gem so close to home.

We have previously stayed twice at the Norfolk Mead before moving to Norfolk, and loved our stays there. So when the opportunity came to have a birthday afternoon tea, it was a natural choice. I phoned ahead to book for 2 people, and specifically asked whether I could replace tea with a soft drink as I don’t drink tea/coffee, and also if they could make the sandwich selection non-fish. Not a problem – for the former talk to your server, and for the latter “we’ve made a note”.Well, on the day, firstly we couldn’t enter the hotel without wearing a mask. We hadn’t been advised of this when booking but fortunately had masks in the car. Maybe something to do with it being a hotel not a restaurant? Staff were wearing masks, but we saw some being pulled down whilst they chatted with each other. A mask was also needed when it came to payment, as you had to walk back through the hotel to pay at reception – not sure why contactless payment couldn’t be taken at the table, to minimise exposure. On being welcomed, they had recorded our booking as a 4, not a 2. OK – not a problem, and we were escorted to a table for 2 in the dining room. When our tea order was taken, I asked about the switch to a soft drink, and was advised there would be a charge. I said that I had asked about this on booking, so the server had to go and check with management. Came back to say I could have the first soft drink ‘on the house’, but a 2nd one would be charged. OK – seemed fair, although not impressed at mixed messages. Our afternoon tea arrived – with smoked salmon sandwiches. When I pointed out that I had requested a ‘no fish’ offering, again it was not a problem, and alternatives provided. For all the glitches above, they were handled quickly & professionally by the individual servers – BUT, at a hotel marketing itself as a cut above the norm, they shouldn’t have occurred. Especially as I took the trouble to check ahead on the booking numbers/drinks/fish. The food was nice – lovely sandwiches and cakes, although scones perhaps a little dry and very runny jam (if I am being picky). Good value too, as fortuitously our booking was covered by the Eat Out Scheme - not planned!Overall however, a disappointing return, and it all seemed a little bit shambolic with no-one apparently overseeing the service. So overall a 2.5* rounded up to 3* based on goodwill from prior visits.P.S. Would have liked to add a * for the amazing sight of a sparrow hawk dismembering an unfortunate pigeon on driveway verge as we left, but suspect that the hotel can't take credit for that!

Considering the fact they have only just opened still charging for early check in seemed a little unreasonable as did an additional £5 room service charge for ordering room service. You have to pre book room service before 9 which seems a little odd as how do you know what you fancy to eat between then and 11pm but each to their own. The little launch was a lovely way to spend the afternoon up and down the river. Restaurant was expensive and the food wasn’t that great. The sandwiches, sausage roll, scones and cakes were superb. I would highly recommend this. Well done to the Mead for adapting in these crazy times. Thank you so much.

We had a delicious afternoon tea delivered by Norfolk Mead for a birthday treat. Finger sandwiches, sausage rolls, scones, cream and jam and a selection of pastries! They even provided milk to go with the tea and coffee! My husband and I really enjoyed it and would highly recommend it. We look forward to returning to Norfolk Mead when it re-opens!

Not a visit but the delivery of a wonderful afternoon tea under lockdown. Easy to order, smiley and friendly delivery observing social distancing and the food was to die for. My daughter's veggie option was just as good as my standard tea. Will definitely be treating ourselves again. Thanks so much

This is my second Norfolk Mead review. After our perfect wedding there 3 years ago, we like to return when we can for dinners/lunches with our family (with it being my Mum’s absolute favourite restaurant). During the lockdown, my parents, like many over 70s, decided to fully isolate. When I read that The Mead were offering delivery of their afternoon tea, I quickly booked one for my parents (and I may have also included one each for myself and my husband). They were delivered on Saturday and they were absolutely perfect. The sandwiches were so fresh and full of delicious fillings. There was a sausage roll, a plain scone and a fruit scone. The ‘top layer’ was a delight and included Anna’s famous brownie. The presentation was extremely thoughtful with coffee, tea pigs tea bags and a miniature bottle of milk included. Thank you for such a lovely treat during these times. Mum was overjoyed with hers and really appreciated your efforts. We look forward to seeing you again when we can.

Yesterday I had a delivery of afternoon tea for 2, the presentation and contents was superb, everything was fresh, and very tasty, I love the fine details of the little box with ribbon, saying thank you, containing tea bag, they even sent a tiny bottle of fresh milk. We loved it so much, I’m sharing another one next week with a friend.I can certainly say you will not be disappointed.

For the price of the set dinner menu, one would expect a reasonable meal but dinner surpassed our expectations. The food was delicious, well presented, freshly cooked and served with a smile. The wines too were excellent and reasonably priced. We also had a round of sandwiches in the bar and those too were excellent. Fresh bread with generous fillings and nicely presented. All in all, two lovely meals in an equally lovely hotel!

Lovely setting but rather disappointed by afternoon tea - had called ahead to ask for a substitute for one of the items and was given a rather small green cube of kiwi fruit jelly??? Not what we were expecting. We had to go and find staff to top up milk and tea - not what we had hoped for in terms of service or value for money.

The menu is very different to most restaurants and they pride themselves on sourcing most ingredients locally. Its quite expensive but definitely worth pushing the boat out for a special occasion.

Tried this place due to business in the area. Wow what a find awesome -StaffGroundsFoodAccommodationWhat’s not to like? This is a little gem we stayed in one of the chalet apartments called “ Beachnut” really nice although crazy hot once we turned off everything went to dinner it was cool on our return. Already planning a return especially if we get the deal we had on this overnight stayI have to say tho the staff who are employed have bought into this place and are a credit usually this is a let down but I can say they were incredibly professional and main applause goes to all of them

We came to the Norfolk Mead for a surprise evening get together for a friends 21st birthday, and it was exceptional! We were placed in the Georgian room which was a private dining room just off the main restaurant and it was the perfect setting for the occasion! The staff were honestly amazing, nothing was too much trouble for them. However the food was incredible!! It was beautifully presented, well executed and every element on the plate had its own profile but putting them all together just made it magic! Will most certainly be returning to The Norfolk Mead very soon!

If TripAdvisor is there to advise then I should start by saying that the Norfolk Mead is a full 5 stars for dinner - well worth a visit.Their treatment rooms are also first rate, with highly professional staff and high quality products. Always left feeling fully pampered and this time was no exception. Unfortunately, the afternoon tea doesn't hit the mark. The food is OK but lacks the originality and presentation of competitors like the Assembly House. Likewise the small lounge area lacks the splendour of many other venues. The Norfolk Mead does many things incredibly well but their afternoon tea doesn't t reach their own high standards.

We enjoyed a one night stay at this delightful hotel as a treat for our pearl wedding anniversary. From the moment we arrived the staff made us feel very welcome and we immediately felt relaxed. We were looked after mainly by Danni and Alec who both worked together extremely well and, being a small hotel, they were excellent at multi-tasking from checking us in to serving our drinks, afternoon tea and dinner in the restaurant. They are both great at anticipating the guest's needs and are a credit to the hotel.

We visited for the twilight spa session and dinner. The first rate facial and massage set the bar high but the restaurant experience completed a perfect visit. From the service to the presentation to the little touches of originality in the dishes this was astonishingly good. We both rated it as the best meal we had eaten in Norfolk in several years, teaching all the better known fine dining establishments a thing or two.

Our first visit under the new ownership and we were very impressed by the high standards met by all staff we encountered. All were very welcoming and informative at all times. The meal was exceptional and equally on a par with the best in Norwich, such as Benedicts. The detailed menu sets out the variety of ingredients in each dish and they all combine to enhance the texture and flavours of the main item.

Went on Halloween for supper and bought a lamb diner kebab and a chicken gyros. While taking them back to my table I managed to spill both kebabs. The owner and the manager both immediately sprang into action, organised the cleaning and immediately ordered two more kebabs without any hesitation when it was completely my own fault. It was very much appreciated. The pub has put a premium on service and it shows. The staff had made a real effort for Halloween and the kids were thoroughly enjoying their outing.
