Teignmouth has more than its fair share of boozers, really good to see when many pubs are closing down. This is a no-nonsense pub, right on the harbourside (and I mean RIGHT on the harbourside!). Bet it's lovely to sit outside on a sunny day. We were there on a rainy February night, and there was a band just warming up ready to play. Friendly bar staff. Cheap drinks.

Our visits to Teignmouth often involve a walk along the seafront and ending at the Back Beach, with time for a drink or two before the train home. It is a lovely spot to sit outside with a pint to watch activity on the Teign, and is clearly very popular with the locals.

We only had drinks at this pub, however they were lovely and at a very decent price. The pub itself has a great outside seating area on a smaller beach with great views beyond, it is absolutely the preferred place for a pint in Shaldon! The staff behind the bar were all lovely and very accommodating.

This pub has a brilliant outdoor area with benches overlooking the estuary, but it was a bit cold when we went, but they have seats right in the window so you still get the amazing views. I love a good Guinness and have to say they do pour a decent Guinness! Negative, the means toilets are absolutely vile, need a very good clean, need the toilet seat replaced as well, I was particularly disgusted as I was with my younger daughter so had to take her in the men’s to pee, I didn’t know whether to wash her hands or dowse her in bleach.

Beef. Dripping. Chips. But unfortunately tripadvisor says I need 100 minimum. But really, what more do you need other than have the chips. Chips. Chips. Chips. You won't be sorry! Unless you sit outside on the Backbeach on a gloriously sunny day, innocently watching the world drift by on the river while supping an ale and enjoying your chips and you get attacked by the pesky sea gulls. Occupational hazard with chips this good. Seagulls know good chips when they see them. They're clever.

Well what can I say, this place is the best place to come for something to eat and drink. The staff are amazing and such a laugh, make you feel welcome and the food it to die for specially the fiery pepper corn sauce. I have bin coming down here for year and still would come in here no matter what. I came from Stockport (Manchester) and come down 3/4 times a year and always tell people back home that if they ever come down here they have to come to come here for food and drink, use Defos have the best staff on the bar and josh is an amazing chef xxxx

Visited with my elderly parents whom are notoriously hard to please . We sat in the window seat in the bar area with lovely views down the estuary . Mad goose purity, mad goose Ubu and jail ale were the three real ales on hand pump on the bar . All were well kept and I was offered tasters prior to purchase . The menu was good and varied with a daily specials board of further dishes . I selected the local faggots with mash and onion gravy, delicious . Dad had the Brixham fish with dripping cooked chips and home made tartar sauce . Mum was struggling to find a small dish for her small appetite so the chef made a personal appearance to see what he could do to help . A homemade prawn cocktail with beautiful granary bread was supplied which suited her small appetite . Lovely food, great staff who went the extra mile to ensure that we were all catered for . Fabulous views . Will definitely return here on my next trip to Devon

Have walked passed this pub many times. Never thought it was much more than a Back Beach pub with superb views up the river. Went for dinner with a group of friends. All meals were first class and well presented. Certainly a significant cut above average pub food. The cod and chips with homemade tartar sauce and pea and mint puree was excellent. It was a relatively quiet evening. The service could have been a little more professional and the tables are plastic topped but what the hell the place was clean and the meals very good value for money. We don't want every pub becoming an up market gastropub. Keep up the good work. I for one will be visiting again.

It was my birthday...... 5 April......we decided to visit a few pubs on Teignmouth back beach, possibly eating in one ...or taking lunch in the CrabShack...and the first was The New Quay Inn...Great location.... but the interior has no atmosphere.... absolutely none....We selected a draft beer from the pumps on show.... the barman apologised and said "Sorry it is off"..... so we ordered an alternative draft beer.... the barman tried and said..... "Sorry it is also off" ... so only one draft beer remaining..... thank our luck that they actually did have that one beer.Then.. "May I have a glass of Chardonay please"..... "Sorry no Chardonay" "Is there any white wine?"...... " Just miniature bottles of Pinot Noir".....How can a beachside pub survive with almost no beer and only miniature bottles of poor wine??I guess we chose the wrong day...... or the wrong pub... we left as fast as we could after drinking the only draft beer and crap wine.....The Ship Inn next door was much better.....

To be honest, we were heading to The Ship which is nearby, but it was full. So we went to the New Quay and asked if we could bring the dog in, which we could, and so we ate there. The main bar is fairly basic, wooden floor, quite large with pool table and only four tables with rather sad plastic covered seats, not very comfortable (sorry!). There is a restaurant part which looked much nicer, but with the dog we were just grateful we could go in. We didn't have great expectations of the meal. So we were surprised and delighted at the quality of the food and value for money. We had a lovely home made chicken, ham and leek pie with creamed potatoes and a home made steak and kidney pudding. Both were absolutely delicious. We were also amazed by the quality of the vegetables that were cooked to perfection. So often vegetables are either cooked to oblivion, mushy and tasteless, but we had sweet carrots slightly al dente and broccoli also perfect and green beans. Well done New Quay, we shall certainly be coming back. The staff were friendly and welcoming and the service was excellent.

Food was great, but the visit was spoilt by the ignorant staff and lack of communication. When ordering our food we asked for a bottle of their feature wine, Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, but was told they only had Pinot Grigio. Strange that, but later in the evening I asked for an extra glass of white wine and was offered the Sauvignon. After ordering our food we had a table inside. Before the food came we were asked, or rather told, to move to another table as they wanted to put the pool table where our dining table was. As soon as we had finished our food we were told that our table was being taken away together with the chairs. We were offered to stand or move to another room. The member of staff who served us was ignorant and rude, at all times at the bar serving her friends and locals first and completely ignoring us until she was ready. She also listened in to our private conversation and even commented on it in a very hostile manner. My report to the Devon Tourist board will reflect her attitude. No way would we re-visit. We ate here because of the comments of other TA contributors and would concur with all of them. Very good, wholesome food made from locally sourced produce and sensibly priced. With a concise but interesting menu that includes dishes such as local faggots and peas and lambs liver, this, unlike other eateries, is not trying to be something it is not. The "restaurant" area is small and seats around 20 covers though food is also served in the bar where you'll find a selection of good ales at a good price. It has gained a reputation for its fish and chips and they didn't disappoint. Friendly welcoming staff add to the experience and the venue deserves to do well.

My fishcakes with chilli and lime dip were so yummy - it's rare to get great olives and fresh raspberries in a side salad. We managed to squeeze in some puddings - cinnamon waffles and chocolate brownies. All washed down with decent coffee. I often visit with my wife and son for drink, and occasionally a meal. The service is efficient and friendly.Backing onto the river, it offers a lovely view down the Teign Valley towards Dartmoor. Sunsets here are magnificent. Sitting outside on the beach in summer is a magical experience. I prefer it to the over rated and "trendy" neighbouring Ship Inn.The only drawback I would mention is that the recent modernisation has made the pub a little less cosy, though the restaurant part is now more fit for purpose.

We had booked a table by the window for 7 which was not available until 7.30-8 which was ok we stayed in the bar for a couple of drinks. I had the muscles to start with and my partner had the sharing board with her friend. These were both great and we enjoyed them, for my main I had steak which was cooked to perfection.Ok this is why I scored this low the chips and onion rings looked nice but all you could taste was the lard it was cooked in we could not eat them so left them. We did mention this to the manager who was going to inform the chef but that was it.Would I go again no I don't think so

Absolutely delicious Sunday lunch. No booking required -6 of us turned up late afternoon, we all chose roast beef. The roast beef was rare just the way we like it with the best roast potatoes and a very tasty selection of vegetables, not forgetting the Yorkshire pudding. We love the back beach when we visit teignmouth the views are stunning - last Sunday the sunset was spectacular.Friendly staff and a lovely venue for a drink or a meal.

We had a great meal on a Friday evening in September & spent a lovely Saturday afternoon here, on the beach, then ate dinner. We had been away for two weeks & the steaks we had were the best during the time we'd been away. The pub has a great view of the river too. A lovely spot. We have family in Teignmouth, so we will be back lots! Oh & the ale is good too!

This is a great pub with friendly staff and a good selection of ales. The beer garden is on the back beach, looking over to Shaldon and offers great views. The New Quay Inn offers some of the best pub food around, it's always really nice and cooked fresh. Far from a pub chain microwaved food affair, this is some of the nicest cuisine around. The chef is a really nice dude and clearly cares about the food that he serves. The Back Beach Burger is must!

OK lets be honest this pub was always a bit of a bruiser ,basic food and beer and banging rock music on Friday and Saturday nights and an interior that had seen better times. However over the last 6 months it has undergone a major revamp, lighter décor, new floor but a above all a new chef who used to cook at The Crab Shack one of Teignmouth's top restaurant. What a difference he has made to the menu which is now neater and cleaner and offering good food at excellent prices. I had a perfectly cooked lambs liver on mashed potato for £8.95. I have paid more than twice this amount in a top restaurant for something half as good. The good lady had mussels which she says were some of the best she has eaten. The pub is situated on the back beach in Teignmouth and there are window tables looking out over the Estuary, the setting is great, and with tables on the beach you can virtually enjoy the sun all day until it sets. Give it a go you will be rewarded with some great food at a great price!!Oh and you still have the music on Friday and Saturday night---Result!!

Service was fairly chaotic when we went but friendly enough. The food was entirely uninspiring. Certainly, a jolly place to go drinking but the restaurant offering is not currently their strong point.

We had a pint here looking out over the harbour and saw food coming out that looked good so on a return visit tried it out. Glad we did! We ordered beer battered cod with triple fried chips. It came with pea purée and tartar sauce and was beautifully cooked. The fish was so fresh I'm sure it had been landed that morning. Perfect food and friendly service.

A group of us spent the weekend in Teignmouth, Saturday afternoon was glorious and we found a table at the back of the New Quay Inn to settle and have a drink. As often happens one drink turned into 5 and the staff we lovely and remembered the round every time we sent the men to the bar, no mean feat as there was 12 of us!After looking at the menu we asked if they coud fit us in later for dinner, they could and all they asked was whether we could pre order our meals, we did so and returned later for dinner. All of us thoroughly enjoyed our food, and left feeling vey satified.Fast forward to Sunday evening, we went into another pub which was packed as they had a band on, and whilst we all love the music we were all flagging so wanted to be abe to sit. We popped into the New Quay again, the same barstaff were on and welcomed us warmly, this time her parents, the owners were in the bar and they also welcomed us by buying us a bottle of wine to thank us for our custon the day before. Some of us wanted to eat but unfortunately they had stopped serving food at 4pm (it was now 7.30 ish) they then told us that we were welcome to fetch takeaway food and eat it there, they even offered to find us some menus from local places! So we all started to think about what we wanted. 5 minutes later the chef, who had decided to stay for a drink after work offered to reopen the kitchen and cook for us all, we couldn't believe it and he ended up cooking for all 14 of this time. We have never felt more welcome and looked after in a pub, what an absolutley fabulous place, with wonderful people. The food is excellent and we can't recomend this place highly enough if you don't visit the New Quay when you are Teignmouth you will miss a treat.

Love this place. Superb on a fine day with the back beach right outside here. Popular with locals but the Mrs and myself found them chatty and friendly. Likewise the bar staff. Not eaten here so no idea if it's any good but for a drink I keep coming back when in the area.

A lovely location on the back beach. Meal was ok but have had better. I chose the prawn sandwich but there were not many prawns, mainly sauce! However the beef dripping chips were really tasty. My husband chose the pie which was ok but was served with some very strange colour cauliflower which was a bit off-putting.

We used to eat here quite a lot in the past and bring our children here. We popped back a few weeks ago, just the two of us. I must say we were very shocked, at the language used by what were obviously locals/regulars - couldn't bring children here now. Waiting at the bar to get served for quite a while and then a friend of a barmaid or regular gets served as soon as he gets to the bar while I'm still waiting. Recently decorated but seems a cold atmosphere. Such a shame, great location, lovely views if outside but it seems to attract the sort of crowd, backed up by staff, that puts everyone else off ever going there again - which we wont be.

Stayed here for 3 nights with family booking 4 rooms, rooms were clean and bedding good, fab sea view in most rooms (No's 4 or 8 being best view) BUT there is only ONE shower room & toilet for all to share and this room was grim, none of us had a shower in the 3 days. Thank goodness there is sinks in rooms for a strip wash. I understand that it is a listed building and that en suites in impossible but that is no excuse for not having a luxury shower room. Such a shame as the food is first class, staff friendly and the location perfect. We had a fab few days with sunny hot weather and if the shower room was addressed would not hesitate to stay again. Not sure why they don't advertise rooms for rent. I must say that for what we paid this was great value for money, no breakfast, (they don't do breakfast) room only but a lovely little café just round the corner for breakfast

Tucked away, right on the beach, friendly and not too expensive. If it is a lovely day, the children can swim and play on the beach safely, although it is not that big and there are boats tied up so this has to be considered.
