Wow, what a difference. Our last visit was disappointing, apparently the pub was about to be taken over by new management, and it was all a bit sad. Reading recent encouraging reviews we booked for Sunday lunch, and what a treat. Now I'm a fussy so-and-so when it comes to a roast dinner, and we were not disappointed. The staff are lovely, the meal was well cooked, piping hot and plenty of it. Exactly as it should be. Would heartily recommend.

Hit and miss. Location is great, staff are reasonably friendly and the breakfast is fine if slightly limited. On the other hand, the cleaning of the rooms is less than I would hope. On checkin there was a used shampoo left in the shower, a paper bag with items in left under the bed, and (disgustingly) a used pair of boxers behind a corner of the desk. I would guess the between-guests clean is limited to a change of sheets and towels and nothing further. On the last night of my stay there was also no room cleaning/change of towels for reasons unknown. Pub should close at 11 but is sometimes loud long past this.

This was the first time we had visited this bar/restaurant and we were well impressed. The food and service were excellent and the staff very pleasant. I stayed here on day three of a walking holiday. Everything was “fine” — not superb, but totally fine. The room was clean and it was nice that they gave me a room at the very end, which was probably quieter than the rooms right over the pub. I didn’t eat an evening meal here, but the breakfast was good.

Wow! Booked a double room for the weekend as attending family party. We were warmly welcomed on arrival & shown to room 10. Huge room with huge comfy bed. Spotlessly clean everywhere including the original ceiling beams. Lovely fluffy towels & quality toiletries included. Breakfast was sensational, we were delighted by the quality of the food (husband is a chef so is usually very hard to please 🤣). Tom owner pleasant & friendly. We will be back 💯! We stayed here a couplr of yrs ago it was run down but the staff were welcoming and very friendly we were treated well and had a good experience. This year we decided stop by on our travels. We arrived to find a beautiful refurbishment has been done. This pub looks beautiful! Sadly however unlike our previous visit a friendly welcome was not to be found here. A young woman serving greeted us with straight face and a mumbled request as to what we wanted to drink her greeting void of warmth 🫤 it made for a cold welcome. Our attempt to make brief polite conversation was recieved with a blunt one word response, with no eye contact or smile 😞 it was evident she wasn't in the mood for talking😤 we decided to assume that maybe she was just having a bad day or she wax just shy 😉 We decided it best to sit outside as the atmosphere was warmer out than in 🙄. The beer garden had been refurbished new slabs clean tables well cut grass and beautiful flowers made for a pleasant space to sit and enjoy our drinks in the sun. Would we return urm well 🤔 yes probably. Have we gone away feeling this is a welcoming friendly pub where we would stay no definitely not 👎

Tasty beer, excellently presented and tasty food. We had an early evening pint (Landlord and Jail Ale, both well looked after) and main course meal. The bar was busy and restaurant areas were half full but service was fast and the food came within 15 minutes: spinach and ricotta ravioli for me and a vege burrito for my partner. Warm bowl or plates, friendly attentive waitress and a nice amount of a buzz in a well lit, clean place mean I’ll definitely return soon.

We were here on holiday and went here for an evening meal, the menu didn't have much choice, so we picked the fish and chips. we wasn't sure the fish was, it wasn't cod, it was too well done the batter was really dark brown and the fish was dried up inside so it had been cooked far too long and my husband found 2 hairs in the batter and when we mentioned this to the young girl, she did not know what to say and just took our plates away , we was very disappointed with this as it was meant as a treat for us but we will not go back there. the price was also very high and standard very low.

Booked a table for 3 people at 3pm in the restaurant area but when we arrived we had to sit in the bar area which was Very noisy (not so good). The meal & service however was excellent, I had a 8oz steak with the usual vegetables, chips & onion rings. The plate arrived hot & everything was wonderfully cooked. For me it was a really really good meal & I can understand how the restaurant area was packed out. Book earlier to make sure you get into the restaurant area if you want a quieter meal but they are doing something very right to be this popular. Excellent meal & service.

Excellent food. Consistently great food at dinner and breakfast with wonderful ambience in lovely old inn. Rooms were warm and comfy and very lovely for the price: the only reason I did not give 5 stars was because we had originally booked a single which we did not like. The single is outside next to the outdoor toilets and did not seem secure. Was also a bit smelly! But the landlady was amazing and very accommodating and quickly upgraded us to a room inside the inn. Only dropped in for a quick lunch. Friendly staff, varied and well priced menu. The mixed pepper ciabatta was very tasty, well presented with an excellent salad and good value. Service was quick. It's right in the centre of Bovey so ideal. Will happily return. Fast forward to Boxing Day 2023 and we dropped in on the off chance that they were serving food and I'm really glad we did. They had a special Boxing Day menu and we opted for the Scallops done with cream and slivers of bacon. As well as being truly wonderful it was also the best priced scallop dish we have seen in a long while and we live in Cornwall where there are plenty of options. For mains my lady had the fish pie which was truly delicious (I know as a blagged a taste). My son opted for the Spinich and Ricotta Ravioli which was equally amazing - yes I blagged a taste of that as well. I opted for the Roast Beef dinner and I have to say it is the best "bought out" roast dinner I have ever tasted - the meat melted in the mouth and was full of flavour and the portion, including no fewer than 5 vegetables plus potatoes, was actually too big for me to finish - something unheard of. The service was also exceptional as was the value for money. Can't recommend this place enough and really looking forward to revisiting when we're next in Bovey.

Went here with my wife who is temporarily disabled - so the immediately adjacent pub car park was helpful ! We had what is probably a typical lunch on a Friday - fish and chips and scampi and chips. The food was adequately cooked and, consequently, fairly tasteful and we both enjoyed it. We were served by the lady who was running the pub bar and she proved to be cheerfully pleasant and very efficient. The only downside, unfortunately, was the cleanliness of the place. I rested my hand on our dining table and it "stuck" - the table top appeared not to have been cleaned for a while and this marred our visit. I understand this establishment may be about to change hands so things might change for the better.

(She called me repeatedly for over 20 minutes while I was occupied with my kids) The second night that my team stayed- after working an extremely long shift at a local wedding- The manager had taken their sheets away from them!!! They were so tired, they slept anyway, but it was the worst hotel experience they’ve ever had. Additionally, she also shouted at us for one of my staff members plugging in his electric car. The Menu was very limited, and no breakfast service was available. Car park is tucked away behind and we missed the signs due to arriving at rush hour. But once checked in, all was OK. The room (12) was dated, tired, and worn-out, but clean and well prepared. It was very noisy when we opened all the windows because it was unbearably hot. Not from vehicles but other guests having a good time. No air conditioning!!! The pub needs a refit! Greasy carpet turns my stomach. Not in any way acceptable. Redecoration needed. Staff are lovely, they tried really hard and effectively improved my rating which would have been a 1 at best. Stayed here as my daughter booked it for us as a Christmas present. She requested a disabled room and on arrival we got an attic room. Stairs steep no lights and as a sufferer of MS my husband had to almost carry me. Bed was so uncomfortable it was about 2inches off the floor. Minimal coffees left out, had to ask for more which appeared to be a problem. This room is not shown on website and was totally unsuitable for a disabled person. Staff very unwelcoming hardly spoke. No teaspoon for coffees and don’t serve breakfast. So my daughter paid £190 for 2 nights just for an uncomfortable low bed with two flights of stairs. Shower was the only good thing. My husband was ready to come home after first uncomfortable night but felt bad as our daughter had already paid. This place really isn’t fit for over night stays and staff need a course in manners. Overall a disappointing stay and I would never recommend.

The food was given to us before any cutlery which took ages to arrive, we had to start to eat with our fingers when it did arrive we were told the bar was busy. We then had to wait even longer for sauces. It's just such a shame as it used to be a great pub but seems that lack of staff and un- friendly staff along with mediocre food means it has really gone down hill. We defiantly won't be returning.

Parked up for some lunch and a pint. Turned out they had no chef that day but since we had used their parking we thought we would pop in for a drink anyway as it's only polite. Saw that the butchers did sausage rolls across the street so picked two up. It was raining so we went in and ordered a pint and asked if it would be ok to quickly eat the two rolls inside- we were the only customers inside at that time. Bar maid agreed but was very rude about it. We decided to drink up fast, and have suspicions that we were overcharged for our drinks- £10.30 for a bogstandard cider and a guest ale on the handpulls. Unfortunately one of our dogs jogged his waterbowl whilst we were there, only a bit of a splash, and when we asked for a towel or a bit of blue roll to clear the spill up she was once again snappy and unfriendly. Kindest word was when we were leaving and won't bother visiting again, which is a shame because the pub was nice inside and out, unlike the staff

It is very bad service for the manager to be talking to other staff members about pub business when when he is supposed to be serving us.

Went here for a few drinks when visiting Teignmouth. As far as wetherspoons go this was a pretty good one. Great location quite near to the train station too. The locals were all really friendly and chatty. Was pretty clean and toilets well kept. Didn't have to wait very long to be served (using the app).

My daughter and I arrived just after 6pm and checked into our room, then went straight to the bar for a pre-dinner and drink. The food was a good standard but the service was poor. I had to go up to the bar to order a drink. We then went back to our room and my daughter had a shower only to find a ladybug infestation on the ceiling and some dropping to the floor. I had to go down to reception in my pyjamas as there was no way of contacting reception from our room. I had to walk through the restaurant and bar to speak to someone. After a brief chat amongst the staff a strange man offered to ‘vacuum up the ladybugs’. I declined this offer and asked for another room. The only room available for my adult daughter and myself was a very small and shabby double room. Having no other choice we went to bed. There was no apology for putting us in a bug infested room and no offer of compensation or refund for transferring us to an inferior room to the one we paid for. The whole experience was unpleasant and we would definitely not go back there again.
