Love dropping into this pub for a meal at the start and end of a break in this area. Lovely, friendly pub. Really good pub food - always nicely cooked and presented. Staff are huge fun, very attentive and manage to make what could be just an ordinary pub meal into an event. Thank you all - we will be back!

This was a really lovely pub we arrived with family for a Sunday Roast. There was a slight hiccup because they didn't have our booking so weren't expecting us but they accommodated us nevertheless. The pub was light and airy despite it being quite hot outside which was a pleasant surprise. We also loved little quirky bits of decor around the pub. All the staff were very friendly and patient with us. The food took a while but when it arrived we all enjoyed it and it had clearly been freshly cooked. Some of my family had a strudel and they loved it. My only problem is that I was on holiday and this is not local to me as it's a real gm and I'd have definitely become a regular if it was my local.

Good first impression, it's a delightful old inn. Not the warmest of welcomes, which was compounded later. There were a number of imbibers in the bar area when we arrived, and after visiting our room, we returned downstairs for a drink, but the drinkers had gone and the place was in darkness. Charlotte behind the bar informed me it was closed. Now this 10 pm and licencing on a Friday is to 11. When I said I was hoping for a beer, the landlady appeared and said they had cashed up. "So I can't get a drink then" says I (having driven up from London via detours for roadworks and an accident and in some need!) "Well, I suppose we can put it on a tab for your room" says she grudgingly (you can work out what I wanted to say at that moment) Barry her partner who was now near (I think he could well of heard my rasping dry throat lol) suggested a brew which I was offered to sample (beginning to feel better) Can I have a second pint? "You want three?" says the lady. Yes please says I (I thought I was in Oliver) and we took them to our room. Now I've given you a bit of a ramble, but I'm trying to build the picture. Aren't you supposed to warmly welcome and try and accommodate your guests? I needed those beers! It's not all bad, but there's a little more. Staircase smelt cheesy, the ensuite basin was badly cracked and I had to clean the filthiest TV remote ever. However, somewhat thrown together with 'that will do' stuff, the room was charming, beds comfortable, shower fine (tray got very slippery though as it was smooth and there was no shower mat. Enough. The feature that greatly balanced the negative, was the breakfast. My oh my. Apparently local everything (including the cook hah) it was superb both mornings, and Barry was discreet, warm and helpful. Conclusion: This place has the potential to be amazing, but someone in the team seems to have lost heart.

The staff are very attentive and are very professional. Bit of a strange set up in the car park with seating for which I’m guessing is local people and management but takes the seats in the sun towards the evening. The garden space is enclosed and very nice like the whole area it is so quiet. We see lots of tables with reserved on the Friday when we arrived and we asked if we could eat were asked if we wanted to eat in the garden (we didn’t realised this is the only place to eat or would have pre booked which is our error). But I said I didn’t want to and was given a random table by the toilets/storage which would have been fine as it was our mistake . But we see lots of empty tables which we could have been given. The quality of the rooms was very good and the staff and food was very good. I do think it should be advertised that the pub will wind down earlier if it’s not busy.as by ten the pub was showing us it was closing up. (Putting chairs on tables ) we were asked if we wanted another drink . And they were kind enough to give us some ice to take to our room we did feel a bit pushed out as we were the only ones in the bar. We were looking for a quiet weekend and we got that you could literally hear a pin drop beautiful area . The pub should advertise a bit more what you get when you arrive :pre book food as no over option locally : early closing Had a nice stay but felt a bit uncomfortable within the pub and that had nothing to do with the staff we just feel it’s not quite managed in the right way (But that is just us I’m sure others will feel differently)

We stayed 2 nights in The New Inn - the bedroom and en-suite had everything we needed and was ver quiet at night. What was different was the feather pillows, the beautiful crisp white linen bedding and the enormous fluffy white towels! Most unusual! We ate there and I don’t understand the negative comments - the food was good, huge helpings huge and the price much cheaper than Surrey prices. Plus all the staff were really friendly and helpful….

We have been to this pub several times. There is always a wide variety of menu choices, including the specials board. The food is excellent and well presented. The atmosphere is good and the staff are very friendly. The best bit is that dogs are welcome and get a treat from the bar. A great place to eat. Would recommend it to anybody, especially if you have a furry friend.

After a long walk from Rye Harbour on a mild February day, my wife and I made for this popular inn in Winchelsea, The last part of our walk up the steep hill from the beach road was something of a slog and the inn sign hanging a few hundred metres along the road was very welcome. Although we arrived just before 2 pm there was no problem about having a table and ordering a meal from the interesting menu. My wife opted or the prawn and crayfish starter - a wise decision considering the size of the portion. I went for the sea bream. This was served on a bed of lyonnaise potatoes with samphire, broccoli and wilted spinach. The meal was cooked perfectly but the portion size was huge with two large fish fillets. I simply couldn’t manage it all. We felt that service was friendly and timely, and the meal represented impressive value for money.

We ordered what was described as sour dough bread, a crab salad, a chowder and some chips. The bread was not in any way sour dough and it could have easily been a week old so we took one bite each and left the rest. I was warned that the crab in the salad wasn’t dressed (why not??) but I assumed that the salad itself would be dressed at least and there would perhaps be some mayo served with the nude crab. Wrong! The salad was crudely made and was served with absolutely no dressing. The crab on top was grey and very unappealing so the ‘dish’ was barely touched. The chips were thankfully well made. Winchelsea is a lovely little place with the New Inn as it’s only place to eat. If a cafe were to open there that could serve proper fresh bread (not difficult) and butter with a few equally fresh DRESSED salads, the New Inn would be out of business.

There are not many places to eat or drink when you are visiting the lovely little town of Winchelsea, so it Is handy that the one remaining pub is a good one. You enter into the two main wooden floored dining areas on each side of the front door. The small bar area is stone flagged with a fireplace, a piano and four tables to the far wall. And then past the bar is a second room space, more like a public bar with TV screen and the short section of the L-Shaped bar which supports a bank of keg taps in this section. From this room you go out into the small courtyard car park to find an enclosed walled garden with a large tree in the middle, giving plenty of shade to quite a few of the benches. The food menu is above you standard pub nosh but not enough to be described as gastro. We went for two fish dishes from the specials board, the sea bream and the sea trout and they were both superb. There is five ale pumps on the bar in total but only three were in operation and alongside the obligatory Green King brew of Old Speckled Hen( this is a Green King house) and the ubiquitous Harvey’s Sussex Best was a very passable Longman Blonde. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this one for either a beer or a meal when visiting Winchelsea.

Great find for a few days away. Very friendly, food great and a fantastic hidden garden. Stayed three nights in very comfortable en suite rooms, fans provided as it is an old traditional pub tastefully renovated but not suitable for a/c. Pub closes at 10pm weekdays (11 at weekends)so nice a quiet for a restful stay. Breakfast made to order and a good choice. The garden is a beautiful spacious area with an array of unusual plans and butterflies. Parking on site and local bus stops outside. Would recommend for a few days away and will be going back.

We popped in a few days ago with our granddaughter for refreshments having walked around Winchelsea in the sun and were pleasantly surprised by the secluded well maintained beer garden at the New Inn. A few days later we thought we'd visit again for lunch, my wife quite often orders a prawn cocktail from the chain type pubs and is normally pretty much under whelmed. However the one she ordered here which admittedly included crawfish tails was to her mind the best she has ever had. Just the right amount of chopped salad of cucumber, cherry tomatoes which wasn't just lettuce from a bag a good portion of prawns topped with crawfish tails and finally a superior home made sauce along with quality bread and butter triangles. I had fish and chips, it was cod and a decent batter and chips none of which were greasy. The only very small detail were the petit pois garden peas which were slightly lacking in taste although they were superior to the ones normal restaurant's serve. The staff were lovely and attentive checking on our enjoyment of their food. We definitely plan on eating here again.

I have visited the New Inn for lunch twice in the last couple of weeks and have enjoyed it both times. The welcome is warm and friendly and the service is prompt without being hurried. They stock a good selection of beers and have a decent food menu as well as 'daily specials'. On both occasions I was unable to resist the suet pudding - a rare treat these days! On one occasion steak and kidney, on the other bacon and onion. Both were delicious - cooked to perfection and served with a generous selection of fresh vegetables and either chips or mash. The pub was busy but not 'packed out' so I was able to enjoy a very agreeable lunch at a reasonable price. Recommended.

This pub must be the most depressing pub I've ever been to. The decoration is horrendous and there is no warmth or atmosphere, also a very peculiar layout. Such a shame as the village of Winchelsea is charming and sophisticated but is let down by its only pub. Don't waste your time! Great potential for someone to buy and transform into something worth visiting.

Have visited this pub on many occasions as it is local to my parents in law. Food has always been to a very high standard. Unfortunately, yesterday we went for mother in law’s birthday lunch. A party of 7. Obviously due to C19 restrictions we were seated at 2 tables- no problem but then the ‘manageress’ took our orders with our a note pad and one of our main courses did not arrive , a waitress noticed that we were not all eating and enquired - what were we waiting for. As well as the main, there were 2 side dishes missing. It was around 15 minutes later before they arrived. We were also not asked if we would like more drinks etc at any point. The in laws are known to the manager as regular customers- we saw him be made aware of the fiasco but he did not come over, apologise or acknowledge the fiasco. We don’t visit often , perhaps 4 x a year but usually for large family gatherings when lots of money is spent. The in laws visit 2-3 times weekly. If this had been my first visit, I would vow never to return. The young waitress, remained calm and tried her best to rectify the problems but it was apparent that she was left on her own to do this. The management failed themselves and their staff.

We had a really lovely meal here, mixed seafood platter was fantastic - the mackerel pate alone was super. We adults had steak, so tender and perfectly cooked to our request. Children's meals good too and they are well. Would recommend as lots of Coronavirus safety measures and staff friendly and welcoming.

Stopped here on our walk from Rye. Thoroughly recommend the seafood sharing platter which was tasty, generous and excellent value for money. Really nice walled garden with tables nicely spaced. Dog friendly too.

It was our first overnight trip since the COVID-19 outbreak The New In had introduced measures to comply with social distancing measures such as one way system in the bar/restaurant area, enhanced cleaning, table service and contactless payments for for food and drink. The staff were see to be taking appropriate action such as sanitising and wearing face visors. This didn’t take away their friendly interaction with guests and we found Paul and Debbie to be good hosts. The room was comfortable and clean and breakfast had a very good choice, including vegetarian option. Winchelsea is a lovely place with a great church and the beach can be reach by either a 25 minute walk or five minute drive.

We needed a place to stay while visiting an elderly relative in the area. The New Inn was perfect. We had the twin room. The beds are very comfortable and the room perfectly clean. Although we didn’t get chance to have dinner here this time, the menu looked good for meat eaters and veggies. There was a good choice for breakfast. I thoroughly recommend the porridge. The owners are delightful. They are very friendly, as is their dog, Dave - the star of the place! We’ll definitely be back.

Our visit didn't really get off the ground. On a circular walk from Rye to Winchelsea and back to Rye, we were due to stop for lunch at the New Inn. Dutifully removing our muddy boots, my first task was a brief visit to the loo. Asking politely if I might use the pub's facilities I was met with sour, passive/aggressive 'no, there's a public toilet 200 yards down the street'. I asked again, 'it's not possible to use the loo?', no - there's a public toilet 200 yards away. So essentially turned away. Frustrating to say the least. Lunch aborted, we carried on to Rye where we had a lovely lunch at The Ship - a gastro pub near the harbour - a welcoming, friendly and busy place with a warm smile and a no-nonsense menu. The New Inn would do well to make some notes.

Visited this evening, Tuesday 4/2 and had the £10 menu. Fabulous food and great value. We had the leek and potato soup, goats cheese starters, beef pie and salmon goujons mains and sticky toffee pudding and gateaux puds. Two courses for £10, yummy and kind to your pocket.

Stopped on the way home from visiting friends, the staff were so friendly and welcoming, we ordered liver and bacon with veg and mash, it was absolutly delish, with quick service. As we live 30 mins away we will most definitely be going back. Highly recommended.

Throughly disappointed with the ‘gourmet burger’ and chicken salad! The gourmet burger was a cheap processed meat patty, there was nothing ‘gourmet’ about it other than the price! The chicken salad was a mere half chicken breast served up on some lettuce leaves (no tomato, no cucumber, no peppers!), nothing that would constitute a salad. Don’t waste your money with this establishment, especially with these prices! I won’t be returning!

Visited here today for the first and unfortunately the last time. Food was nice. A tad slow even though not busy. Bar staff were friendly.

Called in for lunch. Warmly welcomed by very friendly and helpful staff. The service was quick and efficient and our lunches were well presented and well cooked. The portion sizes were just what we wanted and were good value for money. Another bonus was that the establishment is dog friendly. I would recommend The New Inn to anyone in Winchelsea looking for a good meal and we will certainly be back.

We recently had lunch there before we embarked on a long dog walk. The pub is located in the town centre and there is easy parking behind and on the streets. We ordered a burger and a chicken burger and they were both really nice and well priced.Overall, a nice pub and a good choice.

We have always ate at our local befeeter but now we have tried this one I will never eat at our local again. The chef is amazing food came out hot looked amazing and tasted the best I have tasted in a long time. This chef must love his job and I hope he is proud of what he achieved. We ordered a 3 course and couldn't manage it. We have to order a 3 course at our local as portions are so small. I still can't get over how amazing my meal was. And the place its self we have never been didn't even know it was there. It was just by chance that rainbow restaurant had no heating so we googled and found this place. We was worried would end up at the one near premiere inn, but this place is so lovely. Cosy, welcoming, we have said we will travel an hour just to go and have lunch again or even book a hotel to spend the evening here as such a nice place. Everything I wanted relaxed. Warm and such friendly staff. Waitress couldn't do enough for us. Wish I had room for desert.

Really lovely location on the beach. Abit difficult to find. You go threw a tunnel to get to the stoney beach. Lovely young lady was very pleasant. Lovely views. Food was nice and coffee. Good service.

A few improvements to take on board. Three vegetarians and one meat eater. Ordered two vegetarian nut roasts and it turned out to be boiled rice with nuts and berries. The roast potatoes and parsnips were lovely, the soup my husband had was lovely and the roast beef for our friend ordered was eaten without leaving a scrap. The homemade ice cream was filled with ice crystals and could not be eaten (which was a pity as it was very tasty). For thee meals, one soup and four desserts and four non alcoholic drinks the bill came to £120. The vegetarian roasts need work. I did ask the waiter if the roast vegetables had been cooked in oil and if the gravy was vegetarian and they had to return to the kitchen to ask. Not reassuring for a veggie... All in all it was good food in a quaint restaurant. The restaurant was empty on a Sunday lunch time which I did find strange. A proper veggie roast would have been nice though. A huge plus is that it is dog friendly.
