The New Inn Halse in Taunton Deane

We've been here a number of times now. Never disappointed, the food is great, the staff are friendly and the atmosphere is amazing. I would highly recommend this local pub and restaurant for anyone looking for great food and service.

My second visit to the New Inn, the first being an excellent experience. However, today I ordered the duck starter, but as a main course and expected to get a double portion for this. When it arrived it was small, the duck was cold and the noodles accompanying it were lukewarm. I have to say the staff are friendly and efficient for the most part, but the message that I wanted a main course, not a starter did not reach the kitchen. My dessert was a rhubarb and custard tart. The pastry was tough and the sauce on it did not taste like any custard I have come across. Finally, as I am in my mid seventies I did not like being referred to as "sweetie" when I paid my bill.

A beautiful country pub with great food and attentive friendly staff. Eight of us ( including two young children) enjoyed a tasty Sunday lunch for Mothers day. We couldn't fault anything and will definitely be back.

An absolute gem of a place! Amazing food (Café style brunch menu is great but we had the Á la carte lunch menu, there are specials too!), and a fantastic selection of drinks also. Most importantly the team are so friendly and attentive - and no surprise to find that it’s community owned.) Just amazing, thoroughly recommend a visit and we’ll definitely be coming back. Our new favourite place to eat in Taunton.

I picked the new inn from reviews off trip advisor, and I have to say what an excellent experience, this pub is run by village volunteers and I have to say it’s excellent and the food is amazing so if you want a country gourmet pub you can’t go far wrong with the new inn.

We fancied a spot of lunch after shopping in Taunton and decided that the New Inn was worth a try. We were really delighted with our choice! After a very pleasant drive we parked and received a very warm welcome. There is an excellent range of food on offer - I had one of the best steak and ale pies that I have ever tasted - full of juicy pieces of steak. The Dutch apple & cinnamon cake was delicious too. Very nice local beer too. On the minus side, my wife's Thai fish cakes were OK but lacking in flavour. Staff are incredibly friendly. Highly recommended.

Our extended family group needed to eat the evening before a funeral and I confess to being a bit unenthusiastic about the website’s menu, but……the reality was a real eye opener……..my wife and I live the other side of Oxford and so often we find that a pub meal over promises , while over charging…… with service that is often willing but amateur. We’ve never been to a community owned pub before so this was an amazing experience … the menu was real gastropub, without pretentious or the prices, the wine list was value that I haven’t seen for years and the service, charming, friendly and quick. I have hardly ever given anywhere 5 stars, but this evening was faultless…… a New Inn around Banbury would be a runaway success ……

We had 2 wonderful weeks staying at Cherry Tree Farmhouse at Lavender Hill Holidays and the New Inn was our local for that time. This fantastic community run pub is led by twins Lucy and Elspeth. Very different characters, one warm and welcoming and the other full of slightly wicked fun. Who knew that on our first visit we would end up chatting about Bananaman with them?! We loved the food and the choice of local beers and always received a warm welcome - the staff are great. Thank you - we will be back.

What an amazing venue! Thank goodness it was saved! We went for lunch then dinner to celebrate my husband’s big birthday while staying nearby for NY23/24. So accommodating - 6 adults, 6 kids and 3 dogs were welcomed with open arms. The food was delicious, the service impeccable, the welcome was lovely. Make sure you visit this gem!

Very friendly welcoming pub with a delicious Sunday roast, perfect service especially Gracie and Poppy who were absolutely lovely. Roast sirloin cooked to perfection and a lovely chocolate yule log for dessert. Highly recommend

We stayed here for one night following a day out on the West Somerset Railway as it was nearby and had very good reviews for food and accommodation. We were not disappointed. Serena and Lucy were very welcoming hosts and we enjoyed a chat with them and learned that Ian Botham had stayed in our room (room 5) recently. The accommodation is well decorated and has a lovely shower. We were booked in for dinner and the restaurant area was buzzy and full of people which made for a great atmosphere and the service was very efficient. We then enjoyed a few drinks in the bar which was also busy with locals and visitors alike. This pub was a very good find and we enjoyed our stay.

The New Inn at Halse was the perfect location for us to attend Southwest Railway’s Winterlights steam train experience leaving from Bishops Lydeard Station. It’s just 2 miles on a straight (though narrow) road from the station. It’s the ideal place for us to have a meal afterwards and stay the night without worrying about travelling back home in the dark! We loved the food, the atmosphere and friendliness of the staff too.

We had an excellent meal at The New Inn. We were 8 adults and 7 children enjoying a few days together as a family near Halse. We were seated in the Skittles Alley, which was perfect for us because we are quite a noisy lot. We were made very welcome by the friendly staff, the food was excellent and very good value. We would definitely recommend and will return if we are visiting the area again.

We visited this fabulous pub recently, following a visit to the nearby West Somerset Railway. Our son and his wife had a train to catch fairly early in the evening, and when we arrived at 5pm we were told that - understandably - food orders couldn’t be taken before 6pm - so we sat outside with our drinks and played cards! Just before 6pm, one of the lovely staff came out and took our order. Shortly after we went inside to our table as it was getting a little cool, and having barely been sat down for five minutes, our meals arrived! The food was superb, the service and staff first rate, and we would have no hesitation in returning here when we are next in the area. Thank you for a very pleasant and welcoming experience with excellent food and very friendly and helpful staff!

We had a fabulous welcome Nothing was too much trouble throughout the visit. Bedrooms were very comfortable, dinner was delicious, and the atmosphere fabulous. All the staff were great but a special shout out to Lucy, who was an utterly fabulous host. We will be back.

We had dinner at the New Inn twice during a weeks stay at Halse. Both evenings the food was fabulous and the staff awesome. Thoroughly recommended for both food and ambiance!!

This was the best meal I have had in the Taunton area for a long long while. Had been meaning to check it out for a while and it surpassed my expectations. The food was incredibly tasty - I especially enjoyed my duck main course. Even the dessert was amazing, which is often something I don’t go for in restaurants as they tend to lack imagination. I would think this will be Michelin recommended soon if it isn’t already. Also can’t finish the review without mentioning Elspeth’s excellent service and sense of humour! Planning to go back again soon, highly recommend.

Great find in the tiny village of Hulse which is west of Taunton near the Eastern end of the West Somerset Railway. We enjoyed an excellent meal from an interesting and varied menu.

Our first visit to this great pub which is clearly the centre of the local community and a huge benefit to the village. Our food was first rate. We had a perfectly cooked burger taken from the pub menu and the nicest jacket potato I've had in a long time from the cafe menu - excellent idea to have the choice of both menus particularly of a lunchtime. The property is spotlessly clean, tastefully decorated with discrete background music. The staff were welcoming and efficient.

A superb 2 night stay at the very welcoming and hospitable New Inn at Halse. The staff are all delightful and helpful. My room was very comfortable and well appointed. Dinner in the restaurant on one night was excellent and well priced and the breakfast on point for what I wanted. Will certainly stay again if in the area.
