Visited this pub 2 years ago and went back again this september 2024. Aaron and carolyn are great hosts and the food is well worth the trip. All cooked by carolyn herself. Main meals between £15 to £19 well worth the price good selection of beers. So if you are looking for a great meal in a lovely old style pub with beams and roaring fire this is the place to go.

Found this place on ‘Search for Sites’ App as required a motorhome stopover near to the A66. Delightful find with two very welcoming hosts Aaron & Carolyn. Lovely home cooked food consumed in front of a lovely log burner fire. Would highly recommend a visit if passing by or in the area. Car park small but we manoeuvred our 6.3m van into place for the night without much effort.

We were looking for a nice pub for lunch and came across this one. Ordered pork belly , lasagne and tuna/sweetcorn & mayo sandwich . Oh my , the food was bloody fantastic. My fussy pants friend 😂 requested roasties instead of mash (noooo problem ) - she said the pork belly was fab . The lasagne had big chunks of meat in it and was extremely tasty (comes with garlic bread too) and my tuna sarnie was packed with loads of tuna (the bread was really soft and fresh) and came with a side salad and crisps . The landlord and landlady were lovely , chatty and extremely accommodating. Would definitely go back xx

Dropped in for a quick drink after a walk and got a lovely welcome and a good pint. The food coming out looked great so we went back a few days later for a fireside dinner. We had really good homemade soup and pies. Very friendly little pub, we will make a point of going back next time we're in the area. I find Angela J's review rather odd as 'he' doesn't do the food, 'she' does and it's delicious!

We visit from the South regularly with our most recent visit being over the Easter Weekend. Whilst at home we wanted to book somewhere for Easter Sunday lunch ‘like mum makes it’ and it just had to be here. If you want a home-made, gorgeous, fresh Sunday lunch with an array of vegetables and trimmings with a warm, welcoming service then this is your place. Topped off this Easter Sunday with another couple of drinks in the arm chairs by the fire, with pub dog Ada at our feet. Thank you Arron & Carolyn for helping to make our Easter Sunday special. We can’t wait to come back on our next visit.

I think Angela J was reviewing the wrong pub as she couldn't be more Wrong, In My Opinion !! Landlord & Landlady were both very friendly & welcoming when we called in on Saturday as they opened. Great, cosy country pub well worth stopping off at. We sat near the lovely open fire which was appreciated on a cold windy day. Lovely atmosphere and our lunch was outstanding. We really enjoyed our Sunday Lunch at the New Inn at Hoff. The landlord was very welcoming and it was a friendly atmosphere from the onset. We also have a Border Terrier and their resident BT Ada and Ernie got on so well, it was lovely to see. I opted for the Lamb Shank at £15.95 whilst the better half opted for the Sunday Roast Beef Dinner at£12.95 both excellent value and so tasty. Both came served piping hot. The lamb was delicious and fell off the bone. An assortment of veg included, Parsnip, Roast and Mashed Potatoes, Brussels, green beans, mange tout, swede and courgette. With plenty of gravy and a home made Yorkshire pud…Devine… The landlord, forgive me for not asking his name, was very informative of the area we are staying and was such a nice guy, made us very welcome. The young waitresses was lovely too, Thankyou. We loved the comfort of the oak beams and cottage style decor, would imagine it very cozy with the log burner glowing on a colder day. We left room to share the Raspberry/ white chocolate Cheesecake which came with Lakeland Vanilla Ice cream, this was recommended by a lovely couple sitting next to us, they were on holiday and this was their 3rd visit…But hey, come and check it out yourself. Well worth a visit and this will be revisited by our good selves very soon.

This little gem is worth a detour for, it’s run by a friendly couple who are at the top of their game. It’s dog friendly and if you’re lucky you’ll meet their cute little pub dog too! Everything was cooked fresh; they talked us through the menu and were very knowledgeable about drinks. My husband really enjoyed his local Settle Brewery pints. The pub food was great, the lamb shank was the stand out. It’s a lovely historic setting, and on a colder rainy night the real fire (stove) was a welcoming touch. We just walked in but I can imagine that during the season you’d need to book ahead. Closed Mon/Tue.

On the last day of our holiday a few weeks ago, the better half and I found this absolute gem of a pub. Great service, a pub dog (which we were asked if we were OK with first) good beer and frankly exceptional service. The landlord's local knowledge was commendable, and general manner was great. Now for the food. I had the Westmorland sausage, which was so good I went straight from the pub to go and buy some. My partner had the Cumberland pie - which is a dish we now enjoy frequently at home. As a chef I'm particularly picky with food and as far as home cooked pub food goes this is a winner all round. Combined with quality service, I recommend this place whole heartedly to anyone in the area.

I went with my family for Sunday lunch, we walked in to be greeted by a friendly gentleman, who took our drinks order and we received them quickly. We were then taken to our table to be greeted by a woman to ‘read out the menu’ her clothes from top to bottom were filthy. She took our order then went away. As conversation with the gentleman progressed we were informed that the chef was also the unhygienic looking woman. Our food came quickly, I had the roast beef, which was over cooked and dry and overall lacking in size and flavour. We were midway through our dining experience as the woman who had cooked our dinner walked through the pub with a scruffy looking dog in her arms. This wasn’t ideal having already eaten the majority of our meals, linking in with the fact that she wasn’t clean to start with arises questions about the cleanliness and the hygiene of the chef. We received our bill accompanied with a mint imperial each, I looked at the mints and they were all stained brown. I went on to complain to the gentleman about the state of the mints, he openly admitted the fact that they have a local farmer who comes in on an evening with dirty hands after work and dives straight into the bowl of mints. A very bad ending to an overall disappointing experience. Makes me wonder how on earth this pub has a high rating. Safe to see me and my family will not be returning to this dated, dirty establishment.

Called in for a Sunday lunch, pub old and quaint. We had lamb shank which itself was well cooked but very small, the carrot and turnip had a very odd taste, the rest of the vegetables were in one dish and consisted of slices of raw carrot, yellowing broccoli, bits of leek and bits of courgette with lots of water in the bottom. Over priced for the small portion. Was disappointed to see the cook carrying a dog around then return to the kitchen. Felt the whole place would benefit from a good clean.

Went to this pub after reading lovely reviews, but very disappointed. Unfortunately, one person in our group left the gate open - it does have a sign asking not to leave it open but that is not an excuse for the owner’s wife to have pushed him out of the way and shout at the costumer. She ran after the dog, which was fine, and was still moaning when she got back and left the dogs upstairs - where they should be. We all had a pint, the atmosphere was horrible after the incident and also, the pub is very cold. We obviously gave up on having lunch there by then, and when we left, both the owner and his wife followed us to make sure the gate was open (think we got it by now, no need for that). They both shouted at us, the owner’s wife tried to slap us, they both threatened us, we were called idiots and to never come back (as if we would!). It’s not hard to ask politely to not leave the gate open. They have no idea how to run a business, absolutely no idea how to treat a customer and it looked like the owner’s wife was in her pyjamas. We should have called the police. Just don’t ever go in this pub.

Small pub on the outskirts of Appleby. Nice friendly landlord who keeps a good pint. Food was okay but could be better. Lumpy mash and gravy made from granules wasn’t good for the prices charged. Sausage and mash is as simple as it gets, but taking time to make “Proper” gravy (freeze it in small portions) would make all the difference. Sausage itself was a good quality butcher made affair which kind of saved the day

What a gem! This place is tucked away but on 4 different walking routes! We have had lunch twice and went back for Sunday Dinner because we were so impressed with not only the food but the friendly service we received from Carolyn and Aaron. We were not disappointed! A real choice of meals and everything we had was Home made and delicious, a party of 13 came in while we were there and they were served without a batted eye and all seemed to enjoy too. Definitely recommend, we’ll be back.

Having read all the reviews we decided to try for ourselves whilst holidaying in the area. I could not fault this place. From the warm reception from the owners to the superb quality of the food served my wife and I were truly impressed. The first thing that struck us was the traditional beamed, quaint, olde world feel to the place. We both had an excellent pie with beautifully prepared veg, so good we cleared the plate. Having read about the ginger pudding I decided to try it. It was sublime. My wife always goes for a lemon pud and she loved the lemon torte.

We were advised to try this pub by the owner of our caravan site and we were not disappointed. The service and food were excellent, the menu was varied - good food with a modern twist, so much more than expected in a countryside pub. We enjoyed it so much that we booked to go back the following night. The atmosphere was happy with very friendly staff, a chef that took time to talk to us and quite a few interesting jovial locals. Would definitely recommend.

Having completed a circular walk to take in Rutter Force we arrived at the pub very ready for a drink. The welcome was incredibly good and the owner gave us the low down on the local beers before we decision which one to go for which was great. Very reasonably priced two.

Visited in July by chance, the wife was hungry so we stopped for a bite to eat, I was absolutely overwhelmed by the happy, friendly welcome we got from the landlord.

We were renting a holiday cottage close to this pub and were disappointed to find on arrival that it was temporarily not serving meals as the owner/chef had fallen ill and been hospitalized. On the last night of our holiday, we called in to see if it was still closed and were told that it was due to open for food the following evening. 10 minutes later we had a knock on the cottage door to say that the chef would be more than happy to cook a meal for the two of us, which she did. It was absolutely delicious. Definitely service beyond the call of duty!

This place was recommended to us and despite us having a not so good experience two years ago we booked with our family for an evening meal.

We ate here on our first night in the area on the recommendation of the owner of our holiday accommodation. It was a short walk down a bridle path which brought us out at the back of the pub.

It would be so easy to drive past this little country pub but so glad we decided to give it a try. Just 5 mins drive from Appleby in Westmoreland where we were staying. Menu had a nice mix of classic pub staples and other interesting dishes. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals: quality at reasonable prices with good service plus a warm welcome from the landlord and his wife. Next time we are in the Lake District we will definitely be paying another visit. Elky from Edinburgh

Having enjoyed many a visit to The New Inn, Hoff, near Appleby, and the company of the hosts, Carolyn and Arron, I decided to approach them with a view to preparing a surprise meal for my wife’s birthday. Carolyn and Arron were only too happy to oblige and went out of their way to help create a special menu for our party of four. The food was superb, the hosting excellent, and the ambience convivial. As always the food was of the of the highest standard; we have enjoyed many a Sunday lunch at The New Inn, Hoff. We highly recommend this ‘gem’ in The Eden Valley, Cumbria. We will back, again and again.

We had Sunday lunch, nothing to write home about. Crowded tables, not a pub, no room to stand at the bar and chat. What Can I say, wouldn’t go back if you payed me!

Lovely home made food. My husband especially enjoyed his pie and my naturally gluten free Sunday lunch was absolutely delicious with a bonus of my first gluten free draught lager - also delicious. Very friendly landlord and Chief Cook and Bottle Washer, Arron and Carolyn. Couldn't fault a thing. Would definitely recommend and return. Also really good value for money.

Lovely little pub, Barman and Chef lovely hosts - food was beautifully simple and loving made with great flavour and felt like a home from home, what I would argue is needed after a long walk! Thank-you so much - will be returning when we come to visit family again!

Soup lovely but the daytime offering was pretty and expensive for sarnies, nice barman and good for a drink. But wouldn't eat again

We called in for tea mid walk and got a warm welcome (literally - the stove was going) and drink and dessert. Friendly and knowledgeable owners who had lots of nice stories and useful tips for other places to visit. We were really pleased we stopped by.
