After my experience at this establishment I really feel it necessary to write a review. It is always rather baffling to me, should you find it necessary to make a comment or even go as far as to complain to a proprietor regarding their services, they then regale you with a veritable list of safety guards they have in place to cover themselves. I guess this is a good form of defence to a query but it is not particularly helpful or endearing. I note a previous review comments that a lady behind the bar seems brusque and unfriendly. Well, I met her last night and unfortunately found the same. Possibly proprietor and clearly practiced in the speech re all their safety nets and the unbelievably idiotic ways her customers just don’t read all the warnings on the menu. Indeed, food allergies are a major issue Madam but I don’t appreciate being talked to like a five year old. I picked what I thought would be a fairly innocuous goats cheese and roasted veg meal. Again, unfortunately, the sauce, for me, was incredibly spiced making my mouth burn and seriously over flavoured with oregano which was not expected from a a dish described under a flavour banner of Provancal. I note on previous menu issues you use the word spicy to describe sauces or dishes so might I suggest you polish that little word off and just drop it into the description of your current Goats Cheese dish. It really would be so helpful to those of us who have just surfaced from Chemotherapy, still feel rough and have sour mouths amongst other things as a result. I really wouldn’t like someone else to experience this and, feeling suitable chastised and patronised, leave your pub hungry. So, clearly potential diners, you are not to question the proprietor in any way. You are to sit at the table and eat up your overloaded plate of food which upon glancing around seems to be the way in this rather odd, jaded, cramped little pub with its strange atmosphere. Way too much food being served per portion but quietly being ploughed through. Maybe the customers want that stuffed to the gunnels with food feeling and I’m sure they get it. I did not complain about my meal, which for me, after two mouthfuls was inedible, I just queried what was making the sauce so spicy. Goodness knows how an actual complaint would land. You’ve lost three new customers.

We were welcomed with a smile and shown the table, Glad we booked even on a Thusday. My friend and i went here for lunch/ Dinner, I had the venison pie and my friend the fish and chips, both were great portions and very well cooked and presented. The batter on the fish was light, and the pastry on the Venison pie was just enough with just the topping Veg cooked great, broccoli and carrots and french beans with little potatos, all very nice. Its a shame we were too full to have a dessert.

Visited again with family. Good welcome and the fires were under way! Caroline was on her own at front of house but she coped admirably with around six tables. Orders were taken promptly and the drinks and food were served in good time. Well done! The food was very good as usual. The menu is interesting and varied as was the specials menu. A really good pub.

I had avoided this pub for a few years as I once had the worst Sunday lunch of my life in here. But I heard rumours it had really improved, so since I was cycling past yesterday on a cold winter day I stopped in to see if I could get some soup, which was all I wanted. It's amazing how few places do soup these days - I imagine it's thought old-fashioned. Anyway the pub felt immediately cozy, with a lovely log fire and plenty of diners, mainly elderly. The menu is traditional but enticing, with surprisingly reasonable prices. A turkey burger with chips was £16 and about 3/4 foot high! I was glad to hear they had soup but initially disappointed it was vegetable soup. However they did a very good job - it came with some delicious rye bread/white baguette, nice unsalted butter, and the soup itself was thick and flavoursome with big chunks of broccoli and cauliflower, and a drizzle of a herby garlicky oil on top. Everyone around me seemed satisfied with their food too. The only complaint I heard was that it was too much food! You don't hear that much anymore. My only slightly negative comment would be that the lady behind the bar appears a little brusque and unfriendly. I don't think she means to be but it comes across that way. Personally I don't really mind, especially as she was efficient and prompt. But don't expect to be gushed over. It's probably not the best choice for vegans or vegetarians. And if you expect kimchi or harissa to be on the menu, or for your server to be a hipster with a pierced tongue, don't come here. But if you like old-fashioned things done well, I recommend it. You don't have to be old to like old-fashioned!

We came to the New Inn today to meet our niece and family for lunch. We come from South Gloucester and we have some seriously good pubs around us; however, we were blown away by the New Inn! From the greeting on arrival, being shown to our table, the speed with which our drinks order was taken, and similarly for our choices of food, the pleasantness of the staff, everything was just right! And the food was excellent! The portions were generous plus but everything was so good that we mostly managed to finish our meals! A really great little pub!

Very friendly and welcoming staff. Service was excellent despite the pub being very busy. And the food was delicious though in my opinion the portions were too large! I had a burger and it was presented with a stack of onion rings which made it really tall. Probably ate around a third of the portion and that was more than enough. The chips were wonderful.

We were visiting the area and saw this pub on google maps with a 4.9 rating so we stopped for Lunch. Have to say we don’t agree with 4.9, totally a 5! Really lovely pub, helpful friendly staff, great atmosphere and fantastic food. Good size meals meant it was hard work forcing down the Eaton Mess and Ginger cheesecake after!! Spoke with the owner who told us he also own a local farm and supplies the restaurant where his son is the chef. Looks like a great partnership in our view as the meals we had were delicious. Thoroughly recommend and if we’re in the area again we will be stopping at the New Inn again.

We started with shared garlic pizza bread. Neither of us enjoyed it. My wife had liver and bacon. The liver was overcooked and over seasoned. The presentation was poor. I had a burger. The burger was served as a huge stack topped with onion rings. I had to ask for a side plate to dismantle the fashionable but impractical creation as the meal was served on a board barely big enough for the meal. The onion rings contained precious little onion but some very light batter which disintegrated when trying to eat them. The burger was very very well done, dry and unpleasant. The chips were absolutely superb. I asked for ketchup, which was served in an unmarked squeeze bottle and was not the best quality. The primitivo wine was very warm. We were tired after a long journey and didn't have the energy to complain. Needless to say, we will never return.

Sent my beer back as it tasted awful, promptly replaced as new keg wasn't pulled through correctly. Turkey Burger was dry, bland with no seasoning. Bacon was burnt to a crisp. Bizarrely It was presented with 6 inches of onion rings in batter inside the bun!! Fish and chips were tasteless, mushy peas were dry. Not cheap and feel that it was a terrible experience.

I cannot believe how much this pub has changed. It used to be wonderful, with the most delicious devilled kidneys and smoked haddock dishes. We have come for years and always had lovely meals. It is now absolutely awful. It’s like the worst pub grub from the 1970’s. Rubbery, soggy, tasteless prawns with bottled Marie Rose sauce. Utterly inedible. Worst burger I’ve ever had. And the online menu hasn’t even been updated to reflect that not one of the old dishes is still on the menu. Every dish has changed but website hasn’t been updated. So we came here full of excitement expecting to eat some old favourites, to be confronted with a completely different, very sad selection of dishes to choose from. What a shame. Another victim of “Covid-19”?? No, just of pure laziness and shoddiness.

I hadn't been here for a couple of years - and sadly won't be back, based on today's experience. Some cabbage at the bottom of the pile was the only hint of green in a brown landscape. I can't fault the Yorkshire pud, and the £12 price was very reasonable. But it was the worst meal I've had out in years. Very sorry to be writing this as the pub is close by where I live. And I'm surprised, too, as it has been highly rated. Lovely pub sat between the beautiful town of Bradford on Avon and the gorgeous village of Iford, it really does sit well in this part of the world. The food was pretty much faultless, lovely flavours and very well presented, also the variety of drinks were very good, also having my favourite “Iford Cider” on tap! Unfortunately for me, being vegetarian, the options are, well an option. Vegetable curry was the only choice, and having been refined to this choice several times recently, I didn’t fancy it again. It’s definitely not the restaurant of choice if you aren’t carnivorous. The only other fault was the table service wasn’t fantastic. My partner is pregnant and asked for steak well done, on the recommendation of the waitress, she had its medium-well, and was told that if it wasn’t well done enough (pregnant women cannot have any traces of blood), then she would take it straight back and have it cook a little more. Once the food was delivered at our table, our waitress said she would be back shortly to check the steak was ok. After waiting over 5 minutes, she still hadn’t arrived. We had to ask another waitress to take it back and have it cooked through a little more. This all being said, my partner did thoroughly enjoy her steak!

Actually, ALL starters and mains were perfect, in fact the whole experience was fab.As it was so busy we would like to experience the pub on a weeknight when it’s less frantic. The chunky furniture,as nice as it is, does take up a lot of room so staff always seem to be rushing/squeezing past.So midweek it will be.

This is a very interesting historic property with a fabulous atmosphere accentuated by the welcome of Caroline who runs the restaurant and bar with the help of her polite and friendly staff. The food is excellent and represents good value for money considering the quality provided. My husband enjoyed a skate wing which he hadn't eaten for years and which evoked memories of childhood that brought a warm glow, enhanced by the good quality cider. My chicken ceasar salad was a full bowl of delighful flavours. For once, someone had understood that a salad should not be drowned in dressing so that the flavours of the different leaves were enhanced, not lost, and the cheese was rich and tasty and was the perfect accompaniment to the chicken. We decided to share a slice of cheesecake and there was no problem in providing is with one desert and two spoons - something that is sometimes met with distain elsewhere. I have no hesitation in recommending this Inn to anyone who is lucky enough to find themselves anywhere near the village. It is obviously well frequented by locals which is always a good guage of the quality of Inns such as this.

Very disappointed as I recommend this restaurant after previous good food for our celebration firstly we were allowed to choose from the menu to be told on ordering that an item had sold out ! Surely tell customers before they spend time choosing! The fish came in 4 bits as the fish was in small pieces what little fish there was had dried to nothing in a very crunchy batter ! Not good at all , finally a rib eye steak ordered medium rare was certainly well done the chef cooked another steak which was as requested but not being able to eat with my guests was not ideal the lady that I spoke to “ perhaps the manager “ reduced the cost of the meal but was very superficial with any apologies saying the steak was always cooked to request and the fish always good also looking round the room stating all other customers were not complaining!! What she was insinuating was that we should be happy regardless of the quality of food we have recommended this restaurant to many in the past but will no longer and shall be avoiding in future there are so many good restaurants in the area to choose from competition is very strong.

My husband and I were visiting my parents who were camping just up the road. We walked to the pub and received a warm welcome with our two dogs. My skate wing was cooked to perfection and the homemade lasagne was also very tasty. Great selection of puddings too. I would highly recommend this pub if you’re in the area.

Other comments about unfriendly staff is not justified as they were very friendly and helpful on our dinner visit and food was very good

My friends and I went here with no booking in advance. The staff were so friendly and accomodating despite the fact they were very busy.

So we came for a catch up with friends on a Saturday night. Upon arriving we were clearly interrupting service by wanting to sit down. The staff hesitantly sat us eventually and gave us menus. After waiting a good 15 minutes of wanting to place our order I tried to ask a passing waitress who very obviously ignored me so I went up to the bar. I was then told that no further orders could be taken as they had a big table to serve. Why not just tell us that on arrival, that’s fine we were happy to wait but just didn’t know that at the time.

Booked a table luckily, as was very busy! Great traditional Sunday roast and lovely desert of sticky toffee pud. Will visit again.

The last time my husband and I came here was a number of years ago. We brought friends here on Friday (1/3/29) for lunch. We had a thoroughly enjoyable meal and they stated that they would like to come again, the food was great.

Went here foe an evening meal - the place was full and bustling with a good atmosphere. It had snowing most of the day and the pub was warm with a wood fire in one corner. This is a pub restaurant with loyal local support. There was four of us and we had a range of starters - mussels, prawn cocktail - main courses; haggis, sea bream and sirloin. All were cooked to perfection although the sirloin was large it had rather a lot of fat. We also had a range of sweets and al enjoyed the food saying we'd go there again.

Sunday Lunch was supposed to be one of the highlights of a week end away with friends. We visited this same pub last year and had an excellent meal.

We had the most amazing Sunday Roast today at The New Inn. Stuffed lamb shoulder, beautifully cooked veg and crispy Yorkshire pudding. I actually don’t understand some of the reviews on here. We had very friendly service, and didn’t have to wait long for our meals at all. There was a fire lit, the place was full (which says a lot in itself) and we couldn’t fault anything. Maybe we should keep this place a secret - it’ll be even harder now to get a table at this fabulous pub!

To begin with we thought wow, a lovely proper village pub. We had a table by the fire and the beer was good. We chatted to some locals who were the only people in the pub and they were very friendly. Our waitress was helpful and food was really good.

On arrival to this beautiful looking traditional pub we were expecting a smile & a welcome- neither happened! It was clear that they did not welcome ‘outsiders’.... my husband stood at the bar waiting to be served, the bar staff didn’t acknowledge him, they carried on cleaning the menus, wiping the bar etc, then a local came in, they served him immediately!! My husband came back to the table suggesting that we leave, but we were all very hungry and there isn’t anywhere else in the village.

We ate here yesterday lunchtime having taken into account previous reviews, and we were very impressed. The food was of a high quality with generous portions, a varied choice and reasonably priced, and a good selection of real ales. The barstaff were very friendly and attentive and, despite previous reviews, took our orders at our table, though the pub was not busy for our visit.

We came here yesterday for lunch with my brother and wife as he likes the beer on offer. We have been before and had a good lunch but this time we felt like it should be self service as had to go to the bar to ask if we could order our main course and then we had to do the same when we had chosen our deserts. We did wait for quite a while before doing this.It was very disappointing as previously we were well looked after. When my brother went to the bar the second time he was given a bill by mistake!! The food was very tasty but the meaning of customer service needs to be explained to the staff.

We love the New Inn for friendliness, atmosphere, and really good food, but the Philpott's recently provided a buffet lunch for a family diamond wedding anniversary celebration. The food was superb, and having someone to cook, serve and clear up was just so lovely and enabled us to relax. Guests were very happy, as were the celebrating couple!

Having previously had a Sunday roast on Mothers day (group of 8) which was excellent (2017), we have tried a couple of times to phone and book, only to find the pub fully booked.

Visited for Sunday lunch after reading the great reviews. What can I say, unwelcoming! It definitely felt like if you weren’t “local”, you were an “outsider”.......Every trip to the bar to order drinks, my husband or our friend became invisible. There wasn’t a single smile from any member of staff or a cursory “How was your meal?”

Won’t be back - coffee ok but woeful miserable staff. A smile, a bit of engagement, even eye contact makes a difference - you want to feel welcome rather than an intruder. Surely when money is tight places realise they might have to go that bit extra to encourage people to go back.

Unfortunately unable to review accomodation, food or service as we were double booked. Apparently landlords wife responsible for this so she was summoned. Landlord then completely ignored us and didnt even offer us a seat let alone an apology, this was left to his wife. She didnt seem well and was apparently in hospital at the time of our booking. She went away, 20 mins later produced £140 to cover the cost at premier inn who had ample availability and she had phoned them. Premier Inn denied any phone calls from Helen. They had one room which went whilst we were trying to book it. Plenty of certificates of awards, shame they are so old and tatty like the pub. I hate being lied to but rudeness, lies and facing a night in the car... Dont book here, disgraceful performance. Tired and niaive, should have insisted they booked it in front of us! Took the edge off Bath Christmas market tbh!

We popped in this cafe during our 80 mile walk for some much needed hot food . The staff were fantastic, especially the waitress who couldn’t help us enough
