If you like traditional pubs, thatched cottages, and a really warm welcome from Mark and Teresa, your hosts, then look no further than the New Inn. You feel the warmth immediately you walk through the door. As you walk round to the bar you are greeted by “Captain” the parrot who is the longest serving resident at 40 years old. Being freehold, with no ties to any particular brewery, there is a wide choice of beers, ales and ciders and they're all excellent. The food is traditional country pub and is cooked and prepared by Mark and Teresa who do an absolutely amazing job. In my opinion the food being of excellent quality. Although I haven't stayed in any of the rooms I do know that they were all refurbished very recently and having spoken to people that have stayed the comments have always being excellent. Mark and Teresa always take time to try and chat with their customers and make them feel welcome. If you have any particular requests then they will always do their best to accommodate if at all possible. Another welcoming aspect is that they are pet friendly even having dog biscuits on the bar, free to their customers. A testament to their welcoming approach is the number of people from the local area that visit time after time. The impressive thing is that Mark and Teresa always manage to remember each individual's name. I can't recommend this wonderful, ancient, traditional thatched pub, highly enough. You won't be disappointed.

I had the pleasure of staying here for two nights on the 30th and 31st of July 2023. The room was amazing and very spacious. Even though I was staying alone there was a good sized comfortable double bed which was great as I do like the extra room to be able to stretch out. The bathroom was a wet room with a double headed shower. The staff were so welcoming and very polite and sociable. I had a steak dinner on my first night which was cooked to perfection and a decent sized meal, which was good as I do like my food. Even the locals that came in the bar at night were very welcoming and also sociable. The conversation was flowing which was nice as I was staying there on my own. In the morning I had a full English breakfast which again was cooked just right. There was a choice of cereals if you wanted that option. Also in the bar area they have a parrot called captain and believe it or not he also welcomed me with a “hello mate” lol I would definitely recommend this Inn if your are traveling to the area and if and when I’m back this way I will definitely be rebooking a room here. I can not think of a single negative thing about my stay. Well done to the New Inn and your staff.

What a treat we had staying here! Stayed only one night but was lovely! Superb dinner, all freshly home cooked food. I would say all of us staying that it was one of the nicest meals we have had in a long long time. Rooms were lovely, beds very comfortable. Breakfast was sooo good, excellent! Nothing was too much trouble and we had a couple of picky eaters! The hosts were great, even the parrot was a lovely addition ! Thank you very much for a lovely stay!

We had a delicious Mother’s Day Roast lunch. The staff went above and beyond to cater for my gluten free diet, even providing a gluten free Yorkshire pudding! The attentiveness of the front of house staff was amazing and the extra’s such as Mothering Day ginger biscuits from a local bakery & home made truffles was excellent. We will definitely return.

We spent two nights here, in this unique 13th century inn, in rural Devon, but close to both Exeter and Dartmoor. The room was spotless and spacious, and the bed extremely comfortable, with all the facilities you need. The food was good, breakfast impressive, and the inn- keepers friendly and welcoming. If we return to this area we’d definitely book again!

A lovely setting with plenty of parking. Interior clean and comfortable. The lady who served us was professional and kind especially when i asked for more gravy. The menu was disappointing . Unfortunately the steak pie contained some tough meat, and too many chips were served. Compared with the restaurants in my Berkshire area i feel the meal was expensive

MORE AT TripAdvisor

Arrived after booking on a booking website( our first time). We couldn’t open our door, so eventually found a lady who said she send the landlord round to us. He opened our door very sarcastically, I just thought eccentric ? Room was clean however smelt So damp !! Around 5 lethargic flies were in our bathroom too. Our friends were staying in another room ( we were part of a rugby weekend for our children) but booked separately and coincidentally We decided to go in to Exeter to eat. When we came back we had a few drinks (3x glasses of Pinot, two small red wine, coffee, tea and 2 cokes), which my husband paid for in cash that night. The lady was new and said she had put it on the wrong table. The land lord (whilst drinking a Pinot noir that was poured instead of Pinot Grigio - NOT HIS FIRST) wobbled over and said he would sort it in the morning not a problem he saw we had paid for everything. Breakfast was lovely ! More than enough and the granola and yoghurt was divine ! And the lady who served was very very nice ! We left to get to rugby … we were under the impression that the booking website had sorted out payment as they took card numbers etc etc …. We got a frantic phone call from our friend as she was not allowed to leave as we had not paid our bill ? Why not call us ? He had all our information ? She was audibly upset he was demanding nearly £300!!! Our room was only around £130??? (I can’t remember the exact amount but it was t expensive including breakfast) She said she was going to pay it… I demanded to speak to the man ! Obviously we wouldn’t have left our friends if we were running from the bill! He said we had not settled our dinner bill ? What dinner bill?We argued back and fourth until I reminded him of what took place and how he couldn’t stand! I said we will pay over the phone and not a problem! And re stated that we were sorry he should have called us and not scared friends! And think about things logically ? He then started shouting there was going to be a massive fee for using our card ? I said go on what’s your fee … he then screamed a £1! ?? Again I mean seriously? Massive fee? All he went on about was the cost of using a debit card ?hence we paid for our drinks in cash…. If we hadn’t been setting up for a tournament and my friends being held against their will I would have argued or driven back just because of his disgusting attitude !At the end of the day our friends booked different days times etc etc nothing to do with us ! Any person could have seen it was a genuine mistake ! Maybe the landlord shouldn’t drink his profits and spend it on the room? Shame because it could be lovely . WONT BE BACK! I have been meaning to write this for a while, however when I write a bad review I like to have time to contemplate

Stayed here as a base for 2 nights while we were at a wedding. Drove down from Manchester and had to confirm in advance arrangements for late arrivals. The gentleman on the phone was incredibly helpful and accommodating. Great clear directions to the B&B plus ample parking arrangements on site. Rooms are clean, tidy and well maintained. All the essentials you’d expect are present and I’m confident if anything was missing the staff would have no trouble sorting it. I love the eco/sustainability measures that the owners are trying to implement. It really makes me want to stay here again. Breakfast is freshly made, tasty and hosted by a lovely cheery lady who couldn’t do enough for us. Having never been to Devon before I’d happily come back and stay here again for longer to make the journey worthwhile. Captain the resident parrot kept my 8 year old entertained! Note: if I’d have realised that cash was cheaper for them to process I’d have come prepared. Credit cards have the largest costs and debit cards a little smaller. If you can afford to change your payment method I’d recommend doing so. Thanks to all the staff who made our stay welcome and lovely xx

We visited the pub for a family lunch and I can honestly say it is the worse food I have ever been served. I was utterly shocked by what was served to us. The poor children’s Macaroni cheese you couldn’t and would not eat it, it tasted burnt and I presume then re heated in a microwave where it was cold in the middle, the cheese was curled. The chips I can not explain fully but I am guessing they have not changed the oil for a long time .. as they tasted of fish and left an awful after taste. The meat “steak” pie was very chewy. All in all it was disgusting. I have never written a bad review before but I have never had such horrid food anywhere. This used to be such a lovely pub I would highly recommend new kitchen staff. And as expected the whole family have had upset bellies. I still can’t get over what was served to us. Definitely won’t be revisiting.

Rather like New College in Oxford, the New Inn is remarkably old... low ceilings and weathered beams create a suitably atmospheric milieu in which to eat and drink. When we arrived for lunch, there was, however, only one other party in the place - and they were seated outside - but we were not able to sit in the restaurant due to the dog. Fortunately there was plenty of space in the bar area and the menu was the same so no harm done. Although it was not busy we waited 30 minutes before someone took our order; indeed another party came in after us and were able to order before us, which was somewhat perplexing. The food took another 30 minutes. Our party had ordered a variety of dishes, ranging from fish & chips, veggie burger, lamb burger and vegetables with couscous to a Sunday Roast (beef). The fish and chips went down well, but the burgers (both lamb and veggie) were less well received; the buns were tough and the flavour bland. The couscous was fine. The Roast beef was accompanied by all the trimmings and was pronounced good. The kids took pudding which was suitably demolished. The service was friendly but bafflingly slow, particularly given that there seemed to be no shortage of staff.

I went for lunch with a friend, the meal was lovely but I was very disappointed to see that the pub was still using PLASTIC STRAWS and the sauces were in plastic squeazy tubes, why do pubs find it necessary, it would be so easy to either put in ramekin dishes or use glass bottles. It would be so much cheaper for them and we shouldn’t be using plastic unnecessarily. Go plastic free in July. Ask for your drink and say no straw please.

On Tuesday 29 January my wife and I went to the New Inn for supper arriving there about 8.30pm. Having visited the New Inn before and been impressed with both service and quality of food we were extremely disappointed to find that the standards of both appear to have fallen dramatically. We ordered drinks and food - my wife chose fish and chips and I selected scampi. My wife's fish was white but certainly not cod but then the menu did not state cod. However the fish, which did not seem to be particularly fresh, had not been skinned before being battered and under the batter was awash with oil. The batter was soggy - as was the batter on my scampi. The chips were not crisp. We ordered Irish coffees and were brought ordinary coffees, The staff then brought us Irish coffees the cream of which had been aerated - presumably the lazy way of ensuring the cream does not mix with the coffee. Finally, although the pub was not busy, the service was slow - certainly not the standard we had experienced on earlier visits. To add to our poor experience there was a table of anti social young women who spent the whole time shrieking with laughter and were clearly disinterested in the other guest in the restaurant. All in all very disappointing.

Owner is a nice enough chap and it has a nice small garden in the summer (needs a good trimming though) with plenty of parking. Bad news is the parrot (Captain) can be noisy and food has taken a dive in quality recently. I think they have changed chef recently who is not a patch on the lady that used to be there. Visited The New Inn November 2014. Blackboard menu, printer wasn't working apparently, queued behind 4 other guests, trying to peer over shoulders to read. I'm not particularly fussy over food, but the menu was odd. Variety of Moroccan dishes, duck dishes, 3 fish dishes, some veggie. Not a single chicken dish to offer!?Chose gammon - very thinly sliced, very salty. With chips, no salad or jacket potato option.Other half chose cod & chips with peas. To be fair, I did try his cod and that was quite nice. Bog standard pub food - sausage and mash ( dressed up cider sauce), lasagne - with chips - think someone needs to do a re-think on the menu. Overcharged by a quid on other half's meal - how?? So they lost out on a tip I'm afraid. Cost almost £30 for what I would class as a mid week meal at home. And that included a glass of wine. Not impressed.

We went on a midweek night when it was quiet (and cold - the fire wasn't lit). The menu was quite limited and rather old-style and unimaginative, but that's ok if done well and it suits this place. We had the soup - good but so hot it was almost unsafe, and samosas (tasty but very oily). Then the balti - reasonable portion size but poor quality, very bland, cook-in sauce style, little evidence of seasoning, and cod and chips - the (very small) cod was in chewy (certainly not crisp) batter and the chips were ok at best. We didn't finish either main course. The host took note of our comments and did not charge for one meal - so perhaps it was a bad night. On reflection we aren't sure who this place is hoping will visit - at these prices you can get proper fresh-cooked food from an interesting menu from a number of places around here; or if you want good old-style pub food you can get similar (and maybe better) food at better prices at several places around here. So we will not be going back.

Dropped in to this pub with friends for a couple of drinks on a bank holiday Sunday...big mistake. This pub is a beautiful thatched Devon inn but the hospitality leaves a lot to be desired. We arrived at 8.00 pm and the pub was a little quiet. We had a couple of rounds and at 10.35 went to order our final round only to be told that the bar had shut at 10.30... Without final orders. When asked why the bar staff hadn't called final orders we were told that they never do. Clearly the staff did not want to work any more. My son had warned me the bar lady was miserable....and he was correct. The pub had been quite, they had a couple staying the night who were told that by the bar lady that she had already locked the route to their room ( and was not happy they were come back later....well 10.15) . This pub is beautiful but is so disappointing as the publican clearly does not understand what is missing or how good it could be. It is a good example of why local pubs are dying.... Poor hospitality, no atmosphere, pricy food .. I could go on!.......

Only stopped for a Sunday lunchtime drink, but we could see from the most attractive garden and the flagstone main bar that it is a fine pub with excellent beers and no doubt a great dining experience. The talkative parrot would agree!

We called in by chance on a Monday lunchtime. It has a beautiful setting - thatched roof, beautiful garden with a stream, exposed beams in the actual pub - everything... Very picturesque pub in a lovely village.Neither of us was over-hungry, so we just had a snack. The woman who took our order was happy to discuss what we wanted, and seemed to know the food very well. Maybe the landlady? Very friendly and professional. We'll go back. The lovely lady even gave us a card so we can phone ahead to see if they have moules 'on' next time we go. And we'll take friends.

Called in on off-chance on a Friday evening. Pleasant setting in hamlet surrounded by typical undulating Devon farmland. The food was very poor. Distinct impression that no one cared about the quality. Left wishing that we had gone home and made scrambled eggs on toast. At least it would have been freshly cooked.

We recentlyy had a holiday in Devon and by chance visited The New Inn for dinner. It's a hotel with a pub/restaurant. A very traditional pub decor with bar area and proper dining area. The food is of very good quality and presented nicely, like you would get in a proper restaurant. There is a parrot (Captain) who gave us (and our dog) some entertainment. Strongly recommend it!

We arrived at The New Inn looking for a Sunday Lunch and were not disappointed. We didn't have to book in advance or reserve, not sure if we should have done because it was quite busy, but there were tables available. We ordered our food, did not have to wait too long. The food was well presented and tasted good. The atmosphere was pleasant comfortable and warm . The staff and landlord were friendly. Overall a very good experience.

This pub was a great find. Wonderful friendly welcome. Lovely atmosphere and in the true tradition of the English Pub. We went for Sunday lunch and there was a good choice of food, you didn't have to have a roast there were other things on the menu. The dessert was fantastic, we shared one which was a mistake because I could have eaten a whole one, a sponge that was light and fluffy. We have found another favourite place to go.

Ate here on Easter Sunday after healthy walk in the morning. Lovely location and friendly staff - we were 45 min early for our reservation but that was not a problem. Nice variety of good pub food (roasts and also vegetarian options) including sticky toffee pudding. The Otter beer was excellent. Can't comment on the bedrooms - but recommended for the pub.

Directed to this pub, as the nearest, by my Sat Nav when touring the area. Really enjoyed the visit, range of local beers and a good menu, many locally sourced ingrediants. However having had a full english just a few hours before, i ordered cheese and mushroom omlette, but asked if they could forget the trimmings which they did, and gave me a generous discount which i had not asked for - nice gesture. Initially i had thought they had a difficult customer in the other bar, before realising it was a parrot! - Ref'd to in previous reviews. An amazing bird, who welcomes customers and asks what they want, chatted away for half an hour or so, inc sound impressions of a ringing telephone being answered. Deserves a slot on Britains got talent

I hadn't been to this pub for a few years as it had a reputation of being very overpriced. With new owners, the prices are more sensible and the quality of food is very good. We visited one Sunday lunchtime with a party of six, and the service was excellent.

Whenever I visit I always worry the extent of the menu will mean the quality is poor, but I'm always wrong. Factor in entirely reasonable pricing and overall you have really good value with a gret friendly atmosphere to go with it.

Regularly visit The New Inn and the staff provide a consistently excellent and welcoming service. Food is always surprisingly good – apparently they have a proper chef in house all the time! Get past the dry humoured landlord and everyone’s warm and welcoming. Well worth a trip, slightly off the usual tourist trail.

What a great place to eat! Very warm welcome from the landlord and staff. We ordered our drinks and sat beside the woodburner. We then ordered our food from a good and varied menu. The restaurant was busy, and our food arrived within good time and piping hot. My husband had the home made fish cakes and said, "they were delicious!" I had the steak and otter ale pie and couldnt fault it! We followed it with home made desserts, YUMMY! And can honestly say we think this is the best quality food for the money in Mid Devon. We are looking forward to going again!!!!!!!!

If you are looking for a traditional pub with a great menu that ranges from modern British right through to oriental stir fries, The New Inn is perfect. Open fires and a range of cosy seating and dining areas mean you can always find the perfect spot. The service is super friendly and professional and the prices are very fair. Outside there are lovely seating areas by a stream and there is ample parking. Recommended not least for Captain the handsome parrot who will speak, if you talk to him nicely.

I stayed at the New Inn in November, my first visit for nearly 10 years, due to a change of job, which takes me to the West Country far less frequently. My room was clean, comfortable and well furnished, opening onto a pretty courtyard. I was quite surprised to be the only guest, though, given the time of year, the weather and the fact it was a Monday night, perhaps that shouldn't have been so startling. The welcome was warm and friendly. After settling in, I made my way to the bar for a pint of Otter (highly recommended) and an evening meal. I was delighted to see that my old friend Captain the parrot was still in residence. He greeted me with his usual repertoire of phrases and made me feel quite at home.As for the food. I started with fresh chicken livers. Very tasty in a sauce that was so tasty that I was tempted to show my lowly upbringing by asking for some bread to mop it up. I then had Scampi, which was fresh and very acceptable. I finished with a creme brûlée, with made the anticipated cracking noise when the sugar crust was lightly tapped, and tasted quite delicious. A few more pints of Otter and it was back to my room for a comfortable night.Breakfast was tasty and substantial with plenty of choices.I regret that I don't get to travel in this area very much these days, but I would hope to return to the New Inn soon.

We had read about The New Inn in the 2011 Devon Food and Drink magazine and that they had a a parrot called Captain who had been greeting the customers at the pub for over 27 years. Captain did not disappoint he was charming and friendly. Unfortunately the landord/owner 'George' had not picked up any charm from 'Captain' in his three and a half years at The New Inn.We arrived at 1.30pm on a late July Tuesday lunchtime, the place was close to empty freezing cold and it was 'Fish Fest Week' we ordered drinks a diet Coke and a pint of San Miguel lager which was completed flat and semi cold. We were both offered menus and the specials board was explained to us. We opted for a starters of a Mediterranean Salad at £5.75 and Seared King Scallops and Sizzling Bacon with seasonal salad at £8.95. Both salads looked exactly the same lettuce cucumber tomatoes onion but the scallops were poor value and overcooked what appeared to be one and a half sliced fried scallops. Our main courses seemed a wise choice bearing in mind the lack lustre starters I was glad I had chosen Scampi and Chips, scampi was standard issue average back street 1970's food quality with cheap poor quality catering chips all for £10.75. My wife chose from the 'Fish Fest' menu a Bouillabaisse at £11.25 when it arrived it looked like oily river water and was lacking in the fish described, this was inedible well it would have been if their had been anything in it to eat. After forty five minutes we decided we had had enough. We went to the bar and were asked by a very friendly young lady if everything had been alright we said no and explained our experience she apologised and said she would go and get George the manager. She returned alone saying that she would not charge us for the Bouillabaisse but George did not come back with her? I the said what about the Scallops she then went away again and said she would also not charge for the scallops. This time George appeared waving his arms and saying that there was actually TWO whole king scallops here and he had instructed the chef to serve two I said it LOOKED like one and a half sliced scallops he continued to wave his arms and say well thats how we serve them before marching off in the opposite direction? I am told by STAFF hes not the best Landlord theyve had and we werent the first to complain.we dont want complimentary food we want good food and good service maybe George will improve with time after all he has only been at The New Inn for three and a half years unlike the charming Captain in his twenty seventh year

Old world inn that has a good feel and service but the food is dull. We have been here several times and always felt welcome, with the staff being very willing and the dining area comfortable an quite interesting. Childeren are catered for with separate menus and high chairs are provided if required. The courses are widely chosen with at least two vegetarian options, and on our last visit three fish dishes. Local sourcing is apparant but not as important as some places. However the range is not very ambitious. There is usually a daily menu and a set menu. It has good parking and an extensive outside eating area that in good weather is really nice to sit out in. it is quite pricey for what you get, for six adults who only had the main course the bill came to £97 without drinks.

Telephoned to book and said that we may be bringing a dog. We were told that dogs were not allowed in the dining room which was fair enough, however we could eat in the bar. As there were 5 of us we decided not to take the dog and I rang and told them so and asked to book the dining area. When we arrived I went to the dining area to be greeted by a rather large dog, (which turned out to be the owners,) which was slobbering everywhere as it walked around the room. I then found out that we had been put in the bar. We then had to walk through the dining room to where the food was being served and then back into the bar which was becoming busy. We were sat around a table in the middle of the bar with people constantly back and forth. It was a nightmare. Needless to say we won’t be returning

Our first time at the Lamb for a while, and sadly it didn't live up to expectations. The pub had long been known for great locally produced food, great beer with a warm and lively atmosphere. We visited mid-week and found the experience to be rather underwhelming. The menu has some wonderful dishes on it, alongside some pub classics - not exciting, but a solid menu. We ordered a variety of starters and mains. The waitress returned to our table to deliver our food and told us there had been a mistake in the kitchen and that the mains were being prepared to come out with or before the starters. It seems to us that the chef wanted to go home promptly, as the kitchen closed at 8pm and this was as around 1945. My wife had the cod tacos and they were brilliant - tasty, well presented and truly creative. My children had the kids beef burgers and I had a chicken burger. The burgers weren't great. The children's burger was just a plain burger in a bap, (no option for cheese etc). They both complained the burger was dry. My chicken burger was tasty, but the chicken was overcooked and therefore quite tough on the edges. The chips were fantastic! Dessert was good. We were informed the kitchen had no cream and that meant a couple of the dishes were off/needing to be adapted. Three tasty puddings (ice creams and the sundae) arrived and were enjoyed by all. Overall it fell below expectations. Perhaps our expectations were too high, but it isn't a shadow of what it once was. I hope our visit was not typical. The Lamb holds a special place in my heart and it is painful to write a review that isn't gushing with admiration. But sadly it was the worst meal we had out this week. Another local pub the following night showed us just what was missing. A plea to the Lamb team - rather than defending criticism and feedback (which your reviews are full of), embrace it and improve. It's an amazing spot but it isn't hitting the mark at present. It can be so much more than it is today.

Enjoyed a delicious meal at Penquen Fish Bar! The cod was enormous and perfectly cooked—so fresh and tasty. The chips were equally great, crispy on the outside and soft inside. Overall, a fantastic takeaway experience. Highly recommend this spot for anyone craving quality fish and chips!"
