Bluebell Restaurant in Mid Devon

We live locally and have given this place a visit on a good few times so the staff sort of know us. On the good side As long as they are not busy things are wonderful. Reasonable prices for fair to generous sized portions. Staff friendly and helpful (one of us has dietary problems). Not too long a wait for our orders to be served. First class carvery on days that it is served. On the bad side. Rude, rude, rude On three occasions we were treated very badly when they were busy possibly because they simply did not have enough staff to cope. On all occasions they were fairly quick to get us seated with or without the menu. Then we were ignored. No eye contact, no apologies or explanations as to how long we were going to have to wait. On one occasion we were told to sit at a particular table when there were plenty empty. Explanation was that they had not had the time to clean/prepare the others. Then we were left. Another time we were sat waiting to place an order when a waitress was standing at a table next to us idle chit chatting away for an indecently long period to the couple (sounded like regulars). Third time we had chosen our meal at our table and had been waiting some time for waitress to take our order when at least half a dozen workmen walked in and placed their orders at the counter. After that we were ignored/forgotten. On all three occasions we walked out. Such a shame as they can be so good and yet so bad. Think we might give them a chance once again but I suspect it might be some time before we do that.

Breakfasts are excellent value for money with a wide range available. I particularly like the veggie sausages.

Order took half hour to arrive which is astonishing considering how little is actually in the baps. 1 rasher bacon, some sort of mini cocktail sausage... the remainder of the order was incorrect but I'd already got the pox and just took what turned up

Took 10 mins to take our order, then served coffee and told no orange juice, so had pot of tea instead which was like warm and stained cup! Proceeded to sit for a further 30 minutes to then be told no tomato for cheese and tomato toasties. Gave up and left without eating! Teribble service and will not be recommending to anyone! Wasn't even busy!

Brilliant restaurant. Lovely atmosphere and decor, very festive for our (2 person) visit in December. Greeted by very friendly staff and were led to a table immediately even though the room was at what looked like above average customer levels. Ordered 1 large and 1 small drink, both reasonably priced, and both came out quickly. Food order taken after drinks, 1 large meal from the lunch menu, and 1 small carvery. Very accommodating to preferences and requests, food came out at the expected pace, hot, flavourful, and well presented. Slightly slower on carvery but appears to be a one-time mishap in communication between kitchen staff. Carvery was appetising to look at and tasted lovely, with a great range of vegetables and sides, crisp potatoes, and tender meat. Both meals were reasonably priced for the quality. The end price for 2 meals and 2 drinks was £24.45. Overall, this restaurant is in a prime location, plenty of parking, friendly staff, great food and service, and a warm and inviting atmosphere. Will happily make a return visit if I'm in the area and would highly recommend it to all ages.

Wow great breakfast, friendly staff

The Bluebell is a real hidden treasure! I walked down there whilst my car was having some work done, about a mile away and was ready to give up trying to find it - but am really glad I didn't. The reception was warm and friendly and the service and food were excellent. No long wait for my food either. What added to the pleasure though, was the fact that it was a place where locals of all ages clearly went for a meal and to meet friends. (Extremely well-behaved!) Children were offered lollipops by the ladies who served at the tables and different groups were greeting each other and talking between tables. The food is delicious, plentiful and well presented. The coffee is just right and, for dessert, I treated myself to an excellent Farmer Tom's ice cream, which is produced in Devon.

We've got Sunday Roast, really good. The pudding was amazing (apple pie). The service was great!

Excellent customer service so friendly and attentive,lovely and clean and the food was very well presented on the plate and the coffee was exactly as requested . I did not get the young man's name he was the taller of the two and seemed to be in charge but what a great ambassador for the establishment,thank you we will visit again Pete and Diane.

Got to restaurant. Could not serve us for half an hour as biker group in. Big restaurant with loads of empty tables.

Really good quality carvery. Loved it! Unusual that you can watch cars refuel while you eat.

We booked ahead for a carvery on Saturday lunch time for a group of 18. The carvery was excellent. Staff polite, helpful and efficient. I would definitely visit again

Always top notch food. Recommend the all day breakfast, especially if you are a builder or a lorry driver because the restaurant is right behind the Willand petrol station.

It's a lovely quiet place. We had the breakfast it was all fried bar the beans but it was tasty. The servers were very nice and helpful. The toilets were spotless too. Great for families.

Was visiting a job near by and decided to drop in here for breakfast, I have to be honest the breakfast was really good. Appeared to be butchers sausages and bacon all good quality ingredients. My only gripe was the temperature of the food could have been hotter, maybe you are not heating your plates, but apart from that really good, reasonably priced and staff were helpful

Had a lovely breakfast here. Bacon sandwich was well filled and we were offered a table outside as we had our dog. Staff were friendly and helpful. We’ve stopped here before and will be happy to return.

So, I don’t even know how to start this. I had came down with my grandparents from Cornwall thinking this would be a nice little catch-up so we had got there and the meal itself was okay but slow and was below required temperature (not hot enough) and the most shocking thing is that this waitress was very disrespectful and horrible so I really don’t recommend and we was very disappointed.

Beautiful home cooked Sunday lunch. Have visited here for a Sunday dinner over the last 2 years. Leave feeling full and super happy with meal served. The meat is outstanding every time.

Just passed by, got in and asked do you do fried breakfast at 12.30pm? Yes of course, the lady said with a warm friendly welcoming smile. So I sat down and ordered a classic, perfectly cooked quality ingredients, and a generous plate, nice espresso too. On top of that a warm place, relaxed comfy atmosphere. Highly recommended if you're driving by, stop, relax and enjoy 😉

Was told it was a nice place to eat so thought I would give it a go, unfortunately I will not be returning, the young workers were pleasant enough but the food let it down majorly I am afraid, cheap as can get sausages beans were luke warm at best and I asked for poached egg which they had on the menu and it was with out a doubt put in the microwave! That to me is just lazy and it looked inedible, shame really 😕

Lots of parking here, breakfast is good, also they have a popular carvery.

Would have had an excellent rating if the customer service was better. We Visited for a Sunday carvery. First time we’d been there and we reserved a table as we were told it gets busy. Was directed to the table no problem there at all. Sat and waited for 15 mins for a waitress to come over but in the end we called one over ourselves. Placed drink order then when the drinks arrived asked if we could order food. Food order taken, was then told yes we could go up and get our food. The waitresses were kind and curtious however I felt that the server was quite rude. She asked if we had a ticket, which we hadn’t, asked if we placed our order which we had and was then told to sit back down and wait to be called as we would be Called up one at a time and told this isn’t a Toby carvery you know.!!!!! I felt her attitude and tone was quite rude. Given the fact that no one had explained anything to us and we’d never been there before so first time experience so far pretty naff. However redemption was the food itself. The beef was cooked to perfection and melted in your mouth. Proper crispy potatoes and a choice of boiled new ones as well. A great selection of veg and fantastic gravy made with meat juices. The plates were hot, food piping hot and I enjoyed every mouthful. I had apple pie and custard for desert, would have licked the bowl clean if I could have!! My bill was a little over £60 and for 4 of us that was pretty reasonable. This place is worth a visit simply for the quality of food and we will visit again, just some staff need to work on their customer service skills!

Stopped here for a quick lunch and a pee break. Fortunately we had already ordered coffee before daring to use the bathrooms. Came out to find the owner kicking someone out and calling them a “cheeky bitch” for wanting to use the toilet without buying anything. Toilets themselves were pretty grim but luckily the owner then put up a sign helpfully informing the general public that the toilets were for customers only, so hopefully they’ll have more time to clean them now. There were also multiple tubs of brown water sitting on the floor seemingly from a ceiling leak. They’d closed off half the tables, not the half near the leaky roof though. Despite the 5* entertainment we decided not to risk the food since I’m convinced by the food safety rating based on the tubs of ceiling juice. Well worth a visit if you want to witness absolute carnage and some cheap entertainment. Hope to never go back but grateful to have experienced it.

Went in, to be told it was 20 minutes just to order. 40 mins later we had still only had a coffee. We had to leave. As did at least 10 other people. Not sure what was going on. But didn't have tue time.

Excellent very friendly staff who took a few mins out of their busy day to have a chat. Had the lite Breakfast with a few healthy extras which was excellent and just enough for me. Large car park and a relaxed atmosphere. Certainly will be back for more business meetings. Thank u ladies

Great food reasonable prices busy Friday

We paid a visit to the Bluebell restaurant for breakfast and ordered 2 latte's and 2 breakfasts. The waiting staff were efficient and the drinks arrived quickly after placing our order. The food when it arrived was nicely presented on the plate but unfortunately the fried egg was like a bullet and the remaining food was luke warm and certainty would not have reached 63 degrees had it been probed before served. Very disappointing.

Petrol area could do with a good clean UP

Only stopped for a drink to get out of the rain while waiting for bus. Good service, nice atmosphere, there was a carvery which looked tasty and seemed very popular.

This restaurant is situated behind a petrol service station, so keep your eye open for it if you’ve never been to it before. Friendly staff, fantastic carvery with a choice of 4 meats & great value for money.

Popped in for a quick lunch. Very very nice place. Clean, friendly, beautiful fresh food. Amazing menu and they offer a carvery from Tuesday to Friday (2 meats) and Sunday (4 meats). Totally unexpected and very impressed

Had a rare day off with my husband and we always go to Bluebell for breakfast, this time though we decided to try the lunch menu. Completely forgot that it gets busy and as we didnt book the chef was going to open up the other half of the restaurant for us, however there was a space for 2 nearby so we sat there saves them having to open up especially for us. The roast looked too good to refuse so we both had carvery. The meats were Turkey, beef or Pork with yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, boiled potatoes, parsnips, cabbage, green beans, peas, roasted carrots and cauliflower cheese. It tasted so good and shame i couldnt fit more on the plate. Desserts i had chocolate ice cream and husband had a meringue nest with ice cream. Price was reasonable, staff lovely and great atmosphere too. Plenty of parking also.

Always popular. Recently went for breakfast mid-morning. Already people coming in for lunch. Excellent value, popular with locals, friendly service, plenty of room.

Ordered 2 classic breakfasts with poached eggs, didn’t have to wait long, but when they came out the eggs were hard, asked the waitress if I could have a runny poached egg, she took my plate and a waiter bought it back again with another hard poached egg!!! Also asked for a one shot latte as they have a proper coffee machine, they made the latte with hot milk and then topped it up with filter coffee. Probably won’t revisit.

We love coming here for Breakfast, staff are pleasant and restaurant is clean.Breakfast arrived within minutes and it tasted really good. They cater for everyone with lots on the menu at good prices.We will bring our kids up to try the lunch menu and they will love the food there as much as we love the breakfast.A definite must visit.

We decided last minute to go Bluebell for Breakfast and having been here many times before we know we are going to have a lovely breakfast and be leaving full.The lady was pleasant and welcoming she took our order and within 10 mins we was eating breakfast.(2 bigger breakfast). Theres plenty on the menu and they cater for children too. The carvery gets very busy so make aure you book prior to your visit. Plenty of parking too.Definitely recommend

We had booked a table, waited to be served, not forthcoming so left and went to a friendly local,lucky escape.

Excellent food plenty to chose from at reasonable prices. Nice and airy very clean looking. Only downside is they close rather early especially at the weekend. Would have like to have visited if an evening with my husband.

Arrived at 14.30pm today and we were turned away. Told th at lunch had finished. It said 4pm closing on the door.

Went for a Sunday lunch carvery.Excellent! nice selection of meat and veg and you can pile your plate as high as you like! the veg great, especially the cauliflower cheese.The cost , very reasonable less than £10 a head with a drink. Grteat value and pleasant staff who were very attentive.Will go again

This was our 3rd visit for breakfast and we left feeling full and thoroughly enjoyed our meal.

Stopped here for breakfast and the food was excellent.Was a little pricey for what you got,a small sausage and 3 bits of mushroom was a little disappointing but the service made up for this.

we always made feel so welcome even greeted today by a brolly due to bad rain this place has homely feel about it nothing is too much trouble for any staff we been few times and food always amazing carvey is so good tried pudding today for 1st time and was lovely warm choc cake and custard perfect i have been in wheelchair and walked in easy get around in wheelchair and on foot with mobility issues staff very patient with me due my health issues i can't always get words out easy so takes time want thank every1 here and can't wait come back x

This place is mainly a lunch time restaurant but they will cater for large parties in the evening if booked. The food is excellent and the service first class with friendly staff. Highly recommended

Popped out here for lunch on a Thursday as it's local. Haven't been here for a while and it's much improved since my last visit. Had a carvery which was very good. Not stingy with the meat (like some places) and a good choice of veg. Roast spuds were on the hard side otherwise would have given it a 5. Plenty of parking. Nice interior and very good staff.

Popped up to the Bluebell for breakfast, having never visited before I was unsure of what to expect, no worries. The restaurant was clean tidy we received prompt and efficient service with a good quality breakfast, the sausage was not the best but I guess that is down to personal taste.

Once again a fabulous roast lunch. Meat cooked to perfection and the vegetables on offer would satisfy the most awkward customer. 😊😊

A good location for access for a good lunchtime meal or snack especially with older relatives. The Self service Carvery has always been first class and available in 2 portion sizes with a good selection of well cooked fresh vegetables . Lots of choices on the regular menu and specials board - Staff always friendly and helpful

Good value as really good portions. The veggie sausages were the diced vegetable type though - much prefer the imitation ones. My mate's meat version was apparently very good too. The "fizzy" drinks were flat though.Decent though for a roadside diner.

One of our coffee stops when out cycling. Friendly staff with nice selection of snacks.Never had the carvery but it looked very nice.

Stopped here for a breakfast on a Tuesday late morning.The staff were lovey and friendly and very helpful... we took a seat and we're served very quickly by a lovely waitress called Helen.The food was cooked well and piping hot and super value for money,will definitely be back again

Never felt so unwelcome in a place ever, serving staff were lovely , but a more senior member of staff ( manager/ owner) berated the person serving us because our trade was slowing down getting the carvery ready , she spoke to them angrily directly in front of us and told them they should have said no to us and passed by twice more dropping angry comments . The staff were suitably embarrassed . I was with a group of cyclists that use it regularly thinking we were always welcome , if the timing was inconvenient and we were told (nicely) before our orders were placed we would have been more than happy to move on .
