Culm Valley Inn in Mid Devon

Quite hard to rate this tbh. Despite the lowest rating I would stay again. The pub itself is excellent with excellent well kept ale and a nice atmosphere. The accommodation was a little more hit and miss. The room itself was absolutely fine, warm a good size and we were shown how to use the thermostat. Lights were subtle and pleasant though one side light didn't work, but equally it is cheap and affordable. Not enough towels provided, but on request we got more of these. No coffee in the shared kitchen and the WiFi was patchy to say the least. The boiler makes a low humming at night, so if like me these things bother you, worth investing in earplugs, but it didn't bother the rest of the family. However these are all fairly minor details and not something which bothers me overly with cheaper accommodation like this. The main issue was being locked out of the rooms on the evening of Christmas day alongside the other residents staying at the same time. That was pretty poor, but we did get it rectified fairly quickly; within about 45 minutes, it did help having local connections here as the other residents had been waiting an additional 30 minutes at least and had no such luck. Tbh makes an amusing story at least.

This place is a bit hit & miss, first up we sat down & wasn’t offered a drink till after 20 minute wait. Then ordering lunch was quite time consuming, food arrived after three quarters of an hour. Generous & tasty portions so it was worth the wait.

Jeez sat in it right now. Cold night. But a Couple word burners going. Nice pint. Good atmosphere. All good 😊

Five of us had a wonderful Sunday lunch at Colm valley Inn. The food was tasty, decor cosy and the welcome and service from the host was excellent. They were helpful and accommodating and we will certainly be back!

Fantastic. The fires were roaring, which was great, as the weather was bitterly cold. We were made to feel very welcome, and the staff were lovely...nothing was too much trouble. As for the food...oh my goodness. It was the best food I've ever had in a pub. I thanked the chef, as it was like eating in a restaurant....quality and skill. Very highly recommended......🙂

Great pub and Great atmosphere!

Recommended by some locals in the district so met some friends for lunch and a couple of drinks. Traditional country village pub, great location and well kept beers and ciders. No complaints on that score. Meals did not quite match the reputation expected. Starter Caesar salad a huge disappointment for a few lettuce leaves, croutons and a drizzle of dressing and at £7 a complete con. Burger and Fish and chips were standard pub fare. Fortunately a big thumbs up for the sticky toffee pudding and lemon posset helping to improve the score. The jury's out on value for money and inspiration - a return trip might take more persuasion.

If you're in the area then definitely check this place out. The food tastes amazing and the service is great. Really friendly staff. Would highly recommend if you're looking for somewhere to eat.

The manager is the loveliest lady, great atmosphere, kind staff, great to work for couldn’t ask for a company better. The chef does delicious food and with work around your intolerants. Highly recommend

I was really looking forward to visiting this village pub, but my experience was disappointing, largely due to the attitude of the blonde manager. While the pub itself has a nice atmosphere, her approach to customer service left a lot to be desired. She was abrupt and dismissive, which took away from what could have been an enjoyable evening. A bit more warmth and professionalism would go a long way in making guests feel welcome.i’m

Beautiful meal, good value, great service and quality of food

I was looking forward to going to this pub as always advertising a special dish menu on FB, this week I’ve had wellington monkfish flooding my FB so I thought that looks nice let’s go. Well it wasn’t on the menu, and neither were a couple of other choices, I had a choice between 3 Italian style dishes , a burger , which was off my list as I had one the day before , fish and chips, plaice in a mussels sauce or T-bone steak, but that was £42 which I felt was outside my budget. So I had the fish and chips, and my wife had tagliatelle beef ragu, both were fine , but nothing special and nothing worth driving out to the pub to get, the place was nice enough as were the staff but the food didn’t stand out as something special for me .

Cracking dinner with in laws .. Sam’s cider a treat with mussels 🦪 to share, steak🥩 and burgers 🍔 washed down with a hearty Bordeaux 🍷 Great service. We were well looked after .. definitely returning 🙏🏼

There is NO BREAKFAST at this b&b, no facilities in the rooms and no TV in the rooms so you are paying basically for a bed only. There is a poorly stocked kitchen and 2 shared bathrooms. Also someone was smoking in the kitchen as the smell and ash in the sink was a giveaway. Not the best.

Awful from start to finish Was seated at a table next to the kitchen door that was flapping open and shut all the time and it wasn’t a very nice view of the kitchen tbh We had to wait for over 30 minutes for a plate of bread and olives !!!! Had to ask for it in the end John Dory fish for main with no proper fish knife to debone it or plate to put the bones onto and a sirloin steak plonked on a plate of horrible chips with a handful of rocket with a pile of grated parmigiana on top The steak was not only inedible but wax so tough you couldn’t cut it even with a steak knife and it had a horrible smell/ taste Complained and was basically told that I was unlucky !!!!! Luckily I wasn’t charged for the steak ( not that I would have as it was so bad ) but that’s not the point the evening is ruined and you haven’t been fed Won’t be returning or recommending

Big group of 13 but food and service was ace and lovely room for us. Had the Sunday lunch, portion sizes were enormous but all exquisitely done. TVM and look forward to going again..

We visited this cute village pub when we were staying that way. We took a nice 4 mile walk over the moor and were not disappointed. Lovely food and welcoming staff.

So lucky to have this on the doorstep. Lovely walk up from Uffculme today for a delicious lunch of Moules and Frites. Highly recommend.

Limited menu on our visit, poor bar availability, although top money! Have all the fancy named ale glasses, but don’t sell the product, bar staff terrible attitude ! Didn’t give a monkeys!!!Overall poor and the food isn’t much better !!

Room basic, shared kitchen and bathrooms, no fire regs no alternative routes, netting in one bathroom meant people can see in. Did not tell us when they stopped serving food so went without a meal. Kitchen meats left in communal kitchen fridge. Mould in shower. Felt like you got nothing for the money you paid. Door was extremely difficult to lock if you even got it to lock and anyone could get upstairs overnight and get to the rooms. Not safe at all either by breaking or fire. Would NOT reccommend.

Lovely pub in a beautiful place, super food and service

Visited this pub a couple of times over a week. Closed at 3 when we were there but they let us take our drinks outside after they closed which was a pleasant surprise. Good selection of real ales and my wife had a burger which was huge!!!!! We went slightly out of season so it was very quiet. No complaints there😁😁 all in all a great pub to visit

First time here. The food was astonishingly good. Far, far exceeded our expectations. That is one talented chef! Everything we tried tasted fantastic and was cooked to perfection but a special shoutout to the gnocchi with chorizo - best thing I’ve eaten in years! The staff were attentive, courteous and made great recommendations. Really felt welcomed here. Had such a lovely evening and will definitely be a regular from now on. Plenty of parking. Was nice to finish off the meal with a little stroll by the river. Perfect 👌

Attended my step mums wake here. When it comes to food I am not the easiest to please, I love my food. They provided a hot and cold buffet, which was simply stunning. Homemade sausage rolls, scotch eggs, mini chicken Kiev, fresh sandwiches. To top it all scones that were simply out of this world. Next time I visit dad, I'll sample the breakfast.

Used to go here 2-3 times a week. Would park up, take the dogs for a walk and then pop in the pup for drinks and occasionally lunch. Then signs were put up saying your car will be clamped if not using the pub. Obvs we were using the pub but didn't want to risk getting clamped whilst walking the dogs. Stop off at the Ashill Inn instead on the way home.

Fantastic food, went for a birthday meal, tbone and sirloin cooked to perfection whole meal was excellent, would highly recommend and will definitely be back, friendly staff and warm atmosphere, I love a pub that keeps you warm, thank you for a lovely meal 😊

Food was good with friendly servers. Feels like a locals pub and was hard to get the attention of the bar staff.

The Devon (and a few Somerset) Austin 7 Club were hosted by the Culm Valley Inn today. 22 people in 14 vintage cars. Despite the fact that the pub is closing tomorrow for a fortnight's renovations, we were warmly welcomed, fed and watered. Food and service were superb. I am so proud to call this pub my local. Drivers had come from far and wide, but every single one said they would be back. Thank you Michelle, Johnny and team for being such fabulous hosts.

Sadly, I didn't eat here, but friendly staff & a great pint of Otter.

As a result of cancer, I have half a stomach, so we asked if we could share a meal. To our surprise, the chef gave us a plate each. The food was wonderful and well presented.

Lovely lunch here today sat next to the open fire. The place has a nice cozy feel to it and the staff were very friendly. The pub is located next to the medieval bridge and there's a lovely walk alongside the river Culm.

Sorry folks but disappointed again I'm afraid with the F&Cs. I could copy my last "disappointed" post back in May 2022 when my experience was exactly the same (why do I keep trying the F&Cs? The biggest chip was 1" long, the rest were what I call scrag ends, all the leftover bits and pieces when the chips have all gone. The batter was crispy on the outside but soggy once opened and the "mushy peas" were just ordinary peas partially mashed with a fork. My wife and friends wife had the Mushroom Risotto which was EXCELLENT, full of flavour and well presented. My friend had the Burger which he said was good, tasty and certainly BIG but again the chips were a letdown.

Great pub, very welcoming and good choice of real ales Had lunch that was definitely a cut above usual pub grub. Good variety and also good size portions, all served quickly. Although a struggle also managed a sweet, excellent sticky toffee pudding. Definitely would recommend a visit.

Absolutely fantastic evening! The quality of food is unequivocal. I used to live near this pub & was blown away about how much it’s changed! Still a beautiful lovely Devon pub definitely worth visiting but the food was something else!! I cannot recommend it highly enough

Once again, Michelle, Johnny, Vinnie and the team catered for a large party for my birthday comprising 17 adults and 4 children. All the meals came out together, piping hot and absolutely delicious. Special measures were put in place with no fuss for those that are Gluten Free and everyone had a blast. Cosy, warm, great atmosphere - recommend the Sunday afternoon 3pm 'Meat Draw' for some classic local comedy Thanks to all the staff, looking forward to coming back at Christmas

We came here with two friends for lunch after a long walk around Culmstock Beacon. The food was excellent, particularly the pasta dishes (the chef is Italian, we we were told), but the usual fish & chips and burger were also really good. Happily, this is not just a restaurant which happens to serve beer, but a real pub with a very warm welcome and a good range of beers and ciders. It was obviously very popular with local people meeting up for a drink and a chat.

Lovely pub, let down by some of its staff who are lazy and just stand around chatting to their mates. They could all do with some lessons on how to pull a pints of bitter!!

We have been several times food & service always excellent. Friendly, welcoming staff. Never have we or friends we have taken have ever been disappointed.

Lovely setting, especially as the road past was closed making it quieter! Always a popular spot as it’s by the river which you wish you could see more of but can certainly hear and visit across the road. Food was very good quality but portions have become small, both the main dish and chips. Unusual for a pub meal but if you don’t have a big appetite you will be fine as the quality os certainly there, but we did leave not feeling full sadly.

Beautifully situated near the river culm, we could walk along the river in an hour but after a great meal best to drive. Great welcome, friendly service. Menu can change as food cooked fresh on the day, great Italian menu. We returned the following week for a superb Sunday lunch. Plenty of outside seating too and dog friendly.

Pleasant village pub with a play are that has a carved dragon which I sadly forgot to photograph. Pleasant staff The sign in the car park about CCTV and cars being clamped was a bit off putting but more common place these days I suppose

I fancy myself as a bit of a cook with a couple of Italian signature dishes. I have to say the tagliatelle with beef ragu was sublime. My wife’s burger was the best I have seen as my fishing buddy & I make our way round Somerset & Devon on fishing trips. To top it all the landlord is a fisherman & there is a decent mixed river adjacent!

Lovely friendly staff and locals. Good beer at fair price for these days. Sat up by the river bank. Will go back to try food.

Went with the family for a farewell meal. Service was excellent. I loved the quantock pale ale. The sea bass was delicious, and all meals were well presented. Mild disappointment with the lack of desert options, but the ice creams went down well, and the baked Alaska style pavlova was reported as excellent

For a busy country pub in a beautiful location, we were expecting so much more. Our food was extremely bland and too greasy. We had the fish and chips and also a burger and none of it was very nice. Lots of unusual seasoning and just not very tasty. Really disappointing.

Great night out, food was amazing. Made a non menu dish for my wife, good to see a pub thinking outside the box. Staff were great to have a laugh with.

Probably the worst pub we have ever been to. The blonde bar lady was very rude, only focussing on the people she clearly knew at the bar and ignoring everyone else, despite it not being busy. When she finally did decide to come over, she spoke to us with awful attitude and walked away before we could even order. The place looked dirty, no evidence that cleaning has ever occurred there. Would avoid like the plague.

The chips are top quality. Good selection of beers/ales/ciders. Staff very welcoming and friendly. Lovely location alongside a river which you can splash around in. Nice outdoor kids play park.

I proceeded to explain that we were taking our dog for a quick walk (and toilet) then coming in for a drink. They then aggressively told me to park on the road, even though we were willing to spend money in their establishment. At the same time, 3 other cars were doing the same thing but bully manager/owner/someone with too much time on their hands decided to pick on the car with two younger women. Congratulations on making my wife cry. I hope you heal from whoever hurt you and bullied you in your past as inflicting it on other people isn't the answer. I have a number to a very good therapist if you decide to get the help you need.

An amazing little pub with accommodation and it is pet friendly. Really nice hosts. Situated in a small village the inn encompasses all you would expect from an old fashion England rural accommodation. Cozy rooms, clean throughout and a very nice outdoor green area, perfect for having a morning coffee in nature. Would definitely come again.

Best pub in the village. Good location for the Culm Valley trail. But please don't use the car park if you're not going to use the pub.

Great Inn, very helpful staff. The rooms are big and very clean. Nice bathrooms and towels provided. We happened to go on the pub quiz night and so joined in, locals were super friendly. Would definitely recommend if you're looking to stay in this area.

Lovely pub but please keep locals /regulars from dominating the door and bar areas . This is very intimidating, we visited on a Sunday and have found this to be the case most times . Bieng stared at as we arrive and enter the pub and as we leave is unnecessary and is intimidating. Such a shame .

Great pub with great food! In the middle of nowhere in Culmstock. Piano in the bar so the staff allows you to play. I had fish and chips perfect texture. Crispy batter and soft white fish

Fantastic meal and service. Absolutely spot on. Mussels cooked to perfection. The venison loin for the main was perfect We debated on having a dessert and we did. Again, it was superb. Great value. Cannot recommend The Culm Valley Inn highly enough. Please try it.

Another visit to the pub. Greeted well by the landlady and selected our meals off the board. Once again good choice of starters and mains. 14 of us had lunch at the Culm Valley Inn on the 23rd March. We could not fault it. Perfect hospitality, even for the dogs with water and treats provided. The food was excellent, service quick and efficient, as for cleanliness and ambiance could not...

Only stopped for a drink but will definitely be back . Beautiful views outside .
