Another bar recommended that we visit here as the beers were very good, sadly that wasn't the case! there was only one decent ale and that wasn't really very good. Lovely warm welcome though, and the food looked good, but we didn't stay to eat.

Since this venue changed hands (ignore all of the negative 2018 reviews) it has become an excellent community style pub. The food is great and good value, good choice of drinks available including a lot of tequilas (which Ian the landlord is happy to advise you about) and the whole place is very friendly. Staff are lovely too and always welcoming and it's good that hand sanitiser is available on every table. Would recommend the New Clarence to anyone, in fact we have a meeting there every month. 👍

We booked a table for two for the football for last Saturday night. We walked in and were told the football would be on upstairs. We were told we could go up and the room upstairs was really well set up with the tables and screen. Unfortunately due to internet issues the app to order drinks wasn’t working but the two ladies behind the bar were fantastic all night, they were rushed off their feet up and downstairs making sure everyone was getting their drinks. We even stayed after the football and had a few more drinks before closing time. Would highly recommend this place.

Jamie (& Jess) from the Whalebone have taken over the pub, so it goes without saying that the range & quality of the beers are of the same high standard. Numerous, ever changing real ales as well as craft beers, lagers & ciders available at reasonable prices. A fantastic PUB GRUB menu is now served every day. With plenty of vegetarian options. We tried the Slow Cooked Steak & Ale Pie, beware, it is huge! (it is a proper one, served in a dish with wonderfully tasty beef & full pastry sides) The Beer Battered Fish & Chips was great quality served with crispy batter. It is well placed for the lunch & pre-theatre crowd. GIVE IT A TRY

The New Clarence has opened again and we are so pleased. It is the ideal place to go before and after the theatre. We were greeted by the young bar man who was so welcoming, attentive courteous and attentive. He often went out of his way to bring our drinks to our table. Although the price of my 16oz steak I found exspensive at £17 and accompanying portions small, it was cooked correctly to my taste of medium to well. I am one of eight friends who met up here for a meal prior to a visit to the theatre. The place was very full but we had reserved a table and were eventually served with our pre-ordered meals. Four of us had ordered fish and chips, I was rather unimpressed at the sight of it, hard frozen chips and mushy peas in a solid, cold, dark green lump but the fish looked fresh enough. I ate it apart from the peas but I hadn't been seated in the theatre long before I got an extremely unpleasant stomach ache, I confided this to a friend, who also said she felt unwell. The other two friends who had the same meal were ill later in the evening. The one of us who had gluten free fish and chips was not affected. I am quite angry, this was a meeting of friends from across the country, getting together at some expense, to have a night at the theatre. We met up at this pub so it was nothing to do with any earlier meals but, as the illness was not bad enough to require medical attention, we must just accept what happened but will certainly never eat here again.

I'm just back from a few days in 'ull and stayed in the hotel right next to this place. I actually went in on the first night of opening since it was taken over as I fancied a quick pint and it was literally spitting distance from my hotel room. I was made to feel so welcome by Colin & Sarah and it was refreshing to meet publicans that know how to run a pub as it should be. The place is spotless and has all the qualities that a good pub should have, Inviting, cosy, friendly decent beer and hosts that actually care and show a genuine interest in their customers. These qualities can't be faked, especially to someone like myself who has spent much time in the local. I always think that the yardstick for any pub is the standards of the toilets and theirs are spotless. My time in 'ull was made all the better for meeting these two and spending some time here and I will certainly be back to see them both sometime in the future when they will also be serving food and if it's anything like the rest of the place then it will be excellent.

Food was fine to begin with, chicken baguette was a bit dry but salad and chips all fine. As a table we then made the mistake of asking for vinegar. When it was delivered, the lid was being secured by a grungy looking piece of sellotape and the top cracked but we continued to pour on you our food. It took about 30 seconds for one of our party to notice 'floaters' in the vinegar bottle... these later turned out to be around 30-40 dead critters and bugs which by now were all over our food. On complaining we were simply offered a free drink. The customer service was awful, very rude and slow considering we were the only customers in there. I would not recommend and I certainly will not be returning.

Should of know by how dirty the bar / restaurant area is that the kitchen would the same if not worse!!! Despite the food poisoning the food was awful, the 'home made chips' must of been made in a cement mixer and left for a few days! Did not finish our meals and just as well! Despite living in Hull all my life, I'd never visited the New Clarence before. One cold and windy Friday lunchtime, a group of colleagues and myself headed over to the pub to see what type of food they served.Upon the arriving, we were greeted by a friendly barmaid who took our order, a little slowly considering we were on the clock with only 60 minutes to spare. The menu is extensive, featuring typical pub grub with gourmet burgers thrown in for good measure. Naturally, I had to try one of the place's signature patties - the Mexican burger being my meal of choice. We took a booth in the back of the pub but had to leave our jackets on throughout the course of the meal - it was absolutely freezing, with the open plan nature of the building not helping matters. After about 40 minutes, our burgers arrived. They were gargantuan. The Mexican burger was packed to the brim with jalapenos, sour cream, gherkins and salsa, topped with homemade onion ring and sandwiched with a delicious brioche bun.The pattie itself was divine, if a little overcooked for my liking. It was beautifully seasoned and perfectly thick. The chunky chips that accompanied the dish were sublime - possibly some of the best I've ever tasted. The coleslaw on the other hand was a little bland and unusually, added nothing to the plate whatsoever. However, the homemade 'Yorkshire' ketchup was a delight with a really decent punch.Prices are very reasonable, with my massive burger and chips costing less than £7.Overall, the New Clarence is a gem in the heart of Hull that I never knew existed. I'll definitely be back, just pop the heating on next time!

Title slightly misleading as food is excellent just not gastro pub style although it is presented very well. Party of three, waitress described the fish as a whale. Pure white haddock with perfectly cooked batter. Better than a lot of fish shops. A slab of meat pie only let down by boring and fairly tasteless carrots and peas. Home made chicken tikka , pure quality. We had reserved a booth and it was just the right p,ace. The staff were warm and friendly. First time for a long time but will be back soon. Offers on the flyers where confusing, stated an offer, only then to be told it was not on tonight even though it was advertised. Was this because it was theatre night and they then could cash it in. We ordered a burger and chicken burger. The beef was over cooked and the bread wasn't even warmed up. The younger of the two barmen was lovely and had lots of friendly personality, however the older male could do with more people skills!! Nice pub, but won't be going back soon, wish I had gone to 3 john Scotts like we was going to....

Been here on many occasions. Staff are present, friendly and welcoming. Food is excellent. If going at busy time book a table and re-book food.

Went here for lunch on a Sunday whilst out shopping.Didn't want a full roast lunch so went for the ranch burger. It looked great when it arrived but sadly it was a big let down. The burger had been reheated, probably cooked the day before as it was so dry, pity really as it was of a decent quality just hadn't been handled correctly. The bread bun again was so dry it just disintegrated & the chicken was covered in black bits.Beer was good tho as was the service & my wife enjoyed her meal so I have given a 3 but my meal was a 2 star at best.

We pre ordered our food before arrival and it was brought to our table less then 10 minutes after our arrival. The food was lovely and hot and tasted great. The staff were great and Ian stayed with me outside the pub after he had locked up to wait until my boyfriend came and picked me up. That's great service.

We booked a Pre-Theatre meal at The New Clarence for 10 people. When we arrived our table was ready and we received a great service from start to finish. All of our meals came out together, were hot and the food was absolutely gorgeous and the pub has a great atmosphere.

The New Clarence was highly recommended to me by a work colleague and everything she had told me was right. Gorgeous food, great atmosphere and good value for money. We booked our table and the menu was emailed to me in advance. We were asked if we could send our choices back before 3pm the next day because it would be busy. What a good idea! Once we'd arrived and ordered our drinks we were shown to our table and our meals arrived after about 15 mins. The food was delicious and we would most definitely return in the future.

I absolutely love this place the staff are so friendly and helpful. There is a good variety of food available on the menu and the meals are of a good size portion with the 'lighter bites' for those who don't want such a big meal. I have tried a variety of the meals available and every single one has been amazing. I would recommend everyone to visit!

We planned to eat at the theatre but hadn't realised they only served snacks now. After asking for directions the bar lady recommended the Clarence. It was extremely busy upon arrival so I would recommend booking but the friendly barman said we could eat at the bar if we were happy to and reassured us he would try to get our food out within half an hour (there was only 45 minutes until the show.) We actually only waited around 10 minutes and the food was delicious. The waiters/bar staff asked how we were getting on and they were very friendly. We would definitely eat here again but book in advance next time now we know that it is there.

Popped into the New Clarence on Monday but it was opening night at the theatre and was full, any remaining tables were reserved. I had better luck on a Friday at about 5:30pm. Pretty good menu albeit a little prices for what I've seen of Hull pubs. Opted for a baked potato loaded with Chilli con carne, bacon and cheese. Prompt service as it was quite empty. Good portion served with fresh salad and coleslaw. Only draw back is there's a minimum of £10 for card payment.

It was my first time there, so only ordered a soft drink. The pub was quite busy and there was limited staff. If I go again it will be much earlier.

A very busy Wetherspoons. Service is great especially when using the app to order. Food is usual offer and a great range of beers. Close to Connexin Live. Great value food and drink.

Best great value quality food and service in hull. Your grub will not be brought to your table faster than anywhere in the world and always boiling hot ,no lukewarm grub here on skillets

The staff member called Courtney is a very rude individual. She was arrogant and very very insulting. I won't be coming back here.
