Consistently the best carvery I've eaten which is why I keep on returning with friends and family. Freshly cooked, hot and tasty. Although it is very busy on Sunday, the staff are always polite, friendly and efficient. Movenpick Ice-Cream is a real favourite (not easily found in the UK, so even more extra special).

I love coming here for a descent carvery roast. It is not part of a chain and is quite homely. The decor is not the most up-to-date but it is a good honest down-to-earth pub, usually busy and always with a friendly atmosphere. The roasts are consistently good and the portions are large. It serves the nearest thing to a home-cooked roast that I have come across. Good value for money.

First time at the Nelson Arms, had a tasty, hot & plentiful Roast. Our experience was spoiled by a loud table of 7 with constant bad language, not what you want in a Family oriented environment. Felt staff should have spoken to this table. Will visit again, hopefully this was a one off.

Have stopped at the Nelson’s arms before and this is a go to stop for when you are craving a roast after being abroad! Friendly staff behind the bar and carvery counter. The food itself is good, have only ever had the carvery but you get a generous portion of meat and roast potatoes. Good selection of veg too. Not a fancy dining place but a nice pub with home cooked roast. Can recommend

Awful. Just awful. 60 minute wait, food was awful and hair in my gravy. When confronted by the manager she was rude, and swore at me, an other paying customer sat on another table was also complaining about how awful the service was from the manager. My glass had a lipstick stain on from where it hadn’t been cleaned properly. Will never return and will make sure the bad word will get around. I am disgusted about how awful this place was with a terrible “manager”.

Booked for 4 adults. Had to wait for ta wait for table and would not give drinks until you sat at table! The queue for food was never ending as it was a free for all, absolute disgrace. Finally at counter only allowed 2 from 4 meats. Once I chose I was not offered stuffing or crackling. Plates were small for over £15 a head!!!! All the condiments were empty and they did not fill up. All in all it felt like being at the cattle market and they are just interested in the money ringing in the till. Needs a complete revamp.

A few Sunday's a go we had a booking else where and they cancelled last minute, with a few hours to spare I called the Nelson pub and they were busy and they did all they could do fit us in, and they did. I was with my husband and toddler, the Car-very was good value, very tasty and the staff dished up the portions and they were very generous with it. The pork tasted perfect and the beef was very tender, and vegetables were very fresh, finally my Yorkshire pudding went down a treat. We aren't local but pass this pub every so often on a journey we make so we will be returning. A definite worthwhile visit.

Before lockdown we would get a Sunday lunch as a take away as I work it was always nice and we enjoyed it, we decided to get one today and it was the worst Sunday lunch I have eaten, to be fair the beef was nice but the rest of it was awful, the roast potatoes were completely black and inedible, the Yorkshire puddings were chewy, the gravy was so strong it just overpowered the meal carrots like bullets, if this is what they are now dishing up we will definitely not go back.

We werent extremely hungry so the friend mentioned above had breaded mushrooms and homemade chips and myself and another friend shared plaice with chips, peas and salad. It was delicious! Popped in on the way home from a day out yesterday, the first time we have been in a few years and was sad to see how dated it is looking. Staff were nice and friendly, we arrived a little before food started but were told we could take our drinks to the dining room. We chose table 10 first, but the seat covers on the chairs were so dirty we moved to another table. The room was full of flies which kept landing on us. At one point I had two on my face and another on my hand. It is hot at the moment, but we eat out regularly and have not had this problem elsewhere. The starter came quickly, which was a sharing platter for two, but no plates came with it and we had to ask the waitress for some, which she seemed surprised at. She was very nice, but perhaps new? The flies were landing on the platter as we were eating and we had to keep fanning over it. The platter was 6 breaded mushrooms, 2 goujons and 4 prawns, garlic bread, salad and dips. The bread was lovely, the salad was okay and the rest was nicely cooked. A young man came to clear our plates and his customer service was excellent, very friendly, he seemed interested in whether we enjoyed the food and asked if we would like him to get us more drinks, without us asking. The mains arrived quite quickly. We both had Hawaiian burgers and chips. The chips were awful, soggy and undercooked. I am a little fussy over chips, but my husband will eat them any way they come, but he could not eat his either. The burger was tasteless and we had a bit of dried lettuce and raw onion with it. Nobody came to check on us despite there being only 3 tables in use at that time and when the waitress came to take our plates away she did not ask if there was a problem, despite only the burgers being eaten. I told her the chips were soggy and not cooked and she seemed a bit flustered. She asked if she should take them away and tell the chef and we said yes. We were expecting someone to come and speak to us after, but nobody did. We went to pay and the waiter who had served us earlier took our money but did not ask how the meal was and charged us the full amount, so £32 for a starter for two and a burger each! Really disappointed and a shame as it used to be great food there

I cannot stand the traditional sunday roast, I find it bland, bulky and the most basic of culinary flare (that should upset some) So with horror my wife stated she wanted a sunday roast at The Nelson Arms, a place her sister swears by. OK, so car loaded, and its quite a drive to Churchill from the Bath side of Bristol. Eventualy we get there, its popular, so no easy parking, I do find a spot, opposite another pub up a hill. We enter its busy, busy with a capital B. Luckily our reserved table is ready, but its a tight seating arrangement for the 6 of us. 5 of our cohort order roasts, i survey the menu and tho there is a multitude of flavours and styles, nothing grabs my fancy, but I go for a hot bagette. Off they go to collect their roasts, and I await my order. Back they come with their roasts, all looking smug. I await my baguette. They consumme their roasts (mucky food at the best of times) Im pretty fed up now awaiting my baguette, which Im convinced will fall far short of my expectations (why, have you ever ordered a house special burger in a pub with an eatery menu, £12 plus, they make it sound great, but it never lives upto expectation) My baguette arrives, hmmm ok it looks better than expected, chomp and its blinking lovely!!!!!

We came across this place on the off chance en route back to Bristol from Devon and thank god we did. What a great family run pub this is. As we walked in mid sunday afternoon it was naturally very busy. We were greeted by a very friendly and smiley lady who informed us that as we hadn't booked, we would have around a 20 minute wait which in my opinion is nothing. After about quarter of an hour we were seated at the back in a lovely conservatory area. Quaintly decorated and quiet, we were more than pleased with this. The carvery isn't self serve however this was not as issue. The meat choices were Lamb (Yes!!!), beef, pork and turkey. As me and my mum had two different meats each we were able to taste them all. They were simply stunning. The veg choice was peas, carrots, cabbage and swede along with roast potatoes, stuffing and home made yorkies. There was no limit to what you could ask for and it was all piping hot and perfectly cooked. Must note the roast potatoes were like your mums (gorgeous) and the gravy was great too. A bargain at £10.99 on sundays and £6.99 weekdays too. I will definitely be returning as soon as I can as this was by far the best carvery I've had. Forget toby and winterstream there's a lot to be said about family run pub. Teo VERY happy customers, thank you!

Visited with a friend, and had intended to eat elsewhere but ended up here. We walked in and ordered drinks, reasonable prices for a pint, but a single archers and lemonade expensive at £4.50. The barman was incredibly friendly and confirmed we could sit anywhere without a reserved sign (as we spotted a table with one when we arrived). We walked into the main restaurant area by the dessert fridge and passed a large 12 seater table which was reserved. We chose a table in the conservatory area, but decided it was a bit chilly and the tables only had hard wooden chairs so moved back to the main restaurant area where the chairs were padded and it was warmer, and sat down. The menu is a laminated piece of A3, folded in half. Our menu was slightly grubby, but we weren't too bothered. We chose our meals and went up to order (2x starters, a carvery, and a curry). The food:Our starters arrived slightly overcooked - the chicken goujons were ok, but crunchy, the mozarella sticks were harder than the goujons! The waitress was hovering, and cleared our plates as soon as the cutlery hit them. For our mains, once the curry arrived my friend collected the carvery. In the time that the curry was put down on the table, before my friend returned with her carvery, the waitress walked past four times. It seemed she was not busy and was looking for something to do, very attentive, but slightly off putting. The carvery was ok,very good portions, chose two different meats and had two slices of each. Unlike a standard carvery, where the meat is served and you are passed the plate to choose the remainder of your meal, the canteen reference from an earlier review made sense. You are asked what you would like and the staff serve it all up for you. The taste was good, the lamb was delicious, but there was something hard and solid in the cabbage, possibly plastic. We didnt investigate further just popped it to the side. My curry (rogan josh) was a bit salty, the chicken was very tender and well cooked, and the rice was lovely. The accompanying naan bread was cold, as if from the fridge, but I warmed it by putting the curry bowl on top of it! The waitress was hovering again, as well as seeing to three other small tables (two couples, and a single gentleman), she walked through the room an additional 12 times while we were eating (we had made an earlier joke to each other about counting and were shocked when we did!). We definitely felt watched!Dessert was also a bit of a game of two halves. First thing to mention is there is a choice of (squirty) cream, custard or ice cream with desserts. For icecream you are charged an additional 60p. The white chocolate rocky road was absolutely delicious. Light and airy, with a good ratio of mini marshmallows, raisins and malt balls included, all on top of a biscuit base. The angel sprinkles cake was... ok. There were a few slices already missing where it was on display in the dessert fridge, and the side where the cake had been cut was dry on one side from exposure to the air. Again, brilliant portion sizes. The restaurant:As mentioned already, the A3 laminated folded menu was a bit grubby. The decor is reasonable, some very tasteful pieces but a bit mismatched around the room. The chairs had a multitude of stains/marks on and look like they could do with a good upholstery clean. The tables are decorated with plastic pots of flowers, quite tasteful/realistic but absolute dust magnets. They were dusty! The tablecloth was a little sticky, we assumed at first due to the style of tablecloth (wipe clean but padded), however we later witnessed the hovering waitress using a cloth which sat in a bowl of progressively dirty water which sat on a table next to the dessert fridge (and next to the door to the gents toilet) to wipe down the tables when she cleared and relaid them. We realised at one point that the place mat on our table next to my friend had salt on it, and neither of us used salt during our entire meal. Upon ordering dessert we also got a second drink.. my pint glass was 'dishwasher dirty' - I have this at home and am used to seeing it, stained marks that do not come off without a proper scrub.By this point we had gone slightly insane from the same four or five country music tracks which were playing on a loop and were just laughing at the entire experience. It is certainly not one we would forget..however at over £60 for 3 courses and two drinks for two people it was definitely a case of quantity, not quality. With a good clean, a larger selection of music (I am a country fan, but a wider range of tracks is needed!) and some better hygiene standards (the bowl of dirty water that the cloth was kept in throughout the entire time we were in the pub could have been returned to the kitchen to be rinsed/changed... the spray bottle we assume of anti bacterial spray next to it could have been used..) this place would be worth a return visit as the portion sizes ARE good, and other than the hard thing in the carvery, the carvery was nice, the other menu items aren't so good. It seems to be popular with locals, a couple of the tables were definitely regulars. Oh also, the reserved large table of 12 people never materialised, we were unsure whether it was reserved for staff for after closing (as another reserved table in a different part of the pub had been used by the owner while we were eating).

Not so long ago, practically every pub was offering carvery meals but now the Nelson Arms out at Churchill, is one of the few left!We called in there for lunch a few days ago and had a good meal; the beef was slightly overcooked but still tasty and the vegetables were very good (lovely creamed swede), apart from the peas - not fresh or frozen, could they have been tinned? My friend said the turkey was moist and delicious. For pudding we went for the spotted dick and custard, brought to us steaming hot from the kitchen and it was very good with lots of flavour. The staff were friendly and service was good, but the decor of the pub is looking a bit tired and could do with a refurbishment. There isn't miuch room between tables and it is difficult to get the chairs out from under the tables! There are only 2 real ales on offer, Butcombe and Doom Bar and the spirits seem to be the usual ones. But having said that, you get a good lunch with generous portions and its well worth a visit.

My wife and I had some visitors down from "up North" so we wanted to show them around, Street, Shepton Mallet, Cheddar etc, and on our way back we stopped at the Nelson Arms in Churchill. We decided to opt for a light lunch as we were eating out in the evening, so we ordered baguettes, not a good choice if you are eating a large meal later, they were Huge. There was plenty of the filler of your choice, and in fact you couldn't pick it up in one go and we all had to cut them in half, one of us even cut the halves into quarter again.Well worth a stop, not just for the baguettes as the carvery looked scrumptious also.

Went with friends who regularly enjoy the carvery there. The whole place was packed with regimented tables to cater for the hoards that apparently flock in. The carvery servery area was somewhat restricted for the chef, but the food was plentiful and tasty - my friend had seven roast potatoes! The Butcombe beer was well kept. However, I thought the place could do with a bit of a makeover and the actual bar itself needed sanding down and revarnishing. So, mixed impressions - the chef was jolly and welcoming, the carvery was good and plentiful, the Butcombe was spot on but not keen on the canteen feel! And a makeover wouldn't go amiss. However, my friend informed me that at times the place is so popular in the summer weekends that people have been not known to be queuing outside to get in!

Carvery very much the focus of this place even doing a takeaway! Every table set for food and smell of cabbage pervasive. Only 2 beers Doom Bar and Butcombe. Barmaid was delightful though, beer was well kept and hot baguettes were delicious with superb chips. The dessert fridge looked to die for.

We ate here while staying at a local B & B and came back twice. The carvery was really good, the meat tender and lovely roast potatoes. It was very good value for money. The staff were friendly and welcoming.

The food itself was good with lots of it, however, the way it was plated up leaves a lot to be desired. The meat was carved beautifully, but the vegetables were almost thrown on the plate. The roast potatoes were speared with a carving fork and mostly broken before being virtually thrown on the plate. The food tasted a lot better than it looked. The drinks were expensive. Half a lager and a small coke was £3.65. Our overall experience was not good and we will not be returning.

The pub is situated half way between Bristol Airport and Cheddar Gorge. The carvery is serviced whole day (£6.99 per adult and £3.99 per child). Choose from beef, pork or turkey, add wedges, veges, gravy or stuffing. Food is tasty and service is very good. Highly recommend this tavern for all who travel around. They serve nice cakes as well.

Ate here as we were recommended it for the carvery and don't get me wrong the carvery was very nice and good for the money however we also ordered the "home made burger" which needs to be changed to home cooked as its definitely not home made it was a mass produced cooked burger and fries were undercooked pale hard potatoes but hey ho it's a good place for carvery

Whilst this pub/restaurant is a carvery there are plenty of other dishes to choose from. The food is excellent and the pub was very busy when we visited on a Saturday afternoon/evening. All four of us only had excellent things to say about this place as we left.

This village innlooks a little tired from the exterior but inside it is warm and welcoming with tables throughout as the focus here is on a traditional family dining experience. The carvery menu is back up by an extensive choice of other dishes. We had a choice of four meats and five vegetables with the usual accompaniments. The food was well cooked and portions to suit all preferences. Top marks for the offer of gluten-free gravy. Tradional puddings and sweets.

We visited at the end of September, the food was pleasant enough although service slow. Decided to visit again a week later and waited 50 minutes for a 3 ingredient side salad and a simple pasta dish. Both occasions resulted in receipt of £100 fines for parking on the premises yet at no time did staff or signage alert us to the need to register our vehicle. This is so careless on the staff's behalf, and has resulted in locals deciding not to use the venue - nobody would willingly add £100 to their light-lunch bill nor go through the hassle of appealing fines simply because staff can't be bothered to advise visitors. Alas, I have 2 fines (£200) on appeal and I am presently awaiting the outcome. No plans to visit again - why would I?

Sunny day so we took advantage and sat outside and ordered drinks to the app at 2.50pm. Pint and vodka & orange. At 3.10 I went inside to see how long they would be drinks a rude tall woman with dark hair shouted at me ‘our screen is saying 25 mins can u see we busy’ no sorry just rude! So we decided to go and get served at the bar as there was no wait. We actually drank these then at 3.35 went to see where our drinks where that I ordered at 2.50! We eventually got them at 3.45. Then we ordered food which came within 15 mins. 👌Chicken bites were lovely! Garlic bread had no taste of garlic and the cheese chips lol see photo - what cheese. The female staff behind the bar need to learn how to use manners and SMILE. What a mirsable bunch. At least the male staff were friendly and welcoming. Won’t be going to this place again.

The dining staff completely ignored my presence, so much so that I had to get up and ask at the bar for the pudding to be served. Their either need to train their staff to look the part and act the part or give up. Breakfast the following morning was similar, I had three staff not 4 feet from my table discussing their shift patterns at the top of their voices. I should have got up and asked them politely to move their discussions away from the paying guests but I did not.

They do not serve food. Apparantly they have not served food for 5 years. Think the website needs updating
