We stayed for 2 nights over the August bank holiday weekend and were really impressed. The room is clean, spacious and 'functional'. The breakfast was great and our hosts Roger and Hilary were warm and attentive, but not overbearing or intrusive. A nice place to stay as a weekend get away if you don't want to spend a fortune and enjoy some of the beautiful places nearby... as there's plenty!

This is another very worthy review for The Nelson. Despite the change of use during 2015 The Nelson doesn't disappoint as a B & B. Everything from the moment of arrival is just excellent. The hosts, Hilary and Roger clearly continue to take great pride in the hospitality they offer visitors and yet again we have been absolutely delighted with our stay ... this time over the Christmas period. The Nelson offers great value, great service and a wonderfully friendly atmosphere. Situated in the village of Holton it affords a good location for those who wish to explore the surrounding area. For us it provides a "home from home" atmosphere when we visit relatives in the area. Well done to the hosts..... see you in 2016!!

The room and place was lovely for the price, we were very pleasantly surprised. However, there were no laundry facilities or fridge that we could use so we couldn't store food... We didn't ask though so not necessarily the fault of the owners, they had recently closed the pub section and just become a B&B so no doubt there was a period of adjustment and if we had caught them to ask maybe they would have worked it out. But there was no mini fridge in the room and minimal cutlery (i.e. just a teaspoon for the free tea and coffee). The owners were friendly, gracious and helpful and the rooms were lovely - just an idea to add some amenities such as maybe clearly defined access to a shared kitchen/fridge. We loved it here, thank you!!

The hosts, Hilary and Roger, go out of their way to make guests welcome and provide quality accomodation along with an excellent breakfast at very reasonable rates. Stayed here for one night - £80 b & b - lovely room with everything you could wish for - only slight draw back was the lack of shower power! Breakfast was good. Its is such a shame that the local community no longer have a pub they can walk too - for a small village it is a necessity.

Have visited twice recently the first time the pub was closed but to-day there was a notice suggesting it was no longer open as a public house just a B & B. Real shame as I wanted to try it and their ales as part of the 'Woodfordes brewery ale trail'. Oh well another pub 'bites the dust'

My wife and I ate at the Nelson this evening. Nice clean pub and restaurant, looks recently redecorated. Quite quiet as you might expect mid-week away from the busy coastal towns but the food was very tasty indeed. I had the Duck and my wife the Pan Fried Chicken and we both commented on the good flavours. Second course was equally as good. Good service and reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend.

My husband and I have eaten here several times. The food here is excellent, we always forgot to have a starter and main or a main and dessert as all three are just a little to filling. The only critisum I have about the menu is it doesn't change that often.I know the restaurant is trying to be modern but I do miss seeing a nice crisp table cloth and linen napkins in the evening, I do think this is a must. The other thing I feel the place lacks is atmosphere, the bar area is very friendly but the restaurant is a bit cold.Having said all this I will visit again and again.

It is always nice to have a choice of vegetarian meals. Our latest meal at The Lord Nelson provided a choice of two vegetarian main meals. I opted for the roast vegetable timbale and was most impressed. Beautifully presented and tasted excellent. My husband chose the special which was chicken. He said it was a superior piece of meat, the vegetables were cooked to perfection in all a thoroughly enjoyable meal. Spoiled for choice in the pudding department I plumped fro the English cheeses and biscuits whilst my husband went for the brownie and ice cream. Service unobtrusive and efficient.Overall an excellent meal.

A fantastic weekend spent here. My family and I stayed here and were amazed by the service. The rooms were immaculate and everything was beautifully clean. The bathrooms were brilliant. Breakfast was delicious although slightly different to that of the standard full English. A fantastic array of food was provided for breakfast which accommodated everyone's tastes. The landlady was fantastic and even accommodated for my mothers gluten intolerance by purchasing gluten free bread for toast at breakfast. We returned to the pub for a private party of which was fantastic. The chef is incredible and provided an outstanding buffet. Dessert was phenomenal, and the meal was an overall phenomenon. The following morning my family who lived down the road joined us for breakfast at the B&B. The landlady was fine with them joining us guests for breakfast and handled serving 14 of us excellently. We all had a superb breakfast together.

I used to drink at this pub years ago when visiting family and am amazed at the sympathetic refurbishment the current owners have made. The old features have been retained but with very stylish modern facilities. My husband and I stayed here for a weekend back in April and were thoroughly spoilt as we were the only guests! We also dined here on the Saturday night and the food was very good and catered for all diets (I'm a veggie and options were delicious). They have a good selection of beers and both the bar area and restaurant were busy. The room was all we needed and very luxurious, with the best bed we've ever slept in! We arrived in Holton at our rented accommodation on Friday evening and it was about 9pm so we thought we’d try the local pub (again). We’d had a long drive, unpacked and sorted ourselves out and walked to our “local” and could not believe that it was closed at just after 10pm. Are they running a pub? We’ve stayed in Holton before, tried to get to the pub, walked there at 6pm to find that it opens at 6.30! Very late for a pub opening. During our last stay, yet again, we tried again – after 6:30 pm and the door was locked – the outside lights were on though. This time we had to drive to another pub where we told them of our annoyance. The owner knew the pub and said “oh they only stay open if people are there - their days are numbered as they should stay open for the times they advertise”. This seems very sad for a pub in a village – especially when so many are closing. We would have thought that they would have wanted as much business as they could have obtained. There were four of us on Friday evening. We would have popped along for a few drinks which would have generated a good few bob. We were also going to use them for lunch or dinner on Saturday and again for lunch on Sunday but decided that, maybe, they might have been closed so didn’t want to chance it. They lost a lot of business/money - it must be very unsettling for the locals.…if they have any. Luckily if we have another trip to Holton, we have located a pub that opens – on time – and doesn’t close early.. Hence the reason for the low score is that we haven't been able to get there in the "opening" hours....although we gave a "5" for outside seating (obviously)

We spent the weekend at The Lord Nelson as my husband had a coastal photography course in nearby Southwold and Aldeburgh. The accommodation was gorgeous with William Morris wallpaper, a very comfortable bed and a spacious en-suite. We ate in Parkers Restaurant on both evenings and had really good food, well cooked and presented. Breakfast on both mornings was equally as good. Roger and Hilary really made us feel so welcome, and nothing was too much trouble. They also gave lots of pointers as to places to have coffee and eat in Southwold, as I was visiting the town whilst my husband did his photography. I would recomment both the restaurant for those in the local area and for those further afield the accomodation too as it is great.

So it's 6.00pmn on New Years Eve and our plans are in tatters.Adnams have closed the pub in Southwold that we were planning on eating our traditional Fish and Chip farewell to the old year in, nowhere in Walberswick seems to be serving food, the satnav is sending us in odd directions on our wandering route home and suddenly we pass this roadside pub.A U-turn takes us back past it, the barman is alone, but the situation is dire and we take a chance. We are so grateful we did. If you have ever imagined a modernised version of the traditional country pub, where the stuff that was bad has been improved, and the stuff that was good has been built on, then the Lord Nelson is it.The owners have spent money on it, they have employed an excellent chef, they build a great log fire - but what makes this different and so well worth visiting is that they know what makes a pub work.Where was the landlord all through the evening? Not lurking in a back room adding up his takings, not flapping around his competent staff (Seemingly mostly family) and getting in their way, but out in the bar welcoming locals and strays like us equally.Everyone talks to everyone else, nobody is excluded, the atmosphere is as warm and welcoming as the log fire. The food - a set menu on this particular evening - was stunningly good. A short menu, perfectly balanced, well prepared, beautifully presented. Not cheap by 'pub' standards, but better than many full-blown restaurants we have been in that charge much more.Dog friendly too. A pub that keeps a stock of dog biscuits for its canine customers. We'll be going back. We hope to see many of you there, this is an enterprise that deserves to succeed.(No fish and chips though on New Years Eve. But the monkfish was delicious.

Having grown up in the area I can't fault the upgrade of decor or choice of beers on tap. Aside from that it was over priced for the service, menu or standard of food.A few tips if you decide to visit:If you expect butter with your bread or any of balsamic and olive oil dip - ask for it or it will be served dryIf you are following a raw food diet, you'll love this place. Vegetables and handcut chips are definitely served on the rarer side.If you like your steak rare, ask for blue as medium and rare come served the same, although maybe skip the steak as it comes cooked in oil which should always be a no for a fatty steak. When it comes to sauce for the steak, don't confuse pepper with peppercorn...the pepper sauce was little more than an onion gravy...There is always a saving grace in a story and the dessert had to be that. Overall, though The Lord Nelson lacks lustre, has visions of grande and is ultimately a disappointment.

Have visited this pub to eat a couple of times. The reception is very warm - very nice staff so it's not surprising that there are plenty of seniors who enjoy the place. When the open fire is lit the ambiance is very cosy. The food we had was enjoyable and with hearty portions. If I had a quibble it is that with a couple of the dishes - the starters in particular - I would have been happier with a smaller portion with a bit more delicacy in the presentation. For example, the salmon and sour cream starter was only that: there was plenty of it and it was fresh, but it would have benefited imho from some toast or a more seasoned salad. This is intended to be helpful because there is a lot of local competion, and I would like to see the Nelson thrive as it has a very pleasant vibe.

We made a booking and the owner was extremely helpful which gave a favourable impression even before we dined. We decided to go for Roast Beef and a pudding. The beef was cooked just right - a genuine medium rare. The vegetables were nice and firm - a small amount but very nicely cooked and presented. Roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings cooked to perfection. A very good bottle of red wine. All of us enjoyed our choice of dessert and the coffee was a nice finish to a very good meal. The service was smooth and very attentive and the only thing that we felt would improve the experience would be, as a previous writer has commented, a little softening of the décor. When our meal was ready we moved into the main restaurant, which again is very clean and comfortable. The food was well presented and very tasty, couldn't fault it. Overall service was exceptional and both the owner and his wife checked that everything was OK and we were enjoying ourselves. Food was very nice, steaks perfectly cooked with good chunky chips, and for once very reasonably priced good sized sweets. Woodforde's Wherry beer went down very well. The place has been refurbished very nicely but currently lacks a little ambience probably due to the very recent reopening and the little touches like lamps, paintings still to be completed? I’ve been here for a few afternoon teas and lunches. The food is always lovely and cooked well, the themed afternoon teas are always really fun and a great treat for the local area. However the staff are not very attentive, they give you your food/drinks and leave you! It states unlimited drinks but they don’t ask if you need more, they don’t even check if your food is okay or if you need anything. At one point my friend said ‘excuse me’ and tried getting the attention of staff at the table next to us and the staff member just walked away, when we finally managed to ask for more tea they huffed like we were an inconvenience. There were also loads of hairs on our food, I think they were blowing around because they just kept appearing, maybe because they allow dogs. It’s a shame because I love the afternoon teas but it has put me off.
