We ordered takeaway through JustEat to celebrate Mothers' Day and they really blew us away. The stand-out dish was the lamb passanda; genuinely the best thing I've tasted in a long time, a deliciously balanced sauce. The lamb was a little tough, but that's because we had to wait a little while before collecting it - because they had it ready about 15 minutes earlier than we'd expected to pick it up. There was enough food for all of us, with leftovers, and very reasonably priced. The onion bhajis were a little tough as well, but again, we were late picking it up so that's not necessarily their fault. Prompt, well made, delicious food at a good price. We will definitely order from here again.

I ordered a delivery for 6:30 on this Friday night thinking it would be fresh and tasty, big mistake. Firstly I had to place the bag in the sink as it was swimming in grease, my finger nails are stained, my prawn puri was swimming in grease, the lamb buna was just mush, the mushroom rice had no mushrooms (maybe I got something else), my poppadoms were horrible snd so greasy, snd I didn’t get my sauces. I never treat myself and I’m so disappointed that I wasted what little money I have. After tasting a little of everything I t to brew if all away, So so disappointed.

Good service with new decor. Being honest we visited the Passage to India as we couldn’t get a table at our normal Indian restaurant. The passage to India is the new name and new management for what used to be The Nawab. They have done a great job of the new decor, very bright with new wallpapers, paint, carpets, the lot, keeping the old Indian theme. Looks a lot better then it was. The service was excellent with very attentive staff and the manager making the effort to check everything was ok. The food was also good, I had the chicken razela, my wife the chicken tikka biriyani, all tasted lovely. What I would say is the menu is standard, nothing jumps out at you as different or worth trying as a change. This is where our usual choice of Indian restaurant still remains number one for us. Would definitely recommend a visit if you haven’t been before

Very Goode evening had by all. Must go again on a Sunday or Monday and have their Banquet deal as it's currently only £11.95 each. Bargain as it's not the shrunk down size ones either!

Visited on a Saturday night at 8 pm, around 40% full, so services was excellent! Very attentive, pleased to see us back again etc, etc, even asking about the friends we came with previously! The drinks and poppadoms served straight away while we had a chance to talk about the new menu and get a good insight to the new dishes. Food came out quickly, and piping hot, and it was absolutely delicious. Too much to eat there and then, so a 'doggy bag' came back with our 'on the house drink' of Baileys on crushed ice, and a brandy for me.VERY scrummy! Shame they don't have more customers to sample their superb food at very reasonable prices. Highly recommended.PS.Upstairs has been redecorated, but the stairs on the way up is still in need of a bit of TLC! Don't be put off by this. Stairs is, of course no good if you are in a wheelchair.

Went here last night after hearing many positive reviews from my boyfriend and him telling me that we 'must go!'. We arrived at 6 for the restaurant to be empty, we were quickly seated and offered drinks and popadoms. We gave our order then took in the decor, looks very clean and tidy, I like the old style it has as it gives it some more authenticity. There was a incense candle burning too which was slightly overpowering at the start but smelled lovely. The music varied from traditional Indian (I love!) to Jessie J (hmm). Popadoms arrived - loads of them with chutney, mint sauce, side salad and a hot sauce. The side salad was plentiful and a nice touch to the average Popadoms and chutney. Drinks came quickly too. We were left to munch before the waiter took our main orders - boyfriend ordered korma & garlic naan and I the chicken tikka biriyani & cheese naan (we are quite basic with our Indian). Food came with the hot holding plate and they dished out food up at the side of the table which I loved. Food was delicious and you can tell that it is home cooked - and fairly cheap too! My biriyani was only £6 and naan was £2.50. The portions were massive and I couldn't finish all of mine. After our meals we were given a hot cloth for fingers - another nice touch. I like that we were not rushed, we were able to pace ourselves and enjoy the evening. Bill came to £30 for 4 drinks, popadoms, mains and sides which is fantastic. Would definitely recommend the Nawab!

Food has always been great and authentic and the staff happy to accommodate all diets. (You know, the fussy ones who don't eat meat, don't like it too spicy etc). Ask for the toasted poppodums if you're bored with the plain ones.We try and visit at least once a week otherwise withdrawal symptoms kick in.Never had a bad one, or average come to that.

The management had changed at the later part of 2014, but has since been taken back by the main family as the new ones couldn't keep up! They have made some changes to the decor, but it could do with finishing! Decor is only part of the story, but the lick of paint and the white table cloths makes it look so much brighter and welcoming. The doors to the toilet need to be painted but otherwise the decor is OK.There is a new printed menu - gone are the curled up old ones! The 'new management' has improved the range, and the taste of the food! There is a lovely range of starters that can also be ordered as main courses, but if you are not a big eater, then skip the starter for your poppadoms and chutneys as these are still reasonably priced, and a sufficient supply too.If you are on a budget, then check out the Persian curry (Pathia or the Dansak). Same quantity of chicken or meat as other dishes, but the price includes rice. Wines are basic but nicely chilled and the beer is either draft or bottled and all still at pub prices.Seating is either open for group parties, or sit in the screened areas for a little more privacy. Not as noisy as some places! Background music is very diverse, ranging from traditional indian to 'Frozen' depending on the party... LOL!Overall, a pleasant little place, good tasty food at reasonable prices, and if you're lucky, even a drink on the house with the bill!Highly recommended too by my family that comes down from Wales and the others from Malta who make this their first stop!

(The Cure)The small town of South Woodham Ferrers is 'blessed' with a wide variety of 'ethnic' restaurants. At the time of writing I'm aware of a Thai 'eat in', a Thai take-away, a Chinese 'eat in', at least three Chinese take-aways, a couple of kebab/grill take-aways, a chippy and at least three Indian restaurants. From memory The Nawab is now the longest established Indian restaurant in the town, having sat above the fish and chip shop for over twenty years to my recollection. Of course different management have come and gone over the years but, like Trigger's Broom, the intrinsic restaurant that is 'The Nawab' remains. That said, it must be at least ten years since I last tried The Nawab, but it was a Friday evening and a friend suggested that, as our wives were heading out for a girly night, why not go for a curry? I had asked the regulars in my local, and checked the gossip on the local social media page, and The Nawab was suggested. The entrance is less than enticing, a doorway in an alleyway, above the aforementioned Fish & Chip 'restaurant', opposite another Indian take-away, and just down from a Chinese take-away. Up the stairs and you're greeted by a few chairs for people waiting for Nawab take-aways and a bar. Beyond the bar the restaurant seats are set in small back to back booths, but without the booth divider, if you get my drift. We arrived reasonably early, on a Friday evening and were shown to our 'booth', we ordered drinks while we perused the menu, which is basic 'English' Indian fare, Dhansak, Korma, Madras, Vindaloo, Biryani. The usual suspects, nothing too ambitious. My friend ordered a Chicken Chat starter, while I ordered Tandoori Lamb Chops, they arrived promptly (the restaurant was still empty) accompanied by a generous side salad which went a little beyond what you'd normally expect, including olives, cherry tomatoes, and salad dressing. My friend enjoyed his Chicken Chat, while my Lamb Chops were tasty and reasonably well cooked. I would have preferred a bit more cooking to caramelise the tandoori marinade, and that would probably have saved me from the worst attack of tandoori pink fingertips that I've suffered for a long time. Our main courses followed promptly, the service was, for the most part, excellent - the only exception being when I was asked - presumably by the manager - if I wanted mint raita with my Lamb Chops. That never arrived, if you're not going to listen to the answer, don't ask the question! Main courses, we both ordered Biryani, and shared a side order of Mattar Paneer (cheesy peas). The main course portions were fine, and while the side dish appeared a little on the small side, it was enough. I always request that the vegetable curry (accompanying my Biryani) to be served Madras heat, and they complied - with a small 'bird' chilli sticking out of the sauce, presumably to identify it to the waiter! I think Biryani provides a good guide as to the quality of an Indian restaurant's food, and both of ours were really enjoyable. Not too dry, with a reasonable meat content. Drinks-wise as you'd expect there's a choice of lagers, Kingfisher and Cobra, either of which goes down well with a curry, and a reasonably well stocked bar. Over all, yes, it's under new management, and the menu is not adventurous, but for a basic curry at a good price, it was a good choice for the evening.

We will never dine in this restaurant again! Food tasteless - close your eyes and you wouldn't know you were eating indian food at all! It felt like faulty towers, hardly any staff and the owner is doing it all, cooking, serving, telephone etc. We even had to phone the restaurant to order more drinks as no staff around at all. On the plus side the food is extremely cheap, but I would personally prefer to pay more for quality and taste. It was very disappointing when the bill arrived on 2 separate occasions as a further £30 was added in error on a table or 6 covers and a further £20 was added another time in error on a table of 2. When the bills on both occasions were questioned the owner could not comment and advise what these charges were for and immediately took these charges off the bill. We would not recommend this restaurant at all - have a proper indian meal and got to Chilies next door, where staff are always attentive, bill is always correct and the food well its the best indian food I've ever tasted - don't just take my word for it - go and see for yourself the only thing I would say is make sure you book as they are SO busy as I m sure the majority of SWF go here as they know it is the BEST!

My husband had arranged to meet his friend, along with his partner in South Woodham for a drink and later a meal. He recommended the Nawab as he had been there many times before. It was Saturday night but the Restaurant was almost empty. The food was lovely, the service attentive and we were all having a chat and enjoying our evening. A couple came and sat at the table infront, we were really enjoying ourselves, when this woman told us to shut up, but what followed was shocking behaviour, she was swearing, making derrogatory remarks. You dont expect to hear language like this in a restaurant, and she just didnt know when to stop. I felt sorry for the owner because he seemed embarrased but not sure what to do. My husband then got up and went over to them, and the man involved backed down. It completely spoilt our evening, so mark from rettendon I think you need to teach your girlfriend some etiquette befor you take her to another restaurant. Will we go back, think that is a no, but not the fault of the restaurant.

The restaurant feels dated and doesn't have theclean lines that are so popular now. However, the menu is extensive and the staff helpful. I found the food delicious, as did my companions. Be aware of stairs to get to the restaurant.

Living in South Woodham Ferrers I have frequented the Nawab on numerous occassions and believe this to be the best Indian restaurant in the area. Most of the time the service is very good so the other reviewer must have picked an off day, in fact I think I was in the restaurant that day and due to staffing issues they were not up to their normal service. The food however is reasonably priced and back up to their good standards. A few years ago I believe the usual chef had left and things were not as good but can report that everything are very good again, the Naga is excellent as is their Lamb Tikka. Would recommend anyone to give the Nawab a go.

I visited this restaurant with my Sister who lives abroad and only can only visit once a year - so I wanted it to be extra good. How wrong I was.The meal started well with being seated and getting a drink within 5 minutes, however 45 minutes later and still no order had been taken, even after numerous times of getting the waiters attention, and having to watch waiters lay tables in a part of the restaurant that wasn't even being used. There was no real excuse for the slow service as the restaurant was only 1/3rd full. After a final attempt of asking the waiter to take our order - he came back a minute later - only to clear the plates away from the table next to us! Enough was enough and we paid for our drinks and left - having to get a takeaway from the Indian opposite (which I can recommend!)Night slightly ruined thanks to the Nawab - will not be visiting ever again!

My friend always gets takeaway from here. The food was absolutely delicious, moist meat, perfectly spiced, hot and tasty. Brilliant service and delivered early. Can’t fault. Don’t hesitate to try. Especially lamb biryani and chicken makhani.
