We visited on April 24th having read the good reviews on here. Arrived just after 6 and the pub was already quite busy ( always a good sign) but we got a table to eat ok. We then had an excellent pub experience of some good drinks and great food. The 3 young ladies who were serving both drinks and food were all very friendly, polite and efficient. The food was good British Pub food. I had Sausage and Mash and my partner had Gammon and chips. The pub itself was old fashioned but in the best sense, beams and fireplaces, loved it. Would definitely recommend but might be worth booking.

Had a lovely Sunday lunch and felt completely safe throughout. We both ordered the honey roast ham, which was so tender and had been cooked in mustard which added an extra spice. Prices very reasonable, with deals for 1, 2 or 3 courses. 3 courses for under £20 is a bargain for this area! I had the liver Pate as a stater and my husband had a small portion of ribs. Both were fantastic. We’ve just moved to the area, so I expect this to become our local. Lovely ales on tap and social distancing practices applied throughout. The staff are also really attentive, Our drinks didn’t stay empty for too long and our meals were delivered at a fast speed. Very happy, we will be back!

Absolutely love this pub, used to come regularly for Sunday dinners as a child & introduced it to my husband as a meal for his birthday. He fell in love with the steak, we came back again for our wedding anniversary & wasn’t disappointed, although they did have a Xmas party/meal & the bar area became overcrowded as they all arrived but this wasn’t a problem to us

Attended on a busy Sunday, taking the last table in the restaurant part. Lots of places only do Sunday lunch on sundays, but they had a full "specials board" with something like 15 dishes on it in addition to the paper menu. We ordered a lasagne and belly pork with root vegetables and pizza & chips for our 5yo, and waited. And waited. Eventually we asked about our order and were basically advised it was our fault for ordering off the board when they're busy. The regulars know not to do that, apparently. So now we know, and so do you. After what must have been 45 minutes, the food arrived, along with the information that it was the lasagne that had taken the time because it's all made fresh if only we'd not ordered that. The mind boggles. What does it even mean to make a lasagne fresh? presumably it was pre-made pasta. Did you make the bolognese sauce from scratch? If so, don't! Do like all the italian places that can turn out a respectable lasagne in 20 minutes. My son's pizza was very poor: a baguette covered in chopped canned tomatoes about 1.5 cm thick, with melted cheese on top. He couldn't stomach it, though the chips were fine, and he expressed regret that he hadn't ordered the fish fingers. We didn't feel at all heard about our issues with the wait and the child's pizza and left with the distinct impression that we should have somehow "known better" about ordering from the specials board under certain conditions still a mystery to us. Altogether a stressful 2 hour visit for which there was scant apology and no discount offered. The actual food was good. The belly pork came with a hearty portion of mashed and roast root vegetables and a delicious mustard sauce. The lasagne was rich and delicious. But not worth the wait.

First impressions were good, a smilng barperson a log fire and an extensive menu, served with drinks and quickly shown to a table, food ordered and now time to chat with friends who we had not seen for some time. All food is cooked fresh her so it does take some time to arrive, when I saw the food I would have waited all day for it. A lamb shank on a bed of mashed potatoes, minted gravy and al dente vegetables, my partner chose ribs, there were enough to feed two people, a mixed grill is not for the faint hearted, chicken in bacon with side dishes and home made fries, wow, wow, wow, we did manage to get through everything and then only two of us could manage dessert, chocolate brownie amongst the best I have ever tasted, a lemon cheesecake which was obviously made from scratch, this place is well worth finding, get there quick you might spot me in the corner as I will certainly be back.

Lovely walk through the historic Askham Bryan village to reach the Nags Head. Late lunch with my husband and we both went for the lamb burger. Initially surprised that it came with gravy but after dipping the burger and bread into it there was a fantastic flavour. I loved the chunky chips, which were crisp on the outside and soft in the middle. I really wanted to eat them all but was too full so with regret I gave them to my husband! Would definitely go again.

Chose The Nags Head as a convenience as my daughter works nearby. Kerb appeal of a traditional country pub with an aged, somewhat dark interior. Lunchtimes are often dangerous in quiet pubs but we were welcomed and served courteously. It was a sunny day so we chose to eat outside ordering from the min menu and blackboard specials. Chicken Kiev & Lasagne & Chips. Service was really attentive if a little slower than we'd hoped but the food was well worth the wait. Fantastic flavours, large portions and chips 🍟 Would I recommend The Nags Head, indeed, especially on a sunny day with time to kill and great company

I am a sometime visitor to this pub come restaurant but this was my first time for Sunday lunch. We were a party of four and all of us went for the steak pie. We were puzzled when the waitress came back and told us there were only three pies left. We were expecting a home made steak pie. I opted for the traditional roast beef dinner. When the food was served, our puzzlement was solved as my three companions were served "shop bought" steak pies, chips and peas. Terrible value for money at £12.50 per head. When my roast beef arrived, the meat was stone cold as were the other items on the plate. Vegetables were served separately and were piping hot albeit that the broccoli was almost raw and inedible. Deserts were modest and were all priced at £6.00 again awful value for money. Overall we were extremely disappointed with the food that we were served. The only complement that I can give this pub was the quality of service and the quality of their beers. My advice for them would be to sack the so called chef otherwise they will soon be closed.

One of my Dads favourite lunch time pubs is situated in the pretty village near York. The hosts are very friendly and the menu interesting with several 'specials' on the board. The lasagne is huge and very tasty with chips and garlic bread, enough for 2. The fish pie is also excellent value. The log fire is welcoming with dogs allowed in the bar area or you can eat in the dining areas. An excellent family run pub only a short drive from the A64 and York.

Service was good and the overall quality of the food was fine. It is a nice friendly pub with good pub grub. The Nag's Head has been standing at the farther end of the very pretty village of Askham Bryan near the path to its sibling village of Askham Richard. The pub has expanded to provide more tables for diners and this wanting to enjoy the summer sun in a plain but pleasant garden. There is a very decent menu and wine list, a choice of beer but the extensive daily specials provide the really interesting choices. The food is well cooked and the portions are large. One sandwich was enough for two. A great pub an easy drive from York. Bus travel more difficult with very few daily buses through the village and the regular service a good 20 minute walk away.

Not really for me, ordered lasagne which had been baked so much the bechamel sauce had completely disappeared or there wasn't any there to begin with, I returned it and was then presented with the original dish with melted cheese, which of course is not bechamel sauce. So as it was over cooked dry and not what I was expecting reordered gammon egg and chips which was fine , huge portion which totally over faced me and after the wait period I had gone past it. Wouldn't revisit and not particularly good value.

My Family and I were travelling to York for a few days and looking for somewhere to stop for lunch. We stumbled across the Nags Head by complete chance when looking for 'restaurants nearby' online and we weren't disappointed. A lovely village pub with a great welcome from the staff and wonderful service from one young waitress in particular who was very attentive, witty and made a great effort with our 6 month old. She even warmed up his own lunch which we had brought with us (might not seem like much but a lot of places make it seem like it is!). The food was brilliant; very tasty and large portions. Two of us had gammon and others had Chicken Curry, Moroccan Chicken and Lasagne - all of which were huge portions! The desserts were the best part of the meal, all absolutely delicious! If we're ever in this neck of the woods again we'll definitely be calling in.

Can honestly say I have never been so disappointed in a meal. We booked for a resonantly big party tonight well in advance. The service was terrible. We waited around 45 mins for order to be taken. The starters all had to be returned as the Camembert was cold in the middle!!! Main courses took an age to come and we waited an unreasonable amount of time for the final meal to arrive. Food portions were significantly reduced in size from previous occasions for example we have never been able to finish a portion of gammon before but it was considerably smaller as were the onion rings and the Camembert! I'm sorry to say the entire experience was so bad that I will never return for another mal. This is so upsetting as previously it was one of my favourite places to eat. You need to sort this out so unhappy :((

My wife and I had been cycling around an area West of York and were returning home. Quite by chance we took a different route through the village of Askham Bryan when we noticed this venue. It was a Wednesday afternoon but the place was quite busy with lots of people sat out in the 'beer-garden' at the rear of the premises,so we secured our cycles and went inside. We received a warm welcome from Anna and Scott who were on duty that day, and suffice to say they were extremely helpful in advising us on the beverages and 'fare' of the day. (If I may add it is good see young people so informative and helpful). They have a good selection of beers and spirits on offer as well as a very satisfactory wine list. For food they offer a selection of daily 'specials' listed on boards throughout the premises and also an 'a la carte' menu, all of which cover a wide variety of home made dishes.Meals are served from 12.noon until 9.00pm daily. We both opted for the home-made fish pie with vegetables of the day and actually ate in the bar instead of the dining rooms. The meal came quickly and was piping hot.Unlike some fish pies we have eaten, these pies were full of salmon, prawns etc all in cheesy seasoned mashed potato, and I have to say it was delicious. As is my usual custom I looked around whilst our meal was being prepared and the dining areas are quite extensive with seating for about 22 people and they can accommodate approx. a further 15 people in the bar areas. As I said earlier if was a sunny afternoon and people were sat out in the garden at the rear, however many folks like ourselves were eating inside.I noticed they were to hold a special 'hog- roast' out in the garden upon the following Thursday evening to celebrate the Queens 90th.Birthday. Now we know of this venue we will certainly call again because of the friendly atmosphere, excellent food and general appeal of the place.Give it a try you will be pleasantly pleased!

Okay - so you are probably not going to go out of your way to come and eat/drink here but, if you are in the area and wondering 'Will the Nags Head be okay?' then the answer is a resounding YES! Its a pretty typical British pub. Does that mean its a bit old fashioned? - yes, but who wants the old fashioned British pub to disappear??? What it lacks in modern décor and gastro menu it MORE than makes up for in friendly welcome and proper tasty pub grub. Dogs are welcome inside and out (water bowls and poo bags provided) and really well catered for kids, including Fruit Shoots. It is my sister's local so I've had reason to visit a few times but this last bank holiday weekend I thought the food was A-MAZ-ING. My cod (fish and chips and mushy peas) was proper, chunky, tasty white fish. My husband said the chilli was mega - not something he awards lightly being a bit of a chilli aficionado and cook himself. All of this tasty grub with an extensive drinks menu to match in really easy surroundings. Oh, and did I mention the chips are to die for?? What's not to like?? Don't change a thing Nag's Head.

What better way to eat on a Sunday than with a plate full of roast beef?!The Nag's Head is great - simple and straight forward, no pretention and great value for money. It's old school in terms of fixtures and fittings, but do Sunday lunch like a king. Other places should take note of this. The kid's portions of the roast dinner (value at £5.50 each) are fantastic - not like the over priced and tiny versions you get in places like Pizza Express and the like - this is a real plate full of food with Yokrishire's bigger than my hands. But it's not all about volume - the beef could have been a touch more pink for me, but it was still tasty and moist. The veg was delicious and the mash was great. As for dessert - the kids shared a knickerbocker glory which was huge and the wife enjoyed a bakewell tart with ice cream..Thje staff were very friendly and accomodating (and patient) with the kids (7-9).My only complaint of the day...? The pint of Timothy Taylor's was a touch too cold. But im just been picky..All in all, around £10 a head which I thought was very good value.

All round the table you get the nod from people as their meal lands in front of them indicating satisfaction at the start of the course and sight of the served dish. The food is varied from the traditional chips with everything to those people more conscious of their waistlines wishing more vegetable and new potatoes. There is a wide range of dishes through the starters, main courses and sweets: plenty to choose from.We meet as a group, recently formed and are relaxed and enjoy our meal. There were a couple of cars in the large car park and a small group sat in the very large and well kept beer garden( bunnies also here to view) . We went inside to the very welcoming bar area and asked if we needed to book a table. The lady told us it was fine not too as it was just the two of us and so we had a drink first in the sunshine. Once we had rested after our journey we went back inside to find a table, it had now become quite busy with only afew small tables left. After looking at the menu & the specials my husband went to order at the bar. On his return he was accompanied by a lady who informed us that she had a large party arriving soon, but we were ok to still order our meals! This put us slightly on edge as we then felt rushed and this hadn't been stated on our asking earlier and the tables that were empty had a reserved sign except ours!! However when our meals arrived they looked extremely appetising , presentation was excellent. We had the lamb burger and the chill. Afterwards we were both very full with no room for pud , plus we knew time wasn't on our side to wait!

Did a reconnoitre a few days before and booked a table for four. Good job we did, didn't expect a country pub to be so full on a Tuesday night. We got a good welcome at the bar, and shortly after were tipped off about an expected arrival of 15 to dine and we adjourned to the dining area. We chose from the bar menu on the blackboard and were not disappointed - two grilled chickens, gammon and three eggs, and a venison burger all done to perfection. The sweets were good as well, especially the Eton Mess. The service was first class, and without doubt this could become our regular. We will be back.

Lovely pub in a beautiful part of the country. I cannot wait to go back and try out some more of the menu. The food was excellent. Good menu selection too. The staff were also very pleasant and made you feel very welcome. Not much more I can say, except keep it up! Will be back in a few weeks.

This pub is always our first choice when we want to go out to eat. Last night we went out to celebrate my dad's birthday and had a fabulous meal again. Mum and I had monk fish and my husband and dad had venison they were cooked perfectly and delicious. The menu has a choice of traditional pub food and finer dining dishes. All are beautifully cooked and presented. I have always found the owners and staff warm and friendly. They also have a selection of local cask ales on tap too. Just have to add not sure where the photo at the top is but it is not of the Nags Head in Askham Bryan

Decided to treat ourselves to Sunday tea and wish we hadn't bothered. We ordered Chicken in red wine sauce and were given a chicken dinner with Yorkshire pudding when we asked the waitress we were told the red wine was in the gravy. It definitely wasn't, the meal was tasteless except for the veg, what was more disappointing was that nobody was interested in the fact that it we werent happy.Wont bother to return

Suggest you go to pub website for photos. The ones above are of a different nags head. Maybe not even in York. Who knows. I am trying to meet the minimum character requirements for reviews now.

I've eaten at the Nags Head a dozen times and honestly, every meal has been delicious. I know there have been some bad reviews of the service here, but it's improved a lot in the last few months. I recently ate a meal with 4 other family members and we all loved the food, it was top class, the staff were attentive and we had a great time. Well worth a visit.

Echoing the thoughts of a review 3 months ago....... I've eaten in this pub on dozens of occasions over the years. It used to make superb fish and chips !!! Every time I've visited though, with current staff and previous ones, there has never been a proper warm welcome. We're used to the abrupt attitude of the bar staff and we don't let it put us off but today we called in for Sunday Lunch. We ordered a couple of pints and asked whilst the first was being pulled if they could squeeze two in for lunch. We got a long story about 40 people coming for lunch within 15 minutes without an answer to our question. When we repeated the question and helpfully suggested we could sit 'anywhere' (they used to serve food in the bar area when the restaurant was full) we were told it wasn't possible because the kitchen was too busy. Needless to say, we drank up, left, and won't bother to return this time.

My partner and I visit every so often as we live in York, and his family comes from Askham Bryan. The pub is an absolute gem - beautiful building, friendly staff (and locals!) and good drinks selection. We regularly eat there, and the food is wonderful. We tend to stick to the sandwiches, paninis, omelettes etc (as opposed to the pricier, gourmet options) but these are excellent value for money and well-sized portions. Sometimes the cheese can be a bit rich, although worth it to know (as detailed on their chalkboard) that most ingredients are locally supplied :) everything comes with home-cooked chips (to die for) and yummy dressed salad. On sunny days, it's lovely to sit out in their gorgeous beer garden, which features a real lawn (unusual for beer gardens), and usually lots of friendly dogs!

After going to the Copmanthorpe art group exhibition we decided to give the Nags Head a try. I had been in for a drink a few weeks ago after playing cricket at the college at Askham Bryan & the menu looked good. We were shown to our table & our drinks were added to our "tab". For starter I had the pan fried pigeon breast with fresh apple & apple sauce, very nice. My partner had the smoked haddock fishcake with salad and mustard dressing, it came in the shape of a ball rather than the usual flat shape. My partner said it was very tasty but two fishcakes would have been better, shows it was liked! My main was the pork fillet on a black pudding rosti with a bowl of chunky chips, this was lovely. Pam had the braised lamb shoulder with new potatoes & green beans with a minted jus, again beautiful. I indulged in the banana split, one of the best I have ever had. A couple of cokes a coffee & three pints of Timothy Taylors Landlord completed the evening. The service we received was fine, friendly & with a smile. Give this pub restaurant a visit.

The food is perfectly fine and prices ok for a village pub. The menu is good and you can have 'pub favourites' or something a bit different from the specials board so there was plenty of choice. The thing that let this down for me was the slow service and less than warm welcome (although it was a Saturday night and quite busy so those things may have been one offs.)Overall, I wouldn't go back on a weekend when it is potentially busy but would go back for a lunchtime bar snack as the food was nice.

Visited this pub for a meal a few times now and the food is the nicest food i have has in a long time from a pub, we both had garlic bread for starters and tasted so nice also the presentation was just as fabulous and for main i had the homemade burger served in toasted bread and salad served with homemade chips and salsa and sauces it was best burger i have had ever, the pub was not swanky looking but this does not matter the food was to die for and cant believe how i have never heard of this place before. Would highly recommend this pub for a lovely meal 10/10 for taste and presentation

A very pleasant pub & restaurant in the pretty village of Askham Bryan to the west of York. A nice garden at the rear suitable for families. A blackboard by the Bar lists the names of local suppliers of meat, fish, vegetables etc. On my visit there were 2 guest beers. The lunchtime menu is quite varied and comprehensive. I had a smoked salmon omelette with dressed leaf salad and chips; it was one of the nicest omelettes I have ever had – large, moist and perfectly cooked. Food is served everyday from noon to 9.30 pm – nice to see such a realistic evening “last food orders” time. As at the time of posting my entry, the photo is not that of The Nag’s Head Inn at Askham Bryan, York but of The Nag’s Head in Covent Garden, London. This might account for the poor review from redsx5 (Bad Streak) which is out of kilter with other reviewers of the York pub but in step with those reviewing the Covent Garden pub.

Portion size very big, no room for pudding! Good value, it was busy so waited an hour for food which felt long but hey ho. Not enough staff poor girl serving and lady behind bar rushed off there feet. Hire more staff or you will loose custom. Really nice pub overall, nice garden with rabbits for the kids to pet.

Visited this lovely hidden gem on a Friday afternoon with my partner (who has been before and had thorougly recommended it). Was fairly quiet with only a couple of other tables dining. Has a lovely old pub charm with open fires and low beamed ceilings. They had an excellent selection of starters and mains on the special board that included mussels, rack of lamb and venison sausages plus a standard more mainstream menu. I had a lamb burger from the specials board and my partner had steak The food was presented beautifully and tasted just as good. They obvioulsy have a very talented chef! The bar and waiting staff were very attentive and polite. Cannot recommend enough - this place is definately worth a visit if you're in the area or not! - it's only a 5 minute drive off the A64 just outsde of York.

Had a lovely meal here tonight a cold crisp Monday in January! Two groups of people enjoying themselves made for a good atmosphere in the pub! The starters were tasty and well presented and in no way small portions as described in previous reviews. I had the chicken wrapped in bacon, tasty and moist and the mash was creamy and the beans had a lovely bite to them. My husband chose the 21 day old sirloin cooked to his liking, tasty and juicy! We both ate all our meal but had no room to taste the puddings of excellent choice and sounded delicious! We left full to bursting and will return soon. Compliments to the chefs and friendly staff!

I've been here more than a dozen times and have never failed to be delighted. Great English, cooked well and some nice beer, what more can you ask for.Worth making the detour off the busy A64 to find this place only a few minutes drive from the junction signed to Askham Bryam. Drive past the agricultural college and head for the village and take a left at the T junction, the pub is 200m on the left. They have a massive range of food for such an out-of-the-way place, the sandwiches are fantastic and really good value but loads of other things to try. All of it is consistently good quality. They serve from 12 - 9pm so no silly closing hours. Try the Timothy Taylor's beer, one of the best around. If I had one small criticism, it is that the place could be a bit more homely but still, get comfortable and enjoy a great lunch/dinner.

Fantastic food, I had the battered cod, the biggest and best I have ever tasted. All of us could not rate the food high enough, whatever our selections were. Everything was perfect, lovely atmosphere, well cooked fresh vegetables and a good selection of ales. We will definitely return for more of the same when next in York

I'm surprised that no-one has previously rated this excellent pub / restaurant as the food is very good. The food is cooked from fresh so there is usually a waiting time. Our meal for four took around 35 minutes. Staff were friendly and helpful and there was a reasonable selection of beers / drinks. Interestingly, they have a board prominently showing their main suppliers and I was pleased to see that meat is supplied by our favourite butcher, Richardsons of Woodthorpe. All round good experience.

Stood at the bar for 15 minutes, constantly being ignored people getting served ahead of me. Another customer commented on it to me. Absolutely shocking service. Never again!

The maltings it a large traditional pub. There is a good selection of beers, lagers, and cider, including hand pulled cask conditioned real ales. The cask conditioned ale i tried first was a stout and not in good condition, so i changed it for a bitter, which was better. The pub is featured in the camra good beer guide.

Been here a few times over the years. Now a Nicholson's pub. Walk into the covered courtyard from Goodramgate and you have a choice of two bars, one to the left and one to the right. Both have a good real ale selection. Very busy early evening a week before Christmas. Ic and Flic found space on a large table with people moving up for us. A good pint of Golden Doubloon from Laine brewery. A lovely large pub with a restaurant area for more formal dining.
