Outstanding Veggie Sunday Roast. Superbly presented and so delicious I treated myself to pudding. It was one of those starving Sundays where I was feeling depleted and required a substantial repast. The Celeriac & Mushroom Nutroast came with carrot puree, yorkshire pudding, stuffing, roast parsnips, carrots, potatoes, tenderstem broccoli and gravy. Feeling significantly restored, I treated myself to an exquisite serving of Chocolate Delice, honeycomb and miso caramel with salted caramel ice cream. Having walked here from Bovisand Lodge Holiday Park, I was more than ready for the return stank. I should also mention that as a solo visitor at no point was I made to feel uncomfortable by staff or other diners. A wonderfully friendly, supportive and warm welcome awaits...

Chose The Mussel for a quiet spot of lunch with my husband. We have dined here regularly over the years and have always enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Sadly, today was the first time we’ve had cause to send food back. My husband ordered the monkfish curry and unfortunately the sauce was bland and tasteless and the monkfish was watery. The dish was replaced, which we can’t fault, but I was left to eat my lunch whilst my husband waited for his replacement, which came after I had finished mine. Somewhat spoiled it, and for £80+ for lunch and a couple of drinks, I’d want the meal to be faultless. No offer of a free drink to apologise. I think it may be time to find a new favourite. A shame.

There's something gloriously British about our full English breakfast tradition and treating family to Saturday Brekkers at The Mussel was well worth it particularly as it turned out to be the last brekkers date of the Summer Holiday holiday season and even in season is only available as a seasonal special on Saturdays between 9 & 11am. In the same price bracket as nearby Cafe restaurants, there was plenty to like including the selection of menu options, waitress service, old country inn ambience, scrumptious hash browns, fresh ingredients, lots of wholesome, thick sliced toast and little pots of frothy butter whipped up into beehives. We tried 3 different breakfasts between us. The full veggie english, non veggie big english and eggs benedict. One of our party did enquire as to preserves for the toast but this wasn't an option so don't ask for jam on it. Other than this I know where I'll be having breakfast next season should the restaurant decide to bring their Saturday special back. Bring it on...

I’ve glowingly reviewed The Mussel before… We went last night for my son’s birthday. All of the main courses were very nice as per usual. And then nothing. We were left with empty glasses whilst the tables around us were attended to. Still nothing. We might have liked a dessert or maybe some more drinks. The boss lady was asked for the bill and after a 20 minute wait my wife prompted a waitress to bring us the bill. Apparently the reason for the poor service was staff training. The thing is, staff training doesn’t pay the bills. The bill would have been bigger had you have served us.

This is a great pub for food and or just drinks. We’ve been coming here for a few years now when we visit Plymouth and it is always an absolute pleasure to eat lunch or dinner. Had the mussels this time and they were lovely. Quality of food is outstanding and to complement it the service is very efficient and friendly and what is striking is the staff have remained the same over the years which indicates great management. Well done your a great team and are a fantastic example of great hospitality in an industry that seems to have lost its way in the UK.

We booked a table last minute for two adults and an 8 year old, booking was quick and simple. When we arrived we were greeted immediately by the most friendly waitress who made us feel welcome and comfortable. I ordered the catch of the day with mash, pea puree and vegetables, the meal was the most delicious food I have ever eaten, fresh, perfectly cooked and flavours were amazingly balanced. My daughter had the mussels, which were lovely and my husband had a burger as he isn't a seafood fan at all, the burger was amazing and he was very happy with it. The deserts did not disappoint and were fresh and light but also sweet and delicious. We will definitely be back in the future when we are back in the area and 100% recommend this restaurant for any visitors or locals who fancy something nicer. Thank you!

Decided to eat outdoors instead of our table booked for inside due to the lovely weather, staff were very accommodating & advised that the bar menu would apply for eating outside. Menu had great choices. Expansive bar, lots to choose from. All the staff were friendly & helpful. Dogs are welcome & we noticed a great feature outside - a dog washing station including dog shampoo, so ideal if you'd visited the beach first (off-season) or had been walking & gotten muddy. Really nice touch, along with a water bowl outside, too.

Very busy even though mid week and fab all the way: service, food and drinks, apart from the rather noisy group with several young children who seemed out of control at times. The staff were incredibly patient and let them do their thing. At one point I feared the waiter carrying a tray full of drinks would be tripped up by the smallest young adventurer, but he valiently made it to his table without spilling a drop. Very tricky for staff to deal with this type of customer, especially in a packed venue. They deserve medals.

I SO enjoyed my crab starter, it actually tasted of crab *unlike some other venues) and was delicious. However I was rather overpowered by the spice in my main: Thai salad with steak. I must say I am not used to spicy or hot curry foods, so probably a poor choice on my behalf, but I thought Thai would mean mild. There were a lot of sliced peppers, which I ate much of, and I enjoyed the cashews and steak, plus noodles, just on the hot side for my taste. I finished off with a lovely choc mousse desert and a cappucinio, so overall pretty happy.

The reports on Trip Advisor of the food was tempting enough to visit. We had lunch with friends. Food was good, seafood pancake was the best dish. The fish and chips lacked flavour and the deserts were hugely disappointing and expensive for what they were. Wouldn’t bother with them again, waste of money. Staff great. Our lunch was somewhat ruined by a family on the next table whom has three young kinds you kept banging their cutlery on the table. Making so much noise that we couldn’t hear each other speak. But that is not the pubs fault. Generally very good. Need better chairs to sit on and more interesting deco within the pub. This would lift the dinning experience. Next time I’d opt to sit in the restaurant area, which looked better. Would I go back, probably.

Took my mum here for Mother’s Day and I had heard so much good things about this place. To look at its lovely but it is so small and loud if you want to eat in the restaurant. We moved to the bar area to eat which was a little better and more lighter . The roast lamb was extremely fatty and when we told the waitress she didn’t offer anything to compensate this or even apologise- how ever she did mention she would tell the chef. It was a hectic place not very relaxing and enjoyable to be honest. I originally made a booking online and was later called by the restaurant demanding for the money to secure the table. Perhaps they need to manage this through the website as I didn’t find it very pleasant at all. A warning would have been nice. When I went to pay I wasn’t asked how our meal was all they wanted was the money. Not great :(

We stayed for a week in the Tawny cottage. From pre arrival we had great communication and help with our booking. On arrival the cottage is gorgeous three large bedrooms with en-suites. A cosy living area with kitchen and dining. Everywhere was designed to give a luxurious feel ! The hot tub was amazing lights speakers and more jets and water features than ever had at previous lodges and cottages. It had everything you could need for a comfortable stay and views opened out to see surrounding fields. We had takeaway pizza and Greek food from the street food vans and a drink in the pub. We also had two amazing meals the Mussel Burger, Chicken Supreme and Thai green curry were amazing ! Service was great and all the staff were friendly & helpful. It had a lovely atmosphere and dog friendly. It’s such a relaxed area and full of charm. From the cottage there are fantastic cliff & costal walks. We walked to Bovisand beach and along to Jenny Cliff then another day we walked from Bovisand to Haybrook bay and back. We also did Wembury point to Wembury beach then back to Haybrook. Great walks and views on the doorstop. On a rainy day we visited Plymouth and visited Barbican area for a meal. Then once the rain cleared a circular walk to the Hoe and lido and back to the harbour. Would recommend a trip to Dartmouth great views, lovely shops and great atmosphere at the food festival. We used the park ride and also walked to the castle. Lovely pub/restaurant with very friendly staff. Ate here whilst staying at The Mussel Cottages(fantastic self catering cottage and they offered to bring food down to the cottages if we wanted!) and couldn’t fault food or service. “Mussel” burger lovely and catch of the day was very tasty John Dory, not tried it before but was delicious. Big bowl of mussels in classic sauce was delicious just needed a bit more bread to mop up the sauce 🙂! Good selection of drinks, plenty of gin choices and also very nice cocktails. Food not served Mon/Tues but there is takeaway food provided in the car park which you can eat in the pub! Cottages were perfect, everything we could ask for, very home from home, even a slow cooker if you want to make a dinner to come back to after a day out. Only thing I found tricky was no simple instructions for hob and oven, but a quick google worked🫣 Very comfortable huge beds and 3 en-suite rooms, ideal for families or friends. Smart tv in every room an big comfy sofa for evenings, and of course WiFi! We had hot tub which was used, even in the rain! Big enough for 6 too. Easy to get to Plymouth and surrounding area and within easy reach of coastal walks. Definitely a place I would come back to! Thank you for the warm welcome and wonderful cottage.

A good all round experience but make sure you sit in the main dining area rather than the little room at the far end of the bar.

Came here with my wife today on recommendation of our neighbours and it was amazing! Beautiful place and really really peaceful. We wanted a nice meal and a bit of a chill out after the kids have been off school for 6 weeks. Inside is stunning, and it’s really clean and laid out well. You don’t feel like you’re on top of other people. Toilets were immaculate when I nipped in. The staff were really attentive and friendly, especially the lady behind the bar and the chap who brought our food out to us (I assumed he was the manager). We both loved our meals and then went to sit outside to enjoy our pints overlooking the fields in the peace and quiet. It’s nice to know there’s a well looked after playground if we returned with our kids. We’ll definitely be returning here, thank you.

Where can I begin.. we chose to have our wedding at the mussel inn & cottages and the service we received from Jamie, Katie & all the staff was second to none. Nothing was too much! The food for the Friday evening was incredible, a party of 36 all served at the same time & no mistakes what so ever!! Booking so last minute you allowed us to have exclusive use of the beautiful venue and surrounding. With the park to keep all the children entertained too! Cannot recommend enough - the cottages are stunning too - thank you Louisa.. will be back soon ❤️ Thank you for making our wedding so special.. x

We had an excellent Sunday lunch at The Mussel Inn in Down Thomas. The food was beautifully cooked and served. The waitress was very friendly and helpful presenting the menu and the Manageress ensured we had a lovely table in the restaurant. The food was reasonably priced too! We will definitely be returning.

Visited here for Sunday Lunch, good quality food let down by the meanest portion of vegetables I have seen for a table of 4 - it would have just been OK for two, and even then less than generous; we asked for another potion but that only gave each of us two slices of carrot! Not good value at £16-17 pound for a main course.
