We had a stop in Abingdon on our way to Oxford. A leg stretch and looking for a place to have just a light lunch and a drink. We stumbled upon the museum and in the course of checking out the Crossley Pumping Engine in the basement decided to have luch there. The cafe is only open till 2pm but with half an our to spare we managed to get an order in for 2 toastie cheese and ham sandwiches. Hardly a particularly exciting lunch you may think, but there are toasties and there are toasties. Ours were excellent and just hit the spot after a pleasant visit to the museum above. Sometimes you just stumble on these places and have to pass them on to thers. If you are a veggie get there earlier than 1.30 as apprently the veggie versions take a bit longer to prepare.

We went here today for the first time and were tempted by the festive turkey sandwiches. We weren't disappointed at all. Very tasty and huge! Very friendly lady served us and seemed to genuinely enjoy what she did. Thank you.

We love going here, I can't recommend it enough. Everyone describing it as a 'hidden gem' is completely right. It's just underneath the Town Hall/Museum and is lovely whatever time of year you go. Hot drinks are only £1 and the cakes/scones are delicious. They offer a variety of teas, including breakfast, loose leaf earl grey and loose leaf 'Abingdon tea'. There are a few board games and books there too for anyone who wants something else to occupy themselves with while there. The staff are always friendly and very welcoming, the food is delicious and well-priced. For anyone visiting Abingdon (and even the locals) this is certainly worth the visit.

Tucked down below the museum is this tiny little coffee/tea shop. Hot drinks are just £1 😳 and despite the lack of space, you are encouraged to stay a while with books for adults and children.. crossword books... a dressing up rail (just for children 🤣) and this all makes it feel very welcoming. Plenty of choice for cakes and snacks. And a friendly girl serving.

The staff are always friendly, the food is simple but always delicious, the setting is quite amazing and the prices are very reasonable. This is my favourite cafe in town, without-a-doubt.

It is fun to go down under the museum to have lovely fresh food and drink. The sandwiches are excellent as are the small salads and lovely cakes. Down in a side room is the old pump machinery that kept the mouse hole dry many many years ago. A fun place to visit.

We visited this little cafe for lunch with my 5 year old son after being recommended it by a friend. We were not disappointed. From the warm welcome of the staff, to the delicious food, nothing was a problem. There is even a little area off the seating plan, where little ones can learn about the history of Abingdon water pumps and watch an old pump work whilst waiting for their food. The cafe is situated in the basement of the Abingdon Museum, so after (or before), you can pop into the museum for a nostalgic look back into the history of the town.

I enjoyed my toasties very much. Inside was far better than the near by Greg's. I would recommend eating near after looking around the museum.

The best Toasties in town by a country mile.I visited the cafe with my daughter and Son in law for a snack.I was a bit sceptical about the self acclaimed best in town toasties claim. However the cheese and tomato toastie I ordered came with fresh salad garnish and the toast beautiful and crispy. No doubt in my mind the best I've tasted and could be the best in uk.

All i remember about this cellar cafe under the Town Hall is from my 1960 shildhood. One day it was busted and shut down for years as local Mods and Rockers had apparently been using it deal pep pills. I stuck my head in the door the other day & it wasnt like that any more. It was a clean boring sandwich bar with mediochre coffee. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz All right for the simple minded housewife perhaps but for anyone craving that little extra naaaaah.

My daughter and I booked afternoon tea here last Sunday and it's the best place for afternoon tea so far that we have visited. I emailed an enquiry and had very prompt replies. When we arrived on Sunday our table was laid out beautifully and fresh sandwiches were brought immediately with small bowl of crisps and large pot of tea. Once we had finished the sandwiches then they brought the cakes and lots of them and scones were warm. Had such a lovely experience we will re-visit soon. Do not visit Abingdon without calling in to this beautiful tea shop.

Arrived in Oxford for a car service and needed something to do so drove to Abingdon and found this lovely little restaurant in the basement of the Guildhall in the market place. A warm welcome from the friendly staff. A basic but varied menu much of which is made by the staff. Coffee, teas, light bites and light lunches all good. They were baking fresh scones while we were there. Very clean cafe set in the old caverns, great, well worth a visit.

We decided to have lunch here after visiting the Museum. (A friend had already recommended "The Mousehole" to me previously.) As we walked in we were welcomed by a friendly face at the counter - We found a table and looked through the menu - after deciding what we would like I gave our order to the pleasant young lady who served us - our order was taken and within minutes it arrived at our table. There was a very varied selection of food and drink on offer. I had the Jacket potato with tuna mayo this came with a mixed salad. My sister had the soup followed by a cheese and ham toastie. The children decided to go for the "mini mousehole" lunch - this consisted of a sandwich, some grapes and a drink. We finished our meal with a generous portion of caramel apple pie which was delicious! The children had sultana scones which had been freshly baked. I had a cup of tea and my sister went for the hot chocolate. The meal was very satisfactory and the whole experience was a very pleasant one - The cafe is very cosy and a very unusual place to have lunch - it was nice to see the food being prepared in front of us too. All in all at a very reasonable price and a nice place to spend our lunchtime! Would highly recommend. We will be back.

We visited here for the first time in ages. It is a little gem, it's hidden away under Abingdon museum and well worth finding. Abingdon has so many cafes but this one has its own personality. The prices are very reasonable and the food is excellent. The mouse hole is well worth a visit.

Always keen to support an inde overthe usual chains I found this lovely little bolthole right in the historic centre of Abingdon. So much potential. It's so cute. But despite the lovely person serving and the reasonable coffee and cake, the salad I was given was probably worse than my mothers from the 1970s. Lettuce, tasteless tomato, cucumber and Tuna tipped on top. Masses of it but it was so dull and tasteless. And at £6.95 madly expensive. Hopefully management will read this and think a bit more about what you can also put in a main course salad! I think the young worker there is delightful but needsSome help!

We discovered the cafe on a walk around the town. You can enter via stairs from both sides of the museum building or use the lift (suitable for disabled customers). It is a cosy little cafe with original stone walls and tables to seat about a dozen people. We only had tea and cake, but the menu was good. The cakes were fresh and home made and the tea plentiful. The staff were lovely and one of them brought our order up when we chose to sit outside and enjoy the sun. There were special events advertised at the cafe and we loved it.

We have recently moved to the area so we're on the hunt for a light lunch somewhere on our first visit to town. We looked at a few options as there are lots of cafes in Abingdon but eventually decided on this little cafe. It's no good for wheel chair users or pushchairs if they can't be carried as the cafe is below ground with steps at the entrance, inside the walls make you feel a little like you're in a cave but it's not a bad experience. The cafe has been decorated well, is light and welcoming; the staff are very friendly and happy to answer any questions you may have.We were here for a light lunch as such my wife had the ploughmans lunch which I wasn't too impressed with from its looks but she said all the ingredients were top quality. I had one of the flat bread options with chicken chorizo which was very good indeed. Drinks were a tea and luxury hot chocolate which were both of good quality. There is free wifi if you want it, toilets and some interesting historical displays with information boards that make this a little gem of a cafe in my opinion. We were impressed with the whole set up to be honest and based on this visit I'd happily recommend it; we will be back for sure.

The Mouse Hole is a neat little Coffee Shop, tucked away under the museum. Its got a really nice little atmosphere, WiFi, friendly staff, and not to mention, good coffee! Came here with a friend instead of going to the usual Costa for out coffee, and it didn't disappoint. If you've been Costa before, you know the drill. But if your local, fancy a coffee, then give this place a try before you give in to the usual cuppa Costa, won't be disappointed.

The Mouse Hole cafe has a lovely, relaxed feeling with the added bonus of fabulous coffee. I love having coffee served in a cafetiere, so this was great, and the big bonus for me was there was the option of almond or soya milk to suit my needs! Although I did not have any food, it looked tasty and many people ordered sandwiches whilst I was in the cafe. Also, the staff are friendly and happy to accommodate any requests. What a fab little cafe!

Beautiful old building with a cosy cafe in the basement. Steps down should be approached with caution. There are about 4 maybe 5 tables at the most. Staff are nice and friendly (but watch out for the unbelievable frosty Curator)!!!! Food is nice but quite pricey. There's lots of damp in this cafe and the ceiling often crumbles ...... hope it doesn't drop into the food! The engines are worth looking at, though notice they've been affected by the damp. There's a disabled lift for wheelchairs and pushchairs which goes down into the basement - if it's working and you can get past the weeds that have grown in it. It takes an age as you have to buzz for a member of staff to assist - and the lift is open to the elements so lots of rain, leaves and dirt drops down below too. Not the best lift. The museum is worth a visit, but personally I don't think its sympathetically done. Such a grand gallery but is dominated by oversized cabinets obscuring the full length view of such a beautiful room.On the whole a pleasant visit, but there are better cafe's to go to.

Today we visited the mouse hole where they had a free sewing workshop for the children. myself and a friend decided to have Prosecco on the rooftop which was an amazing experience, we felt like royalty and the staff were all so lovely, the views are breath taking. Down in the Mouse Hole we came down to a beautiful cream tea in bone china cups and teapot. Emma the lady running the Mouse Hole was so friendly and extremely accommodating at such short notice. Excellent value for money, amazing staff and the food and drinks we had were all very tasty. Thank you we will definitely be going back.

Yet another fantastic meal at The Punchbowl. I went for the Mushroom Bourgnignonne Pie on this occasion which was wonderfully warming on a wet and somewhat miserable day. Yum, yum!
