Had a lovely couple of nights here. Room was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The continental breakfast was very good and the evening meals were amazing and of a very high standard. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Would recommend a stay here.

We had an overnight stay at the Moonraker and have to say we were very pleased. The room was large with a massive and comfortable bed. It was clean and could not fault it. We ate in the restaurant on our evening there and the food was excellent. Service in the evening and also at breakfast was quick with the staff very friendly and helpful. The meals are not really cheap "ping" food but well worth the little bit extra.

We had booked for afternoon tea but waited quite a long time for food although the drinks arrived fairly quickly. I consoled myself with the fact it was being freshly made. No-one came to check if everything was ok as I would have liked hot water to top up the teapot. Sandwiches delicious, cakes fairly mediocre. Just a few couples in restaurant so no atmosphere. This was a Travelzoo voucher deal so maybe you get what you pay for.

We had a dog so had to take a 'superior' room which opened straight onto the courtyard. It was nice enough, but nothing special, being not very large and done out so it felt a bit dark. The bed was very comfortable and it was clean. They seem to have problems with their drains, so don't put stuff down the loo - one couple had a problem with the smell of a blocked drain outside while we were there. The gardens are lovely, although they are rather neglected. Someone at some time has created a large kitchen garden, not much of which is being used. The ponds were short of water and a lot more could be done with it all. We didn't have dinner as the menu looked like an expensive pub menu - fish and chips, burgers etc. At breakfast, I was glad because both the quality of the food and the way it is organised were poor. The coffee looked like tea and tasted of nothing, although when asked to, they did strengthen it with a shot of espresso. You have to order your breakfast in advance on a form, and there is a supplement for a 'full English' breakfast. There is no choice about what you get - everyone has the same, which is silly and first for me. For the price, this should be improved dramatically.

Further to review before going to bed having stayed overnight we discovered a nappy and 2 further items: an empty coffee sachet and apparently Russian food sachet in room in the coffee tea cups... Nappy looks used but not soiled but not going to smell it. I thought it was a 'towel' when saw on bed, but friend asked me same question during night. We then realised it was left behind Also had loud clumping upstairs from 9.30 to after midnight and from 7 to 9am this morning preventing sleep... Woke up both feeling tired. Will probably hand in to reception when leave and 'thank' them. Can only assume novice cleaner interrupted while cleaning yesterday and forgot to return to finish job

I have been to the Moonraker a couple of times before and have always enjoyed the food, such a beautiful location. We went for an impromptu meal with friends, although menu is quite limited due to Covid-19, there is still some good choices on there. All safety measures are in place. We all chose the Pork dish which was absolutely lovely, meat just melted in your mouth. Desserts were also nice, I had the sticky toffee pudding which is my favourite, only thing I would say it was alittle overcooked so wasn’t that moist on the inside but it still tasted lovely. Overall we all had a wonderful meal, all staff were friendly and helpful, great customer service.

Stayed here on a Travelzoo taster menu voucher. Firstly the positives - staff pleasant enough and accomodating, hotel easy to locate, room was warm, and food OK. For me, combining hotel reception (with the highest counter I have EVER seen!), the restaurant and "bar" (it is literally just a bar!) all in one room just doesn't work. In the room, no dressing table/mirror for wifey to do her hair either. Toilet was a little stained too (room#8). From the photos we were anticipating a few drinks, by a fire, in a lounge-ish area. Maybe that's an issue with our expectations. There was another small room with an unlit fire, which didn't appear staffed really. The restaurant staff seem a little inexperienced, and completely disappeared for around 15 mins towards the end of our meal (at ~9pm). We gave up on a coffee and returned to the room. One particular annoyance (I did comment at the time), was the price of the wine. £7 for a 175ml glass of sauvignon blanc works out at £10/250ml glass, which is extortionate (£5.35/250ml at the Lock-up cafe down the road). Also, serving it in one of those cheap small round glasses just to make it look full is a bit tacky. All in all, if I were staying there for business, then it would work well as a base - the quaint but vibrant town of Bradford-upon-Avon is only 1.5 miles away. As a couple's weekend break, there wasn't enough at the "hotel" for us. The place seems to be primarily a wedding venue, which I'm sure is very nice, but lacks a few creature comforts for random guests.

My wife and I stayed here last week for 2 nights, the first night of which included a 5 course tasting menu. The food was beautifully presented and generally tasted very good. The one comment I would make relates to the pork belly. It was not traditional pork belly but pulled pork shaped into a portion, which wasn't as nice as the real thing. The service was friendly but not over-bearing. A very pleasant stay, despite the weather!

The hotel is set back from the road and the drive and car park need serious attention - in wet weather be sure to bring sturdy footwear. The menu is short and well thought out. But some parts of my meal needed more care; for example the sprouts with my otherwise excellent turkey roast were really hard, and the base of my less excellent cheesecake was even harder.

Varied menu, reasonably priced. However the pork belly (which both my husband and I had) needed a lot more cooking! The accompaniments- smoked mash, black pudding bonbons and veg were delicious. But the meat it’s self, having eaten it out many times, and. Poked myself, should’ve been melt in the mouth fat, and a salty crispy top. It unfortunately had neither, and was just plain old pork. But it didn’t ruin our evening and stay, and we’d defiantly stay/eat again! Very friendly staff also.

This is a charming, very non-formulaic old hotel with bags of charm and it suited the event perfectly. We had the whole place to ourselves from Friday evening to the Sunday and I really couldn't fault anything. Accommodation was lovely (thanks for the four-poster bed!), the arrangements for the weding had all been brilliant and the food, throughout, was exceptional. The main hotel building looks a bit random, its probably 19th century. There are a range of more modern out buildings where many of the rooms are located. The site, as you drive in is rather unprepossessing and somewhat scruffy, but don't be put off. The receptionist was charming and efficient. She took us to out superior room in one of the outbuildings. The room was large and spacious with a large comfortable bed, some comfortable chairs and a bathroom with shower and bath. Our room had distant views of the "white horse" at Westbury which was charming. We were here for the 5 course tasting. It was interesting and different although, ultimately a bit disappointing not least because the "main" course of the 5 was a 16 hour cooked small piece of beef which was just like a bit of over cooked beef stew. This is a dog friendly place - good if you are a dog lover but for those of us who are not, to have a minor dog bark off between 2 dogs in the restaurant was not that appealing. The breakfast is good and the sausages come from the pigs they keep on site. The site makes great play of their own smokery but it wasn't available while we were there. If you are there for a couple of days as we were, Bradford on Avon is a delightful place and there are lovely areas around. We thought we would go into Bath but the the surrounding areas are so attractive we didn't bother . Laycock, the Courts garden and the Dundas viaduct are all worth a visit

A big bed, plump pillows and duvet. The restaurant is a country style with a big roaring fire at one end, occasionally a little smokey but hey you can’t have a real fire without a little smoke. We came here for the tasting menu. We were given this as a birthday present. The restaurant is an odd lay out and the decor is dated. The food was ok however i am glad we did not pay full price for this as it is not worth it at all. A small critic is that the waitress did not know anything about the spirits they offer behind the bar therefore had to walk across the restaurant into the bar to have a look for ourselves to choose - i feel this is basic knowledge that any waiter/waitress should have. It was good for a once off but won't be returning for the tasting menu again.

We booked the 5 course tasting menu (with wine flight) to celebrate my wife's (and her twin sister's) birthday. Where do I start? The initial communication was fantastic, we indicated our 'dietary' requirements, received superb responses and on the day, an absolutely perfect welcome! The waiter was charming and knew exactly what was required! Sipping an English dry wine on the sofas, we were then shown to our table. Smart casual is how I would define it! To start we were offered delicious home made bread, and which the waiter pointed out was accompanied with truffle butter, asking which of the table had a 'difficulty' with mushroom. He had brought an alternative butter! From that point, it just got better and better! The pea veloute, the pigeon breast, the cured mackerel, the Lackham pork 3 ways and the chocolate and honey cremeux. All served with smiles, charm and a relaxed approach that made us feel very welcome. The wine flight was spot on also. We have eaten at a Michelin star restaurant previously and we did say, this 2 rosette was edging towards that refinement and quality. Would I recommend this restaurant to friends - without a doubt, a real gem that shines out amongst other venues in Wiltshire!!

My wife and I had dinner here on a voucher and tried the five course tasting menu with wine flight. The menu looked extremely appetising but we were somewhat floored by some of the combinations: the first course of home-cured salmon was gorgeous but the following course of terrine was spoilt & overwhelmed by the addition of truffle oil on the terrine - which wasn't bad after the oil had been scraped off! The Veloute "cleanser" was anything but and was a cloying mush of indeterminate greens - very strange. This was followed by Venison: pan fried loin & braised shoulder - the loin had a strange consistency as if it had been cooke sur vide and the braised shoulder extremely dry - but the "gravy" was fabulous! The last course of rhubarb was very disappointing in that the rhubarb was tough, stringy & undercooked and was served on a bed of ground sugar which was just incompatible with it.

My overnight stay on Monday 27th November 2017 was a real treat. It was my first visit to this hotel and everything from beginning to end was faultless. Welcomed at a cosy reception (with a real log fire burning in the background) by a delightful receptionist who personally showed me to my room and assisted with my luggage. The room was very spacious and full of character- the bed was of very large proportions and most comfortable. I had dinner and a drink from the bar in very nice and characterful surroundings. The food was excellent and I would warmly congratulate the Chef in that respect. Further, the service was impeccable- discreet and nothing was too much trouble. I returned to my home the next night and called in at my local pub and in discussion with a friend there he remarked “oh, my wife and I recently stayed in a most excellent hotel in Bradford upon Avon”. I've been to many hotels who claim to be dog friendly. That often means they can stay in your room but little else. Here they really are! Firstly you can eat your meals with the dog in a beautiful lounge which has the main restaurant at one end and the doggy part at the other. The staff are incredible and will do their best to help with any of your queries and make your stay special. The rooms are not only big but beautiful and wherever you go it seems you are walking into someone's home not a hotel at all. Their is a large paddock to exercise your pet which is more than ample for any size dog and the over all ambiance is relaxing and friendly. It is so unusual to find such a dog friendly hotel I have steered my review around that, but non dog owners should not miss out either The Moonraker is a must stay if you need a hotel in this area.

We attended a family wedding at this venue. They had told the bride-to-be that there were disabled facilities. What they failed to explain was the only disabled facilities were contained within one guest room which was 1) up a step, and 2) the room was booked! Shocking provision in this day and age especially as there was a recently developed part of the complex - so whilst they tried, they cannot use the age of the building as an excuse. Added to the total lack of access, the food was undercooked. Very disappointing overall. The staff were very pleasant and helpful, and understandably embarrassed.

We selected this hotel because of the good reviews on Trip Advisor and when we first arrived we were very pleased with our choice. The hotel had contacted us about one week prior to arrival to enquire whether or not we would like to dine in the restaurant on the night of our stay. We confirmed that we would and booked a table for 7.30pm. Upon checking in, the receptionist asked if we would mind amending our restaurant booking to 8.00pm. She explained that they had a large party booked in but that they would have left the restaurant by 8 o'clock and it would be quieter for us to dine. This we did. We were then shown to our room which, again, we were very pleased with. After settling in and getting changed, we decided, at about 7.30pm, to go to the bar for a pre-dinner drink. This, unfortunately, is where it all started to go horribly wrong! After waiting a while at the bar to be served, we ordered a bottle of wine and two glasses. The barman, unable to find any wine glasses behind the bar, went to locate some. After a few minutes he returned without glasses, having been, in his words 'sidetracked'. He asked where we were sitting in the bar area and offered to bring the wine and glasses to us, so we went to take a seat. The bar seating area, rather than being a separate room, is simply a small section at the end of the restaurant. The large party, that the receptionist had mentioned to us, were still dining. What she omitted to mention is that the large party were at the hotel for a wedding the day after and contained a small number of children who were, for want of a better word, a little boisterous. Had the hotel informed us at the time of booking that they were hosting a wedding, we would have stayed elsewhere or certainly gone out to dine elsewhere. This however, turned out to be the least of problems. The waiter eventually arrived with our wine which he simply placed on the table, with the two glasses and quickly disappeared. Not only did he not ask us if we wanted to taste the wine, he didn't even open the bottle. Fortunately it was a screw top or we may have had difficulty! By 8.15 no one had been to show us to our table or offer us a menu, so we went to ask for one. A waiter then appeared with two menus and left us to make our choices. When he later returned to take our order, he apologised and informed us that not all the main courses were available. He then went on to explain that, out of nine or ten main courses on the menu, only two remained. We had a choice of steak or risotto, neither of which we particularly fancied. By this time however, we had consumed a couple of glasses of wine each, could not drive anywhere else to eat and there is nowhere within walking distance. The waiter told us that he had been authorised to offer us a free dessert by way of compensation but as we very often don't eat dessert, we declined. We reluctantly ordered the steak and the waiter started to quickly make his way back to the kitchen, so I called him back to tell him how we wanted it cooking. We were shown to a table at 8.50pm, by a waiter who left us to carry our own wine glasses and bottle. The large wedding party were still dining and we waited, in an atmosphere not exactly conducive to relaxed dining, for our steaks to arrive. We waited for approximately fifteen minutes before they were brought to us. The steak was accompanied by a small pot of stone cold Bernaise sauce and container of chips. I tasted a small piece of the steak and was surprised to find that it was, at best, luke warm. Upon cutting it in half ,I discovered that rather than being the medium rare that we had ordered, it was actually raw and cold in the middle. My wife's steak was exactly the same. We called over the restaurant supervisor, who was extremely apologetic and told her that we would like to speak to the restaurant manager. She informed us that she was off that night and gave us her email address so that we could contact her. Whilst I appreciate that everyone is allowed time off, it seemed an extremely strange choice of night to take it, leaving what were obviously inexperienced staff, to cope with such a busy restaurant. At this point, our patience exhausted, we decided to leave the restaurant and go back to our room, explaining that we did not expect to be charged. We were asked if we would like to take a cheese board back to our room with us! We declined. Half an hour after returning to our room, the restaurant manager knocked on our door. She was very apologetic and confirmed that we were not the only ones who have been unhappy with the service in the restaurant that evening. The reason she gave for the fact that the restaurant had basically run out of food, was that they only use natural products. I'm still not sure that I follow the logic of that one! In any event we spent a rather hungry night in our room. When we checked out the following morning, were not charged for the meal (that we hadn't eaten) or the wine but the receptionist knew nothing of the shambles that had taken place the previous evening, seeming to think that we had simply eaten elsewhere. I appreciate that weddings are very lucrative source of revenue for hotels but they should not adversely affect the stay of other paying guests. At the very least, the hotel should inform you when you book, that the hotel is hosting a wedding at the time of your proposed stay, in order that you can make an informed choice. As I stated at the start of this review, we chose this hotel because of the positive reviews and it may well be that we were extremely unlucky but my advice would be, unless you are particularly partial to cold steak or risotto, make sure that they are not hosting a wedding during your proposed stay.

Used to come here when it was The Old Manor and there is such a difference. The food is excellent: beautifully cooked, reasonably sized portions and ethically sourced... what's not to love? Staff are brilliant - addressing regular guests by name and remembering what they like to eat, drink etc. The restaurant itself has undergone a transformation that now seems complete. The smell of a wood-burning fire, authentic decor but with modern amenities. I come here as a business visitor, but would have no hesitation in coming here for leisure.

We went back for another visit to The Moonraker for an evening meal and were not disappointed. The staff are welcoming and friendly. They have a good selection of drinks, and some great gins which we enjoyed, in their small but very well stocked bar. The food is excellent - from the homemade bread with the honey butter (flavoured from their own honey), to pork two ways or duck, to the classic apple crumble with home made custard. Its fab to know we have such a great place on our doorstep and will definitely be returning again.

Food was to high standard, but not a wow. Cheese board was the the highlight. Staff were very friendly and attentive. Bath Ale on tap always a winner.

I stayed at this hotel as a wedding guest. The wedding was weli organised and the staff very friendly. My room was No 3 and it was ok.Quite pleasantly furnished. There was very little noise from the party after the wedding. The room had no proper shower just a bath which would not suite every one although I was fine with it. The hotel has been taken over recently so perhaps they have plans to refurbish,One thing I would suggest is that they provide a mirror closer to a power point (over the chest perhaps) Breakfast was very good. Overall plesant stay..

We were invited by friends to join them for dinner last Friday. They had been given a 20% discount voucher following an unsatisfactory previous visit to The Moonraker. It was a pretty appalling experience!Four out of our party of six had very poor meals, and two who had ordered "confi of duck" as a main course had to send it back.. It was so tough that it was virtually impossible to cut the meat off the bone! I ordered an egg & scallop risotto starter to replace the duck main dish, only to find that the egg was stone-cold and the scallops were only partially thawed. The only positive factor of the evening was that the "liquid chocolate" dessert was absolutely delicious. The front-of-house staff tried hard throughout this entire experience but appeared to be badly lacking basic knowledge and training. The wine list was also very limited. This is a large restaurant and it appeared to be almost full to capacity so perhaps our experience was an exception, but given our friends prior experience I am not convinced.None of us intend patronising The Moonraker again.

On each occasion the food has been excellent, the service discreet but effective and the hotel's wine list is sensibly priced. Clearly, this menu is excellent value for money when enjoyed via an Amazon discount voucher, but the hotel's a la carte menu also appears to represent good value although we haven't eaten off it yet. We are not the customers who return regularly to restaurants unless we get good value and we will definitely return to Moonraker's.

We knew absolutely nothing about the Milking Parlour only that it was offering a Taster Menu on Amazon with vouchers., so we thought that we would try it. I was impressed to know that Gluten free and any other allergy/ intolerances were offered. On the evening we arrived and not sure where the Milking Parlour was we went to the hotel Reception,We were welcomed pleasantly by a gentleman who then guided us to our table.. We thought a happy evening was ahead of us. As we entered the restaurant we were impressed with the candle lit tables and the ambience of the whole area. A waitress arrived (One of two staff managing all the tables!!) asked what wine we would like to order? We replied that we like to see the menu before ordering. The Taster Menu was produced and my husband looked and as I have various allergies and noted that dishes were not suitable for me. Never mind, I said the Chef has been informed when we booked the table and on the morning before we were dining, so he would have prepared an alternative to offer as other restaurants have done. As the chef had not taken into account my dietary requirements , I was unable to have the muse bouche, no alternative was offered so I asked if I may have some olives and then had to ask for some bread to go with them. The next two courses beetroot ,goats cheese and salad, and the smoked salmon which was delectable and I really enjoyed. MAIN COURSE !!!? I pointed out that there was not one dish available that I could eat. Each time I repeated this the young man went to speak with the Chef (Four times). Could the chef not offer a breast of chicken or a plain salmon dish I asked? Each time the chef replied it was steak and chips only plus a £5 supplement !!! I told him that he had been notified well in advance of my allergy requirements and had he not prepared an alternative in advance.as I was told on booking that it would be no trouble. Finally a breast of chicken with green beans and mash potato or monk fish tails was offered. Why, could he have not offered that when I suggested it at the beginning.?Such a disappointing evening, I so needed a happy time with my husband . We decided in future keep to the restaurants we know and we are sure of a successful evening. It hasn't paid off to try these offers I feel. Good Luck to the Milking Parlour, we will not be returning.

I have made positive comments regarding this restaurant in my review of the hotel. My wife and I enjoyed the 5 course taster menu and we had absolutely no complaints at all. The 5 courses were focussed on Pork, Beetroot (fabulous dish), smoked salmon (lots of smoked salmon, lamb rump (I once asked to go to the Falklands so I like lamb and this was good, and a chocolate pudding. The menu describes them far better :-) We asked for a bottle of Prosecco to accompany our meal; not because it particularly complimented each dish, but it seemed a good compromise across such a variety of flavours. The wine was fresh and pleasantly chilled. We finished with coffee, which was pleasantly flavoured. We ate breakfast in the same restaurant and we found the choice really good, with a vegetarian cooked option too. The muesli my wife described as fabulous, I chose the weetabix and yogurt option, with the yogurt being really creamy. we both had smoked salmon and scrambled eggs and once again we had lots to eat. We finished off with toast and preserves and thoroughly enjoyed both meals.May I say that I have enjoyed better meals and lots and lots which were not as good, however, sometimes it is the sum of a number of factors which make a memorable visit. For us, the staff were welcoming from our arrival through to departure, the prices, whilst not keen, represented exceptional value for money illustrating that we felt that we got more than we paid for and I would be very disappointed if we did not visit this hotel and restaurant again.I note that there have been some less flattering reviews of this venue; ultimately I am sure that some people have not enjoyed their experience as we did, but I can honestly say that there are many venues in Bath and the surrounding area that are nowhere near as good as this one.

In line with other recent reviewers my wife and enjoyed the restaurant's five course taster menu this evening. Other options are available. The Old Manor House is a beautiful building that, it would appear, has been recently and tastefully decorated. As the name suggests its Milking Parlour restaurant and bar is set in outbuildings, that have a welcoming, charming and cosy atmosphere. We were shown to our seats, and it was explained that as we had chosen the taster menu we would not get a menu, but each of the set five courses would be fully described. They checked that, as stated on booking, my wife was allergic to fish and said that was no problem and that an alternative third course would be provided. We chose a bottle of Shiraz from a reasonable wine list and a bottle of sparkling mineral water. Each of the courses was well presented and beautifully constructed. They were tasty although the dishes were a little safe. I was expecting something a little more, perhaps experimental... Or that maybe showed off the chef's talents. Breaded mushrooms with garlic alioli and pickled beetroot with goats cheese, were both very acceptable, but hardly 'radical'.The waiting staff were good humoured, and worked in a casual but efficient manner, even as the restaurant started to fill up. Smoked salmon was followed by a main course of pork and a treacle tart desert. I suspect the size of each portion received might have be smaller than if ordered from the a la carte menu (except the treacle tart... which was hearty), but all were larger than the description 'Taster Menu' might suggest. The menu price of £55 for the meal could not really be described as low, but using an Amazon voucher rendered the meal extremely good value. I feel that generally the menu prices were reasonable but I would advise friends not to expect a particularly cheap evening when recommending this restaurant. Was it worth it? I would say that, for a special evening or simply a treat, then yes it was. We were pleased with the experience and would recommend The Milking Parlour as one of the best restaurants in and around Trowbridge; and would happily state, for what it's worth, that this was one of the better restaurant meals we have had.

My husband and I had a voucher to experience the 5-course tasting menu at the Milking Parlour which meant that it was remarkably good value for money. I had thought the drinks might therefore be expensive but this was certainly not the case. The food was excellent. I had been concerned that 'tasting menu' implied that the dishes were just a taster - but they were perfectly-sized and I felt like I'd had a substantial meal at the end of the evening. I had requested the vegetarian menu - this was no trouble at all and every course was delicious. Our waitress was friendly, bubbly and informative. She really enthused about the food she was serving. The beetroot and goat's cheese course - which I understand is a signature dish - is exceptional. My husband is still talking about it! We booked quite an early table (6.45) and I'm glad we did as by the time we came to leave every table was busy and the tables are quite close together - this would really be my only criticism.

We dined here using an Amazon Local voucher - a 5 course taster menu. All the courses were excellent as was the quality of the food and presentation. There were no choices offered however they catered for my request for 'no fish' with a scrumptious alternative. My husband said the fish course was the best course of the night - smoked salmon with a celeriac remoulade- the salmon is smoked on the premises. We were served by a delightful waitress called Olivia who was extremely bubbly and cheerful-explaining each course with enthusiasm. So refreshing to see someone enjoying their job-a real asset to the restaurant.A tip-if dining on the taster menu-order veg with the meat course. It is charge as an extra (I must say a little steep at £3.95 for a serving of green beans) however the meal needed it as it was so rich.Perhaps the restaurant should offer veg as they serve this course. We live locally but had not heard of the hotel or restaurant before. We would return (if only just to be served by Olivia again!) to dine from the A la carte menu so obviously the use of the Amazon local promotion has worked for the restaurant. However it does seem a little over priced for the area.

I had high hopes of this place and indeed it is a nice space and has a rustic atmosphere, but I was disappointed with many aspects of our dining experience. We were not greeted as we entered and after some time the barman bumped into us and so we asked to look at the wine list. This was extremely limited. For a decent restaurant to only offer 6 whites, 6 reds a couple of roses, 2 sparkling and 1 dessert wine is a bit surprising, but maybe informative. To be then told that they were out of 3 of the whites was nothing short of a scandal. Why had someone not noticed and done something about it? A bad start. The staff - there apperared to be only 2 working front of house were competent but did seem a bit stretched. No bread was offered - which again seems very unusual. The menu was a la carte - and had a reasonable number of courses. However the food standard was inconsistent. My wife had the smoked salmon which was plentiful and tasty. I had the scallops - sadly! The base of the dish was overcooked and too hot and tasteless whilst the scallops themselves were bland. The mains - rib eye steak were O.K. but the triple cooked chips - which came in a separate pot reminded me of pork scratchings - I couldn't find a single decent potato in the pot - just bits. We were not tempted by any of the desserts. The after dinner coffee was nice. I had high hopes of this place but these were unfulfilled. Such a shame as the hotel itself was of a much higher standard. Had I been staying two nights I would not have eaten in the restaurant a second time.

Like many other reviewers my wife and I visited The Milking Parlour using a discount voucher and dined on the five course tasting menu. We have often said we should give the restaurant a try and this was an ideal opportunity to do so. On entering the spacious, elegant yet cosy dining room we were greeted by a cheerful, friendly, helpful waitress and were soon seated with drinks. Having been given a brief run-down of what to expect from the menu we selected a French Sauvignon to assist the gastronomic process. We noted that the wine list is a little limited but the range was probably wide enough to cover most tastes and accompany many different dishes and our choice suited us and our food quite well. Our four savoury courses were a field mushroom ‘fritter’, cooked in Parmesan cheese and garlic seasoned bread crumbs rather than batter, followed by a subtly pickled tender beetroot dish with micro salad leaves; home-smoked salmon, again with a salad and lastly a chicken thigh, flavoured with rosemary served with linguine. I have to say that each of these courses was a delight to eat, well cooked, beautifully seasoned and flavoured with herbs and nicely presented. I’d certainly be happy to try the a la carte menu based on the flavours presented thus far. It could be argued that the portion sizes were slightly over-generous on a couple of the courses but other diners may well disagree with that. As an allotment gardener I admire the fact that the chef is trying to use as much fresh produce from the restaurant’s own garden as possible and I look forward to returning when he has more vegetables in season, and as a keen amateur cook I am always happy to be served food that is beyond my own abilities, as this was.We needed a breather before we were ready to tackle dessert but having finished our Sauvignon we couldn’t resist sampling something else from the wine list, we plumbed for a New Zealand (I think!) Shiraz and a French Carignan, both of which were very enjoyable. The dessert, when we were eventually ready for it, fell a little short of the standard set so far I thought; being a rather unadventurous slice of flan I found it acceptable but uninspiring whilst my wife was rather more pleased with it – a matter of taste I suppose. When our food was finished we retired to the lounge area and relaxed with whiskey and a cup of tea. I was a little disappointed with the choice of whiskies available but the Bushmills Irish hit the spot nicely. In addition to the high quality of the food I was impressed by the serving staff’s knowledge and enthusiasm for their work and the products, they seemed to enjoy the evening almost as much as we did. Both were attentive throughout our stay without being overbearing. In my view the experience fell just short of ‘fine dining’ for the lack of a few refinements: notably they do not use table cloths and I felt that the head/wine waitress’s clothes were a little casual – that said, regardless of the high standard of their food, The Milking Parlour does not claim to be fine dining and their web site advises there is no strict dress code, indeed many potential customers may find the relaxed atmosphere preferable. All in all we were both impressed with the food and the experience as a whole and will definitely return to what must be the best restaurant food available in Trowbridge.

This was a second visit to the Milking Parlour , and although the service and staff are good, a tasting menu needs to be just that. This was a repeat menu too,, with no variation from several weeks ago. .Serving heavy plates of food one after the other,, starting with deep fried mushrooms, followed by beetroot salad, then a large plate of smoked salmon, followed by fatty slow roast pork belly, then topped off with a hefty slice of treacle cake and clotted cream was more than this diner could take.A real tasting menu should be just that. Small tastes of varying flavours and textures.Maybe opting for the a la carte menu which we were told changes more frequently, would be a better option. The Parlour is a lovely dining room, with well spaced tables and a comfortable pre dining area for drinks or coffee, so it is a shame that the food does not match up. Rethink that menu and this could be a place worth returning too, but at present unless you are looking for quantity over quality, best to avoid the tasting menu.
