Good atmosphere, tasty food, nice little beer garden and a good quiz on Monday. The open mic night is also worth dropping in for as the standard is usually pretty good

Nice pub with a big terrace in the garden, you can have a good meal if you don't want to go to the city. You order the food at the bar and they'll bring it up to you when ready. Good food and friendly staff.

Beautiful little pub with a deceptively large rear garden. Recently refurbished with a great selection of beers and friendly staff. Definitely worth venturing away from the city walls to experience.

First visit to the Monument for my wife and I although not our first time in Canterbury. We went on recommendation and were delighted to find such a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere. Staff are thoroughly professional and friendly. Good choice of beers, ciders and wines and an interesting menu. Meatball lasagne was a new taste experience for me and the burger much enjoyed by my good lady. Our experience was so enjoyable that we returned the following evening to watch England play on TV where we amongst a group of really friendly 'locals'. All in all, a lovely place to eat, drink and be merry!

Small & friendly, yet to eat there! Beer & spirit prices are acceptable, unlike other local pubs that tear you new one! Recommended

It’s an OK pub, the locals take a bit of getting used to. The saving grace are the staff who are excellent and friendly. Garden is ok but a bit sparse and needs a bit of love. Problem is the landlord, who just looks like he smells. He’d rather hold court around a table with a similar minded group than offer any help to the team or indeed be attentive enough that having customers standing isn’t a great look when the Landlord hoards several tables. He would be better served also not wearing that jumper.

Had the best night at The Monument... it was Quiz night and the pub was buzzing.. had a wonderful dinner, check out rhe menu it's fabulous. We had heard about quiz night as we popped in for lunch on Sunday and they had a pianist, which created a good vibe... We were on a weekend break to Canterbury and so pleased we found this pub.

Decent place, during certain hours it can be filled with some stuffy types so I rate lower on the atmosphere but it's not the fault of the staff and can't be helped, still worth visiting though don't get me wrong 👍

Canterbury has many public houses, however, most of them belong to the local brewer Shepherd Neame. It is refreshing to find a Free House which is warm and welcoming and serves good food and a different range of beers. The beer is well kept and the food of good quality. It's also dog friendly, even though I don't have a dog 😂. Visited on a Sunday and they had a lovely pianist, playing. It was a really lovely atmosphere and very friendly 🍺❤️🙂

I have never eaten here as a bit expensive and the portions look small. But great atmosphere and friendly service. We like it on a Sunday afternoon with the piano man.

Stopped in there in way out of town, for a few drinks with friend, sat there minding our own, then open mike night started, brilliant watched 3 good singers, then I of the bar tenders asked us to leave, that's odd I thought but apparently we'd said something inappropriately about a crossed dress singer! Not , I had noticed he was drinking everything given to him when I walked in, and I thought to him, and was very rude the way he came across, spoilt our evening,bar staff should be able to treat every one the same,☹️

One of the best places to eat in Canterbury that ive tried. The menu is updated quite often, so i'd encourage a few visits across the the year to really get a sense of how good the food is - the chefs know their stuff. My last visit with my girlfriend i had the lamb burger and it was well balanced and cooked to perfection. I've had this at least 3 times when it was an option, as well as dishes such as the beef rendang and meatball lasange were also very tasty. The bar staff are lovely too! And if you go on a Thursday you can enjoy some wonderful live piano music. Strongly recommend a visit!

Lovely. Better than ordinary pub food, amazing burger! Portion sizes were generous but not too much. Happy to be accommodating to cooking requests (extra crispy (rigid) bacon)

Stopped in for a drink before heading into Canterbury. Lovely cosy pub with plenty of seating for the size. Was nice to see that they had alcohol free beer on tap. Staff were all very friendly and great to answer any questions.

Students Pay Attention! This is on your way to and from UKC, and is easily one of the best places you can visit. Both homely and modern, stylish yet relaxed, filled with a great selection of different styles of drinks. The staff are knowledgeable and very friendly. Other aspects make the place shine, whether it's the quiz, or the musical national gem of Luke Smith, who not only does his own music once a month, but also providing atmosphere once a week with eclectic covers I haven't tried the main meals yet, although the menu looks superb, and they source their ingredients locally, so it'll probably get to 5 stars once I have tried. As an aside, the place is full of genuinely good books (I'm an ex-bookseller) that are available to buy.

Great pub, not cheap but variety of beer and wine as well as a range of high quality food. Can get quite busy. On Sundays and Thursdays there is live piano. Well worth a visit!

Unexpectedly good experience, considering it's on a busy intersection. Great and friendly barmaids, and surrounded by lovely people having conversations instead of eating (though there's food available - but it doesn't interfere with the pub vibe) or looking at their phones

My friend found this place and asked for a table ahead of the rugby. The staff were so accommodating & lovely - it felt like it was our local rather than a new place to visit. The menu is small & perfectly formed. We were really impressed with the flavours & quality of food. Definitely recommended!

We came back for a second meal as really enjoyed our first. It is a fairly small pub, so book on a busy evening. One of the things I really liked was the fact there wasn't music blaring out, meaning everyone could talk at a normal volume. The staff are the asset here, very friendly and welcoming, with time for everyone. But the food also needs a shout out, as this tasted home made. Between our two meals we had sea bass, meat balls, chicken salad and mushroom risotto. All delicious. If you sneak around the corner opposite the end of the bar, there's a whole shelf of games which are worth exploring.

Great little pub just outside the city centre. Nice vibe, cosy, plus they have Lucky Saint (non-alcoholic beer) on tap. Recommended if you want a pub just off the beaten track that’s not rammed with tourists etc

Visiting our daughter at Kent Uni with the family and our dog and needing to find a dog friendly place to eat, we stumbled across The Monument online. And what a find it was! Relaxed, quaint and traditional, just our perfect kind of pub, with a lovely big beer garden where we were able to take full advantage of the unseasonably warm October weather. We moved inside to eat, the menu looked interesting, and we can honestly say, between the 7 of us and across 3 courses and coffee, the food was outstanding, home cooked and packed with flavour. The staff were super friendly and welcoming too, to the humans and the animal. We’ll be visiting Canterbury lots over the next 3 years, and have already found our “local”. Thanks for a lovely afternoon.

Beautiful little pub a real gem in Canterbury. I've recently made the poor decision to go alcohol free and but miss a pint and this place does lucky saint on draft so I'm very happy about that. Haven't tried the food yet but will do soon it looks great. Service always polite and quick

I came for the quiz with a bunch of my uni friends and had a bite to eat and was a lovely time. Definitely a new regular spot for the Monday quiz - staff all so lovely!

Friendly and welcoming staff, amazing food and lovely atmosphere! Prices are very reasonable for drinks and food. There is also a very big and lovely garden with plenty of seating I highly recommend the mushroom burger 🍔

Popped in very lunch on Sunday. Pub was very welcoming. We sat in the garden with our dog. Water was offered for him too. Menu was diverse with plenty of options. Food was delicious. Would definitely go back.

Excellent pub quiz every Monday, highly recommend. Food menu has changed significantly from older reviews. Garlic mushroom starter was very tasty. However, cheese board was unfortunately underwhelming considering price.

I ate here twice and had a very good experience. The food is great (try anything with mushrooms!) for reasonable prices, they have a lot of beers and ciders and the waitresses are kind and attentive. Also good to know: this place is super family friendly! The mixed/baby bathroom even had wet wipes. Also a really great atmosphere. Classic bar with people of all ages. The garden was also ideal for our toddler to play around with other toddlers. Everyone was also very welcoming to us as tourists, while there definitely is a very "local" feeling.

Once again we all had a fabulous meal my lamb chops were perfect. The Monday night quiz is great fun. The Monument is by far our favourite place to visit when in Canterbury Sam and his team are friendly and always professional . A cold drink in the garden in the sunshine is bliss.

Excellent food and friendly staff

Went there on our visit to Canterbury when we were looking for a pet friendly place.The starters where lovely but personally I was truly amazed with the fries with parmesan that was recommended by the girl behind the bar who was also very friendly. The burger that I ordered was amazing. My mum wasn’t very happy with her veggie option as it was a little bit much curry which wasn’t specified on the menu. Overall it was a good time and if we ever go back to the city we will come again to this pub.

Would highly recommend to anyone, food is beyond fantastic with an exciting veggie/vegan offering and the drinks on offer are phenomenal (this included niche selections that I don't often see and staff happy to listen/are truly accomodating). This place is such a rare find, and a true gem nowadays. Not only this, the atmosphere is friendly, beautiful and warming from entrance to exit, decor and otherwise, I honestly cannot wait to go back with others. Nice work!

I come to the Monument most Mondays for what I believe to be the best quiz in town. The publican graduated from UKC and puts together the quizzes himself--they're such a hit that I have to get to the pub 2 hours before the quiz...
