Regulars here. It has lately tended to close early & randomly but this seems to have stopped now, which is good as its the most "proper" tea room in Canterbury, with an excellent & wide ranging list of teas of all types, excellent cakes & all the usual tearoom trimmings (scones, afternoon tea, & a good voice of savoury offerings)

A very warm welcome to our pre-booked afternoon tea. £69 for three of us which I felt was a little expensive. Having said that the service was excellent, the food nicely presented, fresh with a very good choice. The venue was quaint and over 500 years old. The one minus point was the toilets, they need to be cleaner.

This is where you go in Canterbury when you want a proper cup of real, loose tea, and some wonderful homemade food and cake. We're regulars, so we already love the Moat. But we had to leave a review after our recent, superb cream tea in the garden. The sandwiches were exceptional (incredibly tasty, great range, perfectly presented); the scones were freshly baked; the cakes were - as always - delicious. The huge range of real, loose tea is pretty much unique nowadays, as coffee dominates, so the tea is a reason to drop in even if you're only thirsty and you want to remember what real tea tastes like! (They do have lots and lots of top-quality coffee, too.) As always, the staff were welcoming, expert and friendly. The garden was really pretty and it's a relaxing place to sit. It's lovely to see the place reopened after lockdown (even if 'outside only' when we went, in line with the rules). Thank you for our tea!

Oh My Giddy Aunt! The Moat Tea Rooms are an absolute must if you are visiting Canterbury. Situated very close to the town centre, I stumbled across this stunning building which is steeped in history. I opted to have breakfast here mainly because of the character of the building but from the second I stepped in the door I knew I was about to experience something quite special, particularly with the warm, friendly welcome I received. The hostess offered me a table downstairs or up, and I opted for upstairs in order to take in the full magic of the building, She very kindly took the time to chat to me about the building itself, even giving me a leaflet about the history and it’s past residents. With a vast selection of specialty tea, I ordered a pot of Breakfast Tea and the Avocado, egg and salmon on toast. The service was second to none with my ‘leaf’ tea arriving in a generous size pot, cup and saucer and a strainer. My breakfast also arrived very promptly and was again beautifully presented and simply ‘Lush’! I literally cannot wait to go back, as next time I will most certainly indulge in a ‘cream tea’ as the cake selection was to die for. The long and short of it is ... I doubt I will ever find another Tea Room quite like this.

We couldn't help noticing this charming, ancient tea room, with its window full of sumptuous, clearly home-made cakes, on our wanderings around the centre of Canterbury, so popped in, even though we weren't hungry. They have a huge selection of loose leaf teas, beautifully displayed in coloured tins along an entire wall of the downstairs area, but also offer an excellent range of coffees from all over the world. There are only a few tables downstairs, so most guests have to go into the two, delightful rooms upstairs, reached via a rather steep and narrow staircase, which is definitely a challenge for the poor, elderly waitress, who, I confess, totally reminded us of Julie Walters, in the "Two Soups" sketch! We sadly, didn't have the appetite for the wonderful menu of both sweet and savoury items, including cream teas for two, with champagne for around £65 (there was a cheaper, prosecco option for around £55). However, we saw other people eating them, and they all looked fantastic. We had already had lots of tea that day, so opted for the "espresso coffee" section of the menu (bit boring, I know, when there were single estate beans, described with the same vocabulary normally reserved for wine lists, on offer!): an Americano for my husband, and a half shot latte for me, as I am actually pathetic re coffee, and probably should just go for hot chocolate...We felt we would never forgive ourselves, if we didn't at least try some of the enticing cakes on offer, so my husband bravely chose the Victoria sponge, and I, the Rocky Road. The sponge was an enormous slab, with almost as much filling as cake, whereas my choice was more like a chunk of solid chocolate with a hint of biscuit, smothered in mini-marshmallows. Somehow, my husband managed to finish his, but I wrapped half of mine in a serviette, and actually ate it with a cuppa on our return home the next day!My husband really enjoyed his Americano, but my latte was too strong and bitter for me, despite adding lots of sugar, and stealing my husband's leftover, warm milk. However, I am sure that is more "my fault" than theirs, as I know my taste in coffee is childish, and my coffee aficionado friends all laugh indulgently at me, as I add yet another sugar to my cup...We definitely hope to return to Canterbury again before too long, and we will make sure to visit the Moat Tearooms again, too, this time with empty stomachs, in order to sample more from their menu...
