Shambolic experience recently when we went for lunch. They had a funeral wake going on with loads of people. Car park was full, with total chaos as cars were trying to enter/ leave and then find somewhere to park. Service inside was appallingly slow and not helped by very unpleasant lady at the counter. Apparently some people who had booked just went away due to the situation. Its was a great pity as this is usually a very good place to eat.

This is a really nice place and looks like it's been recently refurbished. Great menu and plenty of gluten free options. We both ordered off the lunch menu which is very reasonably priced. The food took over 30 mins to arrive but was well worth the wait, it was all made fresh and was piping hot. The only thing thing that let the visit down were the staff they were not the most welcoming.

Eight months since I ate here last, and it's lost none of the magic. I'm not going to try to recall all that was in the duck dish. Suffice to say a range of wonderful flavours that combined beautifully. I try to resist desserts where I can but spotted the brownies with pistachio ice cream and honeycomb at another table - and was powerless. It was certainly worth the indulgence! If you are looking for somewhere special to celebrate, then look no further!

Met up with friends for a late lunch,3pm. Although, besides the lunch menu we were offered the al a carte menu as well. I had read in the local magazine about their fish feast sharing platter. Delicious !! There were four of us so we had it as a starter between us and there was plenty. Nobody liked smoked salmon so we requested a replacement which wasn't a problem. It was lovely service. Nice break between courses. I have been here a few times and never been disappointed and obviously will go again :) Lovely staff and service

Pre- Booked table and arrived 10 mins early. Shown to seat and then had to wait nearly 25 mins before someone came to take drinks order. When I enquired as to why it had taken so long, the very young staff member advised there had been an issue with the till...interestingly we witnessed people going to the bar and getting served, so where the till issue eminates from I'm not sure but I did advise staff they could have at least made it known to customers if there was an issue. Anyway, we then waited a further 15 minutes before someone took our food order. Thankfully the food was of good standards. There is a clear disconnect of customer service in our experience and the manager didn't do anything to direct staff or manage customers and this is part of the problem. Young and inexperienced staff need direction and coaching and there is none of this in our opinion at this pub/restaurant. There is no ambience, no candles lit, background music that is barely audible and definatley a lack of customer service and direction. Shame really, as this pub used to be great. I don't blame the young staff and management should in my opinion need to refresh themselves on what customer service and the restaurant/pub experience should be about. As I mentioned, the food was fine. Won't be revisiting anytime soon unfortunately.

Arrived in the carpark which had ample parking on this Sunday night and walked into a clean and bright restaurant. Seated within a minute and drinks order after 5 minutes which promptly came out. We settled by the window with a lovely view to the co-op over the high street. Restaurant ambience was nice, fairly full and the children in tonight were very well behaved. The temperature was a little cooler than I’d have liked though but I prefer this to too warm. I’ve not given 5 stars as the next 27 minutes waiting for our waitress to take our order was slightly frustrating. When we finally placed our order we were too apprehensive to order starters for fear of being there too long so ordered the 35 day dry aged sirloin and the butternut squash tagine mains only. As the waitress read it back it seemed she was mocking our pronunciation of tagine and corrected us to “Terrine”. We let is slide but found it quite weird as it was definitely a tagine on the menu as you can see from the photos. Anyway, we were happy our order was taken but it was getting obvious many tables around us had no food on them so we were getting more worried. Good did start coming out slowly and I’m please to say it did all look very good. After 53 minutes of seating, to our relief, our food came out. We were honestly thinking of cancelling the order had it hit the hour mark, the restaurant was not full, just nicely busy. However, the food was absolutely beautiful and I highly recommend the place if you can overlook the time spent waiting. Maybe we were just too hungry to appreciate the wait but in the end it was certainly worth it.

We have see to visit the Millstone almost weekly, as a family, with out friends and even business clients. Quality used to be amazing but unfortunately something changed over the last 5-6 months and after giving few more chances…we had to give up. The meat used to be of excellent quality but recently we had burgers and steak, both of mediocre taste and standards. Even the fries and chips, were far from the crunchy lovely style they used to. The fishmonger plate to share, used to be one of the masterpiece…last time was mainly filed with fish and chips chunks. Such a disappointment Last but not least the service also worsted: several missing plates were not told from the beginning, leading to a 10 minutes back and forward to understand what was available indeed. The new staff doesn’t really know the plates on the menu and any questions would put them in crisis. This has never been the case over the last 3 years so definitely something changed in the management of what was a great elegant and fine place for dining.

A very pleasant Christmas Lunch this afternoon at The Millstone, Penyffordd. A good choice on the menu; very good quality food served by pleasant staff. Eating out is an expensive item these days. The Millstone is of a high standard, pleasant staff, spotlessly clean, and a warm, comfortable restaurant to sit in. It’s a pleasant, small venue, and the standards are so much better in many areas than some large venues catering for volume. I would certainly recommend the Millstone. Our group of four all enjoyed their meals. The two young members of staff on duty were very pleasant and welcoming. Thank you.

I have to confess that my expectation of a restaurant in Penyffordd wasn't high, and I hoped that the name 'The Millstone' was of historical significance rather than indicating a heavy burden. I was not pleasantly surprised ... I was wonderfully inpressed! The menu offered a tantalising range that made it hard to choose - always a good sign! I chose the Duck. It was fantastic! Beautifully presented, cooked to perfection, and tasted delicious. The place was busy, the atmosphere buzzing and the service good. What's more to say? Thoroughly recommended.

We have eaten here so many times since it opened as a restaurant and can say we have only had minor disappointments a couple of times. In last couple of years we have had no disappointments with the quality and quantity of the food. Hot food arrives on hot plates, something that didn’t happen last week when we went to a restaurant for Sunday lunch that had won national recognition and has a famous chef and whose prices are high. We were told to make our orders soon after arriving as there was a very large party arriving soon after us and that service could be affected once that party ordered. We placed our orders about 10 minutes after arriving. Our starters came within a short period of time afterwards. The portions were good and the food tasty especially the one with goats cheese- we’d definitely have that again. Our beef roast and our friend’s chicken were excellent but like one reviewer in a previous review said, some vegetables were perhaps a little too al dente but still edible. We don’t often have a dessert as 2 courses are usually sufficient for us but our friend wanted one so we ordered as well. I had the pannacota with mango sorbet, honeycomb and passion fruit. This was delicious and one of the tastiest desserts I have had in a long time even compared to those I have had in more expensive and award winning restaurants. Hope they keep this on the menu. Our friend was really impressed and said he would come again. Like many in the hospitality business staffing is always a problem but even when they have been short of staff in the past our wait for food has never been a big issue. Well done the Millstone.

TERRIBLE SERVICE 0* Fion (young, blonde server - if that even is her name) was so bad!! Do not come here!! I’m allergic to raw red onion. Wasn’t asked about any allergies when we were seated. Ordered the starter that didn’t say anything about red onion, when it came, full of red onion. Told the waitress when she collected our dishes that I was allergic and she stared at me and removed our plates - no apology or anything. Brought our mains £18 each, average at best. No one offers us any sauces, said thank you or please. Really rude staff, incompetent and unapologetic. Would LOVE a mystery shopper to go to this shambles of an establishment. When they brought us the bill, they had the cheek to charge us for the starter, I said that I thought it was cheeky to charge us for the starter given that I was allergic to it. She said she’d check with the manager and brought us an amended bill, through the card machine in front of my partner and said nothing. She was so rude and had absolutely no customer service skills whatsoever. The manager was just as bad. Absolute shambles of a place. Couldn’t pay me to come back

Came here for my mum’s birthday. Both my parents chose the roast beef and were very pleased with it. I had the veggie roast, portobello mushroom stuffed with goat cheese and topped with lemon crumb. Mushroom was tasty. I had the gluten free option which just meant less food for the same money - no Yorkshire pudding, no cheese sauce on the cauliflower, the kind of thing that gluten free option means. Service was good. Would be useful if the accessible entrance was clearly signposted in the car park so my elderly parents didn’t have to try to climb the steps into the front entrance.

We were travelling from Chester to north Wales and wanted somewhere to stop off and have a pleasant meal. The reviews were generally good so we diverted off the main road and came here, arriving at about 4.30 in the afternoon, after checking that they would be serving food at that time of day. I went to the bar and picked up a menu which I looked through while our drinks were being poured. I asked if we could open a tab but was told they don't allow tabs for outside diners - quite understandable. So I paid for the drinks and took them and the menu outside. I returned to the bar to order the food but there was nobody there. After waiting about 5 minutes someone who looked like a waitress wandered past and asked me if I wanted anything. I said I wanted to order food but was told that they have stopped serving food outside because they were too busy, even though there were hardly any customers there. I went back outside to pass on the message and there was another waitress there. I asked her if we could order food but the response was the same. I asked if we could eat inside instead but the answer was 'Only if you've booked'. She explained that they were expecting 2 large parties to arrive so they had stopped serving meals to everyone else. I can understand that if they are disorganised in the kitchen, or don't have enough staff this could be a valid reason to stop serving but failing to tell someone who was seen to be looking at a menu and asking about opening a tab, then still serving them drinks without saying anything is pretty poor customer service. When we left about 20 minutes later none of the large parties had even arrived but after searching on our phones we went round the corner to the Red Lion where we had an excellent meal without any nonsense, so it'll be the Red Lion for us from now on.

I've wanted to try the Millstone for some time for Sunday lunch, previously always booked up. Managed to get a booking via Open Table to treat my parents for their Anniversary, this was noted on the booking but not sure why as nothing was acknowledged? 2 x Roast Beef, Burger for my partner and a fish pie were ordered. Sadly although on first appearance, the meals looked great except for the very small fish pie with a small amount of veg, at the price I would have expected a little more. The Roasts were just very uninspiring, just sadly not a lot of flavour and vegetables perhaps a little too 'al dente' , very difficult to cut. Sadly again with the Burger, very much lacking in taste. We decided not to opt for deserts. The restaurant itself is very pleasant, lovely decor but for me lacking warmth and personality. The 2 waitresses we dealt with were lovely... wasn't too sure on the initial welcome. First impressions count for me and sadly as much as I really was hoping this could be a new favourite, unfortunately... not to be.

We decided last minute to eat out al fresco as the weather was lovely and for a change I had a few days off, after much searching we decided on this place as my parents were regulars a few years back. Unfortunately in the interim the service has fallen off a cliff and someone has decided to sell the land next door and build a supermarket. I overheard a person who we presumed was local saying the pub had actually sold off the land to the Co-op and if so what a mistake. At this point we should have walked however we decided to stay and endure the roller coaster, firstly after ten minutes a waitress came for the drinks order and asked if we wanted menus. Another ten minutes went by when the menus appeared but no drinks, after approx. 20 minutes after seating they turned up. The meals were ordered with the starters being nice ( goats cheese and a fishmongers platter ) however we had now been sat over one and a half hours. Then the mains came with a burger that was thick yet tasteless, a steak sandwich that was dry and a pulled pork mac n cheese that was stone cold. This was not just warm or tepid but nearly as cold as my beer. The other two in our party struggled on however mine went back and they attempted to bring it out again after being in the micro.i know places are struggling after the lockdown etc. but believe me there was absolutely no excuse for the poor service and condition of the food. Just to rub salt in the wounds half of the table sat beside us decided it was fine to buy sandwiches etc. from the Co-op and eat them at the table and the waitress never said a dicky bird.We eventually left two and a half hours after arriving having had only two courses and the place wasn't even 20% full. During our stay there must have been in excess of 200 cars using the supermarket and having a damn good nose what everyone was eating.

We were looking for somewhere to eat (before Wales went back into lockdown) and found this beautyThe food was just amazing, tasty and presented as you would in a fine dining restaurant but price and portion size that of a normal pubWe shall be returning (as soon as we can)

Love this place. Which is handy as its so local. Staff, food, drink all fantastic. They, like many, have been hampered by Drakeford and his power trip, but have responded superbly. The takeaway food is stunning, especially the sunday roast.Wow!!

Fabulous food and fabulous service today at this lovely restaurant. Had the most wonderful food here today in spite of no drinks thanks to the welsh government we still thought we’d support a local business ! Thanks for working so hard In a extremely hard time for restaurants the food speaks volumes. Take a run out to this restaurant you won’t be disappointed.

Impressed with the menu especially as there were a couple of non meat eating participants. The food was tip top. The staff were friendly and attentive. Would recommend a visit before any other establishment in the area!

Wish I had known how good the food was here years ago. The food is extremely good and beautifully presented and all for a reasonable price.Goats cheese starter was so pretty and really delivered on flavour, the roasted garlic jam was devine. I was disappointed to find they had ran out of ribeye but ordered a sirloin and didn't regret it. Service lacked a little in in comparison, asked to 'pass my plate' which I don't mind when followed with a please. With such a lovely ambience it's a shame the service didn't come with the same warmth. However, we will definitely be back. Best food I have had all year.

Second visit to The Millstone. We wanted to eat out before the circuit break and we had to eat local so came back here. The restaurant was busy, the tables well spaced out. We had sausages and halloumi to start which were very good then fish and chips and the chicken, followed by the Waffle which we shared. Everything was delicious, well presented and just the right amount to eat three courses. Our waitress was friendly efficient and helpful. It’s a good local restaurant and deserves to survive so we will return as soon as we can.

Very impressed with the Millstone. We had been for a christening but not to eat out. So we booked for our anniversary. Staff and arrangements good with social distancing. We had to get the water off the tray ourselves etc. Food excellent. Lots of different tastes on the plate. £60.00 for two with shared starter of pate with extra excellent breads two mains 3 pints IPA. My duck perfectly cooked truffle chips amazing. Husband loved his lemon chicken with peppers feta and yoghurt. The attention to detail was good. Excellent fresh leaves with the pate beautifully dressed. Our waitresses were warm welcoming and funny. Well done chefs. We will be back!!

Another visit to The Millstone post lockdown. Booked for a milestone birthday for a party of 19 following guidelines of dining indoors. Our party was catered for in style following social distancing rules and family bubbles. Sarah carefully organised everything to our satisfaction prior to the night. Food and service on the night were as always first class, and everyone felt safe and enjoyed their evening. Sarah was on hand throughout the evening to ensure everything ran smoothly and seamlessly. Highly recommend if you have a family celebration - just perfect.

Had today's special of lambs liver beautifully presented with so many tasty accompanying veg ingredients . My friend had the fish platter which is normally a starter for two but ate as a main dish which she loved too . The two girls serving today were very helpful and engaging so overall a five experience . Hadn't been for over a year and glad we decided to try the Millstone again . Will surely be back much sooner .....

Came for a family meal, expected a cosy evening ended up sat in main room opposite the conservatory next to a fire which was only there for show, room was cold, nearly all sat with coats on. Food was average nothing to write home about. Service wasn’t inspiring, waitress wasn’t knowledgeable. Wife always wanted to go there to eat , I didn’t. Won’t be returning, sorry.

We booked this venue for our parents Wedding Anniversary, there is a set menu to order from and with larger bookings the owner asks for the food order to be placed prior to arrival. The menu is quite fancy so if you are a fussy eater it’s worth checking before you visit. The staff were fantastic on the evening of the party and all the food was prepared and cooked very well. The biggest negative is the cost of corkage for a pub in a village nowhere near a busy town/city, this was £15 per bottle. The evening went well and everyone enjoyed the evening.

We’ve eaten here on many occasions over the last two years and each time was faultless. Each time we visit, every diner has given great reviews on each course. Great value for money, tasty, well cooked food. Also just discovered their Sunday roast, which is also the best around and much more reasonable than most other restaurants of its kind. The Tuesday meal deal, 3 courses and a drink for £25 is not to be missed.

Had a great meal at the Millstone and will certainly be returning. We were seated in the restaurant area and provided the 'specials' menu and main menu. The main menu had a good choice of meals and the special had 2 starters and main. Everything was very prompt and the meals were perfect. I ordered Ribeye Steak which was cooked to perfection. I felt the desserts were slightly limited, but none the less, what was on there look very appetising (unfortunately i did decide to skip this course). The prices reflected the quality of the meals and felt this is something the millstone got spot on. Would certainly recommend a visit of you are passing!

Came here as a party of three. Table was pre-booked so all ok for availability. Good customer service from the start to the end of the meal. I found the food menu to be a little limited but the food we did have was very good if a little on the small portion side. I found the venue to have a relaxed atmosphere which is always a plus. The manager / owner who served us was very polite and gave superb service (even when we thought we had been overcharged.......we hadn't! Ha ha. My apologies once again). Plenty of parking available. Would i come here again, yes, definitely.

We went on a Saturday night. Very disappointed with the prices for some of the dishes. My burger was fine but the rest portions just too small. Option to add chips etc but at a charge The service was very slow. The staff were very pleasant however I won't be returning again. Its a popular venue and full. Maybe suit me better for a lunch time.

Went with a group of 4 adults for a family birthday. Absolutely brilliant. This place has changed hands over the years but the current staff are doing an excellent job. Full, and varied, menu to suit all tastes. (Quite large portions so no room for dessert!) Really good value for money, lots of people there but tables are not too close together, waiting staff were attentive but not intrusive. Thoroughly enjoyable evening and the food was fabulous.

Five of us visited the Millstone for dinner on the 7th of December. We were shown to our table and then promptly served drinks by a very friendly and polite young lady who's name has slipped my mind unfortunately. We ordered a selection of different appetisers to share and we were very impressed with the quality of them. For our mains, four of us had steak and one ordered the gourmet burger and again the quality was excellent and the portion sizes spot on. Following on I had a liqueur coffee and the others ordered desserts. Once again everything was delicious, the bill came to £188 for the five of us which included two rounds of drinks that included beer, wine and gin. All in all an excellent experience in very nice surroundings with top class service. In the words of the bard "I'll be back".

This was our first visit and we had a very pleasant evening. One of our group has dietary requirements (gluten and dairy free). The staff were very attentive and helpful, checking the dishes chosen were suitable and safe. The food was delicious, cooked perfectly and presented beautifully. Excellent service. We will definitely go back there.

Booked a table for 16 people 2 weeks in advance for Sunday lunch for our dads 60th birthday, having been here several times for family gatherings or as a couple for meals it was our first choice as food and service has always been great.service from the waitress this time was terrible she was quite frankly rude and we were made to feel unwanted the minute we were seated.having just taken our seats same asked us what did we want to order from the Sunday roast menu,I explained we were going to order drinks first and then we would be ready to order ,her reply we have these tables booked out after you! My mum immediately wanted to leave but not wanting to ruin dad’s meal as family had traveled from Manchester we stayed. Food came to the table quickly and disappointing, everyone’s Yorkshire puddings were burnt and hard we had a spoonful of instant mash and for the price small portions , the server was miserable and standoffish and unlike past reservations wasn’t very welcoming towards us , will not be coming back unfortunately everyone in our party wanted to complain but we didn’t for dads sake

I love this pub. The girls are all lovely, polite and friendly, striking the right balance of moving the service along, but never feeling rushed. The food last night was amazing! I went for the BBQ pulled pork Loaded Fries and it did not disappoint! On ordering, I felt the simple dish seemed expensive, being around the £18 mark, but on eating it it felt worth every penny 😋
