This restaurant located inside the National Theatre enjoys a pole position for those wanting an extremely convenient place to eat either at pre or post productions at the theatre. The room itself is pleasant enough with some tables enjoying views across the Thames. Unfortunately despite the menu looking ok what appears on the table is bland and pretty tasteless. The service while friendly enough is totally amateurish. Think 6th formers on a work placement. Willing but somewhat clueless. This is a totally lost opportunity as they have hundreds of potential diners from those attending a play. We are regular patrons of the National but having dined here once we can't imagine wanting to do so again unless very radical changes are made. Incidentally matters are not helped by the fact that it is expensive for what it is.

This restaurant is in The National Theatre building. It has a bright, lively ambiance. We've been there many times before seeing a play and it's very convenient.Last night marked a change of experience. The fixed price for 2 courses has gone. "Everything is now a la carte", replied our server with no further explanation. The bottom-line is, the cost is higher.Christine's starter of kidney salad was not good. She pointed out to the server that some of the kidneys were so under-cooked that they were inedible. "I'll tell the chef" was the server's reply, but there was no further feedback, no apology and, most important, no offer to take it off the bill! My starter was a boring smoked salmon dish advertised on the menu as fresh salmon.I had the lamb steak main. The thick cut chips on the menu were not available. A big hunk of meat came with a a big half tomato and a bowl of thin fries. Unimaginative and tough! Christine's main was cheese souffle, which was ok.The service, for which there's an automatic 12.5% charge added, was poor. We had to ask several times for bread. However, the bill came promptly with the coffees. The coffees were very good - actually the best part of the meal! Cost was high and not good value. It's a pity because it used to be a great place!!

As regular visitors to the National we used the Mezzanine for pre theatre dining over many years, until frankly we got bored with the menu and decided to eat at one of the many alternative establishments on the 'Southbank'. The 'Mezzanine' offers the great advantage of being in the National building so that you can eat and relax in comfort prior to the performance, irrespective of the outside environment. Having read a number of very positive recent reviews we decided to try it again on a couple of recent visits to the theatre. The service was very efficient and friendly, giving plenty of time for a three course meal and coffee prior to the performance. As for the food it was ok without being outstanding. My crab starter was nice as were the scallops that followed as the main course, which were accompanied by a nice bottle of Australian Sauvignon. In summary it is a restaurant within the theatre, which makes it very convenient. However the food is average and would not encourage us to visit the restaurant for itself. There are better dining oportunities within the area.

Obviously they specialise in pre/post theatre diners and they do it really well. Unlike many pre-theatre restaurants, however, they offer a full menu and still pull this off with panache and great service. And that gives you the clue to their success - very pleasant people providing good service backed up by some really good food. Fine dining? Not quite, but very good nonetheless. Hard to think of anywhere better when going to The National.

When booking try to get a seat in the front area of this restaurant for a splendid view of the River Thames. The service is pretty good and is performed by pleasant young people. Although I have greatly enjoyed my previous meals at this venue, on my last visit the kitchen staff had '' taken your eye of the ball''. My Roquefort soufflé had not risen and my duck confit lacked the customary crispness of the duck skin. Nevertheless when this was pointed out the dish was taken back to the kitchen and the problem was righted. I will continue to be a customer.

We have tried many different places to eat when visiting the Southbank but none have been as consistently good as the Mezzanine. In the National Theatre building and overlooking the Thames it is ideal for dining before or after a performance. We love the atmosphere and the polite attention from the staff, who are friendly but never over familiar. It is not fine dining but the modern British menu changes enough for regular visits and the quality is superior to anything in the area. We've always enjoyed the food but find the flavours of cold starters are sometimes a little spoilt by being too cold.

We have been dining at the Mezzanine in the National Theatre for many years. It is by far the most convenient dining option for theatre patrons before or after a performance. They are very practiced at meeting curtains for their customers before matinees or evening performances at up to three theatres at once. But the ambience is also sufficiently relaxing for diners after a performance. Given this priority, the food is surprising good and reasonable value. My experience of the steaks is that they are not as good as advertised (Buccleuch Estate), but the menu choice is very good. Just make certain to ask for all sauces on the side because they tend to be very strong and smother the natural taste of the food (even poured all over the pineapple ring on top of the roast pork chop, and preventing the duck confit from being crisp on the outside). Some tables have good views of the Thames and the South Bank promenade, but most are well inside the concrete building. Still, I have tried many nearby restaurants over the years and some, like RSJ, are quite good; but you can't beat the convenience of the Mezzanine combined with the reasonable quality of the food and atmosphere. The serving staff are obliging and youthfully charming at all times. Front of house is very well managed. The kitchen could use a little more care and taste in preparation. They do try when asked by the obliging staff, but it is a matter of culinary training that needs to be considered. They also have to work under the pressure of most meals being prepared in time for curtain-up!

We have eaten there many, many times before NT plays and rarely been disappointed. This week was especially good with a wonderful game Wellington starter and very well cooked (I like it very rare) ribeye steak. The two vegetarian courses chosen by my wife were also very good. We decided against desserts, opted for coffees, included a glass of wine and total bill of less than £70, we felt was excellent value.

One of several visits to Mezzanine. Lunch time Sunday for matinee of Othello which is a sell out. Restaurant very busy and we were told they had been ''taken by surprise" by the number if non-prebooked walk ups. So surprised the bread ran out! Very slow service with table staff frustrated by the slowness of the kitchen which "had stopped" at one point we were told. It's OK if you have an early booking (ours was 12 noon) and the show doesn't start till 2pm but frustrating for customers as well as staff. Food was pleasant but not memorable.

We eat here whenever we visit the National Theatre as the restaurant is set in the National theatre building so the staff will always make sure you have finished your meal before the performance. It's ideal for those who don't want to just have a snack before the performance. The food is generally of very good quality with a seasonally changing menu, recently the chicken dishes have been particularly good.Three things may enhance your enjoyment:1. Always book well ahead, this restaurant is always full before the performance.2. Ask for a table at the 'quiet' end of the restaurant or overlooking the river when booking. Often the music played in the foyer can be too loud for diners at that end of the restaurant.3. If parking in the underground carpark below the theatre - pay for your ticket when you leave the car (it's a standard price in the evening) rather than after the show as you won't have to queue.

We've eaten here in the past prior to the theatre and the food has been good, but this week our meal was very disappointing. We decided not to have a starter and both chose the roasted sole as the main course. The fish was ok, though not especially fresh, but my salad of pear and Treviso was very poor - a few slices of hard, unripe pear and a couple of Chioggia radicchio leaves. My companion chose chips because they have been good in the past but this time they were a disappointment. For desert I chose the Christmas pudding - this was a small round piece of totally flavourless stodge, the kind of thing that might be dished out at school dinners or in a hospital except the portion would be bigger. How can a restaurant go so wrong with Christmas pudding - with neither flavour nor texture? My companion's dessert of red wine poached pear was so hard, she had to resort to picking it up with her fingers to eat it as it couldn't be cut with a spoon and fork!

However at least after a play you won't be waiting around to eat for hours! There is a good menu that changes every few weeks. Food is reliable although as it is designed to be quick I feel that fish dishes often come overcooked so I favour the meat dishes. The food is pretty decent - although a bit variable in quality - and there's a good wine list which is not too expensive. Service is very quick. On this visit, we had two good starters - home cured salmon and gazpacho - and two variable mains - scallops were good, while the pork belly was a bit fatty and came with way too much mash. This restaurant is located at the South Bank, in the National theatre complex. there are a number of eating options in the National theatre and this one is the National's 'white table cloth' fine dining option. I enjoyed the started and pudding. I had a steak for a main course which was bot a little on the tough side and also under cooked vs what I had orders. My wife had selected a different type of steak, which she said was fine, so maybe I was just unlucky. My starter, an omelette thermidor was excellent. The cost was £99 for two people, three courses with a medium priced bottle of wine and no other drinks or coffees. This is an interior restaurant, by which I mean that there are no views of the river, unlike other nearby restaurants e.g. the OXO tower or the restaurant in the Festival Hall.I would chose this restaurant if I was not seeing a play at the National, but if you are, it's very convenient to eat here. Mrs CW and I had an hour between performances at the National, and Mezzanine was the ideal solution. We ordered when we booked before the first performance and, if we had wanted, would have had more than enough time for three courses rather than the two we took. The service cannot be faulted. The location, in the heart of the National Theatre complex, is fine, and the surroundings are pleasant, though some of the furnishings are (as are others at the National) beginning to show signs of wear and age.The meal, though, was not cheap and, for what it was, was not especailly good value. There was nothing wrong with the food from the set menu, but the choice was limited and the food was rather bland - baked cod or coq au vin for the main course. We would eat here again if constrained by time, but otherwise would prefer to find somewhere offering better value.

I went to Mezzanine before seeing a show at NT with friends. The staff were very accommodating since we did not all arrive at the same time, and shown the members of our group to the table without fuss when they did turn up. They were happy for some of us to have a second starter instead of a main course, to enable us to have a pudding. There are announcements in good time for the start of shows, which is helpful and deals with the anxiety that you might miss the start of the play you came all the way to see in the first place. The quality of the ingredients was good, the cookiing and preparation very good. I would say that the staff, although busy, could have made more of an effort to have cleared away all of our empty plates sooner. However that is a small complaint which did not take away from our enjoyment. Although only one of our party took wine, and the others had fruit juice, the meal for 4 cost us £111. Not bad at all, since we could have gone to some dodgy Covent Garden/Theatreland restaurant and had an inferior meal for much more money.

Brash music (caught in crossfire between different kitchen and front music, expensive, and not very fresh. Disappointing ‘crabstick claw’ starter, v ordinary whitebait and uninspiring mixed seafood grill for two. Expensive for what it was.
