Place is doomed. Pub, Italian restaurant and now an Indian restaurant. Would like to see it do well but statistically... I'm out

The rooms at Merry Monk are lovely but the service leaves a lot to be desired. There was a mix up in allocation of room resulting in suitcase being put into the hallway!! I am confused as to reviews about breakfasts as they are NOT included in this establishment. In fact I had nowhere to go and eat on Christmas morning!! No hairdryer, even though it is stated that one is in the room. Had to check out with wet hair. Never met one member of staff throughout 3 day stay. Tea and coffee in room but no milk. The self check in and out outside the front door is not desirable and I felt very vulnerable when finding it difficult to access key press. Creaky communal doors on landing during the night was a problem and needs addressing. Black seal around base of shower screen black. Not a place I would return to sadly.

A nice clean room with modern decorative features. A freshly cooked breakfast each morning to start the day (good quality ingredients). The accommodation its self is well maintained to the point of being spotless. I would like to see a notice in the room to notify guest what the WiFi code is. Plus when breakfast starts/finish. I regularly stay within Rutland ect.places such as the whipper Inn, the horn blower, the Crown Stamford and the list goes on but I can definitely say that the merry monk in the lead by a long shot.. for a nice stay and a competitive prise look no further.

We stayed here on 8th August 2019. This is a beautiful old building and has an amazing oak staircase to access the rooms. There is a lift also for people with mobility problems. The room was immaculate and very comfortable. Breakfast superb and all staff courteous and helpful. I inadvertently left my Kindle in the room. I rang to see if it could be sent to me as we live in Northumberland. I was quite happy to pay postage. The lovely young lady I spoke to said they would just send it back to me. It has arrived safe and sound and I'm delighted. Its refreshing in this day and age to have such lovely service. I wish we had been able to spend more time there. Oakham is delightful. Thank you Merry Monk.

AWFUL. DANGEROUS. This hotel does not have a reception and they do not answer emergency phones. They literally left me sleeping on the street. My electronic key was programmed incorrectly and I could not access the hotel. It was Sunday night and everything was closed in the town, I experienced a truly stressful situation. I RECOMMEND NOT TO STAY HERE

Great bar, great decor ... however having one till and a busy venue is shockingly rubbish when you have to wait 30 minutes to get a round of drinks. Apart from that a nice place to go. Just dont go on event nights if you dont want to wait 30 minutes for a round.

Called in a couple of weeks ago and we decided to have the soup of the day. Waited half hour and asked where was our order, terribly sorry the chef hadn't turned up so the commis was sorting out , apology accepted, soup was delicious. Today after waiting a good half hour, only two others in there, our lunch arrived.....wrong order....should have been smoked salmon with salad, we got halloumi. Sorry but we walked out as we had run out of time. Salad and smoked salmon isn't rocket science. Get things sorted.......Could be in your favour!!!

The Merry Monk opens again after a complete refurbishment on Friday 2 May 2019. It promises to be a great destination serving breakfast, light lunches and evening fine dining. It also has beautiful rooms for overnight stays. This is definitely going to be a real attraction for Oakham Town Centre.

Went here for a family meal, to say that this cost 5 of us over £400 there were various items that were very disappointing that I feel I must mention. £18 for a single scallop starter in some flavoured cream foam seemed excessive. One person's slow cooked short rib was tough and flavourless masked by toppings, one person's pork ribeye was chewy and dry with a side of extremely dry roasted new potatoes, squid ink pasta fish dish served with an odd green sauce and raw carrot ribbon and the pasta was dry and didn't taste of much, barely any vegetables on any of the dishes, and to top it off waitress tried to put red wine jus sauce onto husband's beef rib after he said SEVERAL times he didn't want it as does not like anything with alcohol in it (yes even if cooked off!) and she didn't seem to want to take no thankyou for an answer. Also his mash provided in a tall sided small bowl with no spoon to get it out with?! Poached pear pudding also disappointing pears were pretty much raw and very hard-so much so that we had to ask for knives for them that were slammed down on the table. Didn't make a fuss about all the lacklustre meals as mothers 70th birthday meal but overall very much style over substance and not worth the price tag. Tables very close together and had people constantly kicking my chair legs as they squeezed past me. Car park and entrance very dark and slippy in places with uneven surfaces

The Wheatsheaf in Oakham is a traditional pub with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Dan and his team always go the extra mile to make you feel at home. They have a great selection of real ales, including guest ales that change regularly, as well as a menu of fresh, home-cooked food. Whether you're stopping by for a pint or a bite to eat, The Wheatsheaf is a great choice.
