Great value for money..really enjoyed the food & fast service too.Bar & serving staff were pleasant & seemed happy to be at work.

Banging breakfast, brilliant staff and goodprices. Would definitely recommend and will be the only place i go for breakfast from now on

Staff couldn’t do enough to make our visit special… the food was all out on time and hot also it was reasonably priced with the burger meal we got our soft drinks included..such a friendly atmosphere..

To feel threatened in this pub by a drunk regular was not particularly nice. When trying to enjoy the quiz he was disruptive loud and threatening. The staff were laughing along with him and he was behind the bar with them, clearly they are friends with him. I have written a complaint to stonegate but as they haven't responded in 2 weeks I'm assuming this kind of behaviour is acceptable. One particular member of staff then proceeded to come and be argumentative with a group of older ladies who had felt unsafe as she stated he didn't do anything wrong. Not a great end to a usually good and enjoyable night.

Went for a family birthday meal, table of 11. The food was lovely, cake out really quickly. Had some picky children but all orders were correct, and the team couldn't do enough for us. Will definitely return

We had our Christmas Day dinner here. Never been to the place before. A relative booked it. Was really impressed. The staff were very attentive, table nicely laid out, and we couldn’t fault the food. They catered for our 2 disabled relatives in wheelchairs. Would go again anytime. Thank you for making Christmas Day special.

After making a booking online for 6 people at 13:00hrs on the 29/12/2023 to get confirmation via email. To arrive at The Merchant to see no available tables and not one reserved. To then be told by a member of staff " oh we check the bookings at 08:30 and we don't check them after that " . When asking us what time we booked this , of which we informed her it was at 10:00 for the reply to be that's why we don't check bookings after 08:30. Then to be told if we can find a table we are welcome to sit there. What is the point of using the booking app and having confirmation if the venue is not going to check . Will be very reluctant to book here again ....not a very good experience.

Quiz night is fun, had good vibes, can have a good laugh. The quiz keeps you on your toes answering questions quickly. Highly recommend!

We come here regularly for quiz night and have a meal beforehand. Have occasionally popped in for lunch as well. Food really good, prices are reasonable and staff are really friendly. However, busier times often mean some items on the menu are unavailable and expect to wait 30-60 minutes for food. Still a good place to eat and fantastic quiz nights

Very disappointed went Thursday 3rd of August sat at table 3. Let’s begin. ,, no katsu chicken. Then no lasagne. So we ordered 10oz gammon meat off discoloured chips aired egg hard not runny. , steak&ale pie pastry couldn’t cut even with steak knife again chips aired , fish batter hard mushy peas dry. , sausage burned on chips plate hard again chips aired Overall terrible food been going here for years never experienced this , have they changed ownership or had new cook that can’t cook even waited for child’s desert 27 minutes after asking for it ice cream and chocolate sauce isn’t rocket science paid £58 for food and when complained lady said I can only refund for two meals of £17. Not happy we all came out very disappointed and hungry as didn’t eat all of food

From somewhere you would recommend to anyone to terrible. The breakfasts here were the best in the area sadly not the case now so we stopped going there for breakfast. We were out on Sunday for lunch and went in here the meal was £11.49 each, it was the worst Sunday lunch I've ever seen, the roast potatoes were so hard my wife couldn't cut through them, the stuffing was cremated on one side, this side was presented face down in an attempt to hide the poor skills of the person cooking it. I complained and they offered to replace the overcooked items which I declined. They gave us a refund.This place as gone from excellent to a place to avoid, such a shame.

A very nasty atmosphere here my Chinese ethnicity friend was picked out for being underage when he is clearly 30 and has a beard. Management were abrasive towards him and we were made to feel unwelcome by the regulars at the quiz night.

On 18/05/23 myself, my partner and a couple of friends had gone to the pub quiz which is on there every Thursday, the quiz as usual was good fun and enjoyable, however the service we recieved from one manageress was abhorrent considering the day and age we live in. One of our group of friends is of Chinese origin and was quite clearly the only non white person in the whole pub, he was singled out by the manageress for 'looking underage'. (He has a full beard and is approaching 30 years of age). Once our friend returned from having bought his ID in (which cost him a taxi journey) he proceeded to show his ID to said manageress to which he got a dismissive sigh and a roll of the eyes. The atmosphere in the whole pub had racist undertones and this was only encouraged by the actions of management. I have never in my 28 years of living in Cannock experienced this level of discrimination and I feel like this needs to be highlighted, there was very clearly no need for my friend to be ID'd (he is the eldest member of my group of friends) and it felt like a thinly veiled attempt at removing my non-white friend from the restaurant. I am very happy to discuss this further and support you in any way I can to improve the atmosphere of a once really inclusive venue.

I have visited this place for breakfast many times over the last 2 years, and it’s always been a good experience, sadly on the past few occasions it has fallen short. The breakfast is usually of a good wuybut lately the quality has gone down, decent sausages replaced by very cheap tasting sausages, and the bacon was like rubber, mushrooms were very shrivelled and dry, and tomato was a very cheap salad variety ( barely any taste ) also the flipped eggs were overdone and dry. I’m afraid if things don’t improve, I will be forced to find somewhere else to have breakfast.

Have visited this pub several times in the last few weeks while conducting business in Cannock, and were previously satisfied with both the service and the price. But not today. Firstly a new price increased menu had been issued since our previous visit last week, adding around £1 on average, to every meal. On ordering fish and chips for my meal and asking to swap the peas it came with for baked beans, my companion was told it would be £0.99 extra for a portion of beans. He said “They are *instead* of peas not as an extra, so why should they be charged for?” The barmaid went to the kitchen to enquire and came back and said the charge still stood. As I pointed out to her when she brought the food, since beans are already on the go as they serve them with the all day breakfast, why should there be a charge for swapping one item for another? It wasn’t like I was asking for something that had to be opened, or prepared especially. She agreed with me but said there was nothing she could do. In this post covid age and with the current cost of living crisis you would think businesses would be doing all they can to encourage people to visit their establishments, not ripping them off for every little thing. Even my splash of blackcurrant in my drink was charged extra. This pub is a lot quieter than it used to be. If this is how they do business I’m not surprised. Even in my local Beefeater pub they are always happy to swap items on your meal for no extra charge. Our two meals today, which cost a total of £13 last week, today cost £19, and they were only ‘average’ in quality. The £0.99 baked beans were pretty runny and my chips were pretty hard and my companion's chicken meal he described as just "OK. I've had better." Don’t think we’ll be going back any time soon.

We booked a table explaining one was allergic to meat and fish. When it came to no one could answer my questions as to if the food was vegetarian or vegan the answer is no. Nothing is suitable. Yet the menu says vegetarian and vegan...

If your a vegetarian or vegan don't both they can not guarantee cross contamination. Had to ask for drinks as they decided to serve everyone at the bar first. Even if we had ordered before everyone. Food was not that good just reheated frozen muck....

Staff are always really friendly and helpful. We have had a nice quiet drink here a couple of times.But on this occasion, we did not have a pleasant experience. We went this time to order food before a trip to the theatre. There were at least 4 children, from different families, running around the pub, constantly past our table. 2 children in particular were playing right next to our table, whilst the parents encouraged it. I couldn't concentrate on what I wanted to order from the menu, due to the noise and distraction of running, so I just went with the steak. The wait for food was normal. Both of our meals were really nice. The staff as usual were lovely. However, I was not given a steak knife, but just got on with it. I rushed through my meal as I just wanted to get out of there as quickly as I could. The parents of 2 families had a conversation practically over our table, whilst the kids kept running and playing. The mother then declared her to her child that she needed the toilet. Umm thanks. Then afterwards she took her child to where they were supposed to be sitting- at the OTHER END of the pub. Honestly I wasn't impressed.I'm not sure if it's up to the staff to tell children that they can't be running around, but it's not okay.If I come back again, I'll be sure to only stay if it's not like this time.But usually, it's a nice pub, clean, with nice decor, and nice staff. Would like to try the food again, when I can hopefully enjoy it. :)

Terible service. Waited 50 mins for desserts. Only 4 desserts came out as 6 was ordered. 40 mins later asked where other desserts were after other 4 had been eaten 20 mins earlyer. Only to be told 1and a half hours later that they hadnt got our desserts. We left with 2 people not being served. No appology or refund. Wont be going back again. Discusting service.

Called today for the before midday breakfast. I was cutting it fine, staff member checked the clock. 1 minute to 12. Ordered 2 breakfasts with tea. Requested I breakfast no sausage but double bacon. Although very busy being half term food arrived quite promptly. Both meals had double bacon, never mind a simple mistake or misunderstanding. We've visited The Merchant on various times previously and praised the quality of food notably grilled field mushroom. Everything had been perfect apart from the odd overdone fried egg. Today was a total disgrace. Bacon cold, eggs practically hard boiled and most disappointing, the field mushroom replaced with horrendous tinned rubbish. It all left more than just a bad taste in the mouth.

Me & hubby fancied a pint after a long day shopping so we popped in & had an all day breakfast was lovely at just £5.99 each well worth it. Give it a try xx

I come here quite regularly on my own or with family and every time there is nothing to fault. Sian (think that's the right way to spell it) is wonderful. He customer service is second to none and the locals clearly love her. So refreshing to see such wonderful and accommodating staff here.

I visited this pub at around 2 p.m. in the afternoon when I enter the pub I found a load of tables with dirty plates and glasses left on them as I looked further I saw all food on the floor round tables and not one person cleared any tables or the floor for at least half an hour from when I got there I ordered my food which was pretty average would not go there again I was told by the assistant manager that they had won an award can't think what for.

I’ve been coming here years..... even back in the day when it was Stones. It’s never been amazing in the day, which I understand but it is getting awful!

To be honest, when I saw the low pricing of the breakfast, I thought that it would be pretty average - nothing spectacular. But I was proven wrong. The breakfast at the Merchant is of good quality, tastes delicious and comes out hot which is a bonus. I would recommend this breakfast to anyone.

We had breakfast here for the first time, we didn`t expect much but the food was very hot - always a bonus. The ingredients were good too, I was surprised as it was only £2.99 I think. Service with a smile and very helpful too.We will be back.

I guess the early evening was a quiet time after a bank holiday weekend and, as a result, there was room for tolerance of the liveliness of the two young chidren in our party.

i visited this pub for a meal and it was the worst meal i have had when eating out , if you want to swap garden peas to mushy they charge 79 p only place i have known this ,and i eat out every saurday and most sundays

First time me and my wife have been here we had drinks and food both was very nice pleasant staff and nice atmosphere and a massive menu spoilt for choice I had hunters chicken pie never seen it anywhere before was very nice they have a selection of unusual pies I've not seen before definatly recommend

It's become a regular thing now, meeting family once a week for breakfast at the Merchant. The full English is always brilliant and very good value. The staff are all very friendly, and happy to swap anything you don't like, I always swap the sausage for an extra mushroom, easily the best breakfast in Cannock!

The worst pint's of lager we've ever had, gave them back to the bar staff who looked at us like we'd got two heads. Wasn't offered a replacement or money back so we left. Btw the female toilets looked like a toilet paper party... it was all over the place, dirty place avoid if possible.

Came here as a group for Christmas party, never again. Starters were not a problem, however, the mains, Turkey dinner was appalling, anyone can cook peas, I had no other green veg, pathetic roast potatoes and the Turkey, I would like to have met that Turkey because it was awful. The size of the Christmas pud was no bigger than a postage stamp and we never did receive custard on our table. Never eat there again.

Had our Christmas do here last night, the table was dressed up with a christmas table cloth and crackers which was a lovely touch, we picked off the Christmas menu, we had the soup starter utterly delicious, fudge cake pudding was stunning, however I had the veg tart and my friends he the turkey dinner, it has got to be the worst meal I have ever had and my friends had the same opinion, however the waitress was so lovely and was genuinely concerned we didn't enjoy our meal, and we did a free cocktail as an apology.

We came here for a drink and a meal. Selected what we wanted of the menu, went to the bar to order to be told that two out of the four meals weren't available as they had no steak!. We then Re-looked and the menu went back up to order again to be told that they no longer do that meal!!. Honestly ridiculous. Very disappointing. We then gave up and booked a table in another restaurant.

I really like the Merchant. Its location in town is great. Food is good and during day it is really busy. Such a shame at night it isn't so busy.

I use this place regularly and it has ups and downs. Last week three of came for lunch and none of our orders were available. This evening (Friday) I'm in with my partner for an adult evening and all I am.conscience of is children running around and climbing over the furniture. Perhaps a dividing line should be draen

It amazes me that this place isn't busier whenever my wife and I drop by - the atmosphere is always great, as is the service and there's a terrific selection of drinks available. I can't speak for the food as we're yet to dine at The Merchant, but as a place to unwind with a couple of drinks, it's not at all bad.

Could be a great pub but so many things let it down.the biggest one being the toilets.no loo roll dirty smelly an ordeal to visit them.last week one of the staff members boyfriends threw up in the men's and this was just left! Seems to run by Cannock chase radio members with foul mouths from the skin headed tattooed rough one.lots of people taking in their own food and drink and eat it in front of staff members.tables rarely wiped down and the cloths are not clean.if you run a business take pride in it.its not a social club for staff and the unpaying public of Cannock.

Popped in here with my granddaughter as we were shopping in the town. We found a table but as they were quite busy had to find a member of staff to clear and clean the table the cocktails are to die for and the meal which was something the plank was very nice the waitress was very friendly and very helpful will definitely go back.

Me n my daughter came here for lunch today n decided on the grill n drink. I had the steak n she had the gammon...well what can i say the steak was fatty n dry, they forgot my onion rings n peppercorn sauce which id paid extra for, when it came she gave me a tiny pot half full of cold peppercorn sauce (it wasnt even enough for my steak which in itself was tiny) My daughters gammon was far too salty n the peas were like bullets...only good thing on the plate was the chips. We paid nearly £20 for this awful meal n its safe to say i wont be returning anytime soon!!!!

What a nasty bar manager this place has. We came with our dog, and ordered meals & drinks, then we sat on a bench that was way too low for the table, we felt like we'd shrunk, we moved to another table. (none of which was clean) When the boss saw our dog she came & said no dogs were allowed & we would have to eat outside (where the air was thick with fag smoke). I said that this is a pub where dogs are traditionally allowed & there’s no sign saying no dogs, (I’ve eaten in much nicer pubs when my dog is with me) She said they didn’t need to. I pointed out to her that it would be helpful to put a sign up to avoid situations like this, but she couldn’t care less. These days, as pubs food, if there’s a problem with a dog, there’s a place set aside for them. This pub didn’t have that facility but what annoyed me most was her dreadful attitude.

A late morning brekky treat was had in The Merchant. First visit but wont be the last! We had 2 traditional and 2 large English breakfasts. All were excellent! Food well cooked and served hot. 4 coffees finished the meal. It is a very busy place with a similar format to the Wetherspoons chain.Excellent value meals.

Having been disappointed with our original venue and looking for some midweek inspiration we dropped by The Merchant. Fantastic value and service. Tasty burger with cheese and bacon and a gin n tonic for a bargain £5.79. Highly recommended

Decided to pop in with wife and son for lunch on a snowy day. What a nightmare. Landlady very rude and abrupt. Waitresses very unfriendly and unsociable. Wait time for food longer than 30 mins even though nobody was in. Definitely will not be going back.

Have walked by this pub dozens of times but had never bothered to go in before. The all grey exterior makes it kind of invisible amongst the surrounding buildings and doesn't lure you in, however, seeing on the Menu board outside that it is one of the Stonegate Pub company's Kings Feast pubs and having visited several others that belong to the same chain, we decided to call in for lunch while visiting Cannock.

Ordered a jacket as on a diet & weigh day next day so went healthy well expected to look like in picture but when can was tiny in middle of plate with just a few bean when we complained told not there fault portion size had changed & they get loads of complaints. No excuse if lots complaining then they need to go over to George & Bertie’s to see how they do jacket for the same price. Second time had food & definitely won’t again shame as cocktails are amazing so food let them down.

There was 4 of us on a Saturday night. We really enjoyed our visit to The Merchant for drinks and food. Service was good food served was reasonably price and very well presented.

Popped in for hot chocolate on boxing day....Won't be doing that again. Took ages to arrive and when we got it, it was luke warm and looked rubbish! Tasted cheap n nasty! Don't bother!

Just returned from Christmas lunch at ‘The Merchant’. Absolutely excellent! Fantastic quality food cooked to perfection. After various Christmas lunches around the local area in the past, this was by far the best. Well done to all the staff on making the effort to make this day extra special.
