Attended a work lunch here, the hotel although not the most attractive from the outside is lovely inside. The food is average and the restaurant staff were lovely save one very abrupt and frankly rude misogynistic older gentlemen who was working there who kept on referring to myself and my female work colleagues as “Hey lady” or “excuse me lady”. I didn’t hear him referring to any gentlemen as “Hey man” or “excuse me man”.

I organised a surprise birthday party for my husband with the party planner Sarah Fox who I can highly recommend. She goes above and beyond and her replies are always so quick and helpful. We stayed in The Amarie suite which is lovely and well worth the money, one of the better suites. My mum and 2 friends also stayed over and I do think some of the rooms are in need of a refurbishment, things are looking tired and a little dated. The food was excellent as were the staff all night and at breakfast, everything we asked for they were very accommodating. I would recommend this hotel and I wouldn’t hesitate to go back.

The leek and potato soup we started with was lovely - definitely home made I should think. The fish and chips - well presented and cooked - but why oh why they need to use 'skin on' chips, whilst advertising them as if they are 'traditional' is quite beyond me - this fad for 'skin on' is simply laziness and a reluctance to peel - whilst the public are silly enough to buy into this! There is nothing 'good' about 'skin on' as the are deep FRIED!! And if one wants CHIPS - what are you thinking of trying to make them healthier! In any event the fish was lovely. I had a gorgeous cheesecake for dessert whilst my frined had a great brownie. Sevice was fist class and when we had to wait for the first course Matt gave us a free drink which is a fantastic touch and would make me want to go back!

I've been a member of the Waves gym at the hotel for some time now, years in fact, however, recently things have taken a huge turn for the better there! Whereas before I would go and weight train, and exercise etc in the very pleasing surroundings, I have now been receiving some pointers and guidance from Dan, a member of staff there, on how to train properly and get the best from my workout. I find Dan extremely professional and knowledgeable about the whole subject of fitness and because of him my gym work is really starting to move up to a much more serious level! Of course, all of the staff at the gym are very friendly and professional too! My only minor criticism of the gym would be the size of the free weight room, which only contains one bench. This can be a problem if there are a few people there. All in all, a great gym, very friendly, a very nice place to be with the added bonus of some professional guidance from Dan! I recommend this gym to anyone looking for some self improvement! Well done!

A group of us have met here every month for a few years for drinks but the reduction in quality of the coffee and the repeatedly poor service in the lounge area has caused us to take our business elsewhere. Weak coffee, diet coke that's flat, rising prices and slow slow service have finally taken its toll. The venue suited us all very well, good car park, good toilet facilities but their is only so much you can take and we finally objected by departing forever.

I went to my staff Christmas party at thus hotel and all I can say is that I will never be returning. I tried to avoid reviewing the hotel party on here but their Facebook page gives you no option to post on there - and I could b=not access contact details easily. The Christmas meal was £27 per head and the food was borderline inedible. My starter of pate had soggy toast - where the chutney had been sitting on it for who knows how long? Others had a soup that they left - it tasted very strange/burnt. My main was a risotto with a cheese and leek tart that my knife and fork could barely cut through. Finally and what I think was probably the worst was my pudding of white chocolate and passion-fruit tart with cream - the cream was yellow and congealed because it had been sitting out on a side for so long. It came with a raspberry compote that had completely dried up and solidified??? This party was a complete waste of money and I would advise people to steer clear of eating at this hotel.

When I look for a hotel I look at the location, facilities and obviously the trip adviser reviews . I can say that this hotel was absolutely fantastic with the perfect location especially when you get a room that overlooks the Derbyshire countryside.the facilities were also very good and being a spa hotel the pool is a must just for the relaxation time you get and this was very clean and there was also a golf course nearby but didn't have to time to investigate.I visited this with family members for a wedding and my room was excellent but out of the three rooms we had all on the same floor one party had to be moved due to a non working toilet and they were then moved to a smaller alternative room which wasn't the best way to start a stay and although the reception staff were very apologetic I would have liked to have seen this problem sorted before we arrived and apart from this minor hiccup I would say that this hotel ticks all the right boxes as the meals were very good and the hotel was spotlessly clean and staff very helpful.i would recommend this hotel and would stay again at this hotel or one of the associated hotels.

A group of us meet for drinks once per month in the foyer lounge of this hotel and the service was again poor this month. The service is usually very slow and staff are often absent and it seems that we are a bit of an inconvenience to serve as the lobby staff are also used on other tasksThree of our group this week were served diet coke that was flat and we asked if it could be changed to diet coke with bubbles. 15 Minutes later they were still waiting and when we asked how long our drinks would be we were told that someone was working on the problem in the cellar. The drinks arrived shortly afterwards with bubbles but all 3 drinks were warm. Guys, how hard can this be for goodness sake? You have a lovely hotel and yet fall down on what I would call a very basic service - some cups of coffee and glasses of diet coke. Please improve your lobby service, you need someone on the floor at all times because you never know how many people are going to use this area - sharper service is essential.

We stayed in a superior room on a midweek break and although the room overlooked the road we did not suffer from any undue road noise in the evening. The room was spacious with air conditioning but it was a little too warm even when on. The bathroom was well maintained and clean and the shower easy to operate.Breakfast was buffet style and although there was a reasonable choice of foods bacon etc did seem quite greasy. We ate on one occasion in the hotel for dinner and the service was efficient and friendly and the food was good. The service at breakfast was variable in that as we were waiting to be seated for 2 minutes the young man on duty was obviously pre-occupied but walked past us twice without any acknowledgement. A simple comment with eye contact acknowledging our presence would have been appreciated. The next morning a friendly lady went out of her way in her greeting and it was remarkable as to how an initial greeting can set the tone for the experience. It was also apparent that the young men serving on looked most unhappy in their duties which again was a marked contrast to the evening meal.

I turned it off overnight and then the room was a little chilly by morning. A good choice at breakfast , all self service but coffee brought to the table. Overall good value forc money

This stay started off well: The chap at reception was very efficient and personable and I think I got a better room than I'd booked.... Thereafter things got worse:The shower cubicle in my room (426) is tiny - I'd guess less than 2' square. The shower head comes out at chin level on me and the water doesn't flow down the drain very well so by the time I've finished, it's lapping at my ankles. I asked for a plumber to fix it but nothing happened. The Breakfast is adequate but on both mornings I was there, they somehow forgot to bring me my tea. Given that this was the ONLY thing they do, I'm a bit surprised! The hotel is clean but a little tired. Staff are pleasant enough but the breakfast crew really need to wake up. I'll be returning to Derby quite a bit in the future but will try and find somewhere better then.

Good comfortable room. Well equipped except there was not enough milk for the tea and coffee. Bar prices are a bit high. Restaurant food tasty and plentiful. Staff welcoming and efficient. Breakfast is good apart from the toast. There is a toasting machine which warms the bread up but for proper toast you need to run it through again. This makes a slow process and queues.

The room we stayed in room 422 the bathroom door was warped and rotten due to damp. The air conditioning was on constantly not giving out heat. What gave it away was probably the convector heater. The general condition of the Hotel requires a good revamp and redecorating as it is looking very tired and neglectedFood was very good staff were pleasant and polite. Bar prices very steep though

6 of us have just returned from a weekend for my husbands birthday. We paid 150 per couple for bb and evening meal. The hotel is beautiful inside and the rooms are larger than average with very large beds. We were also pleasantly surprised to find that we had a balcony. Although our balcony overlooked the service area it was partially hidden by large troughs filled with flowers and there was trellis to the sides. The spa area is beautifu, although looking a little tired in places. It would also benefit from having more than one chair and one sunlounger. It was a sunny day and would have been nice to have got out of the water and relaxed at the poolside. Also the jacuzzi water is incredibly hot but even saying that, these small things didn't ruin the experience. The hotel staff need a special mention, as although very professional, they are also very friendly.Nothing is too much trouble. The meal we had in the restaurant at night was beautiful. The food was beautifully presented and cooked. We had 2 waiters looking after us, Jose and Sam. They were both very attentive and we were made to feel that we were the only people in there.Jose brought a cake out for my husbands birthday and Sam offered to take pictures for us.A very good weekend and we will be back

Invited for dinner here tonight was like an episode of "You've Been Framed". We kept looking for a hidden camera as the service was hilarious because of the staff bringing the wrong drinks to our table, then proceeded to ask other diners if this was their drinks order. My sister ordered a glass of wine & then had to ask for it to be brought to the table when the mains were served. A jug of slightly warm tap water was brought to us, but there was no ice (and we weren't asked if we'd like ice) or a slice of lemon in it. My starter was spoiled by the hard egg on top of lukewarm black pudding, but my main of chicken was delicious, although vegetables are extra. Chips/french fries are on the menu, but we had to ask if they had potatoes. The tables are fairly close together, so we could see & hear the next tables conversation and hear the problems they had with their order too. The staff were not over attentive, but were around. The rooms are quite nice, plenty of room, but simple things were missing from the bathroom (a shower cap would have been a nice touch). I don't think I'd go out of my way to visit there again. Very disappointing overall.

We were surprised how nice this place was for the price we paid. The negative, we booked this through another booking site as we were looking for hotels near Alton Towers. On their website it said it was 15 miles away which seemed reasonable, I didn't like the look of those B&Bs that did have availability and we were trying to find something suitable for all of us. It certainly wasn't 15 miles, more like 23+ and some 45 minute drive. Had we known we certainly wouldn't have booked. That said, the stay was great. A nice, friendly and quick check in and we went up to our room. It was a good room, a nice size and a large, comfy bed (we've got a queen at home so it's unusual to find one similar). Some of the furniture was a little on the worn side but nothing that would put me off.We decided to eat in the restaurant rather than heading out again. With two picky teenagers it was difficult to find something on the bar or restaurant menu that would suit us all. Eventually we opted for the restaurant but asked for a tuna melt from the bar menu. The waitress went to check with chef but when reported back to us we were told it wasnt possible as they were a member of staff down. This was just ridiculous but when we asked to see the manager he was more than happy to oblige. The food was also surprisingly good. I've found in the past that hotel restaurants often over glamorise the menu but under deliver on the quality. We're also rather picky and didn't need to complain or send something back at all.If you're looking for something mid-market I'd definitely recommend.

The attention to detail was wonderful and enjoyed seeing in the New Year with quite a few dances on the dance floor courtesy of the all inclusive 'disco'. This again was due to the fact that the waiting, kitchen and bar staff were working flat out to ensure it was a memorable evening. The breakfast was excellent, plenty of choice and the standard of cleanliness was very evident. My wife and I have been visiting this hotel for quite a while now and this is not the first time wqe have suffered after eating breakfast. Most of the time we miss it but on occasions we do wander down to partake of the buffet breakfast. This time however, I am going to complain as it was not until we had left the hotel (11am departure) that we started to suffer from stomach cramps and the need to visit the loo. Both my wife and I hads to travel 200 miles by car down motorways and it was extremely uncomfortable having to hope that we made it to the next services. We left at 11:30am and at 20:30pm we are still suffering from the effects. As we only had the breakfast ,we can pin it on nothing else but the scrambled eggs which did look as if they had been there for a long time. Dried and not very pleasant, but we took some of the better looking. It would be interesting to see if anyone else has had a bad stomach today 27th Sept 2014. Secondly. This is for the management .Our room was not cleaned properly for four days. Dust under the table and chairs dusty. Bidet not plumbed in & not working . Air con needs batteries in remote controls, The glass in the shower had water stains on it and I marked it the first day.The mark was still there three days later. Its the little things that need attention. There was hair all along the back of the setee. All the glass on the table needs to be removed and cleaned properly. We had a meal in the room which was left there all day until the following night. The cleaning looks as if it was done in a rush. Room No: Imari Suite. I am going to review this hotel every visit.

Our experience differed drastically from some other reviewers.Cutlery was laid out properly, complete with bread plate and knife. But no bread or butter, you have to buy this separately - odd for a hotel of this calibre. The starters arrived, and we both felt they were mediocre at best. The wine was excellent, though, and served at the right temperature. The fun really started with the main course. The plates arrived - a slice of salmon (which we later found to be cooked to perfection) with half a tomato. Shortly, the chips and potatoes arrived. We were simply awaiting our salads and my sauce, Fifteen minutes later, we captured a waiter and asked about them. Nothing resulted, so we repeated the exercise, and within a couple of minutes, a lady arrived who seemed to carry some seniority. I pointed to my half-tomato. "Is that a salad?""No," she replied, and rushed off to deal with the problem, as well as my sauce. She duly returned with a large bowl of salad between us, and a sauce dish with a single tablespoon of something just covering the bottom. She disappeared before I could ask about it, but not before announcing that the wine would be taken from the bill. Some recompense at least as we tucked in to our now lukewarm meal. I couldn't bring myself to touch the sauce, which I felt was not only insulting in quantity, but seemed to be almost glowering at me from the depths of the sauce dish.Finishing our main, we elected not to risk a dessert. Eventually, our plates were cleared and I pointed out to the waiter - probably the fifth waiter at our table - that the sauce was untouched and that I would not be paying for it. He assured me that it would be removed from the bill, and we asked for said bill.Ten minutes later, we asked again for the bill.Ten minutes later, I stood, hoping that it might instigate some action, but to no avail, so I marched across to the entrance, where the bill was printed out. I pointed out that the sauce would not be paid for and should have been removed. She duly removed it. I added no tip, and this is a first - if anything, I tend towards overgenerosity. The service was appalling, the food mediocre and we dreaded what we would encounter for Breakfast next morning. But that is for the hotel review.

Some friends from a distance invited us out for Saturday supper on the Friday, but ringing round all the local pubs where we enjoy eating they were all fully booked, unsurprisingly. Our daughter had her wedding reception here five years ago and they did it beautifully, so we decided to try it again. We asked for a 'quiet table if possible' not really expecting that would be possible, and actually when we arrived at 8pm the restaurant was packed, but nevertheless they had found us a table for four in the window which was perfect. It took a little while for the orders to be taken, but once that was done the service was great, friendly but professional, and the food came hot and tasty. Plenty of veg for us all in separate dishes on the table, really nice Greek salad, chilli prawns, gammon steaks, salmon, featherblade of beef and all beautifully presented, suitable portions so we all had room for dessert, sticky toffee pudding, lemon tart, profiteroles with lots of sauce, couldn't fault it. In a pub on a Saturday night however good the food, it could well have been too noisy for a conversation, and more cramped on the table with things piled perhaps on to those annoying platters where the food falls off! Prices here rather higher, look on the website to see the sort of thing, but you expect that for a hotel and we felt it was worth it.We weren't residents, but they do a good value dinner, bed and breakfast offer and then you can use the pool and gym as well. Recommend it!

My partner and I were meeting family from Nottingham and this seemed like a good half way point. We were a bit apprehensive that it may have been a faceless corporate place lacking in atmosphere and decent food. We needn't have worried; the restaurant wasn't very busy for a Saturday night so service was prompt and very accommodating. If anything we probably had everybody serve us at some point of the evening, so there was some occasional confusion as to whether or not orders had been taken. All staff were very professional and efficient though. It was good to see a menu printed for each day, quite rare these days as it shows some thought and attention to detail over a (presumably) regularly changing menu. There was plenty to choose from (as shown by each of us having something different), it was imaginative and generally well priced for a large "business" hotel. There were just one or two points though; it would be nice in a quality restaurant to have maybe even a part tablecloth. A bare table looked unfinished and spoiled the quality setting the restaurant was trying to create. The warm bread was a nice touch, although it would be better as a choice of rolls rather than sliced French bread. We all agreed that the food was good however, my Fathers 10oz rib eye steak seemed more like rump. This was not cheap at £23.95 (including an unreasonable £4 supplement)! My partner's a Vegetarian and always rates a restaurant by how good the Veggie dishes are. He was slightly disappointed to find his Gnocchi and pumpkin pieces in oil was just that, no spices, herbs, other vegs or any sauces so was rather bland. It would be good if these dishes weren't treated like an afterthought. Very unusually, we all had (delicious and tasty) desserts. The choices were varied and the Vanilla Brulee with pistachio brittle was fantastic. Overall, we enjoyed our meals and would go again.

On sitting down the waitress was very helpful, my partner and I had been craving garlic bread all day which although wasn't on the menu, they were happy to provide. I ordered the steak and was pleasantly surprised to have a very tender, thick cut sirloin steak cooked exactly at my request. My partner ordered the cajun chicken which again left him also feeling content. The wine may be a bit pricey but its no different to elsewhere. All in all surprisingly nice and enjoyable.

They didn't ask us to pre-order. There were 14 of us, seated at 2 tables - a table of 10 and a table of 4, which wasn't ideal. We had to wait over an hour for the main course, then over half an hour for dessert. The food was lovely and well-presented when it eventually arrived. If we go again, I think we should pre-order and also ask for the table layout to be different, so that we can all sit together.

We love this place and come here regularly. First time ever I wasn't happy. The sausage meal was tasty but the veg were dire. Grossly overcooked tiny bits of carrot a few gratings of red cabbage and the tiniest bit of broccoli that would have been more appropriate for a toddler trying new foods!
