The Melrose in Brighton and Hove

Alas no longer the Melrose. It has belonged to The Regency (next door) for some years and they decided to call it by an Italian name but it is still run as the old Melrose but with fewer dishes and prices still the same as next door. For years we though they were rivals, but no, same food, interchangeable waiters and, as always much emptier than next door.

We chose to dine here because we could take our dogs into the restaurant. We loved dinner here, the speedy and attentive service was second to none, nothing was too much trouble. We had a selection of fish dishes which were all good and appropriately price. We’d highly recommend this restaurant especially if you’re looking for somewhere with your fury friend.

Last visited here a few years ago when I think was under different owners, the standards have dropped so far in that time. The lady that showed us to our table was lovely, but our waitress was the opposite, it was as if she was doing us a favour by being there, she was miserable and inattentive. Had a starter that was poor, then had lemon sole which was watery and did not seem properly cooked in the middle, told the waitress who just shrugged her shoulders and walked off. Would not go back.

Excellent location, just opposite i360 and the burnt pier. Fresh fish and sefood serverd with a smile, warm welcome from the staff. They even do Sunday Roasts. Highly recommened

The online menu prices are much, much less than the prices on the menu in the restaurant. The chips were tasteless and only warm, As a Hove resident I would never eat here again. I always get the impression that restaurants that rely on passing trade, don't have to worry about repeat business.

Food was fresh and tasty. The restaurant offered options for those not keen on seafood which was a lovely surprise. Cocktails were nice and service was good.

The staff were super friendly with great humour and although the food wasn't bad it didn't have the wow factor. Partly my fault because I keep hoping that the king prawns will really be king prawns but sadly that doesn't seem possible in this country. I'd better go back to Italy.

Molto contento della scelta casuale. Personale gentilissimo, ottima cucina. Consigliato anche a chi ha figli piccoli. Davvero una bella scelta.

We visited Brighton and found this amazing restaurant. All three of us had various different meals. All of which were excellent. The seafood pasta was full of mussels, class, prawns and squid. The sea bass was delicious and so was thr plaice. Portions were huge. Staff were friendly and service was excellent, even though the restaurant was absolutely full to its capacity. When we visit Brighton again we will definitely be eating in there again.

Came here because next door at The Regency was crowded. Ordered 6 oysters and Whitebait for starters. Then Fried Haddock and chips and mussels for the main course. The oysters were ok but why should you have to pay extra for the vinaigrette. The only thing I would say about the oysters is that if the person who opened them was better at it, you wouldn't get bits of broken shell like I did. The whitebait was again ok, but I have had better elsewhere. The haddock was not fresh , it tasted as a piece that had been frozen, and the batter was not crispy.It definitely looked better than it tasted. The mussels were again ok but probably could have done with about another 30 seconds of cooking rather than probably leaving them to steam open. We found at least six that were unopened. Again, like the vinaigrette, why should you have to pay extra for a few slices of French stick. Overall, I used to like coming to this place but it will be sometime before my next visit. When we left, there was only one other diner in the place, whereas in the Regency next door, it still looked busy. Perhaps that is saying something.

Two very average meals three days apart. First was grilled haddock, overcooked and scrawny (chips were perfect mind but isn't this minimum entry level for this kind of place) , second lemon sole grilled perfectly but potatoes (ordered well done) distinctly undercooked and flowery - I suspect there is a problem with the supply, too watery perhaps. As an aside, chocolate ice cream was tasteless and low quality, certainly wouldn't bother again. How can there be such a difference with the sister place next door, that doesn't seem to have these problems.

Today I had a business meeting near Brighton and took the opportunity to invite a friend to have a late lunch by the sea before returning to London. Trip Adviser recommended a few restaurants in the neighborhood and “The Melrose” was just a few blocks away from where we were. For starters we had a plate of whole baby Squid served with lemon , a bowl of mussels and some king prawns. The squid was deep fried from frozen and chewed a lot. The mussels were absolutely tasteless and the king prawn was served in a small boat swimming in butter! The same with the main course. The option “Fresh Grilled Fish” was only on menu! My salmon was deep fried and it only tasted oil! Now I understand why the restaurant next door was full and The Melrose was empty 🤦‍♂️ ! I'm writing this review on the train with a bad stomach. Never again!

It was lovely to sit outside on a sunny day watching the world go by and enjoying the view. The staff were very friendly and the food was good. I had the seabass and although a little expensive that’s the sign of the times and overall I had a lovely meal.

Can’t really say this was the best fish restaurant I have visited, but saying that oysters and scallops starters were good. I chose the surf and turf, overpriced at £47.. A half lobster with very little meat in was a big disappointment and to not let a medium rare steak rest properly is a sacrilege. I had blood juices running into the lobster butter sauce. Not what I wanted. The quality of my wife’s fish platter was quite good she said. I know the price of fresh fish is very high, but with a bottle of wine, the total bill with service charge was £143. I have paid a lot less for superior fine dining restaurants.

We had a wonderful meal in The Melrose. We both chose seabass fillets and they were the best we've ever had. The service was first class and we had a very enjoyable evening. Thoroughly recommended.

Great fresh seafood, really friendly staff. Ate here 2 nights and not disappointed on either occasion. Crab salad was best I have ever had by far.

Exhausted as setting up for a conference. Hotel restaurant closed so wandered down the road and happened on Melrose. What a treat! The best scallops I have had in forever. Just had the prawns and scallop starter and a Greek Salad and that was enough....

Lovely restaurant, very welcoming staff. We had been recommended to go here by family and it definitely didn't disappoint. Surf and turf was the best that we had ever had. All came in a timely fashion and good sized portions. Highly recommend

I have been to this restaurant over dozen of times.It use to be my favourite. However, it is under new ownership. Probably people next door owns it now.Service is very very poor. It took more then an hour to be served. Order was lost, so we have to give order again.Wrong order was served. When asked about it, we were told that now we need to pay extra to get original order.They did not asked for which fish we wanted either. Waiter/ cashier was a bit odd. Tried to make odd jokes. I had to go to the till to pay as no one was bringing us the bill. The waiter asked if I really want to pay, and if I have enough money in the bank to with my card.Food was not better then small takeaway type restaurants. They were refusing to accept more customers at 8pm, while restaurant was only half filled.I noticed that chef was running in between restaurant and next door cafe.I use to recommend this restaurant to everyone. Now I will recommend not to go to this restaurant.

Me and my partner ordered a wonderful large seafood platter. The food came quickly and was very fresh. Lively and ambient environment with the staff taking great care of us and being very attentive, truly going the extra mile. We had a lovely meal at this restaurant.

I am ashamed that I have never visited Melrose and I am the wrong side of 60. The reason being that the Fish is delicious and reminds me of the no frills, no spills Restaurants I remember as a boy. I had whole Calamari to start and salmon to follow. This place feels and looks as authentic, unpretentious and honest as the day is long. How refreshing. Lovely view of the seafront and great service. Big TICK.

Incredible steak and the waiter took the time to explain what the skate wing was, which was also very nice. Could maybe go with a bit more fish in the fish soup.

Been here in the past and this food was nothing like the last time. We booked online for Melrose but message in door Regency was covering all their bookings. Food bland and over cooked . Best i can say is service was quick but think it was because they wanted you in an out quick. Disappointed to say the least wont be going again. Used to be a great place

This is my preferred fish restaurant in Brighton! Not as busy as the more famous Regency at the side of it, it has however the same owner and quality. However, it is never so busy, and it is more relaxed and friendly. The fish and chips are to die for, but also the steaks are wonderful. And do try the crème caramel....

Visited the restaurant late at night and were greeted by lovely, friendly staff. We chose the surf and turf. It was beautifully cooked and flavoured with a lovely garlic butter. We weren’t hurried out at all, despite being last there and thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

Went as a day out to sea coast, walk into the Melrose Restaurant with my husband for cid and chips, politely spoke to the waitress for a seat inside for two she explain we are welcome to take a seat, as we seated ourselves to a very small Grey and white Marble table a very rude young waiter with silver rim glasses shouted at us “No” you can not sit we are not serving. I was shocked by this behaviour and explained your co-worker said it’s ok and not a problem his co worker said to him it’s ok and so did another co- worker said to home what’s the problem that they are ok to sit there he than shouted to the both of the female staff “No” they looked at each other and I realised it was because my husband is a BLACK MAN and they do not serve BLACK people. Maybe it did not Help that I too am Chinese in Appearance too …. People of ethic diversity should not go into this place to eat You Are Not Welcome here.

I was not allowed to sit here with my husband and have a meal at this establishment, in response to previous message (L7416WLmariac) this restaurant does not cater for Black people and the racist behaviour by an individual employee who is clearly a racist in front of other diners was obvious to see he refusal to serve and allowed us to sit although his co-workers were happy for us to sit was discrimination at the highest level and this place should be investigated and definitely he did not try to hide it. Any Black person thinking of dining here do Not dine and spend your hard work money in such an establishment. This place is ok if you are represented by ethnic group of White, European but not other and definitely not traveling from London which represent a high proportion visitors of the Black Community the Bikers Group that Travel through to Brighton for seafood dish especially your Cod and Chips.

My wife and l were lucky to get an early evening outside table to eat as we hadn't booked. Terrific hard working, friendly staff. Enjoyed a very substantial two course meal each that was very tasty and well cooked. Went back on the Sunday having booked and sat inside as it was still very hot outside, thankfully anticipated the long queues of those not having booked.The second night just had a main course of Mussels each which was very substantial.Thoroughly recommend.

Our waitress Anna was friendly and served us quickly - if it wasn’t for Anna this review would have less stars!Where we were sat towards the back of the restaurant all we could here was the staff arguing with one another, glass bottles being emptied into bins and cutlery being thrown into containers! Also surprised that the young waiter didn’t cause an accident running around the restaurant like a headless chicken!Our food of simple fish and chips was average - it wasn’t great! Given that we’re just start to coming out of a pandemic - there was no toilet tissue or towels to dry hands either in the men’s or ladies!On paying the bill the lady who took our payment was moody and didn’t even say thank you! Yes - we visited on a very busy bank holiday Sunday just after some of the Covid restrictions had lifted so can make some allowance for service but it really needs to improve!

Food looked ok, unfortunately myself and my girlfriend were there for an hour and saw none of our food arrive. We were brought bread and some butter, and weirdly a small jar of tartar sauce before any food. Got the attention of the waiting staff a few times to ask about our food but only received generic gestures and nothing else. Finally saw our original waitress and asked and she had forgotten to pass our order. Restaurant was quietening down and there were roughly 4/5 other tables ordering at the time. Waitress apologised however mostly really disappointing staff, not very friendly at all until something went wrong. Won’t be going back and wouldn’t recommend.

Food was excellent ( scallops, tempura prawns, fried seafood platter and Crab salad), service lovely and the wine choice whilst small was also good. I did think it the restaurant looked a little old fashioned ( it has been there for over 50 years!) but would not hesitate in going back and also recommending it to anyoneThe batter on all of my fish was very light and the scallops were lovely.Excellent value for really well cooked food.

Most of well known restaurants in Brighton were fully booked so we chanced the Melrose. What a delight. Lovely friendly staff, very accommodating. Food was excellent and great value for money. I urge people going to Brighton to try this little gem. Will definitely go back

We came in on a very wet Sunday lunchtime. We were the only people in there for most of the time. Menu is predominantly seafood. Very well priced for what you get. There are a few Greek Cypriot items - they used to be run by Greek Cypriots as I understand. We had Cod and chips. I will give 10/10 for the Cod - it was cooked to perfection in a very light batter. The fish was so fresh it was absolutely delicious. However, the let down was the chips. I don't think it was how they cooked it - they need to change their chip suppliers! I think they should have homemade chips to make it more appealing to customers. I would have given 5 stars if not for the chips.Otherwise a very pleasant experience.

We booked late at the Melrose on a very wet and windy night in Brighton due to a pathetic lack of options at a different restaurant ( Dorset street diner). We were kindly squeezed in and on arrival made to feel very welcome. The food was fresh, delicious and reasonably priced and we had no regrets at rebooking at late notice after feeling disappointment elsewhere. The crab was lovely, moules mariniere and oysters delicious, scallops generous and very well cooked and all the trimmings perfect. Service was excellent and it felt like a real family affair that we were lucky to have found whilst out on a limb. Thanks to all the staff at the Melrose. We will be back again.

We went for dinner on a quiet thursday night. Having been before thought we would return, however we think it has gone down hill. Staff were wearing masks, but one kept removing hers. No hand sanitizer stations. Tables not cleaned between diners. High chairs also not clean. Menus were reused and not cleaned.Food was average

Realmente disfruté de mi almuerzo en el restaurante Melrose la semana pasada. Es un lugar familiar sin lujos con muy buena comida y excelente servicio. Continuaban con el plan Eat Out to Help Out, que fue muy amable de su parte. Sin duda volveré la próxima vez que esté en Brighton.

Habíamos leído cosas buenas sobre este restaurante de pescado y realmente no queríamos nada más que un buen pescado y patatas fritas al final de la tarde. El morral era bueno y muy fresco. El eglefino y las patatas fritas estaban bien, pero nada excepcional, de hecho las patatas fritas estaban crudas y duras. Estaba muy tranquilo como se esperaba a esa hora del día pero hubiéramos esperado más tiempo para preparar muy buena comida. El servicio fue bueno.

Excelentes platos de pescado con porciones frescas y generosas. Para empezar, disfrutamos de papas fritas Hall Uni y langostinos de cola entera. La fuente de mariscos calientes era maravillosa con langosta cangrejo langostinos vieiras y mejillones. Precios muy bien al igual que la lista de vinos. Comer al aire libre e interior hace que este sea un restaurante repetitivo para nosotros.

Es una pena que fui aquí un domingo por la noche después de regresar de Londres hambriento, estaba sentado por un joven que tomó mi pedido de vino, cuando regresó con el vino, luego pedí un plato de mariscos. Después de media hora regresó y me preguntó quién tomó mi pedido le respondí 'sí', luego me trajo algunas aceitunas y pan para compensar, a estas alturas ya he pasado de tener hambre esperando y esperando, otra media hora llega y el morral fue grasiento como estaba la mayor parte, no es bueno y estaré alejando a mis amigos, etc. de ir aquí. Lo único bueno de esto fue las otras 2 camareras y vino encantadoras, que eran amables de lo contrario una estrella.

From london, day trip to Brighton. This place does excellent food compared to places in London. Very reasonably priced too. Lift batter, great fresh fish. Delicious. Recommended for everyone. Lovely staff too.

Great food and service. The seafood is just great and could not fault the service. The staff are really friendly and genuine. We were only in Brighton for a few days but visited the restaurant twice because of the food and service.

This was just so good. From start to finish the staff looked after us, the starter and mains were brilliant and the location you can’t get any better. We can’t wait to visit again!

According to a review this was supposed to be the best fish & chips place in Brighton! Although not too bad it was not the best we've ever had! Incidentally this & Regency next door seem to be the same outfit!

Fui a este restaurante un martes y le pregunté a una señora si quitaban pescado y papas fritas y ella dijo que sí, pero sin salsas y estaba feliz con eso. Pedí tres pescado y patatas fritas y pregunté si tenían menú para niños, a lo que ella respondió que sí y traté de ver qué tamaño es una porción para niños para decidir si debería ceñirme a las porciones para adultos. En ese momento, salió frente al mostrador y me dijo que tenía que tomar una decisión ya que los clientes estaban llegando. Le di las gracias y me fui. Toda esta conversación probablemente tomó menos de dos minutos.Así que no puedo comentar sobre la comida pero seguro que el personal necesita formación. En dos ocasiones, mi pareja y yo hemos intentado comer en este restaurante y la camarera es tan grosera que te deja parado en la entrada durante 5 a 10 minutos y ella ni siquiera está ocupada. Luego nos sentó y ni siquiera nos ofreció una bebida, teníamos menús sucios * no importa COVID * pasó junto a nosotros alrededor de 20 a 30 veces, haciéndose parecer ocupada sin preguntarnos si necesitábamos algo hasta que finalmente nos fuimos debido a no hay servicio después de 25 minutos de espera. No trabajes en la hostelería si así es como actúas. La gente viene a Brighton porque es un lugar encantador con residentes amigables, no para una camarera con cara de trueno porque pediste una mesa.

They do not care about social distancing at all. When I mentioned to our server that there were tons of women crammed into the very small bathroom, the manager rudely barged in and interrupted me with, “That’s not our fault, it’s up to the customer to take care of themselves.” I pointed out that they had a sign on the door to the toilets that said people had to socially distance, and also said I wasn’t blaming them, I just thought they’d just like to know. In response she waved her hands in my face and walked away. On top of all that the coffee was burned and the chips were soggy and flavorless. Not a great place, corona or no.

My husband and I went there for a meal this week having read some good reviews of the restaurant and we were very disappointed. The food was mediocre at best, over priced, poor quality in a basic cafe style restaurant. We were charged £18 for a bottle of wine, no wine cooler and it still had the £6:99 rrp price tag on!

We went for what could be our last meal out for quite a while. We saw the Regency next door and this one with its white tablecloths. Both had a few spaced out tables occupied. We all had simple cod and chips. Fish and mushy peas were fine, chips and bit dry. Cups of tea all round with a very friendly albeit worried owner, expecting to be forced to close very soon.

Must of changed owners, because we went on a recommendation, so as we went past our usual restaurant which was packed, we stood outside the Melrose and we thought it was shut, as it was dark and empty...we should have walked away at that moment! but no, alas we went in, I had crispy fish and chips peas and mushrooms, partner had mixed seafood platter, the batter on fish was really greasy, chips were kind of dry liked they had been recooked, partner was not happy with his fish either. The staff were attentive but probably because we were the only ones in there, the lady commented on how quite it was, I felt like telling her that its because everyone was in next door Regency Restaurant where I wish we were! a couple of times men seemed to just appear from the back of restaurant and walk thru and out the main door, not sure if kitchen staff or a short cut from flats above, but the state of them hope it was not kitchen staff! Not impressed, didnt stay for coffee. It was not cheap in there either! I do not recommend this restaurant

I visited this restaurant with my family on 21st February and started out having a lovely evening. The restaurant was not very busy despite it being a Friday night but the staff were all very attentive. We ordered starters, all very nice. For mains 2 of us ordered the hot seafood platter. Cannot fault it, one of our party had the surf n turf and said it was lovely.HOWEVER, unfortunately I have a MASSIVE problem with this restaurant. When I first arrived, I visited the ladies. There are 2 loos and the one on the left (with the window) absolutely stunk of cigarettes. Somebody had quite clearly had a cigarette in the ladies toilets. How revolting! I went back to my table and did not think to mention it to staff as the culprit had left. At the end of the evening I again visited the ladies loos. This time the left toilet door was locked and the entire corridor totally stunk of cigarettes! The culprit was obviously back in there smoking. I was absolutely horrified! I went back to my table and as I did I passed the kitchen and the chef walked out in front of me WITH A HALF SMOKED CIGARETTE IN HIS MOUTH!!! To say this put me off was a complete understatement. To make matters worse when I returned to my table, I realised that my family were the only table left in there. The lady smoking in the toilets was our waitress!!! HOW ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING!! I have been in contact with Brighton and Hove Council as this is totally unacceptable. Smoking indoors in itself is putting customers health at serious risk and to be in a food environment!! And what on earth was the chef doing leaving the kitchen with a half smoked cigarette in his mouth!! I will NOT be visiting this restaurant ever again and I would suggest thinking very seriously if you are considering booking it. Absolutely unacceptable in my opinion. Total breach of health and safety. Makes me wonder what else goes on in that kitchen….

Food was average and chips were dry oven chips instead of fish and chip shop chips. Definitely better places around Brighton

This is a fish restaurant that looks like a cafe. The food was good with lots of fish dishes to chose from. The service was slick and friendly. The value was excellent. I’d go again.

I was fooled by the good reviews but when my Haddock and chips arrived it already looked sorry for itself on the plate. The chips were of a frozen oven variety and the little old fish came in a tasteless soggy batter, served with a wilted garnish of salad leaves. Staff were nice but they really should know better, I left feeling like I’d been robbed.

We have been going for lunch at the Melrose for years. It’s a great restaurant on the sea front. It was voted the best fish and chips in town but that’s not the only good thing about it. It’s a very friendly place with a good selection of good quality fish cooked simply but well. It’s always on the top of our list when considering where to go to.

tasty food reasonably priced, tick those two boxes. Set on the seafront this is a place to get a good value meal.

This restaurant is what it is: proper fish dishes simply well cooked without pretensions, fuss or gimmicks. I love the slightly retro feel of the place: it’s been here a long time, locals know it, and staff know them. As a stranger dining alone I felt very welcome and had a lovely simple dinner of oysters, sole and tiramisu. I stayed two hours quietly reading the New Statesman and will certainly return whenever in Brighton. Cherish a place like this - or lose it to another here-today, gone-tomorrow joint!

Fish Friday so we walked along the promenade to Regency Square, then a few yards more to the Melrose. A very traditional fish restaurant that was the "first picture house outside London" (says so in the menu). I had scallops in a garlic sauce for a starter, my girlfriend had prawns and avocado. Both very good. I had haddock and chips with peas for a main, partner had mussels, starter size, but it turned to be enormous, both very tasty. No dessert as we had eaten plenty. This remains a favourite fish place.

Il calore di un ristorante familiare. Il sapore di pesce cucinato perfettamente. La vista del mare e del molo bruciato attraverso i vetri. Un pinot rosè al bicchiere di buona qualità. Prenotate il tavolo tondo vicino alla finestra e .... sarete felici.

Très bon restaurant avec poissons de qualité. Les prix sont très abordable pour ce type de repas par rapport en France.

If you’re into fish and seafood, this is a downright seminal restaurant to visit for dinner in the evening. Most evenings, I had their Seafood Pasta. Not just a treat for the eye, but one for the mouth as well!!

Durante muchos años siempre hemos elegido el restaurante Regency para pescado, pero hemos ignorado el Melrose de al lado como la "relación pobre"

Cada vez que visitamos Brighton nos gusta comer en el restaurante The Melrose. Nunca hemos dejado de tener otra cosa que una excelente comida, tanto en calidad como en valor. Mi marido tenía solla asada que estaba hecha a la perfección y mi bacalao era suculento y sabroso. Buen servicio y excelente relación calidad-precio. La hora del almuerzo o la cena nunca dejan de proporcionar una excelente comida y servicio.

Es de esperar que un restaurante frente al mar en Brighton sea una estafa, pero este lugar no es nada de eso. Fantástico pescado simple, buenos precios honestos y excelente servicio. Con manteles blancos de lino crujiente, este lugar tiene un encanto que muchos establecimientos modernos no pueden igualar.

Saw this Restuarant, a few doors away from where we was staying. Wow what a find, The loveliest massive piece of Cod really thick and white, with a light crispy batter, and tasty chips, and the Lovely Waitress, so friendly. I Would recommend this Restuarant.

Popped in for dinner as my Brighton go to next door was full. Have to say staff lovely and our fish dishes were excellent. If only they did proper chips this would have been outstanding. No complaints on service or price, in fact for a few pounds more for real fresh chips I'd have been very happy. But it is all about the fish.

Visited here about 3 years ago so thought as we're back try it out again and it is just as good if not better then before. my husband had the (Huge) Hot Shellfish Platter and I had the surf and turf it was very nice the only down side was the lobster was on the small side and was very little meat inside but that did not deter us the staff was amazing and went out of there way to get a dessert that they had ran out of for me 110% for the staff nothing but good things to say

Nous sommes arrivés un soir, avons demandé s'ils avaient une table, et la prêtresse de l'accueil qui se prenait pour Anna Wintour nous a juste tourné le dos dans un "Only bookiiiiiiing" . SO RUDE !

Fancied some ‘proper’ fish and chips, and went here on purpose. The haddock was as white as alabaster and the batter golden and crispy, a lovely tangy tarter sauce and mushy peas. It was an absolute delight and the staff were great, felt like they owned it, and should if they don’t.

This restaurant has fabulous sea views and friendly staff. We came on a recommendation and had checked the reviews here too. We were sadly disappointed with the food. The portions are generous but quality is very mediocre We had scallops then sea bass, crab salad and Dover sole. The fish wasn’t very hot but was ok the crab was poor. It was tasteless and I would guess that it had been frozen or wasn’t fresh. There was a mass of pinkish white meat more than would have come from one crab and very little brown meat. If you eat here have the fish and chips they looked good. I mentioned to a waitress that the crab wasn’t great and it was removed from the bill.

Ordered plaice, excellent. Chips are clearly frozen, nothing like proper chip shop chips, hence can't give a 5. Definitely recommend on the fish alone.

Any 'first-timer' should realise that this Restaurant is right on the 'main drag' of Brighton seafront. Hence, if the doors are open, you will get the noise and exhaust emissions of passing traffic. Given that we visited at 6.30pm on a Saturday, it was busy. However, service was painfully slow and I certainly wouldn't have paid a service charge - had they not automatically added 10% to the bill, which I didn't realise until later.

I eat here this evening whilst I was working away - very friendly staff and the food was superb. The best squid I have ever eaten and the plaice was delicious.

This is a marvelously restaurant just in front of the sea with a sweet atmosphere and a really nice and smiley staff. Here I ate a seafood pasta. Usually I don’t like seafood pasta but there I just loved it. It was wonderful!! Then I tasted the baklava and ... OMG DE-LI-COUS!!! You have to try this restaurant in Brighton.

Excellent location on the sea front opposite the I360. Worth reserving a table in the window or outside if you can. Good old fish n chips or more sophisticated grilled fish or shell fish. Service pleasant and timely.

So this restaurant was rated best fish and chips restaurant in Brighton by no less than The Argus, in June 2018. Well a local paper would know wouldn't they? So we went in great anticipation.

Whilist staying at the nearby hotel we thought we try the Melrose restaurant I must say so happy that we did the Cod & chips are very good.

We ate here on a Saturday afternoon on the recommendation of a friend. Without the recommendation I would definitely have hesitated. From the outside it doesn’t look the most visually appealing - but I guess the weather on the English seafront is unforgiving. However the warmth of our greeting was genuine and the food was excellent - freshly prepared and served with care. Four of us enjoyed a two course meal with drinks and the bill was £35/head. The shellfish looked excellent and the crab was lovely. There is a 10% service charge added to the bill which I am not a fan of as a practice but it saves leaving a tip. Recommended.
