My partner and I came for lunch here today. We didn't have a booking and the place was packed when we arrived however, we were warmly greeted and a table was found for us straight away. The food and service was outstanding. We were served by 3 lovely, pleasant ladies at various different times throughout our meal and the food arrived in a decent time and was wonderful. My partner had a lovely chat with some of the ladies who served us before we left and I do hope that they get to see this as they were fantastic and so very warm and welcoming. We will definitely return soon and would highly recommend. Thank you.

Went to the Maypole Inn for my mums 60th birthday. The staff were incredible! They made a little sign for the table, were very attentive and friendly, made adjustments to meals to suit intolerances a member of our party had and the food was all brought out hot at the same time for us all to enjoy our meal together. The food was so tasty, one member of our party had a mixed grill from the specials board and said it was the best one he's had in a long time! Plenty of options for vegetarian and vegan diets too. They also had no issues with us bringing in a cake and candles to embarrass the birthday girl, they even brought a card over from them all at the Inn too which was so sweet! Thanks again to all the staff there. Will be returning at some point! x

can’t believe as an adult I am actually writing this review to see I cannot believe the insulting way I was treated in this establishment tonight ! We booked and went along as a family of 8 , sons and their partners and the kids (my grandchildren) As soon as we got in there it really was cold and I sat in my coat but the waitress straight away got the owner who kindly put on an electric heater behind us which helped at first but sadly because it got busier it was moved and switched off and it soon got that I had to put my coat back on which isn’t ideal ! All our food came out and it looked promising the quality of the food to be fair looked great , my seven year old grandson ordered the adult cod and chips and ate it all he was pleased , however I was sat waiting for ten minutes and my food did not come out , I was just about to go up and ask where it was but the waitress beat me to it and apologised and said the kitchen had not received the order abd it wouldn’t be long which it wasn’t only another ten minutes but by that time the majority of our party was nearly finished but we just got on with it . To be fair my mussels were lovely and plenty of them ! What happened next can only in my opinion be described as over the top and almost intimidating bullying behaviour ! I had asked for the two pints to come off the bill which they did not , we had only ordered 3,separate scoops of ice cream but was charged for 3x3 scoops , and I just said to the gentleman at the bar could he help and go through with the bill with me as I was trying to point to the bill and explain where I felt the errors were, I was nit aggressive or rude in anyway (I’ve done that job for many years and know how hard work it is and know how customers can sometimes be) but straight away the guy had a go in his second sentence to me told me not to talk to him in that way and but to raise my voice or point at him , he was very rude and I will say I found him very intimidating I really did ! I tried to say I was not being that way but he was not having it , I apologised and said I’m sorry if I’ve come across that way and three times said sorry asked if we could move on and start again to which he says yes , however when I’m explaining the bill again he just said I’m the bar manager my dad owns the pub I can’t sort it I’ll get your waitress over and she will go through it with you , at this point there’s three lads sat next to where I’m stood and when the bar manager has gone over to speak to the waitress I asked him please tell me was I rude and did you see me pointing and he said not at all I thought your were explaining nicely and no you also never pointed , so I was very confused at this point ! Bar manager comes back and then says the waitress does not want to talk to you as you’ve been awful to her all night and finds you rude so she’s not coming over ! I felt sick I really did I do not know why she would say anything like that , so I was almost in tears because he was at this point loving the power trip of trying to intimidate me but the saving grace was when his dad came over and took me to the side of the bar The dad also told me that the waitress that served us and whom we’d apparently really upset with the behaviour was actually bar managers fiancée and I do think that’s why he went so hard at myself I feel he needs to separate personal from work and be professional and get some training in customer services or go and work away from the front of house ! Sorry to you the owner for this but your bar manager son and your front of house team are ruining it for your customers, yourself and your kitchen team who did provide us with nice food I have had to cut this review short because too many words but the full review is also on Tripadvisor and guru sorry if this one is a bit all over but hopefully if you read this you won’t get caught out like we all did but never again will we or anyone we know set foot in here again ! To be fair my mussels were lovely and plenty of them ! We ordered more drinks but they took over half an hour to come , we were asked if we wanted deserts and was shown the desert menu , to which I did ask was there but a child’s desert menu , there was not so the children ordered of the menu , I just wondered if they offered a mains kids menu was there but a desert one to give the children different options but no problem we went with whatever they wanted We had another 30 minutes wait and one if the deserts came out wrong with ice cream rather than cream which they changed and ate that point we also ordered two final pints which in the end after waiting a further 29 minutes I asked them for the bill and to remove the drinks of the bill as we were wanting to go as at this time now it was really cold and we just wanted to get home in the warmth What happened next can only in my opinion be described as over the top and almost intimidating bullying behaviour ! I had asked for the two points to come off the bill which they did not , we had only ordered 3,separate scoops of ice cream but was charged for 3x3 scoops , and I just said to the gentleman at the bar could he help and go through with the bill with me as I was trying to point to the bill and explain where I felt the errors were, I was nit aggressive or rude in anyway (I’ve done that job for many years and know how hard work it is and know how customers can sometimes be) but straight away the guy had a go in his second sentence to me told me not to talk to him in that way and but to raise my voice or point at him , he was very rude and I will say I found him very intimidating I really did ! Bar manager comes back and then says the waitress does not want to talk to you as you’ve been awful to her all night and finds you rude so she’s not coming over ! I felt sick I really did I do not know why she would say anything like that , so I was almost in tears because he was at this point loving the power trip of trying to intimidate me but the saving grace was when his dad came over and took me to the side of the bar I must admit at this point I was struggling to get my point across correctly because I was so upset and said forget it I’ll just pay the bill and go but he wanted to sort it best he could do I explained as best I could and he also looked at the bill and saw another small annonommly and change the bill there and then ! I then said could I ask the waitress what I had done to her for her to feel the way she did as if I’d spoke anything to offend or upset her I wanted to apologise, as I’ve said before I’ve worked many years in this trade and it’s it nice sometimes and I would not want to make her shift unpleasant in anyway She proceeded to tell me I was annoyed at the delay in my order not coming but I was not although I had every right to because the main people had almost finished their food , i apparently was rude over the desert being wrong which it wasn’t me that said it was wrong I just told my daughter that the granddaughter had ordered cream and not ice cream , they changed it straight away and no drama so god knows what she was on about ! So in summary I did tell the owner I was really upset and felt he was aggressive (son who’s in charge of the bar I’m referring to !) , his dad said it didn’t matter that he was his son and that had no bearing on anything, maybe his son should be told that ! He did say that aggressive was too strong of a word but to he honest I don’t think so he pounced on mr straight away and did not have any decorum or people /customer service skills at all ! The dad also told me that the waitress that served us and whom we’d apparently really upset with the behaviour was actually bar managers fiancée and I do think that’s why he went so hard at myself ! So sadly NO we will never be back ! I will ensure I tell everyone I can to stay away ! I will say the kitchen team did a great job of our food not one complaint on that front ! Your front of house team lets you down so much ! Your drink service is appalling, half an hour for a round of drinks with no explanation is poor ! Staff stood talking at the bar area whilst we were waiting for drinks to cone out is not a good luck ! The coldness of the venue was totally unacceptable and uncomfortable , I know it’s very cold everywhere at the moment but this does look like it’s a common occurrence inside of the venue! Finally after talking with the waitress infront of the owner he did agree that her complaint or issues with what she was saying were not valid but I still apologised to her because I would not want to think I’d upset a young girl at all ! However it’s okay for me as an older lady to be upset and got at by an obnoxious bar manager that in the end couldn’t even deal with or help to sort the situation in anyway ! I feel he needs to separate personal from work and be professional and get some training in customer services or go and work away from the front of house ! I’ve never in all my experience been treated or even had any experience like this ever before! Finally my two sons were with me and for clarity I did not let them know what was going on or use the my sons card as he used my dads card he owns the pub , I don’t care who he was because if my sons had seen me almost crying and shaking at the bar I do know it would of escalated! So please in future remember it does not matter who you are or who owns the pub what matters is that you treat everyone how you would like to be treated back then the time in work will be pleasent not just for you but for your staff and more importantly your customers who by the way help keep you in the job ! I will be posting this everywhere because I truly feel people need to know what they are going to be subjected to if they dare question anything in your pub ! Sorry to you the owner for this but your bar manager son and your front of house team are ruining it for your customers, yourself and your kitchen team who did provide us with nice food !

My family and I have been loyal patrons of the Maypole for years, but since it changed ownership, I can confidently say that we won't be returning. I rarely leave negative feedback, but after our recent experience, I feel compelled to warn others. A family member of mine ordered a dish that, when it finally arrived, looked like a frozen meal deal. It was tiny and nowhere near the standard we're used to from this place. Naturally, she mentioned that it didn’t look right. Instead of fixing the issue, what happened next was straight out of a bad sitcom. The new owner, Vas (or however you spell it), decided to take this poor woman—mind you, a lady in her fifties—into a side room, away from everyone else. There, he proceeded to tell her that her opinion was basically wrong because -his- wife "likes it," so she should like it too. He continued to berate her in private, insisting that she's a trouble maker and barred her from the Maypole. Oh, and to add to the absurdity, he brought the plate of food in with him and performed some kind of amateur theatrics, tearing apart the food and eating it in front of her, declaring, "See? It's fine. There's nothing wrong with it." Honestly, it was unhinged behavior. But it didn’t stop there. When she returned to the bar, Vas wasn’t done. He continued to interrogate her, even dragging her husband into it by asking, "Is she like this because you’ve fallen out?" Excuse me? Since when is it acceptable for an owner to dive into someone’s personal life because they didn't like the standard of food? The whole interaction was disturbing, violating, and completely unprofessional. You do not humiliate a paying customer, let alone drag them into a private room to do it. To top it all off, the prices have gone up while the portion sizes and quality have nosedived. At this rate, they’re going to lose every last customer. So, Vas, if you're reading this, here's a bit of unsolicited feedback for you: Learn how to handle customer criticism, or brace yourself for more reviews like mine. And if you’re thinking about barring me—by all means, go ahead. You’d be doing me a favour.

Recent change of ownership: oh dear, what has happened? We’ve regularly come for lunch at the Maypole 2-3 times every month over the last 5+ years and have always enjoyed the food and efficient service. However, today was so disappointing. We were a table of 6 and had ordered by 1 pm but were not served our meals until 1:50 pm. The pub wasn’t even busy which is very unusual for a Saturday. The steak in the baguettes was cold, as were the lamb chops, fatty with congealed gravy. Chips were pale and undercooked. Service was slow with noticeably fewer people working there (new staff). There was confusion over what we had ordered with plates having to be taken back to the kitchen. When it came to paying, the card machine now asks if you want to add a 10%, 15% or 25% tip. Cheeky. Maybe this is teething troubles but today was such a letdown. The lower dining room was empty – it’s usually full. Perhaps people have already voted with their feet.

Beautiful carvery! What I love about the Maypole is that they let you order a child's size. Not many places allow an adult to have the child's size, which is plenty big enough if you've had bariatric surgery. The food is delicious here, always hot and plenty of choice. Everyone who works there is happy and welcoming. It's always clean and tables cleared quickly. And such a great atmosphere! Best of all, they allow dogs!! Super place to pop in for a meal or a drink. They also have a lovely beer garden. There are plenty of meal options as they cater for vegans, vegetarians, and can adapt to suit when they can. Wonderful establishment, which I highly recommend 👌 👍

We visited the Maypole in this evening for a birthday meal, it seemed to be only one of a few open on a Monday Bank Holiday! Well we were glad that we came here. The food was absolute top tier! The Maypole stack was whopping, and neither of the three of us who had it could finish it. My mum had the lamb rump which was succulent and fell apart. My dad had the gammon which he loved. We shared one of their sharing platters between the five of us, enough for all of us to have 2 or 3 pieces each. Lovely village pub aesthetic, great service, we will definetly be returning, and it'll be added to my top UK restaurants list!

Had the flat mushroom with Stilton starter, which was drenched in oil... pressed on it, and oil was oozing out. Lasagne was bitter and not very pleasant to eat. Garlic bread was solid. Venison pie was stewed, and there was no taste whatsoever. I could keep listing things...! Mentioned it to the girl at the bar when paying who was very apologetic. She attempted to get a manager who came over and went, "What's the problem?" Confrontation is not our thing, so we just said we'd like to pay our bill and go, please. Paid full price for an awful meal, and now sat at home feeling not very well at all. Definitely won't be going back to The Maypole Inn.

Cold pub so had to keep coats on. The meals were warm not hot, as if they had been sat there for ages before being served. Red wine tasted like it had been open a few days. Waitress was so shy she dumped the food on the table & almost ran away. We were with an elderly couple who were taking us out for a treat so felt bad complaining so we just decided we won’t go here again. It’s a real shame as the bill came to £120 & it certainly was not worth it.

The pub is in a lovely location and has lots of outdoor seating. A roaring log fire. Staff that were friendly. Unfortunately, there was no cans, then no Diet Coke, then the o2 machine was not carbonating the drinks. I felt so sorry for the waiting staff who had to keep coming back and saying sorry. The food was average, but this was my daughter’s birthday meal and it got frustrating.

I eat here quite often and find the meals are good. However having said that I often wonder if all chefs go to the same training school when it comes to chips and salads. I am getting used to it and when I go for a meal with chips and veg I request gravy be supplied separately so the chips aren't swimming in it. At another pub I didn't realise the chef likes to pile on the salt for the chips which I don't like. This month I thought I would have a change and try the hunters chicken served with salad & homemade chips. I knew the chips would be good but didn't realise there would be a sauce for chicken resulting in the chips and salad to be swimming in it. Must remind myself in future to request sauce or gravy to be kept separate and also no salt.

We booked for a family Christmas meal, unfortunately it was not up to there usual standard. Our booking was mixed up with someone else's so we had to wait untill that was sorted before we could sit at our table. The steaks were lovely. No complaints at all. The Christmas meals were not great, cold gravy, meat obviously taken out of a packet rather than sliced off fresh, roast patatoes that you could crack your teeth on. Burnt Yorkshire puddings, very dissapointed in the Christmas Dinners.

The new Landlords at the Maypole Inn who took over in November 2017, have really revived this great village pub. The ales are well kept and the food is excellent. The premises are spotless and the service is friendly and prompt. Highly recommended 😊(It is now July 2018 and the Maypole is getting better and better. New decor is great and lots of nice little things here to be happy with. Food continues to be great) UPDATE again at 6th Dec 2023 - Same team runs the Maypole to the same high standards. Great pub grub, good ales, great service.

Extremely disappointed by our trip to the maypole today.. I acknowledge that it was busy but after a long wait to be seated our table wasn’t laid and the waitress I believe to be called Lucy almost threw our cutlery into the middle of the table as we sat down. Asked if we knew what we were drinking before we had even sat. Carvery - meat was lovely the rest was a complete let down. The potatoes were so hard you couldn’t cut them let alone eat them! High chairs were left in the middle of the room.. Complete chaos. We were going to Jane desert but couldn’t wait to get out of there.

Was told how good the Sunday Carvery is but it was only average. The meats were perfectly cooked but I had difficulty cutting through the roast potatoes. Vegetables overcooked and the Apple Pie was just a soggy open apple tart. Can't anybody actually make pastry anymore? The decor in the Elmhurst was awful and full of dogs. Staff were very professional and friendly.

Party booking of 14 for lunch today. They were very busy and we had to wait quite a while for our meals. However the staff were really nice and the food was enjoyable, especially as all meals were from the £10 specials menu.

Popped in for a quick bite to eat and waited at the entrance for someone to seat us. No problem with that except the lady on front of house was happily petting a customers dog rather than keeping her eye out for customers. Eventually seated and ordered. Mine arrived but was burnt. I didn't make a fuss because the filling was alright. Asked for another pint for my husband but after taking ages the waitress advised that his choice was no longer available. We decided to finish and leave without a second drink. On leaving I mentioned the burnt pie and immediately offered money off so I expect they were aware of the burnt offering and served it anyway. Pros, nice friendly waitresses and offered compensation Cons, no atmosphere and should not have bought out burnt food Come on Maypole you can do better than that.

A very disappointing end to a mediocre meal. We were asked to vacate our table for another group of people, before everyone (there was 6 of us) had been served their puddings and we would have liked a coffee afterwards. We were told that we had been late for our booking, which was not true, we were kept waiting by slow service. We will not be returning!

Perfectly nice laid back experience. Food was good although not extraordinary. Service was intermittent though everyone was very lovely. The styling was overwhelming, calm down on the chandeliers and haughty portraits…
