Asked for a bottle of Australian Chardonnay and a French Organic wine was served. The wrong meal was served, got a main course salad which was starter sized, missing roasted sweet potato, which was the star of the meal, no dressing, awful. £159 for 5 people - rip off. Wanted £20 tip which they didn't get. Service was slow and they hurried us off the table at 4pm, as if they had someone else wanting our table!!

One of my favourite places to eat...lovely food, great staff & amazing surroundings! Eat here regularly, but disappointed on our last visit. I am aware that 'dogs' are allowed in the pub. However, I do not feel it is fair on the diners who are seated in the actual 'restaurant' part of the pub, to allow dogs in there. There is an outside (covered) tabled area, where you can eat, as well as the 'pub' part (with tables). I am an animal lover, but did not appreciate being sat close to a table of 4 diners (with 3 dogs) in the restaurant itself. I feel that the actual restaurant area, should be kept 'dog free', for those diners, who do not wish to 'dine with dogs'.

If you are a single female looking for a nice welcome and a suitable lunch menu DO NOT bother going here. All I needed was something simple and a coffee. They do not cater for this. Staff were rude and I left feeling very disheartened and upset.

The pub is in a beautiful setting but sadly they didn't offer breakfast or brunch. Even a pastry or croissant would have been nice but at 10.45am all they offered was drinks and crisps. That was very disapppointing. I'm sure they'd get in a lot of customers if they offered a light breakfast menu. (Interestingly, the staff were about to sit down to a cooked breakfast by the look of things!)

This is one of our favourite pubs, situated on a delightful spot by the River Test. Unfortunately yesterday's visit has really put us off a return meal there. The kitchen cannot really cope with the number of tables and the food we had was not up to standard. We waited about 40 minutes for our main course. The Prix Fixe menu sounded good until we found out what main you got. One choice was a reduced size fish and chips. The Sri Lanka curry that we opted for was a very bland dish, small and mainly consisting of butternut squash. The curry sauce had no substance or aromatic flavour, very disappointing. However the dessert was nice, a lemon flan. The food had been poor value, and an a la carte main would have been a better choice. But then the bill was presented without the Prix Fixe discount. Luckily we spotted this but only after we had paid. They did correct it and refunded the difference. It is a shame that such a lovely pub us now performing below previous standards.

Our new favourite place! We live about 25 minutes drive away but this is now our ‘go to’. EXCEPTIONAL service. Each and every one of the waiting staff could not have been more helpful, charming and obliging. You really feel like you are a special guest and that your visit and experience really matters to them. I honestly think the way the staff treat their customers makes this beautiful pub by the river such a special place. Dog friendly, child friendly… just friendly really! Food is very very good, fantastic wine list and prices reasonable. In the summer, ask for a table by the river, best place to eat out in Hampshire!

Recently visited for a late afternoon drink with my family, whilst waiting for our drinks a family on an adjacent table brought to the attention of a member of staff that there was a large amount of dog excrement on the grass next to their table, the member of staff took a look & walked off. After some time & with nobody returning to clear it up the family moved to another table, a little later three guys visited the table & who all nearly trod in it. As we left, some 45 minutes later I thought that I would bring the situation to who I thought was the manager’s attention, wow what a reaction…. He was verbally very loud In front of other customers & I was accused of being very rood for walking off after informing him of the situation with him stating that this was the first time the issue had been brought to his attention. May I suggest…. 1. Ensure that your staff report all issues/complaints to you immediately so that you can manage/rectify the situation efficiently. 2. If you are going to be a dog friendly establishment then ensure that regular checks are carried out for dog excrement on the premises & ensure it is cleared up immediately. Oh & another thing, please don’t have a pop at the messenger..!!

Have been many years before. Won’t be back. Great venue but lacks atmosphere. The staff don’t have time to interact with you. A lot of staff, a lot of tables some not in the best location. We asked to move twice. First table in direct sunlight (very hot). Second fine until the table next to us was used. Then people (staff with trays of food/drinks) had to turn sideways to get past. (I am a normal size person and so was the gentleman sat at the other table). Moved again before an accident happened. was seated by the stairs!! Food - very dry over cooked fries dry peas but fish piping hot and tasty. Others half’s meal - burger tepid.

We came out for a family meal , the service was quick and our host (Rosie) was friendly efficient and had a smile for every table. Big compliments to the chef and kitchen team, lovely well balanced menu, choices for everyone and came out quickly on a busy night with a private function as well. This stunningly beautiful establishment is so well known and so obviously highly regarded by its many patrons, that it ill behoves me to be so presumptuous as to offer a critique of my own..as, from what I have experienced this past week, its fame & reputation so clearly still precedes it..! So I will merely pen another of my myriad Tripadvisor reviews by way of a 'thank you' to all the staff for a really wonderful lunch-time experience. Sad to say it is well over 10 years since I last visited the Mayfly..and something like 20 years before that, (bad dog!), but in truth its very rural location is somewhat off 'my manor' and not really being much of a lunch-time wallah, it has taken all of this time for me to revisit this quite extraordinary 'pub' (though the word pub does it an injustice)... ..and this came about purely as some friends on the other side of Salisbury suggested a meet-up and they, thankfully spotted that the Mayfly was almost equidistant between us, so they kindly made the booking. Now I must admit to a very slight trepidation ahead of the meet as, on my last visit, so popular was this watering hole that, with a tiny car-park, finding a place to slot my car in was something akin to a military operation.. so a booking was made for noon in an attempt to 'beat the crowd'..and I even consulted Google maps to see if there were alternatives..and saw from the air what looked to be a small farmyard next door..and thought "that would be great place to park, if only it were allowed.."! However after a most enjoyable drive to the Mayfly (from 'my side') along country roads turning into leaf, I pulled into their 'small car park'... to find it had morphed into something twice the size..and seems the yard I saw from the air is now actually part of the Mayfly's huge car park..result!!....and great start to my lunchtime. Duly awaiting the arrival of my friends in the now enhanced car-park,we then wandered in over the small bridge, (as I recalled), to further remind myself of the large outside dining area right on the River Test..in the badly needed sunshine it looked fabulous...but it not being quite warm enough yet to sit outside, I was glad my pals had booked an inside table..and entering through a small door my eyes were immediately greeted with the most beautiful looking country pub. Sad to say I didn't recall any of this this from my visit all those years ago,(as I had then been out on the terrace), but having American friends, I just know they would have thought they'd died and gone to heaven to see this 'English vista', so fascinating & well appointed was this low beamed, inner sanctum, festooned with fishing and hunting paraphanlia..an absolute joy...(and on a cold winter's day with log fires burning, it must be just sublime!) Thankfully.. at this relatively early hour we nearly had the place to ourselves..so, shown to an attractively dressed table we were able to swiftly order our drinks.. my 'go-to drink' when driving is the superb Zero Alcohol Guinness..the nearest thing you could imagine to the alcoholic version. But recent ruby tournaments had sadly drained Guinness-Central of stock across the UK..thanks guys.. so I opted for a non-alcoholic Peroni..and that was actually delicious..the non alcoholic beers being so much tastier these days..mercifully! We were then proffered menus and were duly waited on by several superb & very low key, but ultra-professional staff and I was delighted to see battered haddock on the menu, (battered fish is always my 'test meal' at a new restaurant or pub I am visiting) and I'm glad I made that choice as it was just perfect..: beautiful white soft fish within a perfect batter, chips done to a 'T' and a mint pea 'mush' with a most enjoyable after tang..I was absolutely delighted with my meal..and as for large piece of fish itself... Holy Moly! I don't usually have much of an appetite at mid-day, it has to be said, and wondered how I could do justice to this terrific platter set before me..but it went down a treat and was so top notch that I literally left not a crumb on my plate..I noticed that companions also enjoyed their beautifully presented meals as well. Our couple of hours just sped by and our meet-up couldn't have been in a more attractive location, especially with the wonderful service we received from, as I say, a low key waiting staff..who were always there to check on us, but barely noticeable or intrusive..just perfect!.. I am so glad we picked noon for our table booking, for when we regrettably stood up to leave I was suddenly aware the inside had filled up considerably, but it was the outside terrace that was the most surprising... for, it having warmed up noticeably, it was packed to the gunnels...and on a Wednesday lunchtime too.. .which speaks to the popularity of this quite amazing pub & eaterie..! How the staff managed to effectively cope with, and patiently serve, so many guests is a poser, but they apparently do... and to my eyes run a very efficient and most impressively well-oiled machine. I have to say this was one of my most enjoyable lunch-time meet-ups in many a long year...so a massive 'thank you' to everybody working so hard at the Mayfly to ensure my friends & I had a fabulous experience..and I promise not to leave it another 10 tears before I come back..! Dang..! I promised at the outset not to write a critique here..but appears I did just that..seems I can't quite leave my very enjoyable years as a travel presenter & writer behind me..but then again, I feel The Mayfly deserves all the terrific compliments & garlands that it obviously receives..including my wee homage...and so thanks again for a wonderful visit! 👍

I took my daughter for dinner at the Mayfly, which is a beautiful location right by the river. Our booking was taken over the phone and we arrived 2hrs before closing time. We were welcomed and seated quickly. It was quite a hot day, warm evening but they had no salad mains (only side salad - tomato and onion) so the only vegetarian option left available was a nut roast which we both ordered. The dinner arrived but it was cold, not one item on the plate was hot, the Yorkshire pudding was burnt on the outside and uncooked thick dough on the inside. I find it really embarrassing to complain about food, especially when you are surrounded by other diners. I mentioned the cold dinner to the greeter (who was very helpful and polite) and he apologised and took the food away and offered another option. My daughter went with potato gnocchi and I said I'd just have a salad (as I remember seeing side salad on the menu). The meals arrived and initially were very tasty, they had made a beetroot and apple salad which was lovely but not expected. My daughter's gnocchi was very salty but as we were both very hungry we ate both. The bill came and they were trying to charge me for a pork salad which was weird as 1) I'm vegetarian and 2) I didn't order or have pork salad. I mentioned it and the waitress was a bit shirty. She reduced the cost but it was still more than advertised on the menu considering THEY chose the salad type (which was different from the side salad on the menu). I wouldn't go back for food.

We came here for a business meal with our large team. It was the first time that I have come here. Arriving here, the car park is well laid out and teases you as you step over the bridge and see the river. The surroundings are stunning and the establishment maximises this to its full potential. We had a large group, arriving at different times and with a few last minute additions. The majority placed their dining options in advance, but there were no issues with any last minute requests. All the food arrived at the same time. The waiting staff knew the names associated with each dish and the front of house was well organised and very professional. The food was well cooked, delicious and ample in portion size. A superb dining experience!

The Mayfly is in a great location and therefore attracts lots of customers, perhaps taking bookings from more than they can cope with. We had booked a table for 7 at 1pm, we were advised that we would have the table for 2 hours. There was a long wait on the food, which wasn't served until 2pm, by the time we had finished desserts it was well after 3pm, fortunately, we weren't asked to move. However, the standard of the food was very good, everyone enjoyed it.

I have read some of the previous comments and after our visit must say there is only one thing i would correct as a manager of the pub. Having been in the pub business i would have two bar staff on during busy times and maybe a third person trained up from another area to help if more hands are needed on occasions. Our visit was lovely with staff doing a great job and very helpful. The setting is wonderful even in the rain! Come on summer :) Don't agree with comments about food prices, i'm afriad people need to realise the days of cheap food have gone, there are so many other cost rapped up in your £18 meal. We have already agreed to bring our family back when they come over.

Dreadful bar service as usual, queue went out of the door. The place was packed outside and only one person serving at the bar the whole time. At least six other staff about not particularly busy and nobody jumped on to help. £19 for a cider and a house wine. Horrified to see the tiny portions of chips going by in snazzy copper cups, when we looked they were charging £5.50 each!!! Food looked nice but not amazing for the prices charged. The river setting is lovely on a sunny day but boy are they cashing on it and getting away with poor service and extortionate prices.

We were sat right by the kitchen so we could see everything pretty much that was going on. We went there for a couple of drinks thinking that we would possibly eat. But after seeing the way the kitchen staff were around food we decided otherwise. A cook scratching his face constantly and then putting his hands in a frozen bag of chips put us off. There didn't seem much hygiene going on. Also for the prices they charge, cant they cut their own chips? Anyway the beer was ok. I would not go there to eat, but drink is ok.

We hadn’t booked, but the excellent friendly staff found us a table, and made us very welcome. Beautiful renovations and restoration carried out on this pub/restaurant, it’s extremely cosy on a cold autumn evening with the lights aglow, and the menu has something for everyone. Even though it was busy, our meals arrived in an acceptable time, were hot and delicious, couldn’t fault it at all, both cleared our considerable sized portions completely. Recently stopped for a drink as I was passing by. The pub is in a lovely riverside location and we took our drinks to the marquee to make the most of the view and to watch the ducks. Unfortunately the ducks weren’t the only wildlife we saw. As we sat there a rat ran around in my peripheral and we had to move inside. From our new table we spotted it had friends! Any consideration that we would stay for food was quickly extinguished and we hurriedly finished our drinks and left. I’m glad we did as on the way back to the car park we encountered yet more rats and saw them running in through an open door. I can only hope that wasn’t the kitchen!

This place has gone downhill massively. I'm not sure I would feed my dog what they're now serving. It has gone from lovely local produce, roast dinners, and good food....to some of the worst generic cafe food I've eaten, still at the same premium prices.
