We had heard that the pub had re-opened so visited for lunch. Really friendly staff. Lovely atmosphere. Very dog friendly….Bertie loved the seemingly endless supply of dog biscuits! The food was tradition pub grub. I thoroughly enjoyed the seafood ploughman’s and my other half rated his fish and chips as as good as he’s had. We’ll be back.

Menu uninspiring. Looks like the place needs doing up. Waited half an hour for food in a restaurant with only 2 other tables occupied, and one of the orders was for an uncooked item-seafood ploughman's. Came with cheap partbake baguette. The other item ordered was a burger which was tiny, maybe a 2 ounce? Not sure what has happened. They used to have meat supplied by Robinsons butchers. I can't say I would recommend or return. Disappointing. Should have a reduced menu done well if you are struggling with costs.

Unwelcoming. Food was so dire, all of us left at least half the meal. I left 3/4. Beer was cloudy, and didn’t finish it. Such a shame as it used to be a great place to visit.

The White Lion has recently reopened under new management. On arrival you are sure to receive a warm welcome. The food is excellent with a good variety to choose from and won’t hit your pocket as hard as many other pubs in the area. I would highly recommend a visit.

We popped in recently for a quick drink having heard that this pub was open again. The pub was really smokey (the open fire had had a problem for a few days which was still unfixed). The pub was really cold. A lot of the furniture was missing so it lacked a cosy atmosphere. The white wine was acidic. They poured me another, which was just as bad so we left. Huge room for improvement and such a shame this place has gone downhill so much.

We have been using the White Lion for Sunday lunches for a number of years now and were due to eat there this Friday which was a change from our normal day. Have now discovered that the people running the pub are retiring. We shall miss the excellent service, hearty meals, ales and drinks in general. Such a shame the people are retiring but we wish them all the very best for the future and trust the new owners will continue the tradition. Kind regards Philip Hill and the ex-Weymouth crew

My partner and I were driving back from Winchester today and decided to stop off for a quick lunch. From start to finish it was a very pleasant experience. The landlady was friendly, helpful and charming. The food, although it was just a light lunch, was tasty, well presented and very good value. Plus my beer was excellent. They are not trying to pretend they are a 3 star Michelin gastro pub but more like pubs used to be prior to CV19. We need more places like this. We can definitely recommend The White Lion if you are in the area. If you aren't then make a detour.

What a lovely pub/restaurant with outstanding landlady and staff/colleagues, just superb. Excellent well kept real ale and a great ambience. Unfortunately one of our group had left his car keys (plonker) at the previous overnight stop and the land lady very kindly gave him a lift to Stockbridge to get them even though it was a very busy Sunday lunchtime in the pub, what a star and thank you. We plan to stay there later in the year.

We sat in the back garden of this very quaint village pub for lunch - first time there. They have a normal pub menu and a Tapas menu. We like a bit of tapas in Spain and made the terrible mistake of ordering it here. It all appeared within three minutes of ordering - the first warning sign. Meatballs were uncooked in the centre so we sent them back. The same meatballs came out after further heat was applied and were inedible. The king prawns in garlic were like solid lumps of hard cheese. The calamari rings were also solid. The butternut pate was cold but ok. All in all a grim experience and no sense that the owners gave a hell that they had served up under cooked and over cooked food. Grim.

Proper little country pub with good parking and a nice range of well kept ales. We were here to cheer on our daughter as it marks the halfway stage on the 2018 Testway Ultra 40 mile run. The staff were very welcoming and polite. The food arrived promptly and was very good home made selection. My wife had some excellent faggots and I had the game pie. They had a range of 9 pies, as well as a steak & fish, all reasonably priced. Quite a few locals in there as well as a handful of people waiting for runners. Dog friendly with a large outdoor area that I can imagine being lovely when the better weather gets here.

We had recently driven past the White Lion and seeing all the people dining outside made us think that we should give it a try. After checking out the menu online we made a booking for lunch and the four of us dined there today. We have the following comments - Setting - Think about the most idyllic countryside village and then make it twice as pretty. What a gorgeous pub! Welcome - very warm and friendly . Menu - a most extensive range of pies, traditional Sunday lunch options and an interesting Spanish Tapas selection Ambience - very pleasant and even though it was busy we could easily have a conversation and hear ourselves. Service - swift, efficient, thoughtful and pleasant. Food - lovely quality, generous quantities, arrived piping hot, good presentation (especially the puddings) and with minimal waiting time. So, I will summarise briefly. The staff there understand all about delivering a first class service, providing quality meals and at a very fair price. We whole heartedly recommend this pub and will return again to sample the other menu options and hopefully soon. Well done team White Lion, you made our day memorable and special. Thanks.

We called into the White Lion on our way back to North Devon from London. Wherwell is a couple of miles from the busy A303 and is a charming village situated on the banks of the River Test. If you have tme for a pre lunch walk then turn rightt out of the car park along the road for about 400 yards and you can then walk across the Test on a series of footbridges that lead to delightful watermeadows.I would advise to book as the restaurant was quite busy. The pub specialises in pie's but we chose a traditional Sunday Lunch which was excellent as was the service.

We managed to book a table on the day of eating (Sunday Lunch), last table available. We were seated, menus offered and orders taken swiftly. The food came out in a similar fashion. I had ordered from the specials menu, trio of sausages (pork, sweet chilli and chorizo) with bubble and squeak and beans. An error somewhere as the sausages were pork, chorizo and what tasted like lamb and mint (clearly), this was not a major issue. This was best described as fine but not a mouthful of taste explosion, the bubble and squeak was little more than a fried potato pattie. My wife had the roast beef but no sauces were offered and needed to ask for horseradish.

We arranged to hold a club meeting of twelve here, midweek, and were given use of a separate quiet area with large table. This pub has an excellent selection of pies but I chose the faggots and mash and I would assess the faggots as the best I have eaten. So often at home we eaten Brain's ( the brand that is!) and the thick gravy makes them very tasty. These were, however on a totally different level, absolutely full of flavour, bought from a local butcher's and I must make a visit to the shop in Stockbridge to buy some. The portion was large and I think the others on the table were envious.

My family and I recently did a 25mile charity walk to raise money for HASAG. This was on 29th July, I had asked the Landlady a few weeks previously if we could set up a stand to raise awareness of the charity and also supply the walkers with refreshments, she agreed to this without hesitation. There is a fantastic outside covered area that we were allowed to set up in, this was greatly appreciated by all the team as this was the third stop on the walk and by this time we had walked 17 MILES, we arrived at around 2pm and it had rained continually since around 9.45am so we were soaked. Not only had we been allowed to set up in the lovely covered area , the owners also supplied us with plates of chips which were delicious and extremely appreciated. This isn't the usual sort of review but I believe the staff and the pub deserve a MASSIVE THANK YOU for the way they treated us which greatly helped to make our day a success. The pub itself is a really friendly country pub with a great atmosphere, a lovely outside area which can be enjoyed no matter what the weather. I have not been there for a meal (other than a portionof chips which have always been really good),however my son has been a few times and highly recommends the pies,so I'll definitely give it a try.A great pub to spend an afternoon or evening in a relaxed atmosphere.

Myself and my husband have been regulars at the White Lion for many years. When we got engaged and started to plan our wedding, there was no where else that we wanted to go. From initial planning to the actual day, the team made everything easy for us and it made pre-wedding nerves non existent! Debs and her team were faultless when it came to helping set up, decorating the venue and making our guests feel welcome. We opted for the marquee and outside Lions Dens, which had our chosen tipples ready and waiting inside. The food was perfect and exactly what we wanted for our guests. Nothing was too much trouble for them and the day went so smoothly.I would book the White Lion again in a heartbeat for our next party.

We arranged a family meal for my engagement celebration at the white lion. The decor is lovely and its cosy. The reason for only giving three stars is due to these factors: Pricing is very high for what you get, i think an omelette was £11.Also things didn't taste fresh, for the prices i was hoping for something a bit better than generic pub grub. Lastly we ordered a baileys and chocolate pudding for desert and it was not what you imagine it to be it was full of raisins and sultanas , more like a Christmas pudding. So that was disappointing. But overall its not terrible.

If you like British classic favourites served in a welcoming pub in a picture perfect village; then a meal at the White Lion ticks all the right boxes. My roast beef was the best I have ever tasted. My son was torn between 2 main courses; so he chose 2 puddings so as not to be disappointed again. I was torn between 4 puddings & opted for creme brûlée (seriously good). My granddaughter said the pasta dish on the kids menu was so good that she could eat it all over again. She was persuaded to have pudding (good quality ice cream - Purbeck) instead. The other adults in our party had home made pies that they said were delicious & locally caught fresh fish is served when in season. Well worth repeated visiting.

Welcoming pub and a bonus it is dog friendly although in this occasion mine wasn't with me.Eight of us ordered a variety some lighter meals and some main courses. The food is really nice. My only downside comment would be the that drinks prices are pretty high e.g. one J2O £2.75, as is the burger and chips (£12). We had been walking our dogs with another couple in Stockbridge and following the walk we decided to go for a drink and possibly some lunch. We had been to the white lion before and decided to try our luck. It was Noon on Sunday and so we were not completely hopeful that we would be seated without a booking. We were net with a warm on our arrival into the bar. A quick check ensured our four dogs were also welcome (4 adults and four dogs)!!!! Although numerous "reserved" markers on the tables we were offered a table in the corner, perfect for keeper the dogs out of the way. We took our drinks to the table and were promised menu would follow and very soon they did. Our orders were quickly taken, 3 roast beef and one of their famous pies. The food arrive in a reasonable time, beef, roast potatos and Yorkshire with a generous about of veg served separately in warm dishes. Although more than enough this did not stop us try some sweets. The baileys and orange intrigued us to the point of asking the waitress for more info! It transpires that is was similar to a Christmas pudding. This was chosen by one and she was the envy of the other three of us!!!!The food was excellent.Service spot on. Friendliness of staff faultless. Dog friendly. The food is either cooked on the premises, or supplied by local business (pies and faggots, for example). We had one of each, and they were very good to eat. There are home-made desserts as well. There was a choice of three real ales, and three ciders. If you have a proper lunch, you are treated as being in a restaurant, or if you have bar food, you are in a pub.

We booked for 8 people and chose The White Lion for it's location and the fact they serve food from 12 until 6pm on Sundays. I had also heard good things about the pies. The service was not quick, relaxed perhaps but I got the impression if we had required faster service we could have asked. The bar area was full of happy locals of all ages, a few dogs and there was a welcoming feel to the place. It was however very warm in the restaurant area. The Pies were good, the mash was excellent and the gravy was awesome. I felt extremely full after 2/3 of my main but I persevered, the dessert menu was going to be wasted on me. The kids however tucked in to healthy portions of sticky toffee pudding with cut miniature milk churns full of cream.£130 for 4 adults and 4 kids mains + 4 kids puds and only 2 alcoholic drinks.Disappointing disabled access even though I asked on the phone at the time of booking.

My partner Jackie and I worked up an appetite with a three mile walk around the surrounding Hampshire countryside, including inadvertently wandering into a private garden and sending their dog into a barking frenzy (sorry). We were suitably starving by the time we got to the White Lion for Sunday lunch, and did justice to their succulent roast beef after fighting off the temptation to go for the amazing array of pies on offer that were strictly for those with lion hearted appetites. The food was scrumptious, the staff cheerful and efficient and everything you could wish for from a well run and welcoming country inn. We shall return, so lock your garden gates!

Went here with friends who live nearby and had been recommended to them. Nice location in a small village near Andover. We had a good table for 6 and the staff were really friendly. We all had pies! 15 choices and all sourced locally. They were very good and came with either mash or chips and peas or mushy peas and a jug of gravy each. We all cleared out plates and agreed that the were very good. Would go back and try some of the different flavours. Also great value at £11.95We had a sticky toffee pudding and apple pie for desert both of which were good.Had a really good evening and would go back to try other pies or one of the 8 different sausages offered on the menu. This is how pub food should be - well done

Enjoyed our visit here on a sunny Bank Holiday. Lovely location, with a good sized outdoor seating area. Staff were friendly and food was only a short wait. The local pies were fantastic, and such a wide range available! The lamb and rosemary pie was delicious. Would love to come back another time.

The atmosphere at the pub was relaxed and welcoming. We ere all disappointed with the food. All of us ordered fish and chips and found the batter to be thick and heavy - just not to our liking. The deserts were very disappointing, expensive and poor value for money. A flat swirl of meringue with lots of cream and strawberries is not a pavlova, I think you do need meringue as the main part of the dish.A place to stop as you pass through rather than a regular spot of good food.

We were staying in an Airbnb just down the road from this pub. Popped in for a drink in the afternoon and to look at the menu to possibly eat there that evening. Should have booked a table for supper, but luckily we got the last one as we walked in. The menu consisted of the usual 'pub grub' but also had a selection of pies and sausages. I had the fish and chips, which was delicious and my husband had one of the pies. He couldn't stop raving over how amazing the pastry was and the flavour. Gravy was served on the side, so you could put as much or as little as you wanted on it. If we stayed in the area again we would definitely go back there.

Thought we would give this pub a try as heard the pies were good. I chose the lamb and rosemary with redcurrant on a bed of colcannon. Was disappointed with the pie because the crust was quite hard but the sticky toffee pudding for afters was lovely

We visited this pub for Sunday lunch. Great location in a pretty village. Staff were friendly, but the food was not really up to the standard we were expecting. Starters and deserts were good, but the mains lacked presentation and quality. The roasts were not that appetizing and they seem to fry a lot of their food. As mentioned starters were nice and the deserts were great so am a little dismayed as to why the mains were so disappointing.I hope it is an easy thing they can improve on as the rest of the time spent here was great. Might be worth another try in the future

First visit to the White Lion for a belated Birthday dinner. The food really lovely. We had a range of meals from Mushroom Stroganoff, Venison Sausages, Ham & Eggs and lasagna. All agreed they were lovely, fully of flavour and good quality. Service was very good and friendly. Love the little quiz cards on the table, a nice little touch.

Went there for lunch today, impressed. Although it was busy the service was quick and friendly. I had fillet steak and for once it was actually warm inside - top marks.Only complaint was that the "pepper" sauce didn't have any pepper in it, never the less it was a nice cream sauce. Also the access from the car park is difficult for the infirm - lots of steps.Apart from the above I would highly recommend this place. Remember its a pub, not a restaurant.

Saw the pie menu on the internet so took my wife and a friend for Friday lunch. Had taken the precaution of booking which was just as well because this pub/restaurant is very well used. The pies were all excellent, service and greeting very friendly within a real country pub atmosphere. Will certainly return to try the other pies - certainly plenty to choose from.

The White Lion provided us with first class roasts two Sundays in a row. Food was plentiful and well presented in warm and comfortable surroundings. Desserts were a cut above the sort of off the shelf puddings that some places serve.

We visited Saturday 12th February with some friends. The welcome was warm and friendly, and the pub was busy but had a wonderful atmosphere, something was quite special about it.They specialise in hand made pies, so we endulged. They were delicious and well presented. They had an excellent range of real ales and ciders, it's worth a visit just for them!If you are passing, I would highly recommend you visit. We will be back.

Wherwell is a beautiful village between Winchester and Andover, pretty thatched cottages and the River Test easily accessible. The service at the pub is very good, very attentive and helpful. The pub offers a varied menu but appears to specialise in pies with mushy peas. I ordered a starter of whitebait, followed by the award-winning sausages. The whitebait was coated in thick bread crumbs, was very dry and lacked any taste other than overcooked breadcrumbs. Whatever happened to fish lightly coated in seasoned flour and then gently fried? The sausages were delicious, very meaty and the herbs were perfect. The chips that accompanied them were unfortunately very bland. The chutney tasted of nothing more than sugar, so sweet it was inedible. The onion gravy tasted a little strange, so having been assaulted by the chutney, I decided not to bother with it. I'm unlikely to return. That said, the place is clearly popular, with the bar being crowded with people having a good time. Maybe a place for a walk by the river, followed by a beer?

Decided on the White Horse as it would be nice to take Daisy, our dog and the White Horse is a dog friendly pub. Although it was a late lunch they have different menus for lunch and dinner but chef said he would cook either. Not a surprise as staff are so helpful and friendly. As well as a very comprehensive menu they also have a wide variety of pies and sausages which are well worth trying. Had a very pleasant time in a relaxed atmosphere.

If it hadn't been for the very friendly welcoming staff I would only have given it 3 stars. It is a very old pub with pretty tired decor, toilets etc. but I guess to many if it was spruced up then it would lose something. The menu is good and pretty varied, not many pubs offer mush peas these days, you can have them with a pie. There is a large outside eating area with a marquee, not sure if this remains in the winter.

After a morning trying, in vain, to catch a nice brown trout in a nearby river we repaired to the White Lyon for lunch. And a very good lunch it was too. This is a lovely pub with a landlord and landlady who obviously care about what they serve. We drank very well kept pints of Doombar. Just perfect for the day. Then, rather than choosing from a very good pub menu we chose, from the day's two specials, the pork loin rossini. And very good it was too. The loin sitting on a piece of fried bread that had been spread with pate. Served with roasted new pototoes and a great dish of french beans, carrots and red cabbage. It set us up perfectly for a much more successful afternoon on the river. If you are fishing around Wherwell and fancy a good lunch then this is the perfect place to have it.

Very pleasant staff who were keen to serve. Pub rather old fashioned - swirly carpets !We had meat pie, mash and mushy peas. OK but nothing special. Rather expensive for what it was. One can get really good food now at some of the chains ( Loch Fyne, Cote or Carluccio) - better value and cheaper than we paid. Beautiful Hampshire Village by river Test. Unlikely to go back
