The May Tree in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

Best blue steak I've had in years, compliments to the chef. Will definitely visit next time I am in the area

We had a pleasant breakfast at 'The May Tree', though our 4☆ rating is generous.  The hot buffet breakfast was well maintained & sufficiently hot! While I found the fried eggs satisfactory, others at our table felt they were undercooked & avoided them.  A selection of fruits, yoghurts, croissants, toast, hot beverages, and juices were also offered.  Having booked a table for a vegetarian's birthday, we confirmed beforehand that vegetarian sausages were available, which we were told they were; however, they were disappointingly unavailable upon ordering.  The explanation of high demand was completely unacceptable; good management would ensure that they were well prepared for such occasions, coupled with a shortage of conserves, was disappointing.   Moreover, the unsanitary condition of both restrooms, which were in a disgusting state, further contributed to the 3/5 rating.  To finish off, we were literally hoovered out of the place which we actually found quite humourous. While I would definitely consider returning, improved service would be nice.

I'm a decorator so personally I feel it could use a freshen up on the paint work but other than that it was superb

Lovely meal at The Maytree! Dined here as a party of four a couple of days ago and we all throughly enjoyed our meal. Smothered platter was well cooked and super tasty! Service was attentive and not intrusive, always on hand for another round of drinks and checked back on our meals. Exactly as we expected, seamless from the maytree team! We will be back again :)

What a let down 👎..The chef had to attempts at cooking cooking a serlon steak 🥩. Medium well done. See picture hasn't got a clue... An other order on our table rump steak 🥩 ordered with out chips and side salad 🥗 plus pepper corn sauce.. You guessed pilled with chips no salad or sauce... Then tried to charge 3.00 pounds extra for salad.. Plus 7 portions of pea's stone cold and not cooked... Looking around other tables had same problems.. Please get your act together.. what a let down.

Booked a table for 8.30 as a new years eve treat, we all chose the Xmas set menu, there were a list of items not available but chose different, when we ordered, the waitress told us our stater and main would have to be served together because the kitchen closes at 9 so we were presented with prawn cocktail and steak at the same time, not really a pleasant eating experience. While we were eating, the staff then went round turning the Xmas lights off and continuously making us aware they were closing soon. We don't go out for a family treat much, we'd have been better going for a drive through. On a positive note, the children's meals were very tasty

Decent pub food with good portion, the steaks were nicely cooked and the sides were delicious. The price was a little bit pricey tho. Overall, everything here was alright.

The May Tree is a regular stop for us when visiting family, especially when we're down and back in a day. Food is always great and staff friendly and helpful. Also, well done on this visit for staying open when the car park was closed by a police incident and being kind enough to contact me in advance and let me know the situation.

The food is so good, you couldn't finish everything they have

We love this place, the food is good and prices are great! I don’t know who was on today? A lady who maybe needs to work elsewhere or in another industry? She came over to our table and said, that’s a mess and a half..Plates were piled in the centre like everyone else. The table next to us was told: You’ve had your money’s worth!… The staff are normally amazing! If it’s an issue provide trolleys to place the plates on?….I don't mind!

Reasonable at today's prices, good parking, good service, good busy atmosphere in a pub chain sort of way.

Had a lovely first Christmas festive lunch with the two oldest Grandsons now dining from the adult menu. We really like the ambiance (look for a famous tax case!) as always/usual very pleasant. My wife had the traditional turkey, I had the steak with peppercorn sauce from the festive menu. (Only complaint no mushroom with the steak, very good chips though) Service might have been a little quicker, the restaurant was quite full most of the time tbf but overall a VERY pleasant experience Delighted with our breakfast, took three of the Grandchildren with an age difference of some ten years, all three very content. Discovered the berries were very popular. Noticed the 'orange' juice is now mixed with pineapple/grapefruit juice. Sausages specially good. Thoroughly enjoyed, highly recommended Lovely meal. Very pleasant friendly staff. Always enjoy our meals here

Ordered a large roast , trio of meats which resembled some packet sliced meat out of a supermarket , totalling a small packets worth considering it was supposed to be large , you would get more meat in a meal deal. I then ordered a fruit crumble at £6.50 which came in something the size of a finger bowl with some powder on top they call crumble. If you do stay at the premier inn , save the disappointment and get a taxi to a real restaurant, other times I have been there I tried their stack burger which they like to broadcast as award winning but you would get more value with a children's happy meal burger going by the size of it , and of course made with more bargain basement meat. I have spoken to other people from the nearby estate who liked it for a quick walk down but no longer bother as it's seriously not value for money, child's portion with grown up prices , the only thing cheap there is the produce they are using

Went here for a lunch with my wife. Out starters were amazing we had the loaded potato coujons and garlic and herb mushrooms. The wife said her food was great and tasty only the mash potato tasted more like smash than homemade mash potato . My mixed grill was lovely but small in size considering it is £18. Also my steak was done medium rare rather than medium well. Think the portion sizes could be larger for the price. Other wise lovely pub and

A great place for a decent meal at a fair price. The staff here are a lovely bunch of people who are always happy to do whatever you may ask. I’ve been eating here as I’m staying at the Premier Inn for work during the week. It makes being a long way from home just that little bit easier. 🍺 🥘

Had a fantastic roast there. I made a mess up with booking and booked one less for the party we had. Did try and ring them to change it, but their phone lines are down at the mo. But they were very accommodating for us.

Went for my own birthday meal booked by the in-laws. The food was great and service excellent even at busy time.

I visited for coffee with my elderly father at 1045 in the morning. The place was in a state, with uncleared tables. We were bruskly told we could only sit in the bar area by a rather rude lady who clearly had little to no customer skills. The coffee was of a poor quality , the seats were badly worn and in need of replacing. In fact the whole place is in need of a face lift. On leaving, two elderly people were waiting to be seated, so I said to the waitress/manager, “there are two people waiting”. To which she replied, “can’t you see I’m busy”. As a Cornishman, I’m disappointed that such a place even exists and that the staff (clearly Emmets) have such poor customer interface skills. I would advise to avoid and to frequent a Cornishman run restaurant.

Found myself in Helston this morning with sometime before an early meeting, I was recommended the Maytree by a colleague and boy they were not wrong Chef Robin and waitress Rachel were both amazing. First class food and great service, I will definitely be back.

We had a quick overnight stay and popped in for breakfast - what a treat, all of the staff were friendly, breakfast was good value for money and very tasty, we passed compliments to the chef...nice one Robin!

A great place to eat. We had breakfast on the 20th and 21st of September. The two ladies hosting the breakfasts those two days were friendly, professional and very efficient. It was a pleasure to eat there and I won't hesitate to go back again.

I came here on the off chance with my parents for a meal it was very busy we managed to get a table .we had a great meal and service.

Always a very nice place to go have a meal. Very friendly and attentive staff always happy to help you if required. The food is good at a reasonable price too. Me and the family regularly visit with no issues and have a good 3 course meal. The staff always have a friendly and welcoming demeanor.

Most importantly - clean! Secondly, the food: nothing special, served in the same way as in any other chain store. It was tasty, but... not enough. Portions, however, could have been larger in detail when you order a steak and it is known that at a low cost of the dish where most of the amount is the same meat. Generally a place where - you enter, eat and leave.

Cheap and cheerful food for large family

We visited for the first time yesterday. The staff were helpful and the food was lovely. However, we waited 3/4 of an hour for our food. We weren't told that there would be a long wait. Not school holidays and only about half full. After half an hour I asked a waitress how long our food would be but she never came back. Finally another waitress told us that they were just serving a party of 20 and that ours would be plated up after. I asked if ours was cooked and she said yes, so why didn't they plate ours up first, there were only 2 of us? 🤔

Had a Sunday dinner here it was really good for the price for how much you got, the staff was very helpful, will visit again if I'm back in the area

Been going to this place for ages, shame there's not adequate staff, the poor girls are run ragged, remember this when, you don't get served quick enough, when you don't get your food quick enough, when you're table isn't looking as it should, it's not there fault there understaffed

We had mixed grill and sirloin steak, I must say its tge best food I've had in a long time even my fussy children enjoyed it. Pudding was amazing too.

First of all if I could give the service we received more than 5 stars I most certainly would. We had come to Helston on a family holiday and happened to stumble across this place when trying to google search "family friendly" pubs. We first came to The May Tree on the 12/8/24. It was very busy but one of the staff members managed to squeeze us on a small table near the bar which after traveling for 6 hours we were glad for. Within 5 minutes of us being sat there another member of staff came over and said she had noticed us sat there and had found us a big enough table in the restaurant side. When I tell you the food is incredible, I'm not lying. It's your normal type of pub grub but a bit extra, the pizzas are to DIE FOR and made fresh. The prices are absolutely amazing for Cornwall and actually cheaper than any other pub we had been to around Cornwall (massive bonus because if you've ever been to Cornwall, everything is so expensive compared to home, we are northerners). Because the service and food was so good, we decided to book in straight away for 14/08/24 which was my daughters 13th birthday. She was feeling a bit down about being away for her birthday and again the staff couldn't of done enough for her. Starting from helping me smuggle her birthday cake in, to actually bringing it out and singing happy birthday to her too. They really made the end of her birthday day incredible. We then decided to visit again on the 16/08/24 (yes we became addicted to the place because it was perfect for us) and again there was no change in the service or the quality of food. I want to give a huge shout out to all the waitresses and the supervisor I believe she was. You all went above and beyond for us as a family and I will never forget that. I would suggest booking a table if you are wanting to come here for food because it does get busy quick and I had seen people being turned away because they couldn't get them a table. I promise you won't be disappointed. 10/10 from us and we will be back next year.

Waited an hour for a burger before asking where it was. Food brought out and no apology for the wait. Food was average and tables are sticky. Worth travelling elsewhere if possible.

Very friendly and helpful staff. Good range of meals and drinks at sensible prices. And if you're staying in the Premier Inn next door, The Maytree is the default place to go to for food and/or a drink.And between 12noon and 18.00 ( Mon to ) Fri there's a great deal : 2 × Mains for £11.99. We had Cheese Pie with chips & peas. Really tasty and great value for money. Dogs allowed in the bar area ( where you can also eat).Outside seating area next to car park

Average dining experience. Good value for money. However, the inside decor and furniture seriously needs updating and cleaning. Table chairs with fabric are stained and appear dirty. Ventilation could also be better as air becomes very stuffy and humid when very busy.

Lovely food with perfectly welcoming and accommodating staff. Good vegetarian options with a tasty veggie lasagna amongst other options. Somewhat pricey, but worth it for the quality of the food and service.

This was my first visit here.Went for a meal with my husband for our anniversary. It was a bit quiet but was early-ish. Staff where lovely catering for my needs. Food was absolutely brilliant. Came out lovely and hot. Prices where very reasonable and I'll definitely be making a few more visits here

Food was good, service a bit poor. Put some money in the fruit machine as I was waiting for food, won a fair amount but as I hit collect it popped up saying note jammed error. Told the staff to which I was told back that its up to me to call the company that runs the machines to get the money? As I'm in the trade I knew that simply isn't the case however apparently it's not there machines so they made zero effort to help. Thankfully one of the guys behind the bar took pity, and tried switching them on and off, which eventually worked. So unsure why the manager didn't even try to help, however glad it was resolved thanks to the lad at the bar, whole experience left me sour though.

We live locally and the May Tree is close to hand, for that reason we use it for convenience. Unfortunately the establishment is looking very tired, exhausted even. The carpets are in a very poor state, hardly looking as though they have ever seen a vacuum cleaner, and certainly not a carpet cleaner! The upholstery on the chairs is badly stained, and the mock fireplaces, which are a lovely feature, have glass over them that looks as though it’s never been cleaned, full of fingerprints and stains. Looking up, there is the sellotape still stuck to the coving that fixed the Christmas decorations! I wonder exactly what the cleaners do to earn their wages?! It really is a great pity, the staff are very welcoming, attentive and efficient, the food is what you expect in a pub, tasty and hot. The beers are well kept, although rather lacking in some choices. Generally it’s a great facility that is lacking in certain areas, that let it down badly.

Amazing find! We were staying close by and found this online. No booking but they accommodated us at the bar. The bartender was lovely, he went above and beyond with our food and drinks order, a real credit to the restaurant. Every staff member we came into contact with, was happy polite and more than happy to get us anything we requested. We had an allergy with a member of our party, and for once a restaurant that actually made sure that we didn’t end up with any food with said allergen in! I really could not recommend this place enough. We will defiantly come back when we are next in Cornwall. The small things really make a difference and they have got it just right here!

Understaffed, one woman struggling to keep up with the demands of lots of customers. Croissants tasted funny. No orange juice available at breakfast, just some nasty tropical squash. Bacon anaemic. Not highly recommended.

Friendly welcome , shown to our table , we had booked for a table by the window and we got it , we were a table for 3 , we ordered 3 currys and 2 coffees and a J20 for our daughter , the waitress told us about the lunchtime offer, it saved us money on our meal , thank you , tables were all clean and cleared quickly by staff .

Went in for coffee. Staff were hovering but no one approached us .we eventually was told to go to the bar to get served .staff were there and saw me waiting but I had to asked to get served .The lass who did serve me was pleasant. Was going to stay for lunch but didn't bother .

Visited for an evening meal whilst staying at the premier inn next door. Reserved table was ready and waiting for us, and we were quickly attended to by Megan, who was very friendly and welcoming. It was quite busy, but service was excellent and wait time between courses was minimal. Food was great and very reasonably priced. Service from all staff members we encountered could not have been better! Very impressed and will certainly visit again.

I am a regular here as live nearby. Food can be hit and miss depending on chef that is working, I would say 8/10 but mostly good. Sometimes the appear short staffed.

First time visit . Dogs allowed in the bar . From starters to main meal was a bit of a wait , but worth it once it arrived. Staff friendly and helpful.

Superb breakfast, lunch and dinner. Staff are so friendly and add a personal touch especially when staying next door for a few nights. Food is excellent and reasonable even with the super deals they have running. Good range of vegan and vegetarian options. Excellent drinks including draft and cocktails.

The food was tasty and the staff pretty attentive. But unfortunately it took a long time to arrive and when it did it was only warm. Told us they were a chef down in the kitchen but afraid this visit was very disappointing. Well visited once again and afraid to say not alot has changed. Food took a while to come. Buy when it did it was tasty and this time hot enough. Just get the feeling that perhaps they maybe light on staff most of the time. Nice meal and atmosphere. Just don't go if you are in a hurry 🙂

Appalling communication, last orders at 9?, didn't have any mayo, one lady said no to taking orders for pudding and one saying they are. 1 oven down 2 days in a row?. Went for breakfast what a utter nightmare very unorganised.

I attend a Bowel Support Group social at the May Tree today and would like to thank all the staff for their help and support. A very relaxed atmosphere and very considerate service. Well done to you all.

Well been coming here for years just a groupe of 5 having a great time just had 3 course meal Service was excellent until we were told we were noisy only to look around to hear groups behind us shouting absolutely disgusting if you don't want me to have fun and spend my money advise your team to carry on I will spend my fortune somewhere else

Staff always polite, friendly and helpful. A welcoming and stress-free place to eat with an often noisy and active young child - plus really good children's food options. Worth signing up to the membership/loyalty scheme as there are frequent offers.

Am Attached Premier Hotels restaurants go this is a really quite a good one. But you do need to book to guarantee a table.

On the outskirts of Helston and next to the Premier Inn which we were using for a short break, we found The May Tree to be the perfect place to enjoy an evening meal. So much so that we went there on several occasions! There was a wide selection of food and drinks, sensibly priced. The staff were friendly, helpful and accommodating. The floor space is divided into small cozy areas consisting of 4-5 tables, making it easy to talk without having to shout!

Popped in on off chance, sat in bar ordered at the bar. Burger and chips, plus one fish and chips, food okay for quick snack, reasonable value.

I use the maytree quite often, and the main reason I use the May Tree over say wetherspoons is the great family feel, the customer service and the food is great. The staff at the May Tree can't do enough for you, and wait on you hand and foot.

Dropped in for a Sunday Roast excellent value and plenty to eat was really nice. Friendly service from Ellie will be going again soon.
