The Maltsters in Daventry

Very disapointing. We had held a small function here in March '23 and on the sucess of that plan a repeat in March '24 so, knowing it had changed hands in the meantime, we booked a table for just ourselves to check it out. On arrival we found there was no reservation recorded even though it had been made several days earlier. However a table was available by the door into the kitchen. My wife chose two starters -Asparagas tartlet then Prawns with mixed veg. I chose baked camambert then Beef burgignon with chips. The asparagas tartlet was crisp and very dainty with a minimal amount of asparagas. The prawns were inedible having so much pepper in the sauce that my wife, who is normally happy with spicy, peppery food rejected it . We asked th waitress to inform the chef but there was no response from the kitchen. The waitress did offer to get her something else but there was nothing else on the menu that she wanted. The camambert was fine, being a good portion "Le Rustique" soft and runny and well within the sell by date printed on the case. My beef dish was not as flavoursome as I had expected of Burgignon The chips were nicely cloured but had an oily look and no crispness at all. I suspect they had come from the freezer via a dip in warm oil. I normally wolf down all the chips on the plate but a good half went back to the kitchen..We usually like to look at the desert menu but gave it a miss as we had no expectations. I went to the bar to pay. The barman asked if we had enjoyed the meal so I told him it was not to our taste as the prawns were inedible owing to the amount of pepper and that we had sent that message to the chef. He was happy to take the full amount from my credit card. Such a pity when we had had such a good experience here with Lucile in charge 9 months ago. We are still looking for a venue for our function next March.

Open all day, reviews looked great but reality was very different, the food was below average and looked microwaved, the chips were reheated, the garlic prawns were in a watery sauce if you can call it that. Beef bourguignon and mash looked like it was out of a can. Overpriced and run down place

We were staying in the village and it was great to come here. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming and the food was fantastic.

We were lucky enough to be able to book in on Sunday morning for lunch the same day after a walk in Badby Woods, and so glad we did. Really excellent food and nice to get a choice of how the beef was cooked - unusual for a Sunday roast at a pub. Meat arrived cooked perfectly, roast potatoes were incredible, some of the best cauliflower cheese I've ever had. Couldn't have asked for more, will definitely be back!

A fabulous little gem in a beautiful village…. We stayed for bed & breakfast to visit a surprise birthday party for our friend in a nearby village.Our room was immaculate & the staff were so friendly….. We needed a taxi to take us to the party venue & after numerous unsuccessful telephone calls,resorted to asking the landlady,Megan,for recommendations. She went above & beyond to sort our problem out & came up with a solution for us. A wonderful,lovely young lady. Thank you for making our short stay so enjoyable.

Very nice pub barmaid was very pleasant that is were it ends.We ordered a steak panini and chips the chips were very greasy looked like they had been warmed up the so called panini was just a bread roll.Steak was very grisly.We did complain but the chef wasn’t interested didn’t ask what the problem was he didn’t make an appearance.

We used to enjoy eating at the Maltsters but sadly the meal we had recently was poor that it has put us of eating here. We ordered Burger and chips that was literally a burger wacked in a bun with a slice of tomato and a small bucket of chips, no fresh coleslaw or onion rings, it looked unappetising. The Brownie for pudding was that small it looked ridiculous on the plate . The staff were friendly but never asked if we wanted more drinks . We left still hungry and thought what we had was a waste of money.

Lovely pub. The new team are brilliant. Megan, Zach, Evan and Simon are all really friendly. Great customer service. The food is brilliant - the dishes we had were all home made, delicious, and reasonably priced. Nice big garden, dog friendly, and they do a good pub quiz too.

A lovely little place in a very quiet area , rooms are lovely and the owners, Megan and Zachary are too! Great little get away for me and my wife, with our dog, to chill out and relax. Always keen to find authentic village pubs, this is a gem. Sunday lunch was a real treat with super beef, good wine and Taylors beer. Great garden, good service and a knowledgeable chef make it worth a visit. There's lots of Duckegg green branded wine pubs around. Avoid them and support these characterful gems.

I had enquired about booking for my engagement party and had a reply timely about coming back to me with prices. I waited 3 weeks until I emailed again. On reply Lucile was very rude and thought of me as an inconvenience. Lack of respect and decency. I had emailed to say that I thought her reply was rude and her response was ‘ok’ I will not recommend this pub to anyone that is looking at booking an event. Me and my family will not be attending the pub itself due to the pure rudeness of this lady.

Accommodating to my dietary restrictions, meals outstanding, staff friendly, warm and accommodating. Atmosphere lovely, snug fire on the go, clean and overall just lovely! Andy, the Manager, couldn’t have gone out of his way anymore than he did! I travel to meet friends here as a half way point and wouldn’t go anywhere else and they feel the same.

We went here for Sunday Roast best roast ever. Everything was perfect from the potatoes to the cauliflower cheese. Compliments to the chef. Front of house very friendly. We definitely coming back.

Rarely go out and eat a Sunday roast as it’s usually disappointing, however, we had a wonderful lunch today at The Malsters. Roast Beef, Yorkshire Pudding and lovely vegetables including cauliflower cheese. Will definitely return. The staff were all polite, friendly and efficient. We go back here every time we are in Northamptonshire or breaking up a long journey on the M1. It fits my perfect vision of a British country pub: cosy interior, wood fire in winter, well stocked bar with local beers and a really great kitchen. I think it's independent from breweries, you get much more than just the run-of-the-mill brews behind the bar. The menu is small and changes regularly so you know it's all good in-season and fresh. And as highlighted in the header for this review, Sunday lunch is tremendous. The owners and staff are really warm and welcoming. Good function room out the back too. All very recently renovated. The personal touch really comes through.Wish I could make it here for the evenings, seen nice events on the chalk board - open mic, music sometimes, quiz night etc.

Cannot fault this place - landlords are friendly and great fun to be around, and this echos right through to the staff - especially Jack & Bella! Food is delicious and the cocktails are to die for.. even if your favourite isn’t on the menu, they’ll do their best to accommodate. The atmosphere is friendly and cosy, and you can’t beat a good old game of cards!

An idyllic typical country pub on the surface with a bit of a twist.

It's such a wonderful thing that to find a country pub serving the classics and more contemporary food and drinks in a homely setting. Staff are all very friendly and have good knowledge on menu and drinks. Definitely be back again soon.

Popped in based on TA reviews and was not disappointed at all! Lovely place, great atmosphere and the steaks were amazing. Staff really lovely, polite and attentive and the addition of cocktails was really quirky. There needs to be a picture of the steaks (we didn’t remember until we’d almost finished our meals) because the presentation was great. Would definitely visit again.

Me and my husband were staying in the beautiful village of Badby over the Bank Holiday weekend and visited this pub all 4 nights we were there. I have to say this has got to be the most friendly pub we have ever been in. All the staff and the locals were friendly and chatty, and made us feel welcome from the first time we stepped inside their pub. Their food was freshly cooked and delicious, especially the fillet steak and home cooked chips!! Drinks were very good too, tried quite a few of the flavoured gins, and all were made to perfection. I would highly recommend this pub to anyone staying in the area or just passing through - you're sure to get a warm welcome!

First visit to this typical country pub. Nice friendly greeting. Didnt book a table but was offered a table and ordered drinks which were bought to the table together with the menu. Specials board was available although our attention was not drawn to it. Food was served promptly and was excellent. I had the pie of the day which was chicken and leek...lots of tasty chunks of chicken in a white creamy sauce...which was delicious. My partner had a burger which was also excellent. If you are looking for a reasonably priced pub meal then I would definitely recommend The Maltsters. PS..the beer is good too

After a lovely walk in the bluebell woods, we were impressed with the welcoming atmosphere and friendly, attentive and accommodating staff. Well kept beers and cider. Superb, freshly cooked food, beautifully presented. We had fish and chips and double burgers which we all enjoyed but there were other very tempting offerings and we’ll definitely be returning to try them out. Chocolate Brownies were divine. What’s not to like?

Came here for dinner unexpectedly but made room for us anyway. Bartenders were kind, service was really good. Even though I normally do not like the more rowdy pubby scene, in this case it was just fun and homely(maybe just a British thing, but certainly not what I would expect in a Dutch bar-restaurant).

Stopped for lunch with the dog after a walk in the woods to see the Bluebells. We were only customers and barman was very helpful fetching water for the dog and serving drinks at the table. We ordered the specials which was Ciabatta one with fiery chicken and one eith roasted veg. Both with chunky chips. Food came quick and was delicious. Well presented and nicely cooked and very tasty. The vegetarian one had vegetables cooked perfectly with no sloppy bits but not too crunchy either (I'm told!). Chicken came with home made raita dip to help with the fiery sauce although it was more of a tingle as opposed to a burn. Very nice taste. Top up drinks served at table and generally well looked after. Surroundings are lovely too and really nice feel. Not a massive lunch menu to choose from but what we had was lovely. Would recommend to anyone.

Hadn’t been here for a long time but thought we’d visit again and have a spot of Saturday lunch.A lovely, clean pub with smart yet traditional decor. Friendly, passionate staff with good knowledge but I felt the food options were sparse. The homemade pie wouldn’t be ready for another half hour. Hmm.I chose the bacon & onion quiche and my husband the pasta with meatballs both specials at £8.50. We had a long 25minutes plus wait and when the food arrived mine was a very meagre portion of partially burned quiche which wasn’t nice and a large portion of sweet potato chips. I would gladly have paid more money for a lunch that would satisfy my hunger. While we ate, a table was seated beside us and also informed the pie was to be ready in about half an hour(still?) Also, the back door to the pub was open creating a bit of a breeze which is fine when you’re busy staff but not seated on a late March day. Sorry it pains me to say that I won’t rush back. I left hungry.

We didn't mean to stop at the Malsters, but a water main closed the road to Daventry so we gave it a try. It has been a couple of years since I last visited and boy has it improved!! My son said it was the best steak he had had in ages, possibly the best ever (he likes it almost blue) and was juicy and cooked to perfection. I had the haddock which was also moist and covered in lovely crispy batter. Will definetly be going again.

Best fish and chips my wife has ever tasted! I had the steak which was fabulous. The atmosphere was great as was the relaxed music. Staff were very friendly. We are coming back again tomorrow to sample the cocktails and try more of the amazing food!

Absolutely terrible . Waited forever for food. Came eventually and was bland and poor quality. Asked for steak knife as beef was tough with Sunday lunch . Pudding was rubber . Then realised after was overcharged. Very poor quality and would not recommend it .

Four of us arrived at around 2-00 pm and were made very welcome. We ordered lunch and ended up with two gammon egg and chips (the Day's Special) , a cheese-burger and a Nachos. The food was excellent and the chips were superb.

Visited for another quiz night at the Maltsters and couldn't resist trying the special Valentine's menu. The mains were delicious and the chocolate baked Alaska for a sharing dessert was lovely.

We visited for a family meal in the evening. We were given a warm welcome and our prebooked table had the required high chair in place for us. there was a good selection of fantastic food. The staff were very efficient and there was a lovely atmosphere. Well worth a visit.

My daughter and I met up at this rural pub for Sunday lunch. I had the vegetarian roast, and my daughter had the pork. Both dishes were delicious. This is most certainly not your average pub grub! We were given a warm welcome and very attentive service. Thoroughly recommended!

We dropped in for a dessert and a couple of drinks while were out for a drive. Really friendly welcome. The boys behind the bar were really good. Knowledgeable, chatty and willing to let us try tasters of things we weren't familiar with. Because of this I tried the shiraz gin with bitter lemon (as they suggested) and it was lovely.

Visited a couple of weeks ago with a friend! And boy were we glad we did! Bar staff were very friendly and showed us to a table straight away, we started with some very nice cocktails whilst looking at the menu! In the end i thought i would brand out as per the waitresses suggestion and went for one of the specials! Me being the skate wing with caper and prawn butter and my friend playing it safe with the more simple burger and chips, however it certainly was better than the 89p hamburger he is used to :) overall we stayed roughly 2 hours, great food, great atmosphere...clearly a well looked after family pub

It’s the best beef Sunday lunch I’ve ever had the veg the meat the service is 2nd to one go there don’t miss out it’s only expensive if you judge it against a chain pub otherwise just enjoy the experience

called in without a reservation for dinner - place was empty when we got there (we were early) but within ten minutes was crowded and we wouldn't have got a table if we'd arrived then.

Sometimes all world's collide. The company. The weather. The location, The beer, The food. The staff. The result? A crackin' experience. This was the case last Saturday afternoon when friends who live locally suggested we walk a mile or so across the stunning Northants countryside to the Maltsters at Badb(o)y for a spot of lunch on a beautiful warm afternoon. Great choice. Megan was our server and a charming on at that. Well done. The unfiltered citrusy pale ale was nectar and the food really good. Two Chicken Caesar's and chips (triple cooked to perfection) and two Chinese Duck Wraps with Sweet Potato Fried (again, crisp and not bendy nor greasy). Four mains, two large Savvy Bs, one pint and two chips was £60. Not cheap, but on a day like 18 Aug 18, worth every penny.
