The Steak and Ale Pie was the worst example of a steak pie I have ever had. It was more like a version of a crusted vol au vent with a couple of chewy bits of meat. There must have been a change of chef. Even my wife’s tuna was cold when delivered to the table. However they did change it was fine.

My daughter requested a quiet table for my birthday meal because my granddaughter is autistic, they gave us one on a pathway from the garden to the ladies and as there was a wedding in the garden there was a constant stream of people. We waited 40 minutes for our food. The green vegetables consisted of green beans hard and uncooked, kale chewy and sugar snap peas okay, all luke warm. The fish pie was very nice as were the burgers and the fish. The waitress was very nice, efficient and helpful. I enjoyed my visit because of the company with me but it could have been a lot better!!!

Lovely place with a great beer garden and an outside bar. Service was friendly and efficient. Food not as good as the setting. We had two sandwiches, a steak and a prawn. The white bread with the prawn sandwich was stale and the prawns, though plentiful, were a bit bland. The steak was dry and seemed to have been reheated. It was as if it was left over from the previous day's (Sunday) carvery. Chips were nice but a small portion for £3.

I’ve seen a few negative reviews here which quite frankly supplies me after our experience yesterday. The service was friendly and though we only had the steak sandwich it was absolute delicious and great value for money. I’ve never eaten a steak sandwich quite as nice as this one and it was great value for money. I also saw a couple of dishes going out along which was the halibut which was on the specials menu and I must admit it looked fantastic, but we were saving ourselves for later. The ales and ambience of this place were really welcoming. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend

Very disappointed with my meal having heard great reviews about this place. I had the seafood gratin (which I thought would have prawns, fish and maybe mussels) was just salmon with the tiniest bit of cod with the wine and cheese it was a bit sickly. Then I had the burger which was of very poor quality wasn’t sure if it was ham rather than beef! It was overcooked and chewy. The best bit of my meal was the fries. I won’t be going back.

1/7/24 called in for a lunchtime drink. Very disappointed by the staff. Bar man with ponytail seemed agitated, stomped over to the table and swiped the menu off the table, stomped off throwing the menu down on the bar. The serving lady with glasses and the bar person need some customer service skills as they both came across as rude! Ordinarily the staff are lovely in the Malthouse but definitely not today! Very disappointed and wouldn’t recommend!

After being recommended by our niece, today we have been for Sunday Lunch with friends. Three of us had Roast Beef and one had Vegetarian Wellington, the Beef was quite tough and the Wellington seemed to be an excess amount of Beetroot. Roast Beef on the menu was priced at £20, Wellington £15. We then had Strawberry Eton mess Cheesecake with Meringue, it had never seen any Meringue and there was 1/2 a Fresh Strawberry and three defrosted frozen strawberries, there were three rosettes of whipped cream but the cheesecake was very dry! When the bill came, ALL the main courses had been charged at £24 each!! On querying the bill with the waitress, she took it away and then told us the manager was checking it. The new bill was given to us and we had been overcharged £21. There was no apology for the bill being wrong it was just placed on the table. Will we be back, I don't think so and I would advise anybody who does go, CHECK YOUR BILL!!

A Father's Day visit, with a nice Sunday lunch our aim. Arrived early, so had to wait as the restaurant was busy, seated five minute before we were due; so far, so good. We both chose to go with the Father's Day Special Menu. Prawns in Tempura batter for me, classic prawn cocktail for my companion; oh, did I mention that we had to wait around twenty minutes for our starters arrived. The tempura batter oozed a little oil, something I hadn't experienced when ordered at other venues, they were tasty nevertheless. Prawn cocktail was nice too; so far, so good. We both opted for the roast, with veg and Yorkshire pudding; when in Yorkshire, eat like Yorkshire folk. Roast turkey for my companion, three meats for me. The presentation was drab, the sliced meat hiding the roast potatoes, mashed potatoes and carrots; only the green beans could be seen. The Yorkshire pudding was over cooked, the green beans were meant to be 'Al Dente', some would argue, me included, they were under cooked, far too crunchy. One of the two roast potatoes was hard, likely because the potatoes had not been par boiled sufficiently. They weren't very nice. The meats (beef, turkey and ham) looked and tasted like they had come from the sliced meats counter of the local Deli. Terrible! I can cook a far better roast beef Sunday lunch, and I've never been to catering college. And now to desert. My first choice wasn't available - sold out; the alternative, sticky toffee pudding, was terrible and cold. The 'Eton Mess' cheesecake was unusual, but my companion enjoyed it. This place was so bad that my heart tells me to give the Malthouse another try, but my head tells me this place is trying to fool all of the people, all of the time. Give it a wide berth and save yourself time and money.

Scampi & chips were lovely but the meat pie was not good. Chewy steak and vegetables that were difficult to cut and chewy. Service was very mixed. The young man who was the main server was ok but a young lady asked us if we wanted more drinks and we gave her an order which she then forgot and never arrived. After the main course she asked if we wanted desert. We said yes and she said she would get menus but she just stood at the bar talking to someone behind the bar and never brought menus over. We were never asked for a desert order. This cost the business 3 x desert profit (£20???). Will we go back? No.

Sunday lunch. We were all really looking forward to the Sunday lunch especially having read previous reviews. Unfortunately, it was only average quality though. The meat was fatty and the mash potato was exceptionally salty! So salty it made our mouths tingle! It would have been great if we were given extra gravy too because the Yorkshire puddings were huge yet too dry, almost cardboard like. The desert puddings were good and of generous proportion-so not everything was average. The staff were slow at attending to us (maybe short staffed) and one kept leaning right over to serve rather than coming round the back. We had to ask to order drinks and we thought they’d forgotten the coffee which did come eventually. Overall it was slightly disappointing because we were expecting so much better. Would we return-sadly not sure we would.

As a person who ordered the ciabatta that is described to come with onion rings, peppercorn sauce and chips It arrived on a ciabatta bun, but no onion rings and no peppercorn sauce.. it had horseradish on which surprised both of us. As we were hungry we just ate it. I thought the server would have said something about the change in description.

This was our first ever visit and whilst it was very busy being tapas night we were made to feel unwelcome from entering the place. There were two people in obvious supervisory roles who never smiled and treat us with complete indifference. My wife asked for a tomato juice and was told curtly that they didn't serve tomato juice I had a beer which was very good and served cold. Our food order was very simple I had grilled chicken and my wife ordered a greek salad. Whilst my chicken was nicely cooked and presented the greek salad was simply a bowl of lettuce with a very few shards of feta cheese and an olive. Not as I remember as I remember a greek salad. The service was slow it took about 50 minutes from placing our order to actually being served. At no time did anyone ask if things were OK. Whilst the surroundings were pleasant the furniture was simply hard chairs which did little to improve the long wait for the food. I think because we were not having the tapas we were made to feel uncomfortable. Perhaps the two supervisors were having a difficult time as it was obviously very busy but first impressions count and a smile and warm welcome would have been appreciated. This place is not somewhere I would recommend and on this experience would be unlikely to return

We stayed at the Malt house on a Sunday evening bed, breakfast, evening meal offer through booking.com. Upon arriving the place had a cosy welcoming feel, the manager pleasant and showed us directions to our room. Initially room number 4 looked lovely, nicely decorated etc Upon closer inspection I noticed how dusty the furniture was, this led me to think our room hadn't been cleaned. I checked out the bathroom to find a dirty unflushed toilet, dead wasps in 2 windowsills, dried toothpaste in the sink, water marks and hair on the shower screen and a dirty mirror. I complained and a member of staff came to clean. Our duvet cover was on inside out,I really hope this was just an error and not just what they do to save on washing after prev guest !!! Given what we found in the bathroom I don't hold much hope. We went down for dinner,I asked what was Inc in the deal to be told 2 courses. We decided to have main and dessert. We were charged for the desserts!! The Sunday lunch was lovely, spoilt by only being Luke warm on cold plates. Breakfast wasn't great, anaemic toast and dried overcooked sausages, cold poached eggs. I wouldn't recommend here at all, which is a shame.

The food here is amazing. Due to a series of events we found ourselves here for Sunday lunch last week, and then today for breakfast. The food is wonderful. Harder to express is the sincerity and warmth of the welcome, which is first class. James, the manager, greeted us on our first visit with warmth and wit, and a side order of excellent service. Our return visit last night was at no notice, at a personally devastating time. We needed to stay locally, and with no hesitation he offered to leave us a key out if we hadn't arrived by the time he locked up. He wanted no card details, didn't hesitate to help, and was perfectly thoughtful and caring. Now the rooms here are in need of a bit of tic, and I don't doubt they will get it in time....but stay here, eat here, drink and relax. We will make it a regular haunt as we drive to visit our family locally. On the day my dad left this earth, I will never forget and will be forever grateful for the kindness of James, the lady who brought us tea at breakfast, and the talented chef who took our order. I didn't think I could eat, but what a glorious breakfast. Thank you, James & the Malt house team x we will be back.

Only criticism I can give was they could do with an extra staff member....the 2 young girls were serving the bar and taking food orders so placing orders was a bit slow but the food wasn't slow once order was placed and well worth the waiting for.

Two juices that were topped up as soon as they emptied and then an English breakfast that consisted of everything you could ask for and most of them were in twos. Pleasant surroundings and friendly welcome. The menu offered a 2 course “brunch”. The first course options were substantial enough to be brunch in themselves without the need for a second course. Would you really select scrambled eggs and smoked salmon and follow with a full English breakfast? The steak and ale pie should have been labelled as button mushroom pie with pastry that could double as heavy duty flooring. Not my first visit but will probably be my last.

We stumbled upon this gem having been diverted via Ripponden travelling from Manchester airport to Harrogate - total nightmare. However, this was the silver lining! We arrived at about 5pm and were greeted cheerfully and asked if we were dining, at this point we were not sure as our youngest is gluten intolerant. We checked out the three menus and had no option but to eat! The main menu had lots of choice and variety ranging from standard fish and chips to duck breast. The set menu, although smaller looked equally delicious but it was the specials that won us over. Gnocchi with pepper corn sauce, nachos with pulled pork, 3burger slider! All was delicious and plentiful. Wine was very well priced and the gin menu - which we didn't try - was extensive. If we are in the area again we would definitely return.

Just been for Sunday lunch with the family on 2 courses for £17 menu. Starters were all delicious no complaints. The roast beef dinner was tasty served with on hot plates but the veg wasn't warm, nice piece of beef but again tepid very much what we would expect from a cheaper priced carvery. They do ask if you want your beef pink or well done and the pink beef was lovely and juicy but the well done beef was dry and crispy like it had been grilled to cook it more. The salmon and prawn risotto was tasty and hot, though the salmon was over cooked. Two of our party chose the steak sandwich which both said was too dry and would have preferred a steak in gravy sandwich. The waitresses were very attentive and pleasant, readily offering more drinks and checking all was okay but service was slow, so do be prepared to wait. In general thought it was expensive for what you got. Would we go again? Yes but we'd tell them to make sure the food was hot?

With an overnight stay at the Malt House my wife and I decided to make the most of the Malt House restaurant. Apparently under new management for the last 12 months, Philip and his staff give a very warm welcome and serve delicious food. We went for starters and mains from the set menu which was definitely a good choice. The food was tasty and fresh with nicely sized portions. Will definitely make a point of coming back here.

We called on the way home from a weekend away without booking. We had the fixed price meal and everything was very nice and they were able to cater for a vegan member of our party. I had lamb which melted in your mouth and a crumble for sweet this was also very nice.

Nice starter, slightly over elaborate. I like crab to taste like crab not over infused. Main course delicious, well presented. Dessert lovely. Good service. Worth another visit.

We went here today on the spur of the moment and it was lovely! We went at lunchtime and initial thoughts were that it was a small menu, however, we had no problems choosing something we both liked and the food was faultless. Really impressed! Service was good too and even better was it wasn't too pricey. Our compliments to the chef! We'll be back!

First visit here for many years. We had not booked but staff were very helpful and we got a table after 10 mind. The roast beef Sunday lunch was the best I have ever had , the beef just melted in your mouth, beautiful fresh vegetables. I could not fault any off it. Would highly recommend this restaurant and will be back again !!!

First visit since the pub reopened. Went as a party of 7 including grandchildren , pleased the early diner menu is available on a Saturday , worth paying the extra for the steak , which was lovely . Everyone enjoyed their choices and the service was good. Only criticism was there was a private party in the function room & it was very noisy with young children running up & down the stairs in the room we were eating, this made conversing difficult so suggest the management consider how such disruptions can be minimised.

Called in on the off chance on a Sunday afternoon and they kindly found a table for us. We had a delicious 2-course Sunday Lunch for £17 which could not be faulted. Generous portions perfectly cooked and beautifully presented, delightful and knowledgeable staff, reasonable wine prices. Overall an excellent experience.... we will definitely be back next time with friends. Well recommended.

I visited here not long ago with my friends, the food is amazing! Yes it's more on the top end of the budget, but then again you get what you pay for. And it's so worth it! The food is definitely good quality and the presentation is amazing, and amazing fine dining!

We turned up on the off chance of a free table, after my wife had visited previously, and really enjoyed it. There wasn't a table free, but the very helpful staff had a look around, and found a table that would be ready in 20-30mins, which was fine. We waited in the bar area in front of a lovely real fire, which perhaps spoiled us a little, as once we were seated, the room was freezing. There was a real icy breeze coming through, and had the place not been full, we would've definitely asked to move. The 40min wait for food felt longer because it was so cold!! We only had burgers, which as soon as I saw someone else having their roast dinner delivered, I knew we'd made the wrong choice! The roast looked great. The burger however, was only okay. The rarebit cheese topping was almost non-existent (but they knocked that off the bill, so fair play), the fries I had were slightly underdone, and the chunky chips my wife had were slightly too greasy, and neither of us really understood the spicy sauce that accompanied the burgers, it seemed more suited to a Chinese dish? I'd like to go again, to try something else, as reviews lately seem to suggest the food is better than we experienced, but I'd make sure I booked and the table wasn't at the bottom of the cold stairs!!!

I have just returned from an excellent meal. From first phoning up to book to leaving my partner and I were treated exceptionally well from the attentive staff. The selection of beers was excellent as was the menu. The decor is decent and a wood burning stove adds to the ambience. Both of us were exceptionally pleased with our food. Having indulged over the festive period we both chose salads; I had a large tuna steak (cooked to perfection) with mine and my partner had falafel. We finished with ice cream and white chocolate mouse. This is a very nice establishment and I would thoroughly recommend it.

Visited here a while ago and feel it's upped it's game since. We visited nye for late lunch, I ordered the steak sandwich and my partner the pork belly. The steak was if good quality and came with a side of soup which was perfect as a winter warmer. Where the food really stood out for both of us was with the pork belly. All element of the dish tasted fantastic, which included the gravy, black pudding and amazing potatoes. They look to have some great offers on mid week so I'm sure we will be back one evening to try out some other dishes!

Went to The Malthouse for steak night with my family. The decor was lovely, not much change from the previous decor but some slight changes. The food was all very fancy but as we went for steak night, we all got steaks and a bottle of house wine between 2. The steaks were absolutely gorgeous! I have not had a better steak since! It was cooked to perfection. We all had a desert and they were gorgeous too! Would highly recommend going to the Malthouse! 10 out of 10.

My partner and I stayed at The Malt House as a before Christmas treat as a get away for the night. The place looked beautiful even from the outside with the big well lit Christmas tree! Phil the owner was very welcoming and helpful nothing was too much trouble. The decor is modern but still with a rustic feel. The restaurant is warm and welcoming and the real wood burner opposite the bar is just perfect! Our room was beautifully decorated and warm with a modern feel. The bed was huge and so difficult to get out of in the morning! The evening food was beautifully cooked and fresh my partner really enjoyed his Fish and Chips! Breakfast again just perfect! We will be back very soon!

We were there for lunch so didn't want a large meal so chose from the sandwich section of the very well thought out and comprehensive menu. We chose a steak sandwich and I had a posh fish finger sandwich, these were accompanied by a substantial salad of dressed rocket and baby spinach, fries and coleslaw. The new owners have obviously put a lot of time and effort into revitalising this lovely pub/hotel and it shows. TA readers please ignore older reviews, its a shame they cant be removed as they don't reflect the present reincarnation of "The Malt House".

We dropped in for lunch and we're both very impressed. We both had the beef Wellington which tasted great and was a very decent sized portion. My scallops starter with black pudding was also great. This is the second time we've been over the last few months and the food has been great both times and really reasonably priced too

My husband and two daughters visited this restaurant in July and thoroughly enjoyed it so my husband and I decided to return last Friday. After being shown to our table, we were given the menus and a couple of minutes later the waitress returned and asked us if we would like to order any drinks. This done, we took our time in checking out the menu. When the waitress returned with the drinks she asked if we needed more time so we didn't feel pressurised at all.A few minutes later we ordered and after a suitable amount of time our starters arrived. I had the deep fried Brie and I'm very glad that I did. It was perfectly cooked being runny throughout and tasted great. My husband had the scallops and black pudding which was presented beautifully and according to him was 'just perfect'. Jessie (our attentive and very professional waitress) was on hand to clear the plates. A few minutes later our main courses arrived. My husband had the pork belly (served with dauphinoise potatoes) which looked excellent and he assured me tasted 'unbelievably good'. I had the chicken stuffed with feta which was served with dauphinoise potatoes and a side order of seasonal vegetables. Everything was cooked to perfection and was very flavoursome. The portion sizes were good and unfortunately that meant we were too full for dessert as I would imagine they would have been as good as everything we had that evening. Thanks to the chef, Jessie and the rest of the staff for a lovely evening. We will be returning.

Went on a very quiet Monday lunchtime and enjoyed one of the best meals I have ever had. Beautifully cooked scallops in an amazing broth to start and feather blade "pie" which was slow cooked beef, shredded and moulded into a tower topped with a tiny shortcrust mushroom pie. Just delightful. Add to this very pleasant staff and excellent beer( Timothy Taylor's Landlord, probably the best bitter in the world) and you have a place that you really look forward to returning to. Delightful.

There was some foreign object in the vinegar which I will not describe – I am a vinegar lover especially with fish and chips and I will never touch vinegar again – I should really report to health and safety! After pointing the disgusting object out there was no apology and they brought more vinegar!Ordered Bread, olives and oil as starter Bread was raw you could see uncooked dough throughout the olives came swimming in thick olive oil which had been frozen and still had ice in Ordered fish, chips & mushy peas, mushy peas looked like green gravy, chips thrown on top, worst still the fish inside the hot crispy batter was raw for two of us who ordered the same.Complained and was told, the chef said he used a probe, has to by law and as far as the chef been concerned the fish was within the law!

After going here for over 25 years never again. Poor customer service, prioritise the online orders and ignore face to face customers. 4 staff in the shop and was ignored by all bar 1. The service has been steadily going down hill and tonight was the last straw. Such a shame as I like to support small local businesses who need the support.

Stayed at the nearby hotel for work so went to The Old Mill out of convenience and was pleasantly surprised. Food was lovely, had the beef burger, the Malbec was very nice and the staff were friendly and attentive. Definitely recommend and is a bonus to have such a lovely pub so close to a premier inn

Visited today for tea and cake. Very disappointed, paid£16+ for two teas and two pieces of supposedly sticky ginger cake. Cake was awful very dry and hard. Shame as the garden centre itself was very nice.

Arrived at 12:45. Told no soup left so the soup is obviously not made daily. I’m sure nobody is eating soup for breakfast so working on the assumption that lunch starts around 12, they’re either not making enough or they’re using leftovers. Ridiculously slow service. Waited 45 minutes for 2 overpriced sandwiches. Slice of cake £3.75, wafer thin. Staff surly and unwelcoming. Not a good place to eat at all.

What a lovely set out pub! Walked in greeted with big smiles from a guy with black hair flicked over to the side (think he had a tea towel on his shoulder). Then when we was in and sat down we ordered through the app our drinks were delivered quick by the assistant manager Kayleigh which through out our visit made us feel welcome. I ordered the hunters chicken and my partner ordered mega mixed grill, food came piping hot and tasted amazing hats off to the chefs. When we was leaving the manager tom was stood near the end of the bar, what a lovely gent he is! Overall cant wait ti return for some more lovely food!
