went here for something to eat at around 2.30 on a thursday afternoon, we were served by Jasmine from behind the bar who was really nice and friendly and looked after us brilliantly. The food cooked by Jim in the kitchen was very tasty, I had chilli, with lovely chips, rice, sour cream and nachos, my girlfriend had chicken ,mushroom and bacon pie with big chunks of chicken breast and plenty of mushrooms. A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon in a friendly pub , we will definitely be back.

Back staying not too far away from Warton and had to return to The Malt Shovel for lunch. Plenty of parking and a very friendly welcome as soon as you walk through the door. A very good menu with plenty of choice to suit all tastes. We had curry of the day (chicken madras) - excellent with a good 'kick' and a 2 Malt Shovel burgers - very good. My only criticism (a personal taste) is that there is a lot of rock salt added to the chips. Portion sizes were large (unfortunately no room for the tasty sounding desserts). Would highly recommend this pub for excellent, friendly staff, great food and good beer.

Food absolutely amazing, 10 Stars!! I had the pie of the day (Steak and Plum Port Ale) with mash and it was the most delicious homemade pie I’ve ever had (I’m told Jim was in the kitchen, so thank you Jim.) My husband had the burger and chips and it was, again, homemade and huge. Great quality! Laura behind the bar was super friendly and very accommodating. As visitors from across the Pennines we did get a very local vibe when we walked in, but so glad we stayed. Lovely local atmosphere. Busy when we arrived, but didn’t wait too long for a table.

On a family weekend with our 8m motorhome and picked this pub up on Brit Stops, communicated with them via email to book a 4 night stay with electric hook up several weeks before our trip. Brit Stops ask that people who stay at one of the pub stopovers to give them some business- so we did, spent over £200 on drinks and meals and so happy to as the staff are wonderfully polite and accommodating and the food is excellent, lovely little quiet village with the pub being an active part of it. Was looking for somewhere to eat and after reading the reviews we chose this place. The building looks a bit tired as does the inside but that does not reflect on the food which was absolutely out of this world. I had fish and chips fish was perfect and the chips were “like mum used to make”. Our peg had the curry special which was chickpea and spinach. I really didn’t fancy that but I tasted it and it was fantastic, luckily there was plenty of it so I finished it off for her. Kids had chicken nuggets which were home made. The prices were on the cheap side of what I would expect to pay for this quality of food. All the staff were very friendly and by the time we left the place was packed out with all the locals having a pint after work. If we are ever in the area again I will definitely be visiting again.

What a great stay at this terrific South Lakes hotel and bar. Perfect location to explore the area and convenient links to get further. Run by a professional and caring family that creates a homely and local pub environment. Food, beer and comfortable rooms are the right combination after a day in the hills. Loved it!

I've eaten at The Herbarium lots of times now and every meal I've had has been delicious. I love their matcha tea too. I'm not fully vegan, but try to eat a plant-based diet 4-5 days a week, and you certainly don't feel you're sacrificing anything in terms of taste, variety or quality at The Herb. A calming atmosphere and lovely staff too. Well done to the whole team (including the Chefs who probably don't get a shout out often enough) 👏

Great pub, with history. Lovely staff, great pub grub (battered halloumi and chips), and beautifully kept beer. What's not to like! 😁👍

Quiet little pseudos corner: sandals , notebooks, scribbling, armpit hair, yesterdays Guardian, roll ups. Top place really. Croissant served without butter (a sin in my book), coffee cup really well worn in. Nobody smoking Gauloises outside. Now that would have been great.
