Visited recently with friends for Sunday lunch. The food was excellent as was the service. Plenty of staff. The only downside is the price of drinks. Very expensive. Cannot fault the food or service. Well worth a visit.

The wonderful aspect of Gisborough Hall Hotel is the range of options you have. Formal dining, a more relaxed option or in the splendour of the Great Hall with its Minstrel gallery a marvellous setting for a coffee and cake or an afternoon tea or lunch or just to have a relaxing drink. Table service is the routine but it is not routine. It is comfortable, uncrushed. You come here to relax not to grab at anything. Excellent staff will take your order, answer questions on the menu and check you have what you need. I loved this place. And of course, it a s simple step outside to the one terrace with the views of the tennis court and the hills that form the northern end of the North York Moors. I am ready for an aperitif there again now!

Attended Gisborough hall for afternoon tea recently. What a very poor experience. We were looking forward to this with other family members. The sandwiches were very poor and should have sent them back but really didn’t want to create a fuss as this was a gift . One sandwich contained two dry slices of tomato with a couple of salad leaves. Another had cucumber and not sure if it was meant to be on cream cheese. Pretty tasteless. I can’t actually remember what was in other sandwiches as so insignificant. The bread was also dry around the edges. The scones were ok but don’t really see the need for a cheese and a fruit scone. On one of the plates there was half a small scotch egg and half a small pork pie. One wonders what they do with the other half if there’s no request from other paying guests for the same choice of options available - maybe a staff treat ! There were two scones which neither of the guests wanted two of. Think they could have provided one scone and a full scotch egg and full pork pie. I can’t imagine this breaking their bank. The changes that we asked for were met with a frosty response. If paying customers requests are such a chore then I think they should look for different employment. Overall I would deter anyone I know from going there. We’ve had afternoon tea in other venues which left this one standing. Think the only positive I can think of, was the view out of the window.

Had our pre-dinner drinks here whilst we chose our meal from the menu and awaited call for restaurant. A nice quiet relaxing area and temperature just right with real log fire too.

My wife and I were bought an afternoon tea as a present. When we visited there was no staff visible so we went to reception where we were told to wait in the lounge and a member of staff would be there shortly. So a few minutes later a member of staff approached but promptly ignored me as did the next, I went to the bar for assistance and a waitress said our table was set up for us in another room, before we reached the table it turned out our table had been given to some one else, another table was set up and our order was taken. The food arrived and was mostly ok, the sausage roll tasted odd, couldn't taste the horseradish in the horseradish sauce, there was a piece of broken plastic under one of the cakes. If I'd been paying myself I would have walked out, at no time did I feel welcome, there was a shortage of staff and customer service didn't exist. I won't be going back, if afternoon tea was this badly managed I will not be trying the restaurant.

If you judge food by the large amount on your plate - this is not the place for you. If you appreciate quality you will enjoy this superb hotel. Rooms up to the normal McDonald's standard, hotel impressive and staff very helpful and well trained. Will definitely return.

Our daughter bought us afternoon tea as part of our Christmas gifts and we used the gift voucher today. The staff were very happy to replace the finger sandwich fillings for us as we weren't keen on what was on offer. No problem there. We were served with three finger sandwiches each, an extremely delicious home baked fruit scone with clotted cream and jam - one of the best I have had, a chocolate desert and three cake "fancies" each. Very creamy. Perhaps too much cream for hubby, and we could have replaced this with a "gentleman's afternoon tea", had we thought about it. Oodles of tea. We were offered tea refills four times. Service was superb. Very pleased with it all and would highly recommend.

Six of us booked for Sunday lunch after having such a great time at Christmas. Staff made us feel very welcome and attention to detail was very high, gravalax, hock terrine and melon was enjoyed by all, roast pork, sirloin of beef and roast chicken was cooked to perfection as was the vegetables, roast potatoes were delicious and all was piping hot, desserts very yummy and felt naughty because so indulgent. Many thanks , look forward to a return visit soon.

The best food and service we have been fortunate to have experienced. My wife and I are both allergic to garlic. The staff, including the chefs went to a great deal of trouble to ensure that the alternatives were as attractive, in some cases at least as far as we were concerned, better then those with garlic in them. Great food, great staff, great occasion.

We held my daughters wedding reception in the Main Hall at Gisborough Hall.A spectacular setting with the happy couple making an entrance down the double staircase to a standing ovation. The 3 course meal could not be faulted, with excellent service.A little disappointed that special dietary requirements , pre ordered, were not delivered without reminders, but this was rectified quickly.A hot buffet was provided for the evening reception, and again praise was given almost universally for the quality.

It was almost 3 years to the day when I decided to give the 'Bistro' in this place a go again. The meal 3 years ago was apalling with my fish being the frozen packet variety, you know the one, perfectly oblong, flat, awful batter which is slimy on the inside, and the machine marks which leaves a seam underneath this confection.Against my better judgement my companion and I went for lunch on Friday 1st March 2013. The restaurant was deserted; I was soon to find out why.My companion ordered Beef Bourguignon with Tagliatelli. I ordered Cajun chicken in a ciabatta bun with salad and peppered potato wedges. The tagliatelli was cooked to perdition and resembled leather, whilst the beef was ill flavoured, almost tasteless and 'floury', presumably from gravy thickening. My own meal was even worse. The wedges were clearly frozen and from a packet. The ciabatta was akin to a cobblestone in its hardness. The chicken was truly awful. A flattened chicken breast that had never seen any 'Cajun' spices. It was dry, stringy, and tasteless.Underneath the chicken on the ciabatta I found lettuce which was rotten. I mean ROTTEN, it was clearly as old as the hills as it was the heart and had yellowed, apart from the pieces that had gone rotten, turned black and slimy. At this point I ceased eating and asked for the manager.I have never heard such a litany od excuses. He first denied that my experience from 3 years previously could not have involved packet battered fish as he was the manager at this time and he knew that they did not serve frozen packet fish.He was in denial and I would dearly have loved to ask him where they sourced this 'Fresh' fish which was formed in a perfect rectangle, with flat uniform batter which had a production seam underneath. It was clear from his attitude there would be no mileage in attempting to change his denial mode.I took him to task for my wedges but he was once again in denial, reluctantly admitting "They may have been frozen". I invited him to try the flesh masquerading as chicken, he declined. He could say little about the rotten lettuce as it black slimyness was staring him in the face. His attitude was confrontational, surly, unrepentant and unremorseful. In spite of the fact that my partner had already left and I was also leaving prematurely due to the disgraceful food, this resulting in our not consuming the wine ordered, he made oa point of telling the barman to charge us for the wine: £10-40 for 2 medium glasses of mediocre rose.An altogether dreadful experience which was not enhanced by the attitude of the manager who clearly believes this is some sort of fabulous dining experience, it is most certainly not.I shall not be waiting 3 years before returning, as I shall not be returning.

Recently had Afternoon Tea here to celebrate wedding anniversary. I had booked in advance but we were not given much of a welcome and service was very poor for an hotel of this supposed quality. We chose to sit out on the terrace (a lovely place to sit with views of the hills). Eventually a girl came and asked would we like our glasses of champagne before tea. Having said "yes please" we waited an age and then the sandwiches, cakes, scones and cream arrived and were left on the table in the sun. After another long wait I took the cakes etc in to ask for them to be kept in the cool and to ask for our champagne. The waiter said "oh, she has gone to look for it" ! I returned to the table outside and we placed a napkin(paper, not linen) over the sandwiches as they were starting to "toast". A few more minutes went by and then the champagne arrived along with the cakes etc............ again I asked them to keep them indoors in the cool!Sandwiches were very poor and could best be described as "penny pinching". Extremely thin ham, a scraping of cream cheese with half slices of cucumber and butter brushed on and thick cheap bread; nothing dainty about them.Scones were delicious and the cream and jam generous.Cakes/pastries were dainty and quite nice and the little pot of raspberry mousse was nice to finish with.Pot of tea.....a small pot with ONE tea bag in! I asked for another tea bag which was brought along with fresh hot water.Overall this was a disappointing experience and I would not recommend it as there are other places in the area that do a better tea, with better service at a lower cost. This was £17.50 each (champagne is not included in that price)I have eaten lunch here before and have had good service and good food but I got the distinct feeling that they are not used to serving Afternoon Teas and feel that the staff serving that day needed better training.(August 2nd)
